1.0 ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND AND STRUCTURE

1.1 History of Establishment

Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sendirian Berhad (KLSSB) is as its name is a logistic

transport business which is sub-con to the Exxon Mobil Company. KLSSB is being leaded by

Mr. KJ Teo as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director of the company. It was

established in Gebeng Base at Kuantan on September 2006. Until now, a lot of people will be

hired to make sure the operations done clearly.

Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sdn.Bhd recognizes the need to ensure that, as far as practical,

the workplace is free of industrial hazardous materials which are injurious to safety and health.

In pursuant of this need the waste management control is of utmost importance in the control of

occupational diseases and minimization of impacts to environment. It is the responsibility of

every employee to fully understand and observe the waste management objective, in order to

make our base a safe and orderly place to work.

Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sendirian Berhad was started with Lord Security at the first

time as a headquarters at Petaling Jaya. After a year they run their business, they improve a lot

and then came out with Lord Safe also at Petaling Jaya. Lord Safe produces a safety tools and

equipments like a safety boxes. After a year later, the CEO got a contract with the Exxon Mobil

Company and builds the Lord Saberkat as a logistic transportation company to send the petrol

and diesel to the stations as a service.

The most important thing when we work in this high risk and also danger area, the

word safety always bear in mind. It is because we should careful about the products that we

carried out. The drivers can not smoke in the trucks because it can be a danger if the trucks

explode. So the drivers should wear a safety tools and equipments like goggle, safety shoes,

safety helmet, and glove and so on to not let any bad incidents happen. Every truck also has their

own fire extinguisher.

So far, Lord Saberkat has a five branch yard. There are located in the Pasir Gudang at

Johor, Lukut at Port Dickson Negeri sembilan, Seberang Prai at Pulau Pinang, Gambang and

Gebeng at Kuantan,Pahang. All of the four bases sent the petrol and diesel to the stations except

the Gambang Base, they are sent the chemicals product but it is also in the same roots.

Since I was born, my family and I had stayed at Gebeng, Kuantan, so I choose Gebeng

Base at Kuantan to doing my industrial training that should be undergo almost six month. In this

KLSSB at Gebeng Base they have thirty eight employees and just eight people as a staffs and

thirty people as drivers. Besides that, here has thirteen trucks and drivers must working in two

shifts. Gebeng Base was covered in area Peninsular Malaysia that is Pahang, Terengganu and

Kelantan. In this three states, KLSSB sent the petrol’s and diesels to the about forty stations.

They have gone full force into services area to serve their customers better. This not only will

serve to provide their customers with a support base but also create a unique Malaysian identity

incorporating a fully fledged service oriented and customer satisfaction business.

The objective of Industrial Training Program is to expose students to real-life working

environment and get acquainted with the organization structure, business operations and

administrative functions.

This industrial training not only acquainted with the working environment, but it also can

improve student’s knowledge. It can give student bare with the program that they are

committing. Because of that, they can get an experience and can consolidate a knowledge that

they get at university.

Industrial training give a chance for students to get an information about the new market

work that involved the determine skills needed by industry further on can help student build the

ground skills and how the way to communicate, management and entrepreneur. Many students

not give an attention to the peripheral skills whereas it is the most important thing in everybody

to be a successful worker and necessarily all students must have it.

Students also may have to face a problem when they enter the working environment. The

work place and people in the company may give a problem to the students, but then they have to

involve in getting a solution to settle the problem. Students need to adapt the workplace and

people around them.

From the experience they get in this industrial training, if the same thing happens again in

future, student can face it. Students also can see all shapes of risk in an organization and problem

that they have to face it when work and they can settle it by itself.

Other than that, industrial training also can give many exposes to the students in the latest

and new technology that have in working sector which we not learned in the university. The

development of the technology that move fast only we can learn during the industrial training

further can improve knowledge and interested to learn in the domain that we take.

Last but not least, it can be an advantage for students that do the internship program. So,

they have prepared to face the real-life working environment.

2.2 Objective of Practical Training Report

The objective of writing this report is to inform that I have learnt so many things from

industrial training that I have done for almost six months start from 1st June till 12th November

2010. This duration is quite long for an internship program and there are many benefits from this

industrial training course.

Students that have finished with the industrial training have to make a report that is

compulsory to complete the 3 years course in University Malaya. In these report, students have

to yield a complete report and a quality develop since the program, conclusion with the work that

has been done or learn, organization profile and others to complete the last terms in doing an

industrial training and further students can finished their study and graduate.

