Pages were missing from the 8irst and the last signatures. Many of the signatures were split or partially torn along the spine. Many pages had tears in the edges. 2) Conservation work on the book A) Cleaning the (horse) glue off the spine and resewing the mended folios (strengthened with kizukishi paper guards). Newspaper clippings that were attached to pages with glue were removed with an electric spatula and encapsulated in mylar (photo below). Pages torn at the edges were @ixed with Tengucho papers.

Conservation Notes (Sharon Gershoni, 2011)

1) The Condition of the book

The book cover was detached and had tears in the spine.Pages were missing from the 8irst and the last signatures.Many of the signatures were split or partially torn along the spine.Many pages had tears in the edges.

2) Conservation work on the book

A) Cleaning the (horse) glue off the spine and resewing the mended folios (strengthened with kizukishi paper guards). Newspaper clippings that were attached to pages  with glue were removed with an electric spatula and encapsulated in mylar (photo below). Pages torn at the edges were @ixed with Tengucho papers.

B) First and last folios and end papers (Ingres paper) were sewn to the text block together with hinges made of Moriki paper that was dyed with acryl colors to match the book cover.

C) The spine was rounded and strengthened with multiple laters of Japanese paper ranging in strength (Tengucho, Kizukishi, Sekishi, Okawara, and cotton cloth). The spine was then @itted with a 2­up hollow tube (Doves Grey paper).

D) The cover was mended with moriki paper (dyed with acrylic colors to match the cover)

E) The text block was @it to the cover, and strengthened with cotton cloth and covered by the Moriko paper hinges
