VISION

• To evolve into a centre of academic excellence, developing professionals in the field of electronics and instrumentation to excel in academia and industry.

• Facilitate comprehensive knowledge transfer with latest theoretical and practical concepts, developing good relationship with industrial, academic and research institutions thereby moulding competent professionals with social commitment.

Engineering Graduates will be able to:

PO1. Engineering Knowledge

• Apply an engineering specialization to the solution of knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and complex engineering problems.

To identify the gaps with the requirements of both industry and society, technical experts

drawn from industry are included in the Advisory Board of the department. Advisory

committee gives suggestions on the courses which need to be added to bridge the gap. For

the better attainment of PO’s, the Department Advisory Committee identifies the gaps in the

syllabus considering the flow of the subject with the syllabus and the recent trends in

technology.

Measures to bridge gaps in the syllabi of the courses include:

The topics to be covered beyond the syllabus are identified and faculty incharge of the

courses are requested to cover these topics in the class in the form of regular class,

assignments, simulation studies, short term courses in various labs and identifying add-

on programme for the courses.

Measures to bridge programme level gaps include:

1. Organizing industrial visit and industrial training to provide exposure to industrial

environment.

2. Conduct of short term courses/ invited talks to provide extra insight to prevailing industrial

scenario.

3. Alumni interaction with students.

ADD ON COURSES

In addition to courses prescribed in the syllabus, the department conducts add on courses

during holidays and semester breaks.

1. Course feedback

Feedback of students on the attainment of the predicted course outcomes is collected

at the end of the semester.

A sample of course feedback is shown in Annexure 5 listed in page 77.

2. Course Committee

This is for common courses (electives are excluded) offered to students admitted for

the B.Tech. programme irrespective of their branch of study. Each of such courses

will have a course committee constituted by the Principal of the college. The

chairman of the course committee is a senior faculty member not offering the course.

3. Class committee

Beginning from the third semester, all branches of study have class committees for

every semester constituted by the respective HoD.

A senior faculty member who does not offer any course during that semester is the

chairman of the committee.

Members:

i) All faculty members teaching courses in a class in that semester.

ii) Two student representatives nominated by the HoD.

The course committees and class committees meet at least thrice in a semester – the

first at the beginning of the semester, the second and the third after the first and the

second internal tests respectively. Both committees monitor the conduct of the courses,

adherence to the course plan and time schedule, completion of the syllabus, standards

of internal tests, evaluation process and difficulties faced by the students and take

suitable remedial actions at the appropriate time. At the end of the semester, the

committee should meet without student representatives to review the conduct of the

course and finalize the internal assessment marks and approve them.

• Questions with appropriate weightages are framed. to comment on strength and weakness of the faculties for further improvements

INDUSTRIAL COLLABORATION

Industrial visits and Industrial training are undertaken as a part of effective implementation

of the curriculum. Students are encouraged to take internship program during their semester

break. Faculty members give their guidelines, suggestions and contact details of an

internship. They also help the students by interacting with the industrial experts, provide the

students recommendation letters and other necessary supports.

To develop interest in becoming a part of core industry of instrumentation sector, we

promote the industry visits/internships in small groups. This is also to see that students gather

more information out of their curiosity which is possible in small groups. Faculties also

accompany the students during such occasion and get benefited.

INDUSTRIAL VISITS & INTERNSHIP

Students are expected to undertake industrial training(s) of total 10 days minimum

duration or industrial visits (to minimum 2 industries) for studying about the

industries of importance to the branch concerned during 4th to 7th semester. Students

may also undertake an educational tour, the tour period shall be considered as part of

the working periods of a semester. The tour maybe conducted during the

vacation/holidays taking not more than 3 working days, combined with the

vacation/holidays if required, between 5th and 8th semesters for visiting industries (at

least two) of importance to the branch concerned. Faculty members shall accompany

the students for the industrial visits/educational tour. Each student shall submit

detailed bound report(s) of the training/visit/tour to the Head of Department within

two weeks after the programme. These bound report(s), signed by the staff advisor or

faculty in charge of tour/training/visit and by the head of department, shall also be

brought during the final viva-voce. Finally, presentation to class about visit by

students to the whole class is performed.

PROFESSIONAL BODY MEMBERSHIPS

1. Instrumentation Society of India (ISOI):

The Kochi chapter of the Instrument Society of India (ISOI) was

formed including members from the industry and academia. It was

inaugurated on July 14th

2012. The objective is to bring together those

who practice instrumentation and process control on day to day basis

and also those teach the same topic also on a day to day basis, so that

it benefits both. The office of the Kochi chapter functions from the Department of Applied

Electronics & Instrumentation, Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology. The chapter

members include senior executives of major industries like FACT, HOCL, BPCL, TCC,

Cochin Shipyard and faculty of many academic institutions. The chapter meets regularly at

the Rajagiri campus to share their experiences and discuss issues relevant to instrumentation

and process control. The department faculties are members of ISOI. There is also student

chapter of ISOI. The faculty members and students therefore get a chance for participating in

the meetings and interacting with the industrial experts. The chapter also conducts seminar

competition for the final year students of Instrumentation with appropriate rewards.

BEST PRACTICES

Graduate Assistantship: M. Tech. graduates who wish to assist lab in UG programs

are selected based on an interview and are assigned with the relevant labs with

stipend.

