We are delighted to thank everyone who made a gift to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation this past year. Throughout the past fiscal year we received over $3.4 million from community donors. With your generous donations we were able to purchase specific equipment, like a $1.2M Fluoroscope Unit, that will assist patients for years to come.

It has been a busy year, filled with phenomenal gift announcements, events and new partnerships. We have enjoyed promising news about our hospital regarding the approval for MRI installation and the expansion of our Mental Health services.

With a new strategic plan in place, our actions over the past twelve months have been focused on a singular purpose – to ensure the residents of our community have the best healthcare available. The leadership provided by Hospital President and CEO, Patrick Gaskin, and his team has helped restore the community’s confidence in the management of healthcare at CMH. The transparency and engagement between the Hospital and Foundation has been a leading factor in our combined success. We have included the Hospital’s Report to the Community as an insert in this publication.

This year we participated in a record number of donor visits, Hospital tours, and donor engagement activities, in order to tell our story and build momentum for our fundraising programs. We also received our largest legacy bequest ever of $1.7 million from the Deir family.

We are excited about seeing MRI become a reality for Cambridge residents this coming spring. As you consider where you will give your gifts or volunteer your time in the year ahead, we encourage you to consider the hospital once again. Your investments will contribute to the success of our MRI Campaign and continue to provide the best patient care possible .

With sincere thanks,

Mike Ritchie Foundation Chair

Tim savours every moment of the sunlit morning, and is careful not to take this small luxury for granted. He is aware that without state-of-the-art medical equipment and a great team of physicians, he would have much pain, and a difficult time walking. Leading Apollo through the park’s trails would be nearly impossible. Playing catch with his golden buddy, the motion of bending down to pick up a good throwing stick, would be excruciating.

Osteoarthritis, in both hips, is what causes Tim his difficulties. But thanks to an injection treatment that helps to replace the fluid in his hip joints, Tim is able to continue enjoying his walks.

This past year, over a million dollars in donor funds were used to purchase a new fluoroscope machine for our hospital. This equipment helps physicians administer accurate and less painful injections for patients like Tim. A fluoroscope allows the doctor to see exactly where the needle is positioned in the hip joint, to ensure the injection is most effective. Over three thousand patients annually require a fluoroscope scan to facilitate treatment, or diagnosis a condition.

Cambridge Memorial did offer fluoroscope imaging before this new machine, but older technology meant that each procedure took a long time. The new machine has crystal clear images and the faster procedure means a lower radiation dose. The machine can also be moved into more positions to get the best view without having the patient hold an awkward pose.

The new fluoroscope is part of the hospital’s diagnostic imaging equipment renewal plan. New ultrasound units were also purchased with donor funds, a digital mammography machine is coming this year, and an MRI will be installed next year.

Imaging technology assists doctors in restoring mobility for many patients. Apollo is delighted that Tim is nearly pain-free thanks to his injections, and sincerely thanks everyone who contributed to help purchase the fluoroscope!

Tim Keane loves to start his day by taking his faithful companion, Apollo, for a walk in beautiful Dumfries Park.

DeZURIK Cancer WalkEmployees, suppliers and friends of DeZurik surpassed their fundraising goals for their June Cancer Walk, raising enough money in 2 years to purchase 9 chemotherapy chairs and other essential equipment for Medical Day Care. Why do they do it? “Because they care” about their family and friends who have been touched by cancer.

Steed & EvansFriendly competition is strong at Steed & Evans who challenged various employee crews to raise funds for our Spring Appeal (blankets, pillows & stretchers for ER). Steed & Evans matched the donation and helped us buy enough pillows to “stuff a truck!”

You started at CMH in January, 2011 - what were your impressions? My first impression was that this hospital has a real community feel to it. It is warm, friendly and I felt welcomed. Everyone seems to work together, but more importantly, they want to work together.

CMH is expecting a schedule 1 designation. How will that change the program? Well, we'll double in size to 20 beds and we will have the capacity to take care of patients who are formed.

