Annual Report 2015
Renovation Update
Science, technology, engineer-
ing, arts and math have become
an area of intense focus at Seton
Catholic High School for the
last two years. A tremendous
effort has been put forth to
secure resources needed to
invest in the facilities
to ensure an environ-
ment appropriate for
learning in these
STEAM areas.
The initial phase
adapted the former
library space to be-
come the permanent
band and choir room.
A drop ceiling was
installed, and sound
panels were hung to
improve the acoustics
in the room. Shelves
were reconfigured to
accommodate musical
instrument storage, and ergo-
nomic chairs were purchased to
support proper posture for
musicians. And finally after
nine years in a makeshift
classroom, the music program
had a permanent home.
The next phase of the STEAM
renovation project was much
more involved. Before the high
school opened years ago, the
plans called for two science labs
and two classrooms on the east
side of the upper floor in the
area that had been used as a
gymnasium and assembly hall
in the former St. Andrew’s
School. A corridor was
constructed down the center of
the former gym and stage area,
and the space was
divided with one
classroom and one
lab on each side
of the hallway.
After a year’s worth
of construction, in-
cluding the addition
of wiring, plumb-
ing, heating, cool-
ing and ventilation,
we now have two
beautiful new lab
spaces. The labs
each have a ventila-
tion hood, lab sinks
and an interactive
projector all combining to en-
hance the students’ “hands on”
experience in the study of sciences.

Dickman are pictured celebrating the first day in the new chemistry lab.

Alumni Corner
For graduates Stephanie (Dargie)
and Stevie Hornak the Chuck Mosey
Memorial Gymnasium will always
be more than the home of a great
volleyball match, basketball game or
PE class. The two graduated in
2009 and 2010, respectively, having
met during their junior high years
through mutual friends, and were
married in the summer of
2014. The intimate, often
crowded, gym of Seton Cath-
olic High was also the home
of their wedding reception.
Stephanie and Stevie both
credit their relationship with
God, their faith life and their
career endeavors not just to
their families, but also the
education they received at
Seton Catholic Schools.
“What I got from Seton was
more than an education. I
got to live out and learn
about the Catholic faith.
I got to participate in Branch
Out Day and plan and organ-
ize fundraisers and food
drives for local nonprofits.
I was required to do service
hours, which at the time I
definitely complained about, but
I definitely learned a lot from those
experiences,” says Stephanie.
Stevie added, “Seton has been the
center and foundation of my educa-
tion. All the way from kindergar-
ten to graduating high school, I
learned that education came second
to having a strong relationship with
God. I was taught early on to treat
others as I would want to be treated
and that mindset has stuck with me
throughout my life.”
Another thing that has stuck with
both of them is their love of
science! After graduation, Stevie
enrolled at Earlham College and
graduated with college and depart-
mental honors in biochemistry in
2014. After working a full year
at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis as a
biochemist, Stevie enrolled in
Earlham’s MAT graduate program
in education. This school year,
Stevie is student teaching second-
ary biology and chemistry at Tri
High. “Seton gave me the oppor-
tunity to coach high school baseball
which was the spark to wanting to
be a teacher,” said Stevie.
Stephanie graduated from Indiana
University East in 2013 majoring in
secondary science education
and minoring in biology. Currently
she teaches 8th grade science at
Centerville Junior High, and coach-
es the 8th grade volleyball
team there. On her inspira-
tion, Stephanie said, “I had
some great teachers at Seton
who inspired me to also
become a teacher.”
The Hornaks agree that there
was never a time in college
that they felt unprepared
thanks to the education they
received at Seton Catholic
High School. Stevie shared,
“SCHS prepared me not
only academically, but more
importantly instilled the
character strength of perse-
verance. This was achieved
through the rigorous aca-
demics and also the oppor-
tunity to be a three sport
athlete, which would not
have been possible at a larger
school. At Seton I learned the
study skills and habits that made
me successful in my college
endeavors. The competitive atmos-
phere and high expectations from
the teachers always challenged me
to strive for more than just the bare
minimum.”
Alumni Stephanie (Dargie) and Stevie Hornak tie the knot
and celebrate at their alma mater.

Each year our Seton Catholic
Elementary school grows stronger
and stronger! That growth is due to
YOU! Parents, grandparents, guard-
ians, parishioners, and alumni –
all give so, so much to our school.
I become overwhelmed with all of
your participation of time, talent,
and treasure for our children.
You have always given generously
to our school fundraisers, the annual
Walk-a-thon and the Cardinal 5K
Run. Both events help us provide
big ticket items for our students,
such as new play equipment or new
technology pieces.
You have given generously to the
Annual Fund which generates extra
dollars for school projects and field
experiences that tuition dollars do
not cover.
You have donated tremendous
amounts of items for our school. We
have received medical supplies,
uniform clothing, books, computer
supplies, recess games to name a few.
Many, many of you participate in the
SCRIP program to buy gas, groceries,
and other necessities. Those dollars
add to our instructional program also.
You help us financially by turning in
“Box Tops for Education” or by sign-
ing up for Kroger, Marsh or Meijer
credit card points. Again, those dol-
lars help us with extra projects.
And so many of you give time,
which is precious to us. So many
attend camps or field trips as chaper-
ones. Many help us monitor lunch or
recesses. Many read to our children
or help them edit writing pieces.
Many give time to the Athletic
Boosters or as coaches for elemen-
tary sports. Many help our parent
organization, Home & School,
with interesting student projects.
The help and the relationship
building is invaluable.
Most recently, scores of you took up
the challenge to raise funds for the
Seton Catholic High School STEAM
project, renovating the school’s
top floor. Indirectly, that affects our
elementary students too. The young-
er children learned about the addition
of the new band room, new science
labs, and new classrooms. In fact,
they helped pray for the renovation
completion daily. Then the younger
students toured the renovation that
you helped complete. They know
the time, dollars, and care it took to
finish – and someday in their future,
those students will learn in that
environment!
Thank you so much for the energy
you put forth for our elementary
students! We cannot possibly have
a quality program without your
assistance of time, talent, and
treasure. We are blessed by you,
most definitely. We hope to use
your gifts to further our Catholic
education – all for the glory of God!
God bless,
Kim Becker
Principal, Seton Elementary

