Politics visit to WashingtonDuring the February half term a group of Year 12 and 13 students studying A level Sociology and Government & Politics went on a 5 day educational visit to New York and Washington.

In New York, students had the opportunity to explore the big city and its famous landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Empire State building by night, as well as visiting

Ellis Island to see first-hand the history of immigration within America; this aided both groups of students in their contextual understanding of American history.

Whilst in New York the students also had the opportunity to spend time at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum which was both a sobering and eye-opening experience for both students and staff. At Ground Zero the group learnt the personal stories of those killed and were able to see the artefacts from the event on display such as the building’s foundations, a staircase that survived the attack and the fire trucks that were recovered from the piles of ash.

On the final day in New York students were given a guided bus tour of Harlem and taught the history of NYC; from seeing where John Lennon was assassinated, to visiting the UN building, the students were informed about a vast timeline of the city and its cultural diversity.

The group then travelled to Washington DC where they visited a number of memorials commemorating those who died in World War II, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr as well as the Vietnamese and the Korean Wars.

On the fourth day the students were taken on a guided tour of Capitol Hill and had the chance to see the Congress Library and the Capitol Building. They also had the opportunity to meet a political lobbyist working on behalf of the Native American tribes. They learnt about his views on America’s current political situation and what his job entails as a lobbyist; this meeting

was particularly useful to the Government & Politics students who are currently studying the topic of Pressure Groups and Lobbying in class and so were able to see the real life

application of this part of American politics. With a visit to the National Archives to complete the trip, seeing the original Declaration of Independence and the American Constitution, the students had their fill of political and sociological information that will heavily benefit them in their upcoming summer exams and also take away an amazing experience to remember forever. – by Megan Moore 13HAS

Year 12 Law visit to London Year 12 law students chattered with excitement on the train to London. We walked to Brick Lane for supper through Victorian streets where Jack the Ripper once lurked.

After visiting the majestic Houses of Parliament, we walked across Parliament Square to the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, there were no hearings going on, as all the Law Lords were in Barbados! They weren’t sunning themselves under palm trees, though; they were sitting as the Privy Council, which is the highest court of appeal for Commonwealth countries.

We then crossed the Thames to go up the London Eye. Back across the river, where we visited a barristers’ chambers and talked to a barrister, who let us try on her wig and gown. We then went the stunning Middle Temple Hall for a fantastic lunch, sitting with judges and barristers. Remember what Hogwarts looks like? That was based on Middle Temple hall. Members of the public aren’t allowed in, normally, but we pulled a few strings...

We crossed the Strand to go to the Royal Courts of Justice. Unfortunately, the Tunisia inquests weren’t sitting, but we saw a doctor being questioned about injuries sustained by a Kenyan during the Mao Mao rebellion.

We then walked through the gardens and cloisters of picturesque Lincolns’ Inn, another of the Inns of Court to which barristers are affiliated. After a relaxed and atmospheric Moroccan meal, we went to a West End theatre to watch the outrageously hilarious Book of Mormon. We giggled all the way back to the hotel. The next morning, we were immensely privileged to meet judges at the Old Bailey. They showed us the famous Court 1, where Crippen and Christie were tried, and told us about the history of the court . We were then allowed to sit in the Press Gallery in court to watch three witnesses give evidence in a manslaughter trial. It was fascinating and moving; a drunken row where the victim was punched to the ground. He managed to make it home but died from head injuries. We saw a photograph of the room where he died; there were frozen chips on the floor, which he had used to ease the pain of his head injury. As the judge said, it was just a stupid row about nothing; and if they hadn’t been drunk, it wouldn’t have happened at all.

We finished with retail therapy in Covent Garden and slept on the train back. What a trip!!

Keele University Medical Careers DayTen students who are considering studying medicine had the opportunity to find out more about a career in this exciting and challenging field at the Keele University Medical Careers Day on 8th March.

The students, all in Years 11 and 12, sampled life as a medical student through practical sessions on infectious disease and (fake!) urine tests. Admissions tutors, surgeons and current medical students talked to them about the realities of studying to become a doctor as

well as the challenges facing the NHS. Overall, this was a fantastic day which gave students a lot of information to help them make decisions regarding their post-18 choices.

NOTES

To our Year 7 and 8 parents As explained in the Year 7 and 8 Expectation Evenings in the autumn term, we have introduced a new assessment and reporting system in order to understand our students’ performance more fully. We have therefore taken extra time with our Year 7 and 8 assessments certificates as they are the first in the new system. The certificates will go out next week and we are very much looking forward to feedback on them. Year 7 and 8 reports will go out after the end of year assessments. Below is a link to the Expectations Evening information: http://www.wilmslowhigh.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Expectations-Evening-.pptx

New school uniform and PE kit suppliersFollowing a tendering process, the school has appointed a new school uniform supplier and PE kit supplier. ‘Express Uniform’ is now the official supplier of Wilmslow High School uniform and ‘Surridge Sport’ is the official supplier for PE kit; we are very much looking forward to working with both companies.

How will the new suppliers advertise and sell their clothing? Both suppliers will sell items via their websites. The link to the Express Uniform website and the telephone number to call for PE kit enquiries, can be accessed via the ‘uniform’ quick link tab on the front page of the school website .

Does either supplier have a shop where I can purchase items? No. Both suppliers will run ‘pop-up’ shops in Wilmslow High School and in local primary schools during high demand times (dates will be advertised). At other times, purchases can be made online or over the phone, directly with the suppliers.

How do I purchase replacement school uniform now?Express Uniform should be contacted by phone (01625 744 888) or online: www.expressuniform.co.uk

How do I purchase replacement PE kit now?The current Puma branded PE kit is now available at a discounted price from the school PrintWorks shop. To purchase any items of the current PE kit contact a member of the school PrintWorks team to place an order and arrange a collection time: 01625 441 059

Why is the current Puma PE kit being offered at a ‘discounted’ price? The new PE kit supplier will be selling their own brand Surridge PE kit. These items will be similar in style, colour and quality to the current Puma PE kit but will not be available until later in the Summer Term. During this transition period, parents/carers will have the option of purchasing the discounted Puma kit from school , while stocks last or wait for the new PE kit to become available.

Can my son/daughter wear the current Puma PE kit next year? Both styles of PE kit will be acceptable for lessons and fixtures for at least the next two years, so there is no pressure on parents/carers to purchase the new Surridge PE kit until they need to. The only Year group that must purchase the new Surridge PE kit is the current Year 6.

Could I purchase the new Surridge PE kit and also purchase the current discounted Puma PE kit as a spare set?Yes. Students will be allowed to wear either style of branded kit. The new Surridge PE will be available later in the Summer Term.

Can I still purchase second-hand uniform and PE kit from school?Yes. The second-hand shop will still be the most cost effective way of purchasing school uniform and PE kit, though their stock is limited to donations. The shop will be open in High Options every Tuesday afternoon between 1.30 - 2.30pm. The number to call to enquire about purchasing or donating uniform is: 07889 924692

I M P O R T A N T I N F O R M A T I O N

Will there be an opportunity to try sample sizes before ordering? The school PrintWorks shop has sample PE kit stock on site. ‘Express Uniform’ will be operating a ‘pop-up’ shop in school. Dates and times will be advertised.
