COMPANY PROFILE
CUMI was founded in 1954 as a tripartite collaboration between the Murugappa Group, The
Carborundum Co., USA and the Universal Grinding Wheel Co. Ltd., U.K.
The company pioneered the manufacture of Coated Abrasives and Bonded Abrasives in India
in addition to the manufacture of Super Refractories, Electro Minerals, Industrial Ceramics and
Ceramic Fibres. Today the company's range of over 20,000 different varieties of
abrasives, refractory products and electro-minerals are manufactured in ten locations across
various parts of the country.
With state-of-the art facilities and strategic alliances with global partners, CUMI has achieved a
reputation for quality and innovation. CUMI is one of the five manufacturers in the world with
fully integrated operations that include mining, fusioning, wind and hydro power stations,
manufacturing, marketing and distribution.
Almost all of CUMI's ten manufacturing facilities have received the ISO 9001:2008 accreditation
for quality standards. A well connected marketing and distribution network of offices and
warehouses in India and abroad, ensure that service to customers is given prime importance.
CUMI's constant innovation and product upgradation, through in-house R&D and strategic
alliances with global leaders in grinding technology, have not only ensured it market leadership
in India and abroad, but also international recognition as a manufacturer of quality abrasives
and a provider of total grinding solutions.
CUMI's products are being exported to 43 countries spread across North America, Europe,
Australia, South Africa and Asia.
Industrial visit to CUMI
Date: March 9, 2018 ( Friday)

Started from the campus at 12.30 noon by 2 bus.
Refreshment time at Hosur.
Reached CUMI plant at 3 p.m.
The interaction started with the CUMI officials introducing themselves and giving a brief about
the organization.
Students were grouped with around 25 in number in each and entered the plant with one
CUMI guide and one faculty from the college side.
Photos were strictly prohibited inside the plant.
Visited 2 sections of the plant and the guide explained about the machinery and processes of
each stage.
1) Abrasive wheels with high temperature baking.
Started with the ingredients of wheel , mixing , pressing to green shape and high temperature
baking to convert it to a hard and strong grinding wheel of different sizes. Both Alumina and
Silicon Carbide grinding wheels are produced. Watched the finishing of the wheel, stenciling
and packing.
2) Bonded abrasive wheel
In this section, abrasive grains are coated on a thin disc and bonded together using resins. The
room is kept at around 200C to control the curing of resin.
Reunion after the plant visit for interaction.
The students expressed their gratitude for giving an opportunity to visit the plant and learn
many things from the officials of the plant.
Dr. Parvati recollected her long term relationship with Carborundum and expressed her sincere
gratitude to the officials for finding time for the students from their busy schedule.

Visit is over and this is the time to go back to the campus
Outcome of the visit
This was the first industrial visit of the 4 th semester students and they participated with a lots
of curiosity and enthusiasm.
