Part - A The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year. 2009-10 has been the year during which the institution is celebrating its SILVER JUBILEE YEAR. The institution has identified the following objectives covering various important activities in the institution.
1. Academic Objective 2. Employability Objective 3. Industry Objective 4. Research Objective 5. Professional Objective
Academic Objective • To achieve a minimum pass percentage of 75% in the end semester examinations
from 2008-09. • To achieve academic excellence by:
o improving full pass percentage in each end semester examinations by at least 2%, if the result is below 85%
o improving full pass percentage by at least 1% per year, if the result is greater than 85%
From the Academic Year 2008-2009 for at least 3 years and review thereafter. • To improve the pass percentage of a particular semester by 1%, when compared
with the performance of earlier batch of the same semester of a particular programme.
Research Objective (RO):
• To establish sustained research programs in every department, by obtaining
Research Cell status from Anna University by the departments within two years after achieving eligibility;
o To publish at least two papers in national or international journals per year
per eligible department o To obtain one externally funded project by every department at least once in
three years o To attend at least one research seminar /symposia / workshop/ conference
by every member of the faculty once in two years o Each member of the faculty to mentor at least two UG/PG projects every
year o To organize at least 3 National Conferences per year and one International
Conference every 3 years

Professional Development Objective (PO):
This pertains to the development of faculty and supporting staff professionally so
that they may discharge their assigned functions effectively and efficiently. The management has set a goal of achieving following norms.
The faculties are recruited with post graduate qualification but if they are to contribute effectively to research and publish articles in the journals and conferences, it is essential that they acquire doctorate degree in their chosen field. Sometimes suitable candidates with PG degree may not be available but a potentially good teacher may be available with only graduate qualification. They must be encouraged to do PG course. With this in mind the management has set a norm of sponsoring 3% of the faculty for higher studies every year.
In order to teach effectively and guide students in their project work, the faculty must keep abreast of latest developments in their chosen field. This they can do by attending Faculty Development Programs like conferences, workshops and seminars. So the objective set a norm that each faculty must attend at least one FDP every two years.
A lot of improvement in development activities in the institution can be brought about by interacting with peers and leaders in the same field. Each discipline has at least one professional forum to bring engineers together once a year. These societies also bring News Letters and Journals for the benefit of members. Association with such societies is a form of professional development. To achieve this management requires that faculty members become members of at least one society within two years of joining.
Managing the department involves handling students, staff and faculty, initiating improvements in the laboratory like replacing obsolete equipment, plan for the future and managing the funds. This calls for management skills and hence it has been decided that two of the faculty who have put in reasonable period of service in the college and attained the designation of professor be sponsored for management training in reputed schools.
The laboratories are being equipped with modern equipment with latest technology. To operate and maintain these equipment the supporting staffs have to be trained in skill development programs. So the objective requires that at least 2% of the supporting staff be sponsored for skill development programs.
The objective leader, with the help of departmental coordinators, monitors the progress every six months and submits a report to the Management Representative. He also convenes a meeting of the coordinators once a month to discuss the achievement of the objective in each department. He is internally audited once in six months, prior to the Management Review Meeting, and is answerable to any NCRs and is given opportunities for improvement by the internal auditors.

A sample of the report submitted is given below.
1. Faculty acquiring higher qualification: As per the objective norms 3% of faculties have to be encouraged to acquire higher qualification. In the last 6 months 8 faculty have acquired higher qualification and 6 have registered for higher studies. This works out to be approximately 6% at the college level.
2. FDP: All faculty are required to attend at least one FDP in two years. This will be amply met as during the reporting period of 6 months 78 faculty have attended 72 programs.
3. Supporting staff: 8 non-teaching staffs have undergone training including two who have acquired higher qualification. This is about 10% whereas the specification is only 2%.
4. Management training: As per the objective requirement at least two professors have to be trained per year. This is one objective which requires greater awareness and attention.
5. Membership of professional societies: Every new staff member has to become member of at least one society within two years of joining. Data are being collected among the new staff members as we have to give two years time period.
Employability Objective (EO): • Aiming for 90 % and not less than 75 % employment through campus interview by
providing opportunities in both core and other sectors. • Imparting employability skills through training programmes to at least 25 % of the
students (final and pre-final year).
Industry Objective (IO): Through MOU or otherwise:
• At least 5 % of the students to undergo in-plant training in industries during the course of study
• At least 25 % of the students to do industrially relevant projects in their final year
• To sponsor at least one faculty member per department to undergo short term industrial training once in a year
• To organize workshop/ seminar in collaboration with industry / organization at least once in a year
• To utilize the facilities and faculty expertise at the college for the benefit of industry (e.g., consultancy, testing, analysis, etc) and generate a minimum of Rs. 1 Lakh/- per year

