From the HeadmistressDear Members of the Bryn Mawr Community,

Thank you for your generous support of Bryn Mawr during the last year! Your unwavering commitment to our vision, our mission, and most importantly, our students, is inspiring. Because of your generosity, Bryn Mawr continues to be a community where girls can find joy in tackling any challenge they wish, supported by a community of friends and mentors. Because of your gifts, I can say with confidence that we are able to offer a truly exceptional educational foundation to our students – which, of course, is exactly what our founders hoped to do when they created Bryn Mawr 130 years ago.

There are so many things to love at Bryn Mawr, from the Mawrtian spirit displayed on Spirit Days to enduring traditions like Gym Drill to the innovative curriculum offerings available in all of our divisions. Because of your generosity, our students are able to take part in global education, learn to dance, play hard on the athletic field and give back to their community. It is your financial support that makes these experiences – and so many more – possible.

Equally important to our mission are our talented, creative and caring faculty. Since the days of Edith Hamilton, our first headmistress, we have maintained a standard of teaching excellence that continues in our classrooms today. It is the generous support of donors like you that makes it possible for us to provide our faculty with the resources and training they need to give our students the education they deserve. Quite simply, your investment in Bryn Mawr helps us continue to fulfill our mission of developing young women who lead remarkable lives.

I am extraordinarily grateful for all that you do for Bryn Mawr and for our girls. Thank you for 130 and wonderful years – here’s to 130 more!

With sincere thanks,

Maureen E. Walsh Headmistress

From the Board ChairDear Members of the Bryn Mawr Community,

Thank you for your generous philanthropic support of The Bryn Mawr School last year. Your commitment and generosity helped Bryn Mawr students thrive and gain confidence in the classroom, in the science lab, on the playground, playing field, stage and out in the community. Your investment of time, talent and treasure has provided them with incredible opportunities. I am deeply grateful for all that you have contributed!

Bryn Mawr continues to be a nationally recognized leader among girls’ schools, and like all great schools, Bryn Mawr relies on support from alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends. Last year, donors gave over $2,000,000. That is simply extraordinary! And 2,022 donors gave more than $1,395,000 to the Annual Fund specifically, which provides vital support to the school’s yearly operating expenses. This unrestricted support provides us with a tremendous source of flexible dollars.

I am delighted to thank Jennie Lee Williams Fowlkes ’65 for serving as Chair of the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees. Jennie Lee’s devotion to the school is legendary, as is her commitment to wearing daisies on campus! I also want to thank Christine and Gregg Cross, P’21, for serving as Parent Chairs of the Annual Fund, and classmates Frances Leigh Swann Halstad ’81 and Carol Siegrist Caballero ’81 for serving as alumnae co-chairs of the Annual Fund. These leaders worked tirelessly throughout the year, ensuring that everyone in the community had the chance to make a gift to the Annual Fund. Please take a minute to review the full list of Annual Fund volunteers on pages 58 and 59. Their efforts have made an enormous impact at Bryn Mawr.

Most importantly, I want to thank each and every donor for your generosity. I appreciate how deeply devoted you are to ensuring that Bryn Mawr’s tradition of academic excellence continues for our students today and into the future. My own two daughters, Margaret ’14 and Catherine ’15, are now officially alumnae, and I see firsthand how Bryn Mawr’s foundation enables a lifetime of future academic and personal success. A Bryn Mawr education is an extraordinary gift that we give to all of our girls. Thank you for helping us continue this important work.

Sincerely,

Grace F. Pollack Board Chair

Making an ImpactFor Bryn Mawr students, philanthropy is part of the culture. Throughout the divisions, girls are quick to raise money for worthy causes, or collect items for those in need. And for many, like Class of 2010 alumnae Paris Bienert, Bailey Johnson, MaryAnn Massumi, Tatiana Motevalli-Oliner, and Jessica Rizzuto, that connection translates to an understanding of the vital importance of giving back to Bryn Mawr as volunteers and donors after they graduate.

