Gruppo Sacmi, tecnologie all’avanguardia per l’industria
The Sacmi Group, cutting-edge technology for industry

è oggi leader mondiale nell’impiantistica industriale.
a superare i confini nazionali, non solo grazie all’export,
Eighty-seven years of historyThe Società Anonima Cooperativa Meccanici Imola
was founded in 1919 on the initiative of nine mechanics
and blacksmiths with a capital stock of 4,500 Italian liras.
Thanks to a steady growth rate characterised by
increas-ing internationalisation and continuous product
diversification, Sacmi is, today, the world’s leading
industrial plant engineering firm.
With Italy hit by economic hardship and dictatorship,
the 1930s saw Sacmi encounter considerable difficulties.
Yet thanks to the determination of its members and
employees and despite the pressure put on
the cooperative by the regime, Sacmi nevertheless
succeeded in producing its very first own-brand product:
a machine designed to clean oranges.
In the post-war years Sacmi made a significant
contribution to the reconstruction of the nation’s
economy by producing the first machines for ceramic
manufacturers in the districts of Sassuolo and Romagna.
At the same time, the company also began making
machines for the manufacture of metal crown caps -
the first step in the Cooperative’s multi-business strategy.
The 1950s saw Sacmi begin exporting, initiating a steady
process of internationalisation that would later produce
a network of controlled and subsidiary companies.

mondiali, sinergie tecnologiche e integrazioni operative
sfruttate con estrema flessibilità in settori differenti:
sono questi gli elementi che hanno permesso
al Gruppo Sacmi di raggiungere e mantenere
la leadership internazionale nell’impiantistica industriale
in settori chiave dell’economia.
business. Oggi sono quattro le divisioni operative che
raggruppano in efficienti strutture aziende specializzate
e tecnologie all’avanguardia:
• Ceramics
• Beverage & Packaging
• Food Processing & Inspection Systems
• Plastics
The Cooperative steadily expanded to become a key
industrial group and, from the late 1980s onwards,
also began playing a major plant engineering role
in the beverage & packaging, food processing
and plastics industries.
Eighty-seven years have passed since 1919: the efforts
of those nine pioneers have produced a firm that now
has over 3,700 employees and a net capital stock
of 510 million Euros.
Corporate strategy and multi-businessContinuous investment in top-level research
and cutting-edge technological innovation, the utmost
attentiveness to product and service quality, sensitivity
to the needs of world markets, technological synergy,
organisational integration and full flexibility: these, then,
are the factors that have allowed the Sacmi Group
to achieve and maintain international plant engineering
leadership status in key sectors of the world economy.
Over the years the core business of designing
and building machines and complete plants for
the ceramics industry - an area in which Sacmi is
the undisputed world leader - has been flanked
by other businesses to form an efficient organisation
that unites companies and technologies in the following
divisions:
• Ceramics
• Beverage & Packaging
• Food Processing & Inspection Systems
• Plastics

del Gruppo conoscenze all’avanguardia
The Sacmi Research and Development CentreInnovation and know-how are Sacmi’s most important
resources: they have made Sacmi a solid reference
point for the industries and markets where it operates.
The Group invests heavily in research and development
so as to put forward new technological applications
and improve and perfect its machines.
In 2006 alone the Sacmi Group channelled over
12 million Euros into R&D: a constant commitment
designed to expand the know-how that has made Sacmi
an international leader in industrial technology.
The Imola-based Research and Development Centre -
at the heart of Europe’s prime meccatronics district -
consists of a network of chemistry-physics laboratories
and experimental departments to test prototypes
and pilot plants for ceramics and packaging.
With a total floor space of 9600 m2 its 160-strong team
of researchers and technicians develops cutting-edge
technology for the ceramics, packaging
and process control industries and places them
at the service of the Group.
The Centre - registered on the national list
of research laboratories drawn up by the Ministry
of Universities and Scientific Research - is flanked
by other technological labs and R&D centres belonging
to individual Group companies.