(Member of Board of studies and Syllabus revision committee of Anna University, Technology Board) were implemented by the University in the B.Tech Anna University, Engineering Curriculum, 2010. 1. 4 hrs has been allotted instead of 3 hrs inorder to maintain
uniformity for the laboratory courses [BT 2308 -Bioinformatics lab (Semester V) and BT 2358 - Bioprocess lab (Semester VI )]
2. Protein engineering (BT 2354) was shifted from VI semester to VII semester and Immunology theory (BT 2402) was shifted from VII semester to VI semester, since Immunology and Immunotechnology (as an elective in the Elective II) were in the same semester.
3. It was recommended to add experiments-Principles of electrophoresis- 2D gel and Iso- Electric focusing in BT 2357 Genetic Engineering Lab, as Analytical Techniques in Biotechnology Lab was deleted.
4. Syllabus for Bioinformatics II – BT2351 was included, perhaps this syllabus may include some areas of Genomics and Proteomics in it, since these areas were not included in the curriculum.

7. INITIATIVE TOWARDS FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME:

As an initiative towards faculty development, the college arranged a one week
programme on Instructional Design and Delivery System, conducted by the National Institute
of Technical Teacher Training and Research. All faculty members in their first year of service
in SVCE were benefited by the programme. Faculty members willing to participate in
national/international training/workshops/seminars/conferences are encouraged by giving
sponsorships and On Duty for attending the same.

NCC Naval division was inaugurated on 12th September 2003 with a sanctioned strength of 50 cadets. NCC Naval division in our college is attached with 4 (TN) Naval Tech NCC Unit, Which is the only Naval technical unit in India.
Our College is one of the very few institutions in India having all three wing of NCC namely Army, Navy and Air wings.
2. Training of Cadets:
A total of 20 parades had been conducted and cadets were given regular training as per the training syllabus. The syllabus covers common subjects such as Drills, Leadership qualities, First aid, Health and hygiene, National Integration, Adventure activities, Social service, Ecology and environmental protection. The technical subjects includes ship construction, Ship propulsion machinery, Auxiliary machinery systems and control systems.
3. Ceremonial Parades:
Independence day and Republic day ceremonial parades were conducted in the early morning. Cadets attended the parades in good turnout and remembered the days of national importance.

4. Naval Technical Attachment Camp: Eight NCC Naval Cadets have attended the Naval Technical Attachment Camp – 2009, from 26 June - 09 July, 2009. The camp was held in two phases, I phase at INS Valsura, at Jamnagar and II phase at Naval Dockyard, Visakapatnam.
In INS Valsura, at Jamnagar cadets were attached to various departments as follows, • Training Design and Evaluation Cell (TDEC) • Basic Electrical School (BLS) • Electrical Technology School (LTS) • Electrical Equipment School (LES) • Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) • Centre for Electronics Engineering (CEE) • New Induction Equipment (NIE)
They were also trained in fire fighting, Damage control in Nuclear, biological and chemical warfare. Cadets were trained in rigorous exercise in physical training and cross country.
In the second phase of the camp at Naval Dockyard, Visakapatnam, cadets had a chance to visit the various departments in the dockyard, Naval ships and Submarines.
The cadets were taken to INS Eksila, the base established for the purpose of overhauling gas turbines. This establishment is the first of its kind in the whole of Asia. The cadets have visited various sections of the base such the dismantling section, Chemical bay, Auxiliary section, Adaptor section, Welding section, etc.
The cadets were taken to submarine INSM Kursura, which has been made a museum after her decommissioning from the Indian Navy. The submarine is 91.3m long, with 7 compartments weighing 1945 tons. The submarine had provisions for carrying 22 torpedoes onboard.

