MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Chair of the Board for a world-class organization that does so much to help Calgarians become better than yesterday . From kids on skis for the first time to those aspiring to be on the podium at the next Olympics, WinSport has been there to serve the community . As I pass the baton as Chair to longtime Board member Scott Hutcheson, I’m proud to have been part of the many accomplishments and successes that have taken place at every level in the organization .

During my tenure, WinSport continued to evolve and strengthen its position as one of the premier sport organizations in the world . WinSport is a world-leading organization where people of all ages come to learn sport, improve in sport and excel to their fullest potential . It was only a few years ago that WinSport began building a team that would help it achieve its goals and propel the organization to something all others aspire to . This was done while ensuring all decisions are made on a sustainable business model .

Under President & CEO Barry Heck’s direction, the organization has made tremendous headway in continuing to build on its recent key initiatives . These include safety and security for all WinSport guests, team members, athletes, volunteers and tenants; increased communication and collaboration; brand development and recognition in the community; and leveraging the opportunity to provide outstanding guest experiences .

As WinSport continues to promote healthy and active families and to help athletes win medals, I would like to thank the Board for their time, commitment and continued contribution to the organization . The Board has done an exceptional job of making connections with the community and identifying business opportunities, which is integral to the overall success of the organization .

I am proud to have been part of a team that has made great strides in the last year and am confident WinSport will continue to reach its goals and achieve success .

MESSAGE FROM THE INCOMING BOARD CHAIR

It has been my great pleasure to serve the WinSport organization as a Board member for more than a decade . It is an organization that plays an important role in our community by supporting high-performance sport and giving others the opportunity to lead a healthy lifestyle through our goal of inspiring human potential . As of February 2017, I am honoured to begin my term at WinSport as the Board Chair, where I will be even more engaged in my service to the WinSport community, the management team and our valued guests in the exciting times ahead .

Collectively, the organization has focused on maximizing our financial resources, human capital, physical plant and our technical experience to lead in winter sports . I am proud to say that every year in the past decade, I have witnessed positive steps towards reaching these goals . With President & CEO Barry Heck’s experienced team, I am confident we will see progress in the coming years as the Board continues to help management develop the right strategy to best position the organization for continued success .

I’m enthusiastic and excited to work with our new Board members who will unquestionably strengthen our current Board . I would like to thank outgoing members Lesley Conway and Chair Bob Hamilton for their hard work, dedication and

passion during their terms . I would also like to recognize our volunteers for their commitment and thank the entire WinSport team for their contributions to the Calgary community . As we move forward, I will contribute as a facilitator for our capable Board and I will support Barry and his team to do their best in meeting the community’s needs . I am enthusiastic and optimistic that WinSport will continue to make positive strides as a leader in our community .

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

The 2015-16 fiscal year provided WinSport with many successes and challenges . We continue to focus on the significant factors and critical actions that are required to operate on a sustainable business model, while being careful to not lose sight of our commitment to high-performance sport . We undertook a diligent strategic planning and review process early in the fiscal year . Our leaders are now using these key strategic priorities as a framework for our annual capital, operational and business unit plans . The creation of a Purpose and revisions to our Vision and Mission have helped articulate our goals for this year and years to come .

PurposeTo inspire and activate human potential through the spirit of sport

VisionTo be a world-leading centre for winter sport excellence and athletic development

Mission To provide opportunities for Canadians to discover, develop and excel at sport through world-class training, facilities and exceptional experiences

WinSport is at an exciting crossroads – a pivotal juncture in what has been an outstanding living Olympic and community legacy to date . We remain focused on our task of ensuring that an enduring Olympic spirit exists in Calgary for generations to come, as well as introducing new opportunities for participation .

Building on our goal of improving guest experiences, we made significant strides in repositioning our brand . We prioritized safety and security for our team members, tenants and guests and improved communication and collaboration . Our programming continued to show its strength . We taught more than 36,000 people to ski and snowboard, while another 6,800 children participated in our summer camps and more than 40,000 students participated in our school program . We also proudly hosted luge and freestyle skiing World Cup events .

Although we achieved many successes, this year was not without its challenges . At the top of the list was the tragic loss of two young members of the Calgary community this past winter during an incident on our campus . This was a very difficult time for our entire team, the community and most of all, the families affected . Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the Caldwell family and the other families involved in the accident .