tripartizione: identità, valore aggiunto e relazione sociale.
suddivisi in attività sociali, erogazioni liberali, contributi
Social responsibilityFor Sacmi “social responsibility” means doing business
in a way that enhances the quality of life of its members
and employees, maximises employees’ skills,
ensures workplace safety, promotes sustainable
development, safeguards the environment and provides
tangible support to communities.
Thanks to its values of solidarity, cooperation, observance
of the individual’s rights and a deep-rooted commitment
to the community in which it was founded, Sacmi has
become an industrial Group of world-level importance.
These values have given rise to a unique entrepreneurial
model - characterised by solid relations between
management, members and workers - capable
of generating and redistributing wealth in favour
of partners, customers, suppliers and employees.
Once again, in 2006 Sacmi set out to illustrate its social
responsibilities in the Cooperative’s Social Audit:
this document is drawn up in compliance with the 3-part
accounting principles of GBS-Gruppo Bilancio Sociale
that subdivide the audit into corporate identity,
added value and company profile.
In particular, Sacmi has adopted an environment
quality system in compliance with ISO 14001,
which complements the VISION 2000 quality management
system and OHSAS 18001 worker safety system.
Company environmental policy aims to ensure, among
other things, proper recycling and disposal of waste,
emissions control and water purification.
Over the last three years Sacmi has channelled
approximately 2 million Euros into community support
projects; this expenditure took the form of social
activities, donations, contributions to social security
organisations and the promotion of cultural events.

complessiva attesa in fase di budget;

World markets were inevitably influenced in 2006
by the appreciation of raw materials, especially steel,
spiralling oil costs and a Euro that continued to remain
strong against other major currencies.
The combination of these factors led to a drop
in the overall profitability predicted at the budget stage;
downward price pressure exerted by emerging countries
prevented full recovery of these costs.
Nevertheless, thanks to product diversification
and the internationalization of sales, the Sacmi Group
succeeded in maintaining its market shares.

impegnandosi in numerose attività solidaristiche.
Sacmi si è inoltre impegnata in numerosi progetti
organizzati dalla cooperazione nazionale ed internazionale
finalizzati alla diffusione e crescita
del modello cooperativo.

The year 2006 saw changes to cooperative company law
introduced; consequently, modifications to Sacmi’s own
articles of association were also made.
In keeping with its nature as a cooperative,
Sacmi launched several initiatives aimed at enhancing
pension security and improving health and safety
in the workplace, yet was also attentive in extending
its support to the wider community through involvement
in numerous social programs.
Sacmi is also involved in numerous projects organised
by the national and international cooperative movements
that aim to promote the diffusion and growth
of the cooperative model.

Ceramics Division>>
in percentuale sui volumi ipotizzati.
La recessione del mercato internazionale, sensibile
nel primo semestre, in attenuazione nell’ultima parte

forno bicanale progettato sempre in collaborazione
impatto estetico, offre importanti soluzioni
Industry overview and division performanceRight from the start 2006 showed itself
to be a difficult year, especially when compared
with the outstanding growth achieved in 2005.
At the time of drawing up the annual budget, in fact,
the portfolio, as a percentage of anticipated volumes,
appeared to be at its lowest-ever ebb.
The international market recession, considerable
in the first half-year yet lessening in the second,
created excessive competition between key market
players to the detriment of profitability.
Despite the seriousness of the general context,
the C&T division succeeded in defending its volumes
and consequently maintained consistent market shares.
Summing up, the year saw a considerable reduction
in investment in Iran, which has, for years, been Sacmi’s
main export country; this was partly offset by growth
in the Middle East and the continuing loyalty of Sacmi’s
Italian and Spanish customers.
Sacmi’s position as the leading technological innovator
in both machines and production processes was further
reinforced.