What does ‘formed’ patient mean? This is a person being admitted to hospital against their will because of a mental health issue, leading to imminent danger to self or others. Currently, these patients wait in our emergency department until transportation is arranged, and they are sent to London or St. Thomas.

How will this help Cambridge and North Dumfries?I think the care provided to formed patients will be safer because they will have their support systems and families nearby. It will also be more efficient for the system. We know our community and we know how to work with our partner agencies. Our program will finally offer a full range of mental health services that a community of this size needs.

So better care, closer to home…Precisely and an added bonus of the schedule 1 designation means that CMH will need to offer more transitional support services for our patients. These are services for people who can be discharged early, but only with community supports in place or patients needing immediate help, but do not need to be admitted to hospital.

What are the current challenges facing our mental health system? Like many other health care services, access to skilled professionals is always a challenge. I see the need for better coordination between all mental health service providers and care standards. A model similar to what Cancer Care Ontario does for cancer care would be of potential benefit.

What about opportunities? The schedule 1 designation opens up many opportunities. We may be able to attract psychiatric residents. Plus, it allows us to fully participate with our partner hospitals and possibly develop a regional niche, much like Guelph General treats eating disorders and Grand River takes on child and adolescent mental health cases, which is my specialty.

What are the recent innovations and treatments in mental health care? The Wellington-Waterloo region has adopted a 'recovery focus' model for people with mental illness. This means, the care team learns about the patient's goals, identifies the patient's strengths, and focuses treatment so that they can achieve their goals using their strengths. This is much more meaningful for the patient and it leads to better care.

Kate Miyasaki, 11, is a competitive speed skater. Last February, when passing a skater at a local meet, she collided with another skater and fell. Her parents hoped it was a minor sprain and took her straight to the ED at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

Kate’s father carried her in to the ED where they were greeted by friendly volunteers and then saw the triage nurse. Kate was given a wheelchair to make her more comfortable.

She was taken for x-rays and when they finished, her family was told to wait for her name to be called to see the doctor. As they walked to sit

down, they heard Kate’s name called and were immediately brought into an exam room to see the doctor.

Kate went for a crutch fitting and her parents were informed that the fracture clinic would be calling to book a follow-up appointment. “We had such a positive experience. They key was communication. At no point were we wondering what was going on or what the next step would be. Kate received quick care that flowed efficiently from one stage to the next. Everyone was so caring and made her feel comfortable. This makes a big difference to a child but an even bigger difference to a parent,” Mark said.

Kate’s mom Wilma also shared that a family friend had been in an accident and received the same quick, compassionate care. “We’re not the only ones who have had a great experience. We’re hearing it from our friends and neighbours too.”

caring in the emergency departmentCMH’s Emergency Department (ED) is never closed. In 2010-11, it received 52, 620 visits which is an average of over 150 people seeking medical care, each and every day of the year. One of those visits came from the Miyasaki family, who shared their experience with the Waterloo-Wellington LHIN (WWLHIN).

“ I couldn’t believe how quickly Kate was seen,” shared her father Mark Miyasaki. “The doctor explained that she had broken her leg and put a cast on. He even took Kate to a special room where she could see her x-rays and understand where the break was.”

About the Emergency DepartmentCMH’s ED department is very efficient, despite seeing a 12.5% increase in visits over the previous year. A total of 86% of ED patients at CMH were treated within provincial targets, which are four hours for patients with minor, uncomplicated conditions and eight hours for patients with complex or serious conditions. This was the best rate within the WWLHIN region.

CMH’s ED is staffed with over 60 nurses, 13 doctors, two nurse practitioners, and a social worker. The ED has two specialized units including Psychiatric Emergency with four staff and Geriatric Emergency with two nurses. The department is supported by clerks, multi-service workers, porters, housekeeping and volunteers.