Both as students and alumnae, all five have been exemplary volunteers for the school. So as they approached their fifth reunion, agreeing to serve on their class’s Reunion Committee seemed natural – just another way of staying connected. “It’s our home and our family,” reflected Tatiana. “You don’t leave that when you graduate.”

Volunteering presented a valuable opportunity both to reconnect with their classmates and to help Bryn Mawr – a place they consider a second home. “We completely grew up here,” said Jessica. “I feel like so much of who I am is because of Bryn Mawr and everything that I learned here, starting when I was five years old.”

To achieve their goal of involving as many of their classmates in the gift effort as possible, the women focused on simply catching up with their classmates after several years apart. Once they got on the phone, it turned out to be easy to encourage their classmates to make a gift in honor of their reunion. “You can have a conversation that’s about more than just money,” explained MaryAnn. “Once we got there and were reconnecting, people were much more willing to give than we expected.”

The success of their strategy is clear: they are the most successful fifth reunion class in history, boasting 73% participation. “We really just focused on participation from the beginning,” said Jessica. “[Our classmates] were very generous, but it was just about getting people to give whatever they could.”

The women said that there were several reasons that their classmates were so willing to donate in honor of the Class of 2010’s fifth reunion. “We had a lot of people who gave back for the same reasons that we got involved: a feeling of loyalty, a feeling of connection, wanting to be a part of our class,” Bailey noted.

“We were a very diverse class,” added Jessica. “I think [our success] shows how much Bryn Mawr brought us together. Even though we are all doing so many different things, we are all still able to come together and give back to the school that gave us so much.”

Another important part of the effort was the gifts made in honor of Lynley Redwood ’10, who passed away in May 2014. “I think when you’re able to give in memory of someone, it helps in your grieving process,

because you feel like you’re able to do something,” said Paris.

“It was a very celebratory gesture to honor her life,” reflected Bailey.

All five agreed that they hope that other alumnae celebrating their fifth reunions will be eager to use the

gift effort to reach out to classmates – but, they note, laughing, they also hope that their record stands for many years to come.

“It ended up being a really rewarding experience,” said Jessica. “I hope we can share that experience, but not the title!”

"It’s our home and our family.

You don’t leave that when you graduate."

For Meta “Mimi” Packard Barton ’46, attending Bryn Mawr was a family affair. Mimi’s mother, Dorothy Levering Packard, entered Bryn Mawr in 1901 at the age of 5. She graduated in 1914, having benefited from the tutelage of the school’s first headmistress, renowned classicist Edith Hamilton. Mimi’s own experience at Bryn Mawr was equally stimulating; she received the Edith Hamilton Award for academic excellence at the end of her junior year, was the Student Government Association president her senior year and also was awarded the Athletic Cup. In addition, both she and her sister, Nancy Packard King ’44, received financial assistance through the Bryn Mawr School Alumnae Scholarship to attend Vassar College.

After graduating, Mimi remained a devoted supporter of the school. So, it was natural that she would send her four daughters to Bryn Mawr, starting with Blair Lee Barton ’71 and continuing with Meta Barton Patten ’74, Taylor Barton Smith ’77 and Emilie Barton Kelly ’79. Over the years, many other women from Mimi’s family also attended Bryn Mawr, including sisters-in-law Frances Barton King ’41 and Sally Barton Willse ’40 and nieces Anne Asper Wilson ’75 and Maggie King ’82.

Mimi was an active volunteer throughout the years her daughters attended Bryn Mawr, teaching English, Latin and Greek at various times in the 1960s, serving on the

Board of Trustees from 1961–1964 and again from 1970–1972, chairing the Capital Program for Development in 1968 and editing The Bryn Mawr School Bulletin for many years. In recognition of her incredible contributions, she was selected as the Alumna of the Year in 1967.