e all’eccellente spirito di collaborazione mostrato
dai nostri tecnici e dai colleghi della Laeis.
Over 2006 Sacmi’s high tonnage press range, named
POWER and renowned all over the world for its excellent
construction and performance, was upgraded:
improvements were made to hydraulics, tonnage
and even styling - all as part of an ongoing quest for
enhanced performance and higher customer satisfaction.
Designed by the renowned Isao Hosoe, the new
IMOLA SERIES made its debut at Tecnargilla in Rimini,
where it was inserted on a fully functioning CONTINUA line.
The resulting stream of visitors to the Sacmi stand during
Tecnargilla 2006 speaks for itself.
New developments in the drying and firing fields also
received a positive market response, with the first of the
new twin-channel kilns, again designed by industrial
engineer Isao Hosoe, being purchased: this machine,
which has extensive technical and ergonomic features
and great styling, offers considerable advantages
as regards the highly topical matter of energy savings.
20
During the year another plant that uses the CONTINUA
process was started up and agreements for the supply
of this new technology were signed with two other Italian
companies.
Spring 2006 saw the creation of the “Special Pressings”
Business Unit”, which aims to extend the application
of hydraulic pressing to new market segments beyond
the traditional ones of refractories and aluminium.
The metal sheeting industry appears to offer good
prospects, with a PHP3590 already being installed in Italy
to produce heat exchanger panelling; the purchase
of a second press is currently in progress.
The year 2006 also saw reinforcement of the sales
coordination strategy that governs the Sacmi and Laeis
brands, a strategy that let the subsidiary achieve
excellent margins.
Moreover, centralisation of production has brought
the construction and assembly of the 2000-ton Laeis
presses to Imola.
Thanks to a positive working atmosphere and smooth
teamwork between Sacmi and Laeis technicians
the results have so far been excellent.
As regards refractories, in 2006 the bulk of resources
was directed at the completion of prototypes of the new
PHR2006 press, jointly developed with Laeis.
21
chiavi in mano), quella Russa e l’Est Europa.
The machine was presented at Tecnargilla; while
the latter is not the ideal showcase for a machine aimed
at the refractory market, it nevertheless received
a positive welcome from customers.
In 2006 Sacmi Whiteware continued to strengthen its main
business areas: sanitaryware, tableware and heavy clay.
Ceramitec and Tecnargilla proved to be the key events
of the year, with much of the work being focussed
on the need to finalise the projects to be exhibited and
manage the sales opportunities generated by the events.
Ceramitec was chosen as the showcase for tableware-
related products and proved to be the ideal venue to exhibit
a fully automated plate production line featuring everything
from a new double opposed-piston press to tool-equipped
finishing carousels, anthropomorphous robot piece
handling, automatic car loading and LGV piece transfer.
Sama succeeded in reinforcing its position as industry
leader, using that status to achieve brilliant results in terms
of both volumes and margin despite the sluggishness
currently affecting tableware producers as a result
of Asian competition.
In keeping with corporate expansion policy a decision
to construct a new office building next to the production
plant was taken, the aim being to centralise all activities
and so reap the benefits of smoother, tighter integration.
22
coinvolte nel tema: Team (Technology and Experience
for Advanced Materials).
Developments in the tableware sector include the launch
of two important research projects: one dedicated
to digital decoration - both wet and dry - and the other
to the redesign of the PHO600 horizontal plate press so as
to renew its structurally and boost performance.
The fastest-expanding sales markets are Iran
(a long-standing purchaser of large scale turnkey plants),
Russia and the rest of Eastern Europe.
Sama also produces plants for the forming and glazing
of insulators and technical ceramic forming systems
that employ extrusion or tape-casting techniques.
In order to develop a new business area for
the manufacture of technical ceramic production plants
greater integration of Sama, Riedhammer, Laeis
and Sacmi Imola has been implemented, the aim being
to offer customers solutions that draw on the extensive
experience of these companies in casting, extrusion
and pressing, sintering and advanced ceramic research.
To promote this new business area a new brand
symbolizing the synergy and skills of the various
Sacmi Group companies was created: Team (Technology
and Experience for Advanced Materials).
During the second key fair of 2006, Tecnargilla, Sacmi