Writing report is very important because it is use after students finished the internship

program and also when student go to the nature of works. The report can be used as a guideline

for students because in real work we have to prepare a lot of report such as company profile

report, operational report, and financial report and so on and so forth.

By doing this report, we can improve our writing skills and what things need to be inside the

report. Preparing a report not only can improve writing skills, but it also can improve English

language. In other words, report is a good thing in preparing students to face the new

environment that has a lot of challenging other than doing an industrial training only.

Besides that, I can tell my useful experience to be share as a student that will join

in real working life soon. There is happiness, stress, sadness and I also can say suffer feeling in

an effort to this industrial training that I can share with others. So, I hope with this industrial

training not only me, but other people also can get benefit and useful information regarding

industrial training.

I started to apply for internship program when I was in third year semester 2. There were

some procedures in applying for internship program. These procedures have been arranged by

Faculty of Business and Accountancy (FBA), University of Malaya (UM).

I have attended two workshops which is preparatory programmed for industrial training

that organizes by Centre for Industrial Training & Relations (CITRA) University of Malaya as

one of the condition. I have taken ‘Communication Styles & Interpersonal Communication

Workshop’ and ‘Keep That Job Workshop’ to get certification of participation from CITRA UM.

Then, I have followed another step which was getting the application letter from FBA

and approval from Coordinator of Industrial Training of the faculty. Then, I have sent the

application letter to the companies I intend to apply for industrial training. I also have followed

up the companies to know whether there was any places for me to undergo my internship for the

period I have choose.

The company accepted my application letter and offered for doing industrial training in

this company. I accept the offer. I was agreed and commenced my industrial training at

Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sendirian Berhad at Kuantan branch, Pahang.

3.0 WORKING EXPERIENCES / SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Practical training give opportunities to students to assist the gain real-world credentials,

develop job opportunities with the state‘s existing companies and enhance the strengths of

current cooperative education. A work experience opportunity is a student work experience that

is closely related to the student’s course of study.

Along the period of my industrial training in Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sendirian Berhad

almost six months starting from 1st June 2010 until 12th November 2010, I was assigned to

administration department under my supervisor, Haji Mustafa Bin Haji Munji.

I have learnt so many things that teach me and give me preparation to face the real work

life in the future. For about two years and half in the University of Malaya, many concept and

theory of business administration I have learnt through lecturer and tutorial that given to me to be

practice and apply in examination and try to get the best result. There were also tasks or

assignment that has been given to me either in group or individual to be settled and submit the

tasks to the lecturer for certain period of time frame.

Through the training I had received at Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sdn Bhd, I manage to

learn a few important things such as safety, self-discipline, time management, and the ability to

adapt to all given tasks. I have also learnt things such as administration. For example, I have

learned to do a calculated the kilometers how far the trucks go , prepare a minutes meeting and

calculated diesel consumptions.

As in the administration department, I implement what I have learned in University

Malaya such as preparing a minute of meeting, letter and making deals with the suppliers. I also

learnt to prepare a memo for the employees in KLSSB. Besides that, I’m also preparing the

reports after calculating the kilometers how far the trucks go and needs to be done for every end

of month to sent to the headquarter.

I am not only learnt administration; I also learnt technical skills such as thinking out of

the box and problem solving. Safety is a very important thing in this field. Self -discipline, time

management, and commitments are crucial criteria to be able to adapt to the working

environment.

4.0 RELATED COURSES

The practical training enables a student to investigate a particular interest or career

option. The emphasis is on the field experience, which is supplemented by appropriate written

work. This practical training requires a minimum of 8 hours per week spent at the field

placement and carries. Other than that, practical training also is integrated with the academic

component of the internship.

As a student, I always was taught to think critically and try to solve the problem in

studying theoretically. In the real work place also, thinking is important which I need to be

innovative and try to solve some critical problem that might happen.

During the course of practical training, my task in the office was relevance with several

courses that I have taken at University Malaya. The present work experience I do in

administration department.

4.1 Human Resource Management (HRM)

Human Resource Management is the strategic and coherent approach to the management

of an organization’s most valued asset to the people working there who individually and

collectively contributes to the achievement of the objectives of the business.

In KLSSB, they use a Human Resource Management (HRM) as an innovative view of

workplace management than the traditional approach. For example, they use HRM functions in

their activities such as hire employees to fill the needs, recruiting and training the best

employees, ensuring they are high performers, dealing with performance and compensation,

employee records and personnel policies.

The staffs also give me training before I do my work such as making a memo and letter,

monthly report, diesel consumptions and so on. They teach me how to make it and after train me,

I can do it myself.