7

We continued the process of refining and stabilizing our operational model to overcome economic challenges . Coupled with that, we are in the process of renewing some of our capital assets as many are at the end of their life cycle . As we receive no government funding for our operations, we have been undertaking a capital needs assessment . A significant recapitalization of WinSport will be required in order to renew our end-of-life facilities and maintain our new ones to a world-class standard . We have been innovative in evolving our existing facilities to meet the changing needs of sport, while at the same time servicing the needs of the general Calgary community .

We continue to pursue our short-term goals through our strategic plan . We have established a focused and disciplined operations mindset to carefully manage costs and build new capacity . Our long-term strategic plan is to have WinSport recognized as Canada’s top winter sport centre of excellence by 2021, delivering exceptional experiences for our athletes and guests . We will channel our resources in a disciplined manner to focus on our key strategic priorities while never wavering from our strict Standards of Excellence, which are:• To ensure financial sustainability through business optimization• Deliver excellence in winter sports through programs and facilities• Create a high-performance culture that embodies the spirit of sport• Amplify guest experience by delivering our brand promise and creating brand ambassadors

I would like to thank our tremendous Board of Directors for their passion and commitment to WinSport . This year we will be adding Rebecca Morley, Andrew Judson and Greg Kwong to the Board . I welcome them to WinSport and thank them for serving . Longtime Board member Scott Hutcheson will take over as Board Chair . I would also like to sincerely thank the retiring Board members, Bob Hamilton and Lesley Conway, for their hard work and dedication during their tenures . Bob and Lesley have both served as Board Chairs and their passion, commitment and guidance have been instrumental in WinSport’s growth and success .

Our entire team, spanning all departments on campus, is crucial to our successes . Thank you for your hard work and commitment . It’s no secret that there have been significant economic challenges WinSport has faced and will likely continue to face in the next year or so . I have complete confidence that the Board of Directors, incoming Chair, our strong leadership and our passionate WinSport Team will be able to guide this great organization to continued success .

OUR STORYThe dictionary defines perseverance as steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success . Our team at WinSport helps people pick themselves up after they fall or helps build their confidence after they finish in fourth place – all so they learn to persevere . This allows them to gain mastery, improve confidence and establish enduring friendships through sport . It also allows them to simply enjoy the benefits of the changing seasons and amazing geography that surrounds us . We believe in being better than yesterday .

It started for us in the early 1960s . The community gathered on our small hill to strap on planks of wood to learn how to ski and take advantage of the Rocky Mountains in our own backyard .

Even back then, among the falls and tumbles, you could hear the laughter and the distinctive slap of a high five when the young and young at heart got up on their skis for the first time or mastered their parallel turns . The willingness to get up and try again is what defines us as Calgarians .

As the hill started to grow up, a group of leaders passionate about sport got together with the ambition to put our hill on the world stage by bidding to host the Winter Olympic Games . After a few failed attempts, these leaders dusted themselves off and eventually won the bid to welcome the world to our small ski hill in 1988 . These Games were filled with stories of challenge and perseverance, such as Eddie the Eagle soaring to new heights or the fledgling Jamaican bobsleigh team,

who, after flipping their sled in the Kreisel, persevered to the finish line to cap off an amazing run at their first ever Winter Olympic Games .

These stories of pushing to be better, despite not hitting the podium yet achieving so much, galvanized our purpose here at WinSport . We are here to help people activate and reach their potential through the spirit of sport .

Since that time, our organization and our campus have grown . Through continued investment and our push to be better, we are focused on developing the whole person . This does not simply mean mastering sport – it means simultaneously building the mental, physical and social skills of our participants .

Through our experience, there is lot to be learned from trying something new – failing and trying again, or achieving a personal best . We have introduced people to sport across our campus and have provided the guidance and abilities to push them to their personal podiums across the globe .

Many see it as a ski lesson, skate lesson or a week of summer camp . We see it as an opportunity to instil valuable life skills to enable people to have a positive impact on their family, friends and the community as a whole .

At WinSport, we believe we are here to teach others how they can be better than yesterday .

