In 2005, the school was among those earmarked for closure, but was given reprieve, partly because the Renfrew County Dis- trict School Board benefitted by $103,000, once grants and operat- ing costs were determined. Among schools closed were Ross Mineview and Horton. However, grant formulas for rural and remote schools have changed, and enrolment has sharply declined at Calabogie Public since 2006, when the kin- dergarten-to-Grade 6 facility was reduced to a K- Grade 3 school. “We lost students to other schools because you chopped the grades ... It aggravates me that nothing has been done,” said parent Tracy Wilson. The number of students fell from more than 20 to seven in 2006-07 and has stayed in single figures. That has been despite efforts, pointed out trustee Mar- jorie Doering, to obtain Best Start funding to operate a day- care within the facility and draw more students to the school. Over the past three years, the school’s net operating savings have gradually dropped, from $74,000 to a projected $59,003 this year. And recent calculations show the school would have a small loss of $1,600 next school year. Furthermore, only two young- sters have been identified as students for next school year, and one would only be attending every second day. “It’s not our decision. It has to go to the trustees,” maintained Roger Clarke, the board’s direc- tor of education, about any deci- sion to close the school. “The next board meeting is at the end of May, so I suspect this conversation will be part of that agenda,” he added. Clarke also said closure “would obviously be a decision the board would have to make in the near future.” Local librarian Skippy Hale said she didn’t understand the apparent move to close, given a local population explosion and the probable need for a local public school within a few years. She also said this was a special place to learn. “I have seen wonderful things happening here,” she said. Knowing about 20 people were at Monday’s meeting, including five members of the public board, the media, school principal Dag- mar Stonehouse, three council members, and several parents, one parent asked, “Where’s the rest of the community?” “They’ve given up,” he was told. 178 Plaunt Street Renfrew, ON 613-432-7533 291017

The clock is ticking.During a two-hour meeting

at Calabogie Public School Mon-day night, parents made their case for keeping the elementary school open while applauding the excellent education their children have received.

“Personally, my daughter has had five years (here) and she’s had the best five years,” said parent Marlene Schaly, whose daughter Dayna will graduate from Grade 3 this year and attend school elsewhere in the fall.

In 2005, the school was among those earmarked for closure, but was given reprieve, partly because the Renfrew County Dis-trict School Board benefitted by $103,000, once grants and operat-ing costs were determined.

Among schools closed were Ross Mineview and Horton.

However, grant formulas for rural and remote schools have changed, and enrolment has sharply declined at Calabogie Public since 2006, when the kin-dergarten-to-Grade 6 facility was reduced to a K- Grade 3 school.

Benefi t organized for local man struck by Hodgkin’s lymphomaThe community is being invited to rally behind

a local family struck unexpectedly by illness.A benefi t to support Curt Spitznagel, who is

undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, will be held Saturday, May 23 in Renfrew.

The fundraiser will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Armouries.

Spitznagel’s brother-in-law, Fred Forster, said family and friends have organized the event, which will include a barbecue, bake table, candy fl oss, popcorn, refreshments, and children’s ac-tivities, games and face painting.

There will also be silent and live auctions, the latter featuring Kenny Dillabough.

Forster explained that Spitznagel has been off work since October. He has been taking chemo treatments, so will be laid up for some time yet, he added.

The well-known masonry expert lives with his wife and two boys in the Pucker Street area.

The event will not only rally the community to

NewsNewsNewsNewsraise money for the family, it’s a show of support to give them a boost during a diffi cult time, Forster said.

While most benefi ts are held in the evening, organizers deliberately scheduled the event for mid-day to enable fami-lies to attend, he said.

“It’s in support of a family; it will have a family atmo-sphere,” he said. “Holding it then gives the kids a chance to attend.”

Donations to the cause are welcome. Call 613-432-9310 for more information or to offer help.

MP announces recreational fundingThe following is a news release, issued Tuesday from the offi ce of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cher-yl Gallant.