Other than that, before they want to hire employees, they make short listed candidates

that related with the job to attend an interview. After interview they have to choose the best

candidates that they want to hire. HR Department as playing a major role in staffing, training and

helping to manage people so that people and the organization are performing at maximum

capability in a highly fulfilling manner.

4.2 Company Law

Company Law is the law of the most dominant kind of business enterprise in the modern

world. It is related with any organization that engages in business. Konsortium Lord Saberkat

Sendirian Berhad must follow the Exxon Mobil rules and regulations because Exxon Mobil has a

right to make a law depend on the act. While the products that they produce must passes the ISO

first.

. Since the practical training, I also have to make a contract for workers. It is related with

the company law that I have put all the terms and conditions before enter in this company. For

example, the new drivers still in training a month before they can be an employee to this

company and if they make a mistake the training can be a quite long.

4.3 English Communication

Business English means different things to different people. For some, it focuses on

vocabulary and topics used in the worlds of business, trade, finance and international relations. I

used it in the communications skills in the workplace and also focused on the language and skills

needed for typical business communication such as small talk, socializing, report writing and so

on.

Before this, at the university I have practice with lecturer when attend an interview.

During my industrial training, sometimes when I pick up and answered the phone calls from

suppliers especially Chinese, I must speak in English to make a conversations. Besides that to

reconfirm the order from Bangkok, I also should speak in English. It helps me a lot in improving

my communication skills.

4.4 Financial Management

Financial Management are planning, directing, monitoring, organizing and controlling of

the monetary resources of an organization. It refers to that discipline which includes all the

activities which of financial or monetary in nature, by this we can easily say that all the activities

which pertains to the monetary transactions directly or indirectly comes under financial

management.

My experience in this industrial training at KLSSB, I learnt a few things about

accounting that has related with financial management. I have learnt about outstanding payment

for supplier. When we received an invoice from supplier, I have to checking the invoice whether

is it true or not and make sure the amounts are correct as same as in the delivery order (DO).

4.5 Business Ethics

Ethics is a branch of philosophy which seeks to address questions about morality, that is

about concepts such as good and bad, right and wrong, justice and virtue. The development and

implementation of ethical practices in the workplace has become a management discipline in and

of itself. On a simple level, this means treating employees fairly, producing a quality, safe

product, striving to continuously improve customer service and acting in a socially and

environmentally responsible manner.

In Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sendirian Berhad, ethics in workplace are very important

because without it, they cannot success and improve in their business. First of all, they treat their

employees in lower level management specially the drivers fairly even they are just the drivers.

Besides that, the employees also not cheated when they are working for example the time they

rest and sleep. It should be written in the list to make an easy for calculate their salary end of the

month.

Next is, we not give and also take the bribery for example when we have the crossover

we should pay to the dealers in the station the price of petrol or diesel that they are loses. We can

not give them the bribes to shut up their mouth.

4.6 Principles of Management

Principles of Management are statements of fundamental truth. These principles serve as

guidelines for decisions and actions of manager. The specialization of the workforce according to

the skills a person, creating specific personal and professional development within the labor

force and therefore increasing productivity leads to specialization which increases the efficiency

of labor. By separating a small part of work, the workers speed and accuracy in its performance

increases.

This principle is applicable to both technical as well as managerial work. Konsortium

Lord Saberkat Sendirian Berhad also uses principle of management in their company. For

example, the issue of commands followed by responsibility for their consequences. Other than

that, the right of a superior to give order to his subordinates and this is call authority. On the

other hand, responsibility means obligation for performance. KLSSB also implement the

principle of management in their discipline that is refers to obedience, proper conduct in relation

to others and respect of authority.

5.0 PROBLEMS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

During my practical training at KLSSB for 6 months, I learnt and see a real-life working

environment. The company has all criteria needed in the company. But it is not mean that in this

company don’t have any lacking. They have a lot to do and work hard to make their vision and

mission come true.

In this company was separated with two levels that are staffs and the drivers. Because

of they not work in the same level, the relationship between them is so poor. In my opinion, I

think this company must do a social activity for example family day or annual dinner for both

level. It can help to make the relationship between them become positive and well.

To success in this industry, they must to cooperate with others. They must have a good

relationship with workers and also suppliers. Because of that, the first thing the company must to

do is to cure the relationship between them.