innovazioni, volte a sostituire l’attività umana
in tridimensionale verificando tempi e traiettorie.
Whiteware stood out on account of numerous
new products.
The most significant was a machine for the high pressure
casting of one-piece WC bowls.
Known as AOM, it stems from Sacmi’s many years’
experience in resin mould casting: it can produce both
the simplest pieces and those that (on account of their
bulk and complex geometry) seem almost impossible,
such as one-piece bowls.
Robotised de-moulding and an automated finishing island
complete the AOM production process.
It is here that the most important innovations are focussed:
human resources are replaced by anthropomorphous
robots with precision-designed grips and tools.
Each stage of the automatic sanitaryware production
process is tested using 3-D simulation software
to verify times and trajectories.
New projects aimed at expanding the range
of single-mould machines - and so provide more
streamlined, more flexible processes - were also launched.
These “casting islands” are the result of effective
teamwork between designers and technicians from Sacmi
and personnel from Gaiotto, a Whiteware company
24
tramite mulini discontinui a riempimento e svuotamento
automatizzati: HIMTM.
dedicated to the development of automated processes
for piece handling, glazing-painting and the forming
of acrylic pieces.
In this regard the automatic bathtub production plant
installed at Sphinx (a Ceramic Industries company)
in South Africa deserves a special mention.
Here, a new system - HIMTM - that enhances grinding
efficiency with discontinuous, automated filling/emptying
mills has been employed.
A sanitaryware firing module belonging to the new range
of Riedhammer tunnel kilns was also exhibited
at Tecnargilla.
Following the complete renewal of both its tunnel
and shuttle kiln range, this German company suffered
a slight drop in volumes on account of the inevitable initial
market caution.
Corporate reorganisation has continued, the strategy being
implemented at several levels:
25
commerciale sanitari NIV, Gaiotto
e Riedhammer sotto la direzione Sacmi Imola.
development of the technical and advanced ceramic kiln
business, development of the refractory kiln business,
reinforcement of the carbon anode kiln segment through
sales alliances (Outokumpu), greater emphasis
on the sale of spare parts and containment of fixed costs
(general expenditure and labour costs).
On the new projects front we wish to highlight
the development of a kiln with high-precision temperature
and oxygen content control, specifically designed
to fire ceramic gas filters for car exhausts, and the renewal
of the tableware kiln range.
To round off our analysis of the sanitaryware business
we wish to highlight a key project that was completed
at Caroma, in Australia: this is a turnkey high pressure
sanitaryware casting plant valued at around
10 million Euros.
Another key sales area is India, where the start-up of the
first complete plant and the diffusion of robotized glazing
and pressure casting demonstrate a clear appreciation
of Sacmi technology that augurs wells for the future.
At organisational level it was decided to unite the NIV,
Gaiotto and Riedhammer sanitaryware sales organisation
under the roof of Sacmi Imola management.
This will enhance the efficiency of company processes
and simplify customer relations as they can now refer
to a single interlocutor representing all Group companies.
Needless to say, company-specific specialisations
and skills remain firmly in place.
26
27
In the heavy clay production area much work has been
done on a new-concept kiln featuring prefabricated
pressurised modules, designed to reduce consumption
by preventing the entry of cold air.
Then first module was displayed at Tecnargilla.
An important new order was also placed:
a turnkey plant designed to produce 1300/1400 tons
of hollow bricks per day.
This plant completes the already wide range of solutions
offered to the market, which spans from roof tile
production plants (both re-pressing and semi-dry pressing)
to extrusion and firing lines for ventilated facades
and plants for the production of face bricks.
Efforts also focussed on energy efficiency (in all Whiteware
business areas) so as to limit consumption of both
individual machines and complete plants.
Practical examples of this are seen in the design
and sale of systems that recover heat from fumes exiting
the kiln stack and use it to pre-heat both combustion air
and drying air.
Moreover, ways of using the scrap and ash produced
by waste disposal are being developed via the design
of plants that render them inert and thus make
then suitable as raw materials in brick manufacturing.

Beverage & Packaging Division>>
Industry overview and division performanceIn 2006 the Sacmi Group’s Beverage and Packaging
division saw continued reinforcement of last year’s
positive trends, with achieved volumes generating
considerable satisfaction.
The underlying strength of Beverage & Packaging
continued to be technological innovation.
30
dove solo innovazioni rivoluzionarie possono fare breccia.

