ASQ movement is spreading very fast in India. Our Ahmedabad LMC has been torch bearer in some of the activities of ASQ India. Every year during the month of November which is celebrated as Quality Month worldwide, we celebrate it by conducting the Annual Quality Conference at Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad. 1. Objective: The objective was to encourage sharing of Best Quality practices and Research papers among the community including Industry, Academia, Students & Practitioners through organizing Annual Quality Conference. 2. Organizers: The conference was organized by ASQ Ahmedabad LMC jointly with the Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad. 3. Date & Time of conference: On 15th November, 2014 from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM at Auditorium of Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad. 4. Details of participants: There were about 350 participants which include 65% from Industry and 35% from academia covering eight states of India. There were four International speakers. One International speaker was joined through WebEx to address the audience. Five ASQ Fellows were also present to grace the occasion. 5. Unique Feature:

“Quality Management for Zero Defect and Zero Effect” Awards to more 90 ASQ Student members who have successfully completed

their one year certification course Participations and case studies from 8 states of India and 3 International

6. Details of deliberation during the conference: Registration: The seminar started with registration of participants (8:30AM to 9:00AM). The registration desks were very well organized by ASQ student volunteers. Inauguration session: Mr. I V Rao, Executive Advisor, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. and Director, Maruti Centre for Excellence was the Chief Guest for the Conference. Dr. Johannes Grobe, MD, Bosch Rexroth India Ltd. and Mr. Amit Chatterjee, MD, ASQ India were the Guest of Honors for the conference. Dr. Anup Singh, Director General, Nirma University was the presiding over for the conference. Dr. Johannes Grobe, Mr. Amit Chatterjee, Mr. I V Rao, Dr. Anup Singh, Dr. Himanshu Trivedi and Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh K Jain inaugurated the conference with lighting the lamp. Dr. Himanshu Trivedi, Chair-ASQ LMC Ahmedabad briefed about the ASQ LMC Ahmedabad progress. He informed that many of the activities undertaken by Ahmedabad LMC are unique and benchmark activities which include; Annual Certification Scheme for Engineering students, LMC meetings, Seminars & other workshops at different institutes and locations. During the inauguration session of the conference, the first ever book of ASQ LMC Ahmedabad and ASQ India was released. This ASQ India Publication titled “Quality Management for Zero Defect and Zero Effect” includes the shortlisted case studies of 2014 and past year’s seminar’s case studies which add value to any organization who are towards the journey of Excellence. The Chief Guest of the conference Mr. I V Rao emphasized on how Quality Management can help in achieving the Organizational Excellence. He delivered a speech on how Maruti Suzuki Group is practicing various Quality management practices. He concluded that India has potential to become The Economical Powerful country in future. The Guest of Honor of the conference Dr. Johanness Grobe called attention to Importance of proactive approach in realizing Organizational Excellence. He has

very briefly explained about some of the elements which makes the Bosch Rexroth Ahmedabad plant heading towards the journey of Organizational Excellence. Another Guest of Honour, Mr. Amit Chatterjee emphasize on how Quality Management has become necessary to achieve the Organizational Excellence. He also brief about the Quality awareness activities carried out by various forums of ASQ in India and worldwide. The presiding over of the conference Dr. Anup Singh reiterate the importance of Quality concepts for the Excellence in Education. How Quality tools & techniques is helpful to make the students understand the difficult concepts in an easy way. Learning from Top Management session: After the inauguration session, there was a session named as “Learning from Top Management” in which four eminent Quality professionals from Top Management of Well known organizations put forward their experience and views about how to achieve Organizational Excellence by Quality Management. Dr. Manu Vora (Chairman & President, Business Excellence Inc., USA) talked over the Role of Leadership in achieving Organizational Excellence. He very rightly distinguish the leadership with management. He also mentioned some of the great past leaders who contribute for the noble cause of the society. Mr. Jaimin Shah (Co-Founder & MD, Dev Information Technology Pvt. Ltd.-India and Founder, Dev Info-Tech North America Ltd., Canada) shared his views about the importance of Organization Excellence in todays era and ways to achieve it. Mr. Jon Fletcher (SVP-Mfg, RPG Cables) delivered his speech on Journey to Excellence. He brief about the 10 basics of Excellence and provide minute details about each basics in a much simpler and easy way. He also gave importance on documentation to achieve the long term Organizational Excellence. Mr. Debashis Sarkar (ASQ Fellow, Author, Philip Crosby Medalist & Global Head, Reengineering, Standard Chartered) talked over the various ideas about the change which are necessary to achieve the Organizational Excellence.

