Putative transformantshave also been developed in fieldpea(var. HUDP15andIPF99-25)usingsevendsRNAgene.FourCMSbasedhybridsofshortdurationpigeonpea have been found promising. Over 3870 germplasm accessions of different pulsecropswereevaluatedandcharacterized.Underconservationagriculture, cropresiduemanagement, raisedbedplantingandzerotillageproved promising. Newstrainsof PGPR(PSB11, PS8) havebeen identified.1HNMR, FTIR and 13CNMR analysis of latex of calotropis indicated presence of polymer ofcarbamate containing isoprene unit. GBNV was identified as causal virus of leaf curl diseaseofmungbean. Presence ofchlorogenicacidinrootsof chickpeaandperoxidise (PO) andphenylalanime ammonia lyase (PAL) in pigeonpea showed positive correlation with toleranceto Fusariumwilt.Newmachines such asvertical thresher,pigeonpeastripperandsuctionwinnowerweredesignedandfabricatedforefficientpost-harvestmanagement.New research programmes on heat tolerance in chickpea, impact of climate change onpest and diseases scenario, molecular characterization and sequences diversity of tospovirus,scale-upproductionanddevelopmentofcost-effectiveformulationsofEPNbasedbiopesticidesandmarkerassistedbreedinginlentil,urdbean,chickpeaandpigeonpeahave been initiated. The Institute has developed an international project for SAARC countriesonShuttleBreedingofpulsesandisanimportantpartneringenerationchallengeprogrammeonchickpea.CollaborationswithCGinstituteslikeICARDAandICRISAThavebeenstrengthenedwhichhasfacilitatedspeedy flowofISNandexposurevisitandtraining of pulse scientists under NAAS.Under National Food Security Mission, IIPR has been identified as nodal institute forbreederseedproductionandcapacitybuilding.Inthisendeavour,theInstituteincollaborationwithAICRPcentresorganizedbreederseedproductionof284.8tonneofdifferentpulsecrops. Alargenumberoftrainingprogrammes forextensionpersonnelofNFSMstateswereorganized,besidesmodelnationaltrainingprogrammesandstatesponsoredtrainingprogrammes.Underfarmersparticipatoryprogramme,164.7tonnequality seeds ofchickpeaand pigeonpea were produced which will act asa catalyst forfastspreadofimprovedvarieties.TheInstitutecelebrateditsSilverJubileeon14thofFebruary2009andorganizedanInternationalGrainLegumesConferenceincollaborationwithISPRD.Onthisoccasion,theInstitutebroughtoutveryvaluablepublicationslikeMilestonesinFoodLegumesResearch,25 Yearsof Pulses Research at IIPR and Pulses in Cropping Systems. Six scientistswere deputed for training in the specialized fields in advanced laboratories in India as wellasabroad.Alargenumberoftechnicalandadministrativestaffwerealsodeputedfortraininginspecializedareas.Twentytwopostgraduatestudentswereimpartedshorttermtraining(8to 12weeks) in Biotechnology,Biochemistry andMicrobiology. The all round growth and development of the Institute has been possible with unstintedencouragement, supportandguidancereceivedfromDr.MangalaRai,Secretary,DAREand Director General, ICAR and Dr. P.L. Gautam/ Dr. S.P.Tiwari, Deputy Director General(Crop Science)whichI acknowledgewith gratitude. I am also thankful to Dr. V.D. Patil,Assistant Director General (Oilseeds and Pulses) for standing with Institute in its researchendeavour.I would like to place on record my appreciation to Drs. Shiv Kumar,C. Chattopadhyay,Mohan Singh, B.L. Kushwaha,S.K. Singh, R. Ahmad andPrasoon Verma for their sincereefforts in compiling the report of their respective divisions and sections.