Closures & PETWith regard to closure machines, 2006 proved to be
a positive year on account of two concurrent factors:
the recovery of the Chinese market and the substantial
growth of the rest of the world’s economy.
Sales of machines and complete plants for the production
of plastic beverage caps hit record levels.
Renewal of the product range and reinforcement
of the sales and after-sales networks generated clear-cut
results in the form of record orders for this division.
In the PET sector Sacmi continues it commitment on two
fronts: in the development of injection systems that offer
a more competitive alternative to those provided
by the current market leaders and in the development
of compression technology that can bring radical,
far-reaching innovation into the industry.
31
acque minerali, succhi, vino e olii alimentari, oltre a linee
Research and development of new solutions
and innovative container-making machines has, in fact,
continued apace.
A widening of the range, while theoretically quite natural,
in practice will clash with very mature, competitive
markets where only technical breakthroughs can make
the difference.
In addition to continuing development of the PAM
(Preform Advanced Moulding) machine, the market launch
of which is pending, much progress towards finalization
of the CBF (Compression Blow Forming) machine
has also been made: this is designed to make plastic
containers using a compression and continuous rotary
stretching-blowing process.
The proportion of closure-making machine sales
accounted for by the plastic cap market is increasing
continuously.
While the global market for metal cap-making machines,
in which Sacmi is world leader, is gradually shrinking,
the consumption trend for plastic containers is decidedly
upward.
Today, compression is the world’s most widely used
technology for the manufacture of plastic screw beverage
caps and Sacmi continues to obtain significant market
shares.
BeverageDuring 2006 the Beverage division focused its efforts
on the sale of complete blowing, filling, labeling
and packaging lines for both glass and plastic PET bottles
for soft drinks, mineral waters, fruit juices, wine
and food oils, plus Form-Fill-Seal lines for the milk
and yogurt industries.
Consolidated business volumes passed from
69.571 million Euros in 2005 to 77.438 in 2006,

costruzioni chiuse, protette e altamente igieniche
largely as a result of reinforcing the sales network,
which currently covers all key geographical areas.
A further sales increase of 30% is forecast for 2007.
Labeling products performed according to expectations,
with volumes increasing by 35%, making Sacmi Labelling
the leading producer of roll-fed machines.
Sacmi Labelling also stood out on account of product
innovation: for example, the introduction of brushless
drive systems now allows output rates of over 20 bottles
per second to be achieved.
The year 2006 also saw Pressure Sensitive labeling
machines generate excellent results (these apply
self-adhesive labels on both glass and PET bottles
and are particularly suitable for the beer industry).
At the 2006 edition of the Paris-held “Salon
de l’Emballage” Sacmi presented the very first
laser-sealing labeling machine, a roll-fed unit that applies
sleeve labels at a rate of 48,000 bottles/hour.
Similarly, Sacmi Filling delivered its first new-generation
machines, which feature mass measurement, structures
that are closed, protected and highly hygienic,
with blower and compensator between filler and labeler.
The new compact Sinergy line was also on show
at the “Salon de l’Emballage”; it attracted a steady stream
of visitors and the first sales contracts, with delivery
scheduled for 2007, were signed.
33
sleeve termoretraibile particolarmente interessante
The Form-Fill-Seal lines made by Benco Pack
were also improved, with new container designs
for the dairy industry being offered.
Deserving of special mention is a particularly innovative,
compact 20,000 containers-per-hour yogurt line that
applies a shrink-wrap sleeve: the line has already aroused
significant market interest.
In March 2006 the packaging area saw the founding
of Sacmi Pakim, which, together with Sacmi Packaging,
entered the wine and food oil palletizing market.
The year 2006 also saw packaging lines enhanced
by the addition of laser-guided shuttles.