Technical Sessions: After the Learning from Top Management session, there were five parallel Technical Sessions in which total 25 presentations were made which include different sectors like Academia, Bereaucracy, Ceramic, Finance, Food Processing, Government, Healthcare, Hydraulics, Pharma, Power, Process, Shipbuilding etc. Mr. Madhu Madhavan, MD & CEO, Cubic Quality was the Session Chair for the Technical Session1. In the first parallel technical session, Mr. T S Kathayat (Welspun Corp. Ltd.) presented on performing FMEA for achieving good results- Driver for Continual improvement; Mr. Gaurang Mehta & Mr. Johnson P. R. (Bosch Rexroth India Ltd.) presented on Quality Improvement project quality in ETO. Mr. Sanjay Patolia (ABB Ltd.) presented on Supply development process improvement. Mr. Bhavin Vora (Technocrat Consultant) presented on Quality Management System for politics and bureaucracy. Mr. Sapankumar Bardhan (Bardhan Associates) presented on Quality Excellence through daily work management & management reviews. Mr. Hemant Urdhwareshe, ASQ Fellow & Director, Institute of Quality & Reliability was the Session Chair for the Technical Session2. Mr. Sukumar Karmakar & Miss Gargee Ghosh (Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages) presented on Waste Power Elimination- Gujarat. Dr. Sanjay Dalsania (Apollo Hospitals Internationsl Ltd.) presented on Improving safety of patients through Healthcare Risk Management). Mr. Ramdas Menon (Ekaagra Solutions) presented on Application of Taguchi Designs in the Pharma Industry. Mr. Nivi Kansal & Mr. Sathishkumar (Murugappa Morgan Thermal Ceramic Ltd.) presented on Enhancement of Electrode life in submerged electric resistance electric furnace. Mr. Pankaj Tahiliani & Mr. Sunil Singh (Reliance Industries Ltd.-Dahej Manufacturing Division) presented on Quality Concepts at Gas Cracker Plant. Mr. Anshuman Tiwari, ASQ Fellow, Head of Process Consulting-India, HSBC was the Session Chair for the Technical Session3. Mr. Bhavin Vora (Technocrat Consultant) presented on Managing business risk through information safety & business continuity management system for manufacturing sector. Mrs. Hemangi Patel (Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Institute of Technology (SVNIT)-Surat) presented on Quality & Productivity Improvement in Small Scale Industry. Mr.

Kanal Bandyopadhyay & Mr. Prahlad Mhatreare (Reliance Industries Ltd.) presented on Lean operations at accounts payable process to achieve paperless office. Mr. Abhimanyu Samrat & Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Jain (Samrat Corporate Consultants Pvt. Ltd. & Institute of Management, Nirma University) presented on 5S implementation in Government Health Centres. Mr. Atul Bhansali & Mr. Kaushik Bhuva (Ferromatic Milacron India Pvt. Ltd.) presented on Cost Reduction in Magna Toggle 150 Gates & Guarding through Value Engineering. Mr. Suresh Patel, Lean & Quality Practitioner was the Session Chair for the Technical Session4. Mr. Kaushal Mehta presented on 5 Quality Myths – Busted!. Dr. Mahesh Patel & Dr. Poonam Shukla (Apollo Hospitals International Ltd.) presented on 5S in Healthcare – Process Excellence & Cost Optimization: A Case study from Apollo Hospitals. Mr. Pravin Makwana (Reliance Industries Ltd.-Dahej Manufacturing Division) presented on Increasing Production at Polymer plant. Mr. Rajesh Sharma (Gunnebo India Private Limited) presented on Quality problem solving through Gemba & A3 thinking. Mr. Himanshu Bhatt (Larsen & Toubro Ltd. Hazira Manufacturing Complex) presented on Integration of PDCA cycle across the business functions. Dr. Tushar Desai, Associate Professor, SVNIT, Surat & IIIE Surat-Chapter Chairman was the Session Chair for the Technical Session5. Mr. Nital Zaveri (Concept Business Excellence Pvt. Ltd.) presented on Beware of Copy and Paste while you create a road map for Organizational Excellence. Mr. Sathishkumar & Mr. Umapathy (Murugappa Morgan Thermal Ceramic Ltd.) presented on Blown Fibrisation-Yield Improvement. Mr. Amit Jariwala, Miss Nehal Mistry & Mr. Nihar Shah (HDFC Bank) presented on Cash Management – Cost Rationalization. Mr. Anil Singh Sanger (Reliance Industries Ltd.) presented on Designing buying process for small items. Mr. Jainender Jain (Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages) presented on Cooler productivity improvement. Valedictory session: ASQ Ahmedabad LMC believes that any achievement should be honored to motivate the achiever and others. In this way, ASQ Certified members who have passed any ASQ Certification exam from Ahmedabad centre were honored with mementos in the valedictory session by Guest of Honors Mr. I V Rao, Mr. Amit Chatterjee & Dr. Johanness Grobe.