Throughout her life, Mimi was also a faithful donor to both the Annual Fund and to capital projects. In addition, she took the important step of joining the Ex Solo Ad Solem Society, Bryn Mawr’s planned giving recognition society. Members of Ex Solo Ad Solem like Mimi are critical to Bryn Mawr’s financial foundation,

as they provide for both the immediate, short-term and long-term needs of the school. There are a variety of planned giving options, including bequests, gifts of appreciated securities, real estate, or life insurance; and/or charitable income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder unitrusts, and charitable remainder annuity trusts.

Mimi Barton passed away at her home in Florida in April 2015 at the age of 86. But through her generosity, her legacy will continue. “We are so grateful to donors like Mimi who include Bryn Mawr in their estate planning,” said Director of Development Julie Smith Marshall ’89. “Their support is critical to ensuring that we are able to continue to provide an incredible education to our girls.”

FOUNDERS CIRCLE

The Bryn Mawr School was founded in 1885 by five

young women with a unique vision: to provide girls the

opportunity to receive the same quality of education

then available to boys. It was a radical idea for its time.

Eschewing traditional beliefs, M. Carey Thomas, Mary

Elizabeth Garrett, Mamie Gwinn, Bessie Tabor King and

Julia Rebecca Rogers gave girls the chance to thrive in a

supportive, yet challenging, environment.

The Founders Circle, Bryn Mawr’s Annual Fund leadership

giving recognition society, is inspired by these bold and

generous women. Sincere thanks to the following Annual

Fund donors who are members of the Founders Circle.

REUNION GIVING

Reunions provide a great opportunity for alumnae to

celebrate their years at Bryn Mawr and to demonstrate

their ongoing commitment to the mission of the school

by giving back. Reunion classes for the 2014–2015 school

year – those classes ending in 0 or 5 – made significant

contributions to Bryn Mawr in honor of their reunions.

Reunion Giving Awards

Reunion giving awards are based on gifts and pledges received by 11:59 p.m. on May 1, the Friday evening of Alumnae Weekend. This year, Alumnae Weekend festivities will take place on October 9 and 10, and the classes will be recognized at that time.

The Reunion Participation Prize goes to the class with the most outstanding participation in its reunion gift effort. This year the award goes to the class celebrating its 50th reunion – the Class of 1965 – with 100% participation! Congratulations to all the members of the class, and special thanks to reunion committee members Anna Anderson Borg, Christie Carrick Coe, Jennie Lee Williams Fowlkes, Margaret Smith Green, Jamie Miller Kozumbo, Gail Inman Prather and Ann Asper Wilson.

The Young Alumnae Reunion Participation Prize goes to one of the four youngest reunion classes with the highest class participation in its reunion giving effort. This year’s recipient is the Class of 2010 with 73% participation. With a class of almost 70 women, that is quite a feat! Congratulations to the committee for working tirelessly on the school’s behalf: Paris Bienert, Bailey Johnson, MaryAnn Massumi, Tatiana Motevalli-Oliner and Jessica Rizzuto.

Many classes reached over 70% participation, including the Classes of 1950, 1965, 1970, 1990, and 2010.

The Reunion Gift Award goes to the class that raises the most in terms of dollars for the Annual Fund in its reunion year. The Class of 1965 wins this year’s Reunion Gift Award for raising $38,237 for Bryn Mawr’s Annual Fund. Again, many thanks to the committee: Anna Anderson Borg, Christie Carrick Coe, Jennie Lee Williams Fowlkes, Margaret Smith Green, Jamie Miller Kozumbo, Gail Inman Prather and Ann Asper Wilson.

Other notable gift efforts: the Class of 1995 raised an incredible $24,000 for the Annual Fund this year, and the Class of 1977 raised over $23,000.

Several reunion classes surpassed the $10,000 mark, including the Classes of 1945, 1950, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1985 and 2000.

The Overall Reunion Gift Award goes to the reunion class that raises the most dollars overall for Bryn Mawr. Annual Fund gifts, as well as all other contributions to capital projects and to the endowment, are included. This year’s Overall Reunion Gift Award goes to a class with a grand total of $48,487 – the Class of 1965.

Thank you once again to all who made this year’s reunions and reunion gift efforts successful.