Industry overview and division performanceIn 2006 the initial effects of the modernization plan drawn
up by the Group - a plan designed to transform
the Negri Bossi Group from a simple producer of standard
machines for general use to a provider of complex
systems that meet the specific needs of individual
customers - began to take evident effect.
Despite a market that appeared to be in a slump
with respect to the figures of the preceding year,
Group companies succeeded in achieving an overall
volumes increase of over 20% (over 12%
for the Negri Bossi and BM Biraghi brands alone).
In 2006 the Negri Bossi Group, Italy’s leading designer
and marketer of plastic injection moulding machines,
quoted on the STAR segment of the Italian Stock
Exchange, continued to be right on the cutting edge
of injection press development, an area that constitutes
the cornerstone of the complete systems started up
on customers’ premises.

del Gruppo, superando ormai la quota del 60%;
dell’Europa Occidentale.
In collaborazione con Gaiotto Automation,
società del Gruppo Sacmi specializzata
nella progettazione e realizzazione di impianti
di verniciatura e di automazione industriale,

Negri Bossi focussed on further development of its latest
generation of “all electric” presses from the CANBEL
range and proceeded with implementation
of the new Bi-Power series (split-level injection presses),
now a growing company business area.
In keeping with industrial development plans, 2006 saw
the percentage of Group sales accounted for by exports
increase to beyond 60%; the fastest growing markets are
those of North and South America and the already-solid
markets of Western Europe.
Together with Gaiotto Automation, a Sacmi Group
company specialising in the design and construction
of industrial painting and automation systems, Negri Bossi
delivered and started up new automated islands in which
the injection press is assisted by anthropomorphous
robots - thus making the company a supplier
of truly comprehensive production systems.

Genova e Bologna - 3 uffici e 2 società estere.
Industry overview and division performanceThe 2006 financial year of the Service division was
characterized by an enhanced level of services
and improved results.
Group policy remains that of centralizing, through
this company, the supply of services, the aim being
to improve their efficacy and lower relative costs.
Overall sales volumes, 57 million Euros, were in line
with budget targets.
Division Ebit grew considerably with respect to both
the budget (+62%) and the previous financial year (+82%),
largely as a consequence of cost reduction.
As predicted by budget forecasts, Italiansped, supplier
of international shipment and logistics services, generated
smaller volumes than in 2005 (34.5 million Euros in 2006)
while successfully reducing the cost of services supplied
through the reorganization of the shipping and logistics
divisions. Despite the drop in volumes, Ebit rose by 40%
with respect to 2005.
The company employs 54 people in its four Italian
branches (Imola, Milan, Genoa and Bologna), 3 offices
and 2 foreign branches.

Some 45% of the company’s services are supplied
to the Group itself and the rest 55% to the open market.
Protesa, a specialist company providing technological
support to the Group’s mechanical workshops, continued
developing services for both the captive market - mainly
aimed at the parent company - and the extra-Group market.
Sales grew by approximately 18% while Ebit,
driven by volume increases, improved by about 40%.
Within the services division a key role is played
by Prototipo on account of both its strategic function
as an information and network integrator and the results
achieved.
Throughout 2006 the company contributed
to the in-Group diffusion and implementation
of pre-customized IT models (Mosaico), thus laying
the infrastructural basis for the integration of information.

realizzando economie importanti attraverso l’investimento
I positivi risultati economici raggiunti, congiuntamente
all’efficacia ed all’efficienza dei processi,
In terms of economic results 2006 yielded higher volumes
than 2005, with sales of some 20 million Euros being
achieved; furthermore, enhanced company efficiency
increased Ebit by 120%.
These outstanding results are largely the result
of rationalization of the organizational processes
that are typical of this ‘strengthening’ stage.
Prototipo continued its policy of expanding the non-Group
customer pool into areas where it has historically
had experience (such as public administration, health,
fashion, the tertiary sector and catering ) so as to diversify
its activities.
Finally, 2006 was the first complete financial year
for S.in.e.r.g.i.a., a year that saw it complete
the reorganization of its customer companies’
administrative processes and bring about significant
economies by investing in and developing the IT systems
that have considerably improved its efficiency.
These exceptional economic results, together with process
efficacy and efficiency, clearly demonstrate how
standardization and centralisation of services are
a prerequisite for the lowering of costs; as such they shall
become an integral part of strategy over the coming years.
S.in.e.r.g.i.a. shall, on account of the skills and experience
acquired, play a pivotal role in this strategy.