Nine ASQ Faculties who voluntarily teach the modules of Annual Certification Course for Engineering students to ASQ students at GEC-Bhavnagar and PDPU-Gandhinagar were also honored with mementos for their contribution to guide and mentor the future engineers. This conference was supported by many industries at different levels: Bosch Rexroth India Ltd. was the Event Sponsor of this conference. Minitab was the Sponsor of this conference. ABB Ltd., BSI, Concept Business Excellence Pvt. Ltd., Kalupur Bank, TUV India, TUV Sud, Zeiss were the Co-sponsors of this conference. The conference was supported by three well-known associations named as Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Indian Institution of Industrial Engineer (IIIE) and Rajkot Management Association (RMA). Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages was the beverage partner for this conference. We had two exhibitor support for this conference named as K K Publishers, Chennai and Infotech Standard India Ltd. who had kept their stall on the day of the conference and the participants were very delighted after visiting the stalls. The exhibitors were also happy after receiving such a great response from participants. ASQ Ahmedabad LMC has continued the Annual Certification Scheme for Engineering students of GEC-Bhavnagar and PDPU-Gandhinagar. This includes six module course for 3rd year and 4th year Engineering students. The second batch of GEC-Bhavnagar and first batch of PDPU-Gandhinagar have successfully completed this certification course. Total 90 students received certificates in the valedictory session in front of the Quality professionals from Industry and academia. It was the unique occasion when five ASQ Fellows out of total nine ASQ Fellows in India were present under the conference banner of ASQ LMC Ahmedabad. They all were felicitated with mementos for their contribution. Dr. Manu Vora had also joined this moment through WebEx from USA. He also addressed the participants and brief them about the importance and procedure of ASQ Fellow. With the presence of ASQ Fellows and Dr. Manu Vora, all the participants were fascinated.

7. Feedback: There was excellent feedback received from participants. Usefulness of the seminar was rated “Excellent” by 70% and “Very Good” by 45% respondents. 65% of respondents were Very happy and satisfied with Quality and Contents of the book released; Overall 65% respondents rated the conference as “Excellent” and “Very Good” whereas 40% rated “Good”. Many ASQ and Non-ASQ members are getting ready to join this movement of spreading the Quality knowledge by actively volunteering in ASQ LMC activities. 8. Conclusion: This conference has truly served its purpose by gathering the Quality professionals on a single platform to share their Best practices and research work with others. It was like an International Conference with participants from various states of India and few International speakers. 9. Conference takeaway: Each participant was given kit which include pen, writing pad, a book titled as Quality Management for Zero Defect and Zero Effect and Rucksack bag printed with ASQ logo. Each participant was given participant certificate and each case study presenter was given a memento (with print of ASQ Ahmedabad LMC) as well as certificate. We also gave appreciation certificates to each volunteer for their contribution. All Sponsors at different level and supporters were also appreciated for their support by awarding them memento as a memory of this seminar. Five ASQ Fellows were felicitated with mementos. 10.