Besides that, they have to work hard to get many dealers. They must get as much they

can do because it can make this company to success. Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sendirian

Berhad must keep up the good work in giving the services to the clients or dealers. If the clients

or dealer complaint about the petrol or diesel are sent to them not enough as they had ordered

and paid, we should refund them same as if crossover. So it will increase the cost of company.

The company doesn’t have any website. In the world of technology, all these

communications are very important to promote company to peoples and worldwide. For me, it is

very sad because they not use a technology as a tool to make the company well known to the

world. When I want to make this report, I don’t have any information from the internet and

website as my reference. So, I use the manual methods; open the files and books to search any

information that can help me do my practical report.

My suggestion is, KLSSB must make an email and website to introduce their company

in this country and also overseas. Using the technology, they can introduce the company

worldwide, and people can get to know about their corporate profile, the projects that they have

involved, contact information and so on.

It is normal to face with problem everywhere we are and at any time. Along my

internship at KLSSB, I have faced with a variety kinds of problems. For instance, the drivers in

this company majority come from Kelantan and Terengganu.

So, this is one of the problems I have encounter everyday when the situations that I have

to communicate with them and get instruction from my boss to told them about something. This

is because I not fully understand the Kelantan Language, but a few for Terengganu Language.

Sometime I will be confused whether to advise them or not because they are older than me.

However, everyday life teaches me to understand other people and patience is very

important thing in our life. I try to solve this situation start from myself which I have to adapt

their own culture and try to understand what they are talking and communicating. This is a true

life which I will encounter with people that have various culture, attitude and behavior in real

working life.

Lastly, in my humble opinion, Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sendirian Berhad must have

a very good system in taking the practical student. Before they take the practical students, they

must know the student’s specializations and what course do the student take. They must have a

job description. They need to prepare a job for the practical students and try to give a challenging

work based on what they studied. If they not arrange it in systematically, sometimes students

don’t have any work to do and it a waste to come to the industrial training.

6.0 BENEFITS OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

All students have to go for industrial training because it is compulsory to all students.

From this program, students can get the benefits and experience. It will give the big impact to all

students in order to be more mature, confidence, able to compete with others during their domain

of works.

All techniques and scope of works that we have learned during the industrial training

can be use in the teaching program because not all experience that we get has in the subject that

we learned in university. It is fun when we shared the experienced that we get from this

industrial training and change ideas with others.

This has allowed us to grow and develop applications in keeping with the latest trends.

Other than that, with this program students can be freedom to think rationally and not only

depends on notes get from the lecturers. We also can be independence without instruction from

lecturer or tutor.

Furthermore, students can take away great contacts, both personally and

professionally. They can make great friends with these 6 months program. It can be use as a

guideline to communicate and mingles with peoples.

Students also can get benefit that is some companies could pass up the opportunity to

tap the talents of the young ones and learn together. In fact, in this win-win situation helps the

country in building its human capital.

7.0 CONCLUSION

As for the conclusion, for me an industrial training is an important thing for students to

be done because it has an essential element for ourselves to be prepared to face real working life

which maybe more challenging in the future. This industrial training course is able to give us

experience and have important effect to us. Through this course, we do not only know our own

self but it is important to know others too because we do not live alone but in everyday life, we

encounter, communicate interact with many kinds of people.

The 24 weeks placement also has provided me the opportunities to develop and improve

my soft skill and also my functional skill. The soft skills such as communication and navigation

are sure to prove useful for my career path in the future

In terms of work, through industrial training, as a student I have learnt how the working

lives are. I find that working life need patience, sacrifice, effort, responsibility, loyalty and of

course honesty. I know something about outside people and internal staffs and challenging in

business which sometimes I never know before. So, industrial training is a good experience I

have in addition to my advantageous in getting much knowledge in education.

I do not only learn some skills during the internship but also developed some positive

improvement on self-development. I am able to work lively under harsh environment. At the

same time, I also try to correct some of the weakness such as lack of initiative on working, or

time management.

All of this valuable experience and knowledge that I have gained were not only

acquired through the direct involvement in the various tasks given but also through other aspect

of training such as work observation, interaction with colleagues, superior and other third party

related to the company. I really feel that the primary objective for undergoing an internship

program have successfully achieved. After working in Konsortium Lord Saberkat Sendirian

Berhad, it really builds up my confidence to face the real working world later after my

graduation.

I recommend to all students that to use your opportunity and time well in undergoing

industrial training in order to get better knowledge, experience and understanding of real

working life. In addition to our higher education level that can give better life for us, as a student

we need other strength in preparation to face future life. Internal and external strength can be

built through the industrial training course in order to achieve excellence in our life.
