IMHOCanada:TorontoFundraiserReportAsthesituationinwar‐tornNortheastSriLankacontinuestodeteriorate,reportsfromthegroundrevealthealarmingextentofthehumanitariancrisisfacinghundredsofthousandscaughtintheconflictzonesandintheIDP(InternallyDisplacedPersons)camps.Inadditiontothedeathsandinjuriesfromthefightingandagenerallackofadequatemedical&healthcareandotherbasicsupplies,thethreatofseveremalnutritionandstarvationremainseriousconcerns.Childrenandtheelderlyareparticularlyatrisk.Therehasbeenheavyfightinginandaroundmanyareaswheretherearehospitals,addingfurtherstresstothosedoctorsandhealthcareproviderstryingdesperatelytoservethosewithurgenthealthandmedicalneeds.Thesehospitalsarenowoperatingfarbeyondtheircapacities,especiallyasthosecivilianscaughtintheconflictzoneshavefloodedoutinthepastseveraldays.OnApril11,2009theIMHOCanadateam,alongwithmanyvolunteersandwell‐wishers,raisedanimpressive$75,000fortheemergencyreliefeffortthroughatelethon/radiothonthattookplaceattheAtlantaPartyHallinScarborough,Toronto.TheeventwasbroughttothepublicbyanumberofCanadiantelevisionandradiomedia,includingCMR,CTR,andTVI.Variousspeakerstouchedonthecurrentcrisisandthemassivehumanitarianneedsnowplaguingthoseaffected.Specialthankstoallwhodonatedtothisinitiativeinsuchatimelymannerandtoallwhomadethiseventareality!Followingthisfundraiser,thesecondshipmentoflife‐savingmilkpowderandothernutritionwassentfromIMHOthroughourlocalpartnerorganization,theConsortiumofHumanitarianAgencies,tobenefitthosewithintheconflictzone.However,withanupsurgeinviolencethatday,theshipmentofmilkpowderandvegetableswasre‐routedtoJaffnatobenefittheIDPsthere.Thismuchneededmilkpowder/nutritionhelpedtobothsavelivesandbenefittheoverallhealthofthoseaffected.Thisshipmentwasvaluedat$75,000intotal,$25,000ofwhichwascontributedbyIMHO.Intotal,IMHOhasgiven$265,000tothisemergencyreliefeffortandisplanningtocommitmuchmoreinthemonthstocome.Towardsthisend,IMHOCanadahascontributed$75,000!Ourfundshavebeenspentinthefollowingways:

1.$225,000foramyriadofreliefeffortsfromFebruarythruApril20092.$25,000for2ndinstallmentofmilkpowder/nutrition3.$5,000tohelpsettingupatemporarywardtoservepregnantmothersandchildreninIDPcampsinthesouthernpartoftheJaffnapeninsula4.$10,000formedicationsforpatientsinIDPcampsinJaffna5.NowlookingintosupportingmoremobilemedicalclinicsinsidetheIDPcamps
