1 REPORT Abeda Inamdar Senior College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Pune in coordination with the Department of Adult and Continuing Education and Extension University of Pune, has organized a lecture Series entitled ‘Minority Women Literacy Week’ from 10 th Sept. 2013 to 14 th Sept. 2013. The theme of the programme was to orient students about various dimensions of literacy which they need in their day to day life and towards the mature understanding about society they live. The objectives of the programme were as follows- To orient teenage girls / college students towards various aspects of literacy. To organize lectures by imminent professors on the topics discussing various aspects of literacy It was decided to organize three lecture by eminent speaker as follows- 1. Social Literacy – by Dr. Shruti Tambe, Associate Professor, Sociology Department, University of Pune. 2. Legal Literacy – by Adv. A.U. Pathan, Ex-Vice President and Member of Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, Ex-Member WAKF Board Maharashtra. 3. Economic Literacy – Dr. Sharmishtha Satav-Matkar, HOD, Department of Economics, fergusson college, Pune The first day was 10 th Sept. 2013. The inaugural programme was at 10 a.m. The chief guest of the programme was Dr. Dhananjay Lokhande, Director, Adult Continuing Education and Extension, University of Pune. The programme started with Tilwat-E-Quran by student Ms. Anisa. It was followed by welcome speech by Prin. Dr. E.M. Khan.

After the felicitation programme Dr. Jayashree Upadhye, coordinator of the programme spoke about International Literacy week and explained the theme of the programme.

Then Dr. Shruti Tambe took over the floor. With her fluent language and effective gestures she caught the attention of audience. She started with not only literary but the broader meaning of social literacy in contemporary situation.

She gave various references of social thinkers and their cats and thoughts and explained very need of social literacy in the changing scenario with not only globalization but changing faiths, beliefs and values in the changing world with information technology. Also she insisted that the each and every individual needs to be sensitive one to maintain peace in the society. For the purpose she said that, the girls in the audience need to take the ‘Mashal’ of the knowledge towards the corners of the society who are deprived of the knowledge about social responsibility and share their squerill share in the change taking place in the society in the coming time.

Her lecture was well appreciated by girls and thesession ended with couple of questions and answers for the same.

The second lecture was by Adv. A.U. Pathan. He Spoke on ‘Legal Literacy’. Dr. Jayashree Upadhye welcomed the participants and felicitated the guest.

Adv. A. U. Pathan is renowned orator and has command over English, Hindi, Urdu,

Persian, Marathi and even Sanskrit. His lecture was multilingual and students were very much

pleased with his informal way of explaining various articles pertaining to law.

He gave detailed information about National Legal Literacy Mission. He spoke about

the fundamental rights conferred on citizens of India by our constitution.

Adv. A.U. Pathan on ‘Legal Literacy’

He spoke about the Laws pertain to marriage. Also he differentiated between Hindu and

Muslim marriage act. Special laws for Muslim women related to ‘Talaque’, Laws related to

child marriage and provisions for the same. His presentation was live as he mentioned about

various interesting cases for the support of the laws he mentioned. His lecture was full of

‘’kk;jh’ and quotes. The students enjoyed his lecture very much.

The third lecture was by Dr. Sharmistha Satav-Matkar, Associate Professor and

Head Dept. of Economics, Fergusson College, Pune. . She Spoke on ‘Economic Literacy’. Dr.

Jayashree Upadhye welcomed the participants and explained the theme of the programme i.e.

Economic Literacy.

Dr. Jayashree Upadhye felicitated the guest with the flowerpots and decorative

Dr. Sharmishtha Satav- Matkar has 31 years experience of teaching, research and

renowned recourse person in economics. She started with the exchange rate issue in the

country and how we as a common men / women are concerned with it.

From that she spoke about export import and why it is necessary to know about import

export of the country and balance of payment situation of the country. She spoke about

agriculture, industry and tertiary sector and its interdependence and its r4elation to growth and

development of the country. She also spoke about the problem of unemployment and how the

probable solutions to it are related with economic literacy. For the purpose she insisted that

everybody should daily read news papers and if the news are not understood by themselves get

it clarified from concerned teachers.

Her lecture was well received by participants because she explained the economic terms

used by her in a very simple language. Her lecture demonstrated the depth of the knowledge

and her capacity to reach to the level of students make them understand the concept well.

About 314 students participated in the programme for three days.The programme was

successful due to the able guidance of Prin. Dr. E.M. Khan and cooperation by committee

members and non teaching staff. The committee members Ms. Uzma Tasneem, Ms. Shinde

Vijayalaxmi, Mr. Rahul More, Mr. Mallebri Nisar , Ms. Eram Khan, Ms. Farzana Shaikh, Ms.

Gauri Devasthale and Ms. Anjali Kedari worked hard towards the success of the programme.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Jayashree Upadhye.