Cambridge Memorial Hospital

It all started one Saturday when my patient's friend let me in on his little secret. He planned to marry his sweetheart in a few weeks. His sweetheart was one of our brave and lovely patients. Despite the fact that she was dying from cancer, it was important for both of them to express their love through marriage before she passed away. Her 11 yr. old daughter was equally delighted with this idea. Since I always love a love story I was instantly swept into the whirlwind of romance. How lovely and beautiful this would be for all three of them. However, inwardly I began to question the timing of this event as in my estimation waiting for a few weeks could be waiting too long. I expressed my concern to the groom to be and he understood and decided they would be married in a couple of days.

He had someone to perform the marriage but that was all. With just three days to organize the Groom asked me if the nurses would help with her hair and make-up that day. I knew the team would be delighted to assist. I began to process the news and with the collaboration of my coworkers, a miracle was set in motion. Shoppers Drug Mart graciously responded to our plea and a representative from the "Look good, feel better" program offered to come and help our patient with makeup and hair and even agreed to extend their services to her 11 yr. old daughter. The excitement created a ripple effect as others in the team caught the vision. We called a photographer in town who willingly agreed to capture the day in life lasting photos. The sweet touch was a donated cake from Zehrs and chocolates from Reid Chocolates. We were on a roll and the enthusiasm gained momentum. The

Paper Factory offered decorations for her room, while Red Line Limousine Service offered to pick them up and escort them to the grand and glorious Langdon Hall who provided the best room in the house. A local flower shop added beauty in flower arrangements and corsages.

The snowball effect was truly contagious and the genuine excitement within the team amazing. The staff lined the pathway to the limousine and blew bubbles as we sent them off with our love. They had their wish and were united in marriage.

Her condition deteriorated quickly after that day, but the ripple effect of the love and enthusiasm of our team in combination with the generosity of our community continues to live on.

She received first prize in the de Souza Institute’s story writing contest as part of its Annual Oncology Nursing Day. This story was especially meaningful for her as it showed the power of collaboration between her colleagues and with her community.

Since 1986, Rockwell has donated nearly $780,000 to CMH - clearly a role model for philanthropic giving.

“We are proud to support CMH,” says Rockwell Automation Canadian Trust President Jim Harding. “Our community hospital impacts the lives of everyone, including our employees and their families, and we take pride in giving back.”

Our special thanks to Rockwell Automation Canada for their outstanding support to Cambridge Memorial.

Largest Legacy Gift EverThis past year, the CMH Foundation received a $1.7 million legacy gift from Manville and Mary Helen Deir. The couple were farmers, who lived humbly, and worked hard.

When the hard work paid off, their first thought was to give back to their community. It was unlikely that they ever imagined that their estate plans could make such a sizable impact on a community hospital.

The Deirs were loyal and modest donors for more than 20 years, but never gave the Foundation any indication of their generous plans. Manville Deir received excellent care while being treated at CMH, and both he and Helen felt strongly that they wanted to support their community hospital.

The funds received from the Deir estate were used to help purchase critical patient equipment like our Fluoroscope. Friends and neighbours of the Deirs, and thousands of other community members, will continue to benefit from access to this equipment for years to come.

If your future plans include a donation to the hospital, we would love to know about your intentions! Nothing is more meaningful that the opportunity to thank you and celebrate your generosity during your lifetime. Planning ahead helps reduce taxes and teaches future generations about the power of philanthropy. Please contact us at 519-740-4966 if you would like more information about legacy giving.

Access to an MRI in Cambridge will reduce wait times for scans throughout the Region, and help to save lives through faster diagnosis.

An MRI is especially important for an acute care hospital like CMH that treats patients with cancer, musculoskeletal and neurological diseases. The fast and clear diagnoses provided by MRI will translate into quality patient care for your friends and loved ones.

When the MRI is installed in spring of 2012, the Ministry of Health will provide ongoing operating funds to run it. But we have to build it first, and that means your donations this coming year will be vitally important to our success.

Thank you for your continued generosity and support of our hospital’s vision “exceptional healthcare through exceptional people.”

Thanks to a recent gift of $1 million dollars from the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation, we are that much closer to our $4M campaign goal for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Thank You!
