Such a complicated situation for everyone, as the one experienced this year 2020, has been a challenge both for companies in the marine and food sector, in order to maintain their activity, and for ANFACO-CECOPESCA, in order to provide a scientific-technological support to such a relevant challenge for the industry. Due to years of investment and effort, the companies in the

marine and food sector have based their competitiveness in international markets on quality, technology and innovation, complying with the highest standards of quality and food safety, sustainability and traceability. In this way, their resilience capacity is optimal to deal with these situations. It is a pride to appreciate how both the business companies and ANFACO-CECOPESCA have even increased their results compared to the previous year, which is only possible thanks to the high levels of adaptability and commitment achieved.

For this reason, even more so in this complex year, the confidence shown by clients and associates of ANFACO-CECOPESCA in our services in this situation, guarantee the excellence of our capabilities and their perfect alignment with the needs of the business sector. Total income of € 7.65 M (+2.6%), of which € 6.2 M (81%) come from R & D & I activities and technological services, not counting on non-competitive grant, supports the great involvement of the industrial sector in the activities of ANFACO-CECOPESCA. This challenge could not be tackled successfully without an excellent technical team, with 20% PhDs, and excellent technological infrastructures, with a total investment of more than € 22M;

Therefore, we can only congratulate on the strength of the sea-industry sector, as well as the technological response capacity of ANFACO-CECOPESCA, which undoubtedly, according to the data in this report, is consolidated as a reference center for the Marine and Food sectors.

In 116 years of history, the marine sector or society in general has probably not faced a challenge as difficult as the one experienced this year due to the situation caused by COVID-19. The data reflected in this 2020 activity report indicate the enormous confidence of our 246 associates and 530 clients in the support that our services provide for their industrial activity, consolidating

ANFACO-CECOPESCA as a leading technological center at Spanish level for the marine and food sector.

Aligned with the sector’s firm commitment to technology as a guarantee of competitiveness in international markets, ANFACO-CECOPESCA continues for another year to be the main promoter of the development and implementation of high-value technological solutions for the food industry, promoting the effective transfer of solutions based on blue biotechnology and Industry 4.0 as the main lines of action, with sustainability, healthy food, aquaculture and the massive digitization of processes being the main lines of action. Thus, at analytical technology level, there are about 180 procedures accredited by ENAC, managing approximately 35,000 samples and increasing its activity significantly, with an increase of more than 10% in turnover. The Technical Assistance and International Cooperation Area has resolved 2,244 technical queries and carried out 61 training actions both at the national and international level, carrying out 177 cooperation activities in more than 40 countries in the last 22 years. In relation to the R&D&i Area, 89 projects have been carried out in 2020, of which 62% have been carried out under contract, 24% of which are international.

We have a transcendent challenge ahead of us, to continue being the benchmark technological arm for the sector, reinventing ourselves, providing companies with new solutions adapted to these changes and constantly updating our portfolio of services to, together, overcome this situation thanks to the technology and knowledge.

ANALYTICAL TECHNOLOGY AREA

35,000 samples

346 laboratory clients

More than 142,000 analyses performed

Annual increase of more than 10% in turnover

More than 400 determinations offered and 175 ENAC accredited procedures

More tan 87% of results reports covered by the scope of accreditation

The service provided by the Analytical Technology Area, through its several analysis units, is characterized by its high scien-tific and technical level, always maintaining the quality and speed standards required by our clients and associates. The analytical services offered are under constant review, which makes us a reference in physicochemical, microbiological, sen-sory, toxicological and biomolecular tests on agri-food products, water and packaging, anticipating the demands of the in-dustry.

In line with our firm commitment to continuous improvement of the management system and the services provided to our clients and associates, during 2020 we have expanded the UNE-EN ISO / IEC 17025 (nº96 / LE230) accreditation with new test procedures. It can be remarked the following: the quantification of metallic pollutants, micronutrients and macronutrients by ICP-MS in Food, feed and its raw materials, (Analysis of Selenium, Chromium, Tin, Sodium, Phosphorus and Potassium). It is also important to mention the determination of sugars by volumetry (Lane and Eynon method) for food, except meats and meat derivatives, and by the Luff-Schoorl method for these last two matrices. The detection of Vibriovulníficus in the food matrix has also been proven.

It should also be noted that ANFACO-CECOPESCA, specifically, its analytical services, are recognized with three of the im-portant accreditation programs for the agri-food sector: “Tests for mandatory nutritional information according to EC Regu-lation No. 1169/2011, in food”, “Gluten and Allergen Trials in Foods” and “Food Microbiology Trials”. Recognition with these ENAC accreditation programs means that the laboratory is qualified to carry out all the tests required to achieve a specific purpose, offering a comprehensive service in aspects so important to guarantee the health of the consumers.

At the international level, the laboratory participates in the working group of the EuropeanNetworkofFoodAllergenDe-tection Laboratories of the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission, reinforcing its international pres-tige with the recognition of the AOAC as an independent laboratory to participate in the evaluation of the analytical