5. Combined Annual Training Camp 2008:
30 Cadets have attended the Combined Annual Training Camp held at the Jeppiaar Engineering College from 21 Dec to 30 Dec 2009. The cadets were trained in the following areas physical Training, foot drill, Arms drill, firing, Boat pulling, swimming, ship modelling, seamanship practices, fire fighting with demonstration of fighting fire with fire extinguishers.
Prizes won by the cadets in the Camp Volley ball – Winners Basket ball – Runners .

8. Blood Donation Camp: 30 NCC Naval cadets have donated their precious blood in the blood donation camp
conducted in our college. NCC – ARMY
Strength: We have full strength of 77 cadets enrolled as per the requirement with the breakup of 63 from first year and 14 from second year. Training: The training was carried out as per the syllabus prescribed by Dir Gen NCC, New Delhi. As a part of the core training a special lecture about the “ various types of engines and their functions” was conducted at Automobile lab, SVCE on 3rd Oct 2009. Camps:
45 cadets from NCC (Army) wing and one NCC officer attended the ‘Combined Annual Training Camp’ at Kancheepuram from 27th Aug 2009 to 6th Sep 2009.
6 cadets from NCC (Army) wing and one NCC officer attended the centrally organized ‘CATC –cum-SSB Camp’ conducted at CRPF, Avadi during 6th September 2009 to 5th October 2009.
77 cadets and 1 ANO from NCC (Army) wing participated in the one day short range firing camp held at Air Force Station, Tambaram on 24th Feb 2009. Examinations: All cadets who undertook the B and C certificate examinations passed with excellent grades.

Blood donation camp: Our cadets never hesitate in donating blood. Blood donation is a part of our community development activity. 43 NCC (Army) wing cadets donated blood in the “Blood donation camp” held at our college during 6th and 8th March 2010. Achievements:

At the mid of each semester, the students having attendance percentage of 85% and
above would be submitting the feedback on faculty members handling theory and lab classes
for them during their lab classes in the format available online.
Once the students submit their feedback, the data is analyzed using the software
available and the reports will be generated. The Head of the Department will then meet the
faculty members individually and counsel them if necessary.

Medical Centre of our college is having 6 beds. A doctor and a nurse are available in
the campus assissted by a 24hr ambulance. Laboratory for blood investigations and ECG are
also available. Students are treated for common ailments and minor injuries. Employees are
also availing the facility of medical centre services. Nearest Multi Speciality hospital is in
Porur, chennai at a distance of approximately 20 km from the college and is connected by a
national highway. College canteen and hostel mess are inspected regularly and maintained to
meet the standards prescribed by Anna University and Health Department.

The college has well equipped Physical Education Department providing equipments

Students are encouraged to participate in national/international conferences and
workshops to present papers and other mini projects. The college provides full funding to
deserving students every year at all departments. Apart from academic related events, students
are well trained and allowed to participate in cultural and sports activities at both national and
state level.
36. ACTIVITIES OF THE GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING CELL:
A batch of 25 students is attached to a faculty advisor, who takes them through the
course from the first year. The person maintains close contact with the respective batch and
monitors the progress of each student. In addition to the academic performance, the faculty
advisor gives guidance and counseling as needed by the students. Once in a month the faculty
advisor compulsorily meets the students and updates the students on recent academic details as
well as seeks feedback from them regarding academic and other activities. The faculty advisor
discusses these points with the authorities concerned and communicates back the remedial
action taken.
Class committee (comprising of all the faculty members handling class) meetings are
conducted, twice in a semester, to assess the academic performance of every class. All
academic related issues are discussed, both from faculty and student end, and suitable
corrective action taken.
Once in a semester, a parent’s meet is arranged to have an open discussion regarding
their ward’s progress, as well as for seeking feedback from the parents on specific issues.