Professional Association (ISOI) activities: Open interaction during the chapter

meeting with senior executives of major industries like FACT, HOCL, BPCL, TCC,

Cochin Shipyard, faculty of many academic institutions and students of RSET.

Annual student competitions and seminars jointly organized by department of AEI

are conducted regularly. Association chapter often conducts invited talks in the latest

trends in Industrial Automation.

Major and mini project EXPOs for students: All the projects done by students

were exhibited and evaluated appropriately by experts from academia/ industries and

feedbacks were given to them. This was a motivation for the students to showcase

their projects and its performance. This opportunity was also used to ignite the minds

of junior students.

Exhibition from industries: Major industries like HOCL, Graphene Automation

exhibited their instrument system for the benefit of all students in AEI department

and demonstrated its functioning.

Remedial classes/Mentoring system: Weak students are identified on their basis of

their class evaluations/tests and through proper mentoring process. The outcomes are

also achieved through peer mentoring, where a team is formed involving students of

higher capabilities.

Industrial visits by faculty members: To be aware of the practices in industry, we

often conduct Industrial visits to nearby industries during our semester break. This

will be an additional input to the faculty members to be delivered to the students for

their career development.

Industrial training for students: As part of curriculum students are expected to have

training in various industries relevant to instrumentation. Over and above certain

students do undertake industrial training whenever they come across opportunities

due to our interaction with industry experts/professional bodies

Industrial visits/internships for students in small groups: To develop interest in

becoming a part of core industry of instrumentation sector, we promote the industry

visits/internships in small groups. This is also to see that students gather more

information out of their curiosity which is possible in small groups. Faculties also

accompany the students during such occasion and get benefited.

Industry oriented projects: This is an opportunity to work in industrial atmosphere,

thereby have first-hand information about the activities in the industry too.

Research Groups and activities: We have three research groups mainly Process

control, Instrumentation Design & Development and Biomedical Instrumentation &

Signal Processing. Faculty members are part of each of these groups and they do have

discussion to bring out list of probable projects to be conducted by the students.

Students are assigned projects on this basis so that every member of a particular

group can guide the students. We have also interdisciplinary Research Areas

including Bio Instruments Research and Development Society (BIRDS) and Speech

& Accoustics, Image Processing. It is a forum for professionals in the fields of

2. Institutions can recommend one of four other Basic Engineering courses offered during

this semester for every branch. However, the basic course selected should exclude the one

corresponding to their branch of specialization, eg. Student who took introduction to Civil

Engineering should not take Basics of Civil Engineering; student who took Introduction to

Electrical Engineering should not take Basics of Electrical Engineering

3. The six basic engineering workshops will be connected with the Introductory or Basics of

Engineering courses offered. The students should attend two workshops In Semester 1 and

two in Semester 2.

For example, students opting Introduction to Civil Engineering or Basics of Civil

Engineering should attend the Civil engineering Workshop, students opting Introduction to

Mechanical engineering or Basics of Mechanical Engineering should attend the Mechanical

Engineering Workshop, students opting Introduction to Chemical Engineering should attend

the Chemical Engineering Workshop and students opting Introduction to Computing and

Problem Solving should attend the Computer Science Workshop etc. In addition, the students

should attend one more workshop course in Semester l, corresponding to the other Basic

Engineering course they had been assigned by the institution. The workshop courses

corresponding to both introductory and basic courses are same. However, the Institutions

may allot exercise or experiments listed in the syllabus based on the contents of

corresponding theory course.

4. Engineering Physics and Engineering Chemistry shall be offered in both semesters.

Institutions can advise students belonging to about 50% of the number of branches in the

institution to opt for Engineering Physics in S1 and Engineering Chemistry in S2 and vice

versa. Students opting for Engineering Physics in S1 should attend Engineering Physics lab n

SI and students opting for Engineering Chemistry S1 should opt for Engineering Chemistry

lab in S1.

5. Engineering Mechanics and Engineering Graphics shall be offered in both semesters.

Institutions can advise students belonging to about 50% of number of branches In the

institution to opt for Engineering Mechanics in Semester 1 and Engineering Graphics in

Semester 2 and vice versa.

6. It may be noted that for items 4 and 5 above, all students belonging to a particular branch

of study must be assigned the same course during one semester. For example, all students

belonging to Electrical and Electronics Engineering In an institution may be assigned

Engineering Physics and Engineering Physics lab, while all students In Electronics and

Communication Engineering branch may be assigned Engineering Chemistry and Chemistry

lab. Likewise, all students in Civil Engineering branch may be assigned Engineering

Graphics, while all students In Mechanical Engineering branch may be alerted the

Engineering Mechanics in Semester 1 and vice versa in Semester 2.

7. For Course U, the institution should conduct diagnostic tests to identify the training

requirements of each student and advise them to attend the suitable programme. The students

who excel in all diagnostic tests can be assigned Micro projects under the guidance of faculty

members. The classes for which BE 110 Engineering Graphics is offered under slot C may be

divided into two batches and these batches shall attend CAD Practice lab & language lab m

alternate weeks.

8. Course V is for earning activity points outside academic hours, the detail are covered in

rules and regulations of KTU.