“MY CHILDREN HAVE HAD SO MANY LEADERS AND INSTRUCTORS AT WINSPORT THAT HAVE MADE SUCH AN IMPACT ON THEIR LOVE OF SPORT AND THEIR DESIRE TO TRY NEW THINGS.”-Tracy and Allen

13

DISCOVERCalgary parents Tracy and Allen registered their son and daughter in several of WinSport’s programs over the past couple of years to introduce them to sport, and help them gain lifelong skills. After seeing the positive changes in their two children through summer camps and ski and snowboard lessons, the family felt compelled to tell us the impact the programming and our staff has had on their children.

“Every single camp has been exceptional! My two kids talk about all the exciting things they’ve done throughout the day and how great all of their instructors/leaders have been . My children have had so many leaders and instructors at WinSport that have made such an impact on their love of sport and their desire to try new things .

My daughter, Paige, had amazing bike camp instructors over the past two years who had such an impact on her . Paige’s confidence soared and the instructor was so much fun for the girls in her group .

Zach, my son, took level 1 and 2 preschool snowboard lessons . Now, he can’t get enough of it! He still often talks about Carson, his instructor, and hopes that he gets him this season for level 3 . Carson was an amazing role model for my son . He instilled such a love of the sport and we couldn’t thank him enough! This summer, Zach had a wonderful biking camp leader who was so patient and caring . He built up Zach’s confidence and because of that, my son now has a love for biking .

I just wanted to let you know that we are so happy with your facility, programs and staff . You have a first-class facility and we absolutely enjoy every moment experiencing it . I want to thank your staff and let them know that my children had an amazing time this summer and they can’t wait to come back and take part in many other programs .”

DEVELOPFinn Young, WinSport Academy Freeski Performance Team

Finn started skiing with his family at the age of three. What started out as a way to spend time with his family, began to evolve into something more – a sport where he could challenge himself and develop his persona as much as it did his athletic ability.

“It was after my first few real competitions when I was about nine years old, when I knew I wanted to compete at a high level and train more, compete more and learn more tricks . I love every part of it – just being on the hill, training, working out, learning new tricks and just getting better every day . It’s a subjective sport that is based so much on style . It takes time, but once you find your own personal style, people notice it and when you see that other people like it, and you like it – it’s really gratifying . My coach (Rex Thomas) has been with me in every part of my training and WinSport has been such an important place for me to succeed . We have everything here – I go to the gym, get physiotherapy, and ski – it has everything we need to advance our sport and allow athletes to grow . My goal is to get to the X Games – that’s where the sport started and where it became a passion for me . I want to get there and represent WinSport .”

EXCELMimi Rahneva, national skeleton athlete and WinSport employee

After realizing she was too small to succeed in the sport of bobsleigh, Mimi Rahneva followed through with her passion for speed and tried another ice sport where size doesn’t matter – skeleton. The Bulgaria native fell in love with the precision it takes to manoeuvre the corners of the track. She excelled quickly, and after making the Canadian national team in Ottawa, began training at WinSport in 2014. She now calls WinSport her home – where she works, trains and receives physical therapy. In December 2016, she won a bronze medal in Lake Placid, N.Y., in just her second career World Cup race.

“The facilities are world-class . I’ve been to Germany and Australia and the facilities don’t even compare . WinSport is so comfortable and so accessible . It’s been an awesome experience – I have started working here, training here and getting my physio here . It’s been such a great experience – everyone seems to want to take care of you and understands the struggles that an athlete has . It’s nice when the chefs know you’ve been training really hard and they push an extra plate of food to you or buy you a coffee . Everybody has been so supportive . I work in the catering department where my team is so flexible in letting me switch shifts so I can train effectively but also work to pay the bills . It’s so nice to know that there’s someone backing you up and is in your corner supporting you and cheering you on . WinSport has definitely created a strong base for me – a foundation for me to grow within and to grow outward on my journey to represent our country at the Olympics in Pyeongchang .”

OUR PEOPLEJordan Wagner, Marketing Manager

Fresh out of college and looking to propel his graphic design career, Jordan Wagner landed a job as a junior graphic designer at WinSport in 2006. Ten years later, he’s been through three re-brands, has seen staff come and go and witnessed several of the organization’s newer world-class facilities be built from the ground up, right from his office window. As he describes it, Jordan has grown in so many ways along with the organization.

