    Care and welfare of Persons with Disability Vikash has established its own strategy of community based rehabilitation for persons with disabilities. During this year following activities were undertaken by Vikash under Community Based Rehabilitation at various blocks of Puri, Khorda and Koraput districts of Odisha.

    Home Based Therapy services Qualified professionals and Multi-rehab workers provide therapy services to improve the wellbeing of the disabled at the beneficiary home. During the year 2014-15, home based therapy services were provided to 602 CWDs

    Centre based therapy services For persons having severe disabilities centre based therapy services were provided along with nursing care, free food and orientation for the guardian. During the year 2014-15, 98 Persons/Children with disabilities availed centre based therapy services. Vikash has started a permanent building for a therapy centre at Ganeswarpur.

    Need identification & distribution of Aids and appliances Vikash, in collaboration with ALIMCO had organized camp to identify the need of assistive devices for the persons with disabilities. Followed by needs assessment 146 aids & appliances were distributed to identified CWDs and PWDs

    Referral camps Referral services were provided to 54 CWDs to SCB Medical college & Hospital, SV Nirtar, ALIMCO, AYJNIHH, LV Prasad eye hospital, District Headquarter hospitals those are in need of specialized services like Assessment, Assistive Devices, surgery, Medicines etc. during the year 2014-15

    Medicine support Medicine support was provided directly to 43 CWDs and 10 CWDs were arranged medicines through Government hospitals during the year 2014-15; for those are in need of fits medicines on regular basis.

    Education support In its endeavor to promote education; tutorial and study material support is provided to 50 needy children with disabilities 96 children with disabilities were integrated to normal schools in the year 2014-15.

    Infrastructural development at schools To make the schools accessible for the disabled, Vikash had undertaken infrastructural development at 3 schools at Gop block of Puri district. Ramps were constructed at Mallagram & Khandasahi upper primary schools and toilet modification was undertaken at Tiruna primary schools.

    Modification of Aids and Appliances To increase the ease of disabled, Vikash had undertaken modification of aids and appliances. During the year 2014-15, 28 standing board modifications, 37 toilet modifications and 39 wheel chair modifications were done by Vikash.

    Advocacy for rights of disabled Vikash facilitated 15 PWD associations are conducting periodic meetings and discussing on leveraging Government benefits for the disabled. The table shows the Government benefits arranged for the CWDs and PWDs by the associations.

    Skill Development Training Skill development trainings were organized at Bhubaneswar of Khorda district and Pottangi of Koraput district for disabled youth on Computers, Soft Skills and Spoken English. During the year 2014-15, 73 disabled youth were provided training on building their skills and 12 youth secured employment with the facilitation of Vikash.

    Annual Sports Annual sports cum cultural events were organized at Vignan Ashram, Kundura of Puri district on 6th September 2014. CWDs participated in various sporting events and cultural programs which had an aim to encourage the disabled in physical activities.

    Exposure Visit An exposure cum educational visit was organized for 40 CWDs on 22nd February 2015 to Nandankanan Zoo at Bhubaneswar. The CWDs were impressed by the nature’s symphony and by the exquisite touch of the wilderness there.

    Rehabilitation of Mentally ill People with mental illness are one of the most neglected sections of the society. Vikash developed a community model where people with mental illness and are moving on the streets were given shelter and treatment. During the year 2014-15, Vikash had identified 750 PWMI at Puri district and arranged the following Government services.

    World Mental Health Day On 10th October 2014, Vikash in collaboration with Bhinnakshyam Mahasangh had observed the World Mental Health Day at Bhubaneswar. During this program the issues of mentally health were put forward with the appropriate authorities and dance therapy was given to the participants.

    Health

    Malaria eradication Vikash had organized 10 sensitization programs at various slums of Bhubaneswar on Malaria eradication and distributed 70 mosquito nets for the slum dwellers during the year 2014-15.

    Formation of MAS (Mahila Arogya Samithi) With an aim to sensitize the slum dwellers on health, sanitation, nutrition and health practices 5 MAS were formed at Bhubaneswar with the women leaders of the slums.

    Quality and Equitable Education for all To ignite the spirit of Right to Education, Vikash continued its campaign for Quality and Equitable education for all the children.

    Pre-schooling

    Vikash facilitated running two pre-schools in Koraput and Puri district. These schools help the children learn for getting socialize, get along with other children, learn numbers, shapes, alphabets etc. The students at the schools were involved in extracurricular activities like physical exercise, music, yoga, singing, dance etc. apart from regular teaching.

    Special Child labour Schools Vikash had operated a special school at Dharmashala Block of Jajpur under National Child Labour Prevention program. The centre had provided vocational training for the children and also organized sensitization programs for the children and parents on health and hygiene.

    Health camps Vikash at Narayanpatna block had conducted 10 health camps for the tribals and 3 health camps for livestock maintained by tribals for arranging health care services, medicines and vaccination of livestock.

    Livelihood

    Introduction of Off Season Vegetable Cultivation Off season vegetable cultivation now-a-days became popularized at Koraput district due to the climate condition. During this year 8 trainings were conducted with 200 participants on off season vegetable cultivation, 160 SHG members were involved in vegetable cultivation and 55 acres of land was brought under vegetable cultivation at Narayanpatna Block of Koraput district.

    WADI model plantation “WADI” programme is focused on development of small fruit orchard, agriculture improvement through inter cropping and restoration of denuded land through soil and moisture conservation measures. In the year 2014-15, Vikash had promoted WADI plantation in 40 acres of land which was benefited to 10 farmers by cultivating 800 cashew plants and Mango plants at Narayanpatna Block of Koraput district.

