    1 .0 INTRODUCTION:

    M / s N V P Foods, Bykampady, M angalore pr oposes to constru ct a wareh ouse at their s i te at

    Bykampady Industr ia l Area. In order to evaluate bearing capacity of the si te, soi l

    invest igat ion was conducted in Apri l 2012. This is a report g iv ing the observat ions made at

    the site, analysis and recom m endat io ns.

    2.0 SITE RECON N AISSAN CE:

    The proposed site was adjacent to ODC road in Bykampady Industr ia l Area. The site was

    orig inal ly a w ater logged area w hich w as f i l led up recent ly.

    3.0 OBJECT AN D SCOPE:

    The invest iga t ion w as carr ied out to obt a in :

    a) Subsoi l str at i f icat ion

    b) Physical and Engineering p rop ert ies of soi l layers

    c) Level of subsoi l w ater

    d) Type o f found at ion su i tab le fo r the s t ructure .

    W ith t hese ob ject ives, the scope o f t he w ork com pr ised o f

    a) Sinking f ive explorat ory b oreho les.

    b) Condu ct ing Standard Penetr at ion Test at regular dep th in b oreho les.

    c) Observing the level of subsoi l w ater.

    d ) Preparing a detai led report with observat ions made at s i te, borelog, test

    resu l ts and recom m endat ions.

    4.0 DETAILS OF INV ESTIGATIO N:

    In order t o know the so i l p ro f i le and eng ineer ing propert ies o f so i l at d i f fe rent dept hs, f ive

    exploratory boreholes were sunk at locat ions shown in Fig.1 .The boreholes were sunken

    upto hard strata using Calyx dri l l ing r ig. Diamond bit was used to dri l l in hard strata.

    Standard Penetr at ion Test w as conducted in side th e boreh oles at every 1.5m inter val.

    5.0 RESULTS OF IN VESTIGATIO N :

    Soi l for m at ion at t he si te can be general ized as fo l low s:

    1. Top f i l led up layer 1 to 2m th ick

    2. Very weak c lay 6 to 11m th ick wi th N va lues betw een 0 and 3

    3. Reddish gray si l ty sand w ith gravel 2m thick w ith N value 7

    4. W hit ish green com ple te ly weathered rock 3 to 6m th ick N va lues 4 to 12

    5. Yel lowish m odera te ly to h igh ly w eathered rock at 11 .5 to 16m depth , N > 100.

    6. Hard rock met a t 20m at BH1 locat ion .

    6.0 AN ALYSIS O F RESU LTS

    6.1 Bearing capacity for shallow foun dation s

    Soil strata at t he si te comp rised of h ighly com pressible soft c lay at the t op. This layer w as 6

    to 11m thick. Due to th e presence of t h is weak soi l , shal low foun dat ion s are not suitable for

    heavi ly loaded structures as th is wi l l induce large sett lement. For l ight ly loaded structures,

    iso la ted foundat ions can be adopted a f te r im prov ing ground by pr ov id ing we l l compacted

    boulder packed with sand 0.5m thick below foot ings. Bearing capacity 5T/m 2 shall be

    adopted fo r foo t ings less than 2m w ide laid a t 2m dept h on im proved ground.

    6.2 Pile founda t ions

    Pile foun dat ion s shal l be adopt ed for h eavi ly loaded stru ctures.

    As per IS:2911 Part-I Sec 2-2010 , pile lo ad capacity:

    Load capacit y Q = cu1 N c + cu2

    = shear str ength o f rock below base of p i le

    N c = bearing capacity f actor, taken as 9

    B = Pi le d iam eter

    Fs = Factor o f safety = 3 = 0.9cu2 = average shear strength of rock in socketed length of

    pi le.

    L = socket length of p i le.

    For h ighly w eathered rock, as per cod e, cu1 = cu2 = 600 kN/ m2

    Capaci ty o f 500m m d ia p i le socketed 4 t im es its d ia (2m ) in w eathered rock:

    Q = 600x9x + 0.9x600x

    = 918.9 kN say 90 Ton

    7 .0 CON CLUSION S AND RECOM M END ATIONS:

    1.0 The site w as orig inal ly a wat er logged area which w as recent ly f i l led up .

    2.0 Soft compressible clay was present in the top. Thickness of soft c lay varied

    f rom 6 to 11m at the var ious boreho le locat ions.

    3.0 Due to the presence of soft compressible clay, shal low foundat ions are not

    suitable for heavi ly loaded structu res.

    4.0 For l igh t ly loaded s t ructures, sha l low foundat ions w i th w id th less than 2m can

    be adopted. These foot ings shal l be la id af ter improving ground by laying

    packed bou lder sand bed 0 .5m th ick . Ground improvement sha l l be done

    at least 0.5m out side the edges of foot ings.

    5.0 Bear ing capaci ty recomm ended for sha l low foundat ions la id a t 2m depth and

    rest ing on im proved ground is 5 T/ m 2

    6.0 Pile foundat ion shal l be adopted for heavi ly loaded structures. Load carrying

    capacity of p i les:

    Pile capacity (Ton) 70 90 120

    The pi les shal l be socketed at least 4 t im es i ts d iam eter in hard strata (N > 100)

    or r est ing on h ard rock.