Dear Seton Family,
On behalf of the current and future
students at Seton Catholic High
School, I would like to thank you
for your overwhelming generosity.
As you know, we have spent the
past two years engaged in a
concerted effort to raise sufficient
funds to completely transform the
top floor of the high school. Your
response to our invitation to give of
your treasure has simply been
amazing. Thanks to you, we raised
nearly $290,000 for the renovation
project! I stand in awe of your
support and want to convey my
sincerest appreciation.
We are blessed, indeed. A wide
array of skilled professional
contractors and caring parishioners
has committed their time and talent
to make this project a reality.
Thanks to their skilled hands and
attention to detail, the finished
product will be truly impressive.
The new, well-appointed band/
music room is a big hit with our
students. Two brand new science
labs opened this fall, and two
additional classrooms are quickly
taking shape. Once completed, the-
se new spaces will greatly enhance
the teaching-learning process in
the critical areas of Science,
Technology, Engineering, the Arts,
and Mathematics (STEAM).
The mission of our school is to
move our students to grow in their
spirituality. It is our work to create
a time and a place to nurture
respect in the students for them-
selves and others. I am sure you
would agree that integrating the
spiritual with the intellectual is
what Catholic education does best.
This year, the success stories of
Seton Catholic High School are
really taking root, including
the challenging curriculum, com-
mitment to long-range strategic
planning, and the partnership be-
tween students, teachers and par-
ents. SCHS has a wonderful story
to tell, and I appreciate you taking
a leadership role in helping us
continue to spread the good news.
Those who have passed through
our doors have made our past.
They, and you, will also ensure
our future. Thank you again for
investing in our school and in the
students we serve. I appreciate
your belief in Seton Catholic
High School.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Rick J. Ruhl
Principal, SCHS
The third phase of the renovation is
currently underway. The space at the
far East end of the upper floor that had
once been a stage is gradually emerg-
ing as a new art classroom, and a tech-
nology classroom. The art class had
met in this area in prior years, but lack
of storage, insufficient lighting and
climate control that wasn’t up to the
task, made the setting less than ideal.
The newly renovated classrooms will
each be outfitted with amenities partic-
ular to the subject being taught. Each
of the rooms will have much needed
storage added. The art room will have
a sink for cleaning up after art projects,
and the technology classroom will
have a secure area for the more valua-
ble components needed for Seton
Catholic’s 1-to-1 technology program.
These improvements are evidence of
Seton Catholic’s commitment to
growth. Striving to enhance the edu-
cational experience for our students
is a priority. These improvements are
also evidence of the tremendous
community support for Seton Catho-
lic. Without lab equipment from
Earlham College, construction mate-
rials from Thor Construction, labor
donated by many good stewards, and
the generous financial support
offered by so many in the communi-
ty, this project would not have been
accomplished. And prayer. Many
thanks for the prayers that have been
offered by students, teachers, parents,
parishioners, and all others in the
community. Without prayer, none of
this would have been possible.

Here’s Why “They” Do It...
“We support Seton for a number of
reasons. Seton provides a high
quality education that challenges
our kids and requires them to think
and be creative, in addition to
providing a positive and safe learn-
ing environment where prayer is
always welcomed and encouraged.
Our kids enjoy Seton Catholic and
do not want to go anywhere else!”
~ Jim & Beth Meeks
“We are proud to financially
support Seton Catholic Schools
because the rewards the teachers,
educational personnel, administra-
tion and volunteers provide for
our children are abundant.
The rewards received by the
students spiritually, academically,
and socially greatly surpass
our contributions.”
~ Brian & Kim Moore
“KJ3 Enterprises Inc. is proud to
support Seton Catholic Schools.
Their respectful students, devoted
staff members, and dedicated
families work tirelessly to bring
enriching activities and events
to our community.”
~ Mrs. Kara Hamilton,
Vice President

Seton Catholic Schools are very
blessed to have committed families,
parishioners and community mem-
bers who are willing to share their
time, talent and treasure with us.
Through generous annual fund do-
nors, SCRIP proceeds, and memori-
al gifts, we are able to bridge the gap
between tuition and expenses.
As you see in the bar graphs below,
tuition alone does not cover all the
expenses of Seton Catholic Schools.
By reviewing the breakdowns it is
easy to see that tuition barely ac-
counts for salary and benefits of our
faculty and staff, not even touching
the remaining financial needs.
Without your prayers and support,
we would be unable to continue the
ministry that is Seton Catholic
Schools. Thank you for your contin-
ual support of our schools.
Do not neglect to do good and
to share what you have, for such
sacrifices are pleasing to God.