“When I first started as a junior graphic designer, I learned a lot about the industry from the lead graphic designer . When she left the organization, I was on my own to do everything related to graphic design . I went from being somebody who was just told to complete tasks, to taking full control of the look of the organization, and that experience really built up my abilities and confidence . I initially wanted to work at WinSport because I enjoyed snowboarding and WinSport had a great reputation for their park, so I thought it would be a cool place to work . As new facilities were built, I took an interest in other sports like hockey and circuit training . Having experienced these world-class facilities first hand, I was more inspired than ever to market the growing array of products for the business . So in a way, I’ve really grown professionally and personally along with the organization . It’s great to work for an organization that is passionate about giving back to the community . It’s easy to come to work as a marketer when you believe in the products you’re selling – it feels like I’m part of a movement to promote healthy, active living . It’s also nice to work with like-minded people who want to create positive change and help people become better than yesterday .”

VOLUNTEERSPaul Quan, WinSport Volunteer

Volunteers are valued members of the WinSport team, providing essential support to various departments and activities. Last year, hundreds of volunteers gave their time to WinSport to help promote sport, develop Canadian athletes and to introduce children to active living. Paul Quan first volunteered at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games. Now 80 years old, Paul is just as involved as he’s ever been. He can be seen on campus year-round helping people skate and ski.

“I volunteer just because it feels so natural – somebody on the hill always needs help . There’s always somebody who is just learning and might be stressed out on the hill and I just want to help them . l’ll ski around and help people who have fallen get back up and make sure they’re OK . When I’m on the ice rink, I make sure people have a helmet and are having a good time . I like when they see me and wave or give the thumbs up . It’s a good feeling when people recognize you and you know you have had a positive impact on their life .”

OPERATIONS AND EVENTS

Striving to create memorable experiences for the community, we successfully launched The Plunge in August, an 810-foot (245-metre), three-lane, inflatable water slide . It will be a key component of next summer’s attractions, in addition to summer bobsleigh, zipline and Skyline Luge . This past year was also important in developing plans and building Western Canada’s largest tube park which will not only provide revenue generation, but will continue to help introduce people to snow .

In her first full year at WinSport, Executive Chef Liana Robberecht successfully enhanced our food and beverage offerings which is now a key component of the events we host throughout the year . The Food and Beverage team has also expanded operations by developing a catering program, which brings our extraordinary food offerings to offsite locations . WinSport continues to be a prime venue for conferences, weddings and other events, big or small .

In addition to the thousands of hours the arenas at the Markin MacPhail Centre are used for hockey, figure skating, ringette and sledge hockey, the International Arena underwent modifications to host other major events . The year saw the complex host several mixed martial arts events, the Canadian badminton championships, concerts and other events .

Lastly, we saw increased visits to the WinSport Medicine Clinic from not only athletes of all levels and abilities, but the general public as well . Led by Dr . Brian Benson, the clinic is also a leading edge facility for concussion testing and rehabilitation . In addition to the public membership options at The Performance Training Centre, more team training offerings were also introduced this year .

WinSport’s successful programming is a key component to our business and would not be possible without the revenue support we receive from events, food & beverage, operations and the general public through visits to our campus . We continued to be a premier destination for skiing and snowboarding through hosting more than 169,000 ski and snowboard visits this past season .

WINSPORT IN THE COMMUNITY

Legacy Gala

The third WinSport Legacy Gala brought out more than a dozen of Calgary’s top chefs along with hundreds of Calgarians for a night of spectacular cuisine and entertainment in a 1930s circus themed atmosphere . All of the net proceeds from the WinSport Legacy Gala were invested directly into athletes and athlete development — in programs, coaching, equipment and/or bursaries — to help athletes reach their potential . The three Legacy Galas have raised in excess of $250,000 .

Christmas at the Track

Hundreds of Calgary families partook in holiday-themed activities at Christmas at the Track, which took place during the Viessmann Luge World Cup . This event provided interactive fun for the entire family, while also allowing them to watch the exciting sport of luge .

Fort McMurray Fundraiser

As a member of the Calgary community, we were proud to rally together and support our fellow Albertans by putting on a barbecue where all proceeds went directly to the Canadian Red Cross to help those affected by the wild fires in Fort McMurray . The event raised more than $5,000 .

New Canadians on snow

As part of our mission to help people discover sport, we teamed up with our partner Rossignol to put a family who just moved to Calgary from Nigeria, on snow . We gave them a group lesson, while Rossignol generously provided all the equipment the family needed . Our other partner, Ski Cellar Snowboard, provided the location for our video shoot so we could capture the moment .
