MEMBER HIGHLIGHT
My name is Tanya Gil Besanilla and I’m a junior at Texas State University. My major is Nursing with a minor in Exercise Sport and Science. I’m currently in the process of applying to nursing school for Fall 2020. Just being able to do the things I love, helping people in need, makes me more deter-mined to become a nurse. I recently took my citizenship test by myself because after 18 years old, you can’t become a citizen automatically when your parents take the exam. It was nerve-racking for me to go to the Homeland Security Department by myself and being interviewed alone. It took courage just to go by myself for the first time without my parents. In the end, it was worth it because I’m proud to say that now I am a citizen of the United States of America. As my mom says, “we don’t grow when things are easy, we grow when we face challenges,” and that is what I always carried in my mind when I encounter an obstacle in school or life.
MEET TANYA!
Student Support Services Association (SSSA)
On Tuesday, February 25th, the TRIO SSS Eboard hosted a profit share fundraiser at Torchys San Marcos. 15% of profits Torchys made that night went towards the SSSA scholarship for students of first generation, low income or a disability background. Through the hard work of the SSS Eboard and TRIO staff, a total of $157 was raised for the SSSA scholarship.

STEM STUDY SKILLS WORKSHOP
“People in San Marcos were so open to helping and providing for those who want to help our Texas State community such as our SSS students. The officers had a great time while trying to get customers to mention us at their time of purchase!” - Leslie Salazar
The STEM Study Skills Workshop was so much fun and very interactive. Throughout the presentation, our members gave our their own ideas and tips on how to maximize studying. It was a very productive and rewarding workshop!