    Poultry Unit 37 Modern poultry units were constructed and dedicated at 10 Villages to benefit 40 poor tribals for providing sustainable livelihood. Training on chick rearing and poultry management was provided to 30 members from 6 SHGs Narayanpatna block of Koraput.

    Vending Vikash had supported 4 beneficiaries in transition from traditional vending to modern vending process for improving their standard of living.

    Grocery units Vikash recognized the market potentiality of the grocery units in hilly tribal areas and provided support of Grocery units for 10 tribal families at Narayanpatna Block of Koraput district for increasing their income status.

    Agro Processing Unit Rice hullers were provided to 3 households at Tentulipadar, ichhapur, Tangilipadar villages of Narayanpatna block for processing the rice grains; thus saving lot of time and money in travelling long distances for rice processing of the villagers.

    Construction of Drying Yards Vikash had constructed 5 drying yards to help the village farmers in drying their agriculture products at Tentulipadar, Balipeta, Ichhapur, Gumandi and Rangapani villages. In addition to drying the agri-products, the village community is also using these drying yards for Village level meetings and functions.

    Low Cost Housing Under Integrated Development of Tribal areas, low cost housing technologies were adopted to support in providing low cost housing for 25 ultra at Narayanpatna block of Koraput district.

    Village Development Committees formation & Strengthening Vikash has formed and strengthened Village Development Committee (VDC) and Watershed Associations for involving village members in developmental activities. During 2014-15, 9 watershed associations were formed, 86 training programs were conducted for 14 VDCs on Planning, designing, implementation, Problem solving, book keeping and governance at Narayanpatna Block of Koraput district.

    SHG formation and strengthening 47 SHGs comprising 470 members were formed and strengthened during the year 2014-15. Exposure visits were organized for the SHG members to various blocks of Koraput district on Broom Making, Vegetable Cultivation, NTFP collection, Artisan development etc.

    Micro Credit The cooperatives facilitated by Vikash and independently managed by the members organize credit for the members and groups. The credits are given primarily for business. Besides, credit is extended during critical periods.

    Habitat

    Sanitation A workshop was conducted at Nimapara of Puri district to create awareness among the local public and students with regard to water and sanitation Sanitation drives were organized through citizens groups to sensitize the communities and local authorities about the importance of sanitation at at Konark & Nimpara NAC. Two rallies were organized in Konark and Nimapara NACs for increasing awareness on WATSAN program.

    Bio-medical waste disposal Vikash is managing the Bio-medical waste management program of 50 bedded hospital at NALCO, Damanjodi in Koraput district.

    Construction of Tube well platform During the year 2014-15, tube well platforms of 6 numbers were constructed at Narayanpatna block of Koraput and 8 Bargarh block of Bargarh district.

    Construction of Bathing step and changing room Vikash took up constructing bathing step and ladies dress changing room to keep the surroundings clean and tidy. In the year 2014-15, Vikash constructed 12 numbers of hi-tech model ladies changing room and bathing steps with low cost technology in Bargarh block of Bargarh district. Sensitization programs were also organized in 16 villages to maintain proper sanitation at the surroundings of the pond and improve their social life style.

    Skill building training programs Skill building training programs were organized on various agricultural and income generation activities for 722 beneficiaries during 2014-15 at Narayanpatna block of Koraput district.

    Construction of Village Mandap (Community meeting platform) Vikash had constructed 3 community meeting platforms at tribal villages of Narayanpatna Block of Koraput district to provide a place for village meetings and for various cultural events of the village.

    Good Governance Citizens’ participation plays a vital role in developing a strong system of local self-governance. Vikash undertook the following activities in the year 2014-15.

    Training program for counselors Training programme for the Chairman and 13 Councilors was organized by Vikash in collaboration with Lok Samukhya at Konark on Decentralization of Urban Governance, Urban Planning & Development, Urban Challenges & Urban Poverty management, Resource Mobilization. Panel discussion was organized on Status of Urban Governance in Odisha and challenges faced by local ULBs.

    Empowerment of Ward committees Five Ward Committees of Konark NAC and four ward Committees of Nimapara NAC were formed by Vikash during 2014-15. The major achievement of the ward committees are Installation of dustbins in ward no-4, 7, 8 and 11 of Konark NAC , collection of wastage on weekly basis from Nimapara , repair of water tapes and installation street lights in both the NACs.

    Facilitating hosting of a website Vikash launched a website named, www.mycity1.com for highlighting various aspects of urban governance, emerging issues, Government initiatives for empowerment of urban bodies and latest developments of Konark NAC.

    City Resource Centre Vikash had established a City Resource Center at Konark NAC to provide information on developmental issues & activities of Konark. Local public, youth, social activists, media personnel, women activists, community leaders, tourists etc. had visited the Resource Centre and interacted on development of Konark NAC.

    IEC Material preparation and dissemination Information materials were prepared based on the issues & developmental activities published in various news papers. These communication materials were disseminated during various trainings, workshops, meetings and individual interactions of the staff with stakeholders.

    Publication of bulletin “Sahar Samachar” an annual bulletin reflecting voices of people and public representatives on transparency in governance and grievance was published by Vikash in the year 2014-15. The bulletin was disseminated to elected representatives, NAC officials, media reporters and opinion leaders.

    State level Driver’s group on urban governance A state level Drivers Group on urban governance was formed by Vikash to create a common platform for the Councilors, Chair persons and other stakeholders from the state.

    Research and Development

    Design and development of rice transplanter A small power operated, four row rice transplanter using mat type seedlings was developed by Vikash. 45 farmers of 5 villages have been trained and technology developed by Vikash has been transferred.