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gal-lant is pleased to announce that project applica-tions can now be submitted under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program.

Local hockey rinks, arenas, swimming pools, sports fi elds and other community recreational sites throughout the riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke will be eligible to receive funding for fa-cility upgrades and repairs thanks to the new fed-eral government infrastructure program.

“By investing in recreational infrastructure in places like Palmer’s Rapids and Horton Township, our government continues to show our commit-ment to supporting communities,” said Gallant. “Our recreational facilities are vital social and ath-letic hubs where families, friends and neighbours can come together to get fi t and to have fun.”

The 2009 Federal Budget – Canada’s Economic Action Plan – provided $500 million over two years for the Recreational Infrastructure Canada pro-gram to support upgrading and renewal of recre-ational facilities in communities. Projects will be selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness. The governments of Canada and Ontar-io can each fund up to one third of a project’s total eligible cost up to a maximum of $1 million each per project, with recipients providing the remain-ing balance.

“The renewal of recreational infrastructure is critical to preserving and creating jobs today while revitalizing our communities for tomorrow,” said MP Gallant. “Investments in recreation build bet-ter communities, and stronger families.”

To maximize the number of recipients able to take advantage of the 2009 construction season, projects submitted before 5 p.m. EST on May 29, 2009, will be reviewed immediately with approved projects to be announced in June 2009. The reha-bilitation must be materially concluded by March 31, 2011.

Projects submitted after May 29, 2009, will be as-sessed and those approved will be announced in a timely fashion on an ongoing basis.

For details on project eligibility and how to sub-mit an application, please refer to the www.cher-ylgallant.com under the federal government pro-grams page.

Great time to expand the landfi llSTEVE.NEWMAN

[email protected] Township’s landfill site has

lasted more than 30 years, but it won’t last much longer.

It’s expected the Eady Road facility will be full by next year, unless the township successfully pursues a grant for a compaction project. That could expand the current site’s shelf life by

a few years, says Horton chief admin-istrative officer Mackie McLaren.

Horton Township has already cir-culated letters to neighbours living around the landfill site, prior to a public meeting June 2 to discuss the project and any public concerns.

The new project, at a cost of about $150,000, would basically double the size of the current landfill. Because

of the size of the expansion, a full environmental assessment is not required.

In 2007, Horton Township staff and council members thought they might face a $500,000 bill for a 40-year expan-sion to the landfill. Current landfill expansion plans may create a shelf life of 20 years, speculates McLaren.

TEDDY BEAR STROLL

I don’t get back to The Big City much any more.

After first moving to Ren-frew County after the ice storm of 1998, I was back to Ottawa as regular as clock-work on weekends. But life has changed.

A different life. A wife. A child. A family. A hobby farm with cats, dogs, horses and cows. Quiet places to walk, run, paddle and see the stars. Things to write about after avoiding a traf-fic jam of six cars instead of 600. A life that doesn’t need to be in the urban sprawl on a regular basis anymore.

Don’t get me wrong. There’s plenty attractive about The Big City. I wish I still had in my virtual backyard, like the Gatin-eau Park, my world-class masseur, my favourite ski, cycle and running shops, bookstores, Ottawa Bagel, friends, swimming pools. And the list could go on.

What I don’t miss is the noise, the pollution, back-yards the size of postage stamps, too many people telling you to have a nice day without looking at you, and the temptation to buy, buy, buy.

Almost every time I return from the city, my wife gives me this look that says: “Now what did you

buy this time?”Well, in my most recent

visit to the big city, for an Ontario Community News-papers Association awards banquet, the place of call was the provincial capital. And my purchases were as varied as ports of call at Yonge Street, St. Lawrence Market and The Skydome.

I’m not a big fan of Toronto, but I have to admit there’s still lots to like. And even more to absorb, if only because it’s different and because Toronto makes me appreciate what we have away from the city.

Sitting directly above home plate, but five levels up, during a Blue Jays-Ath-letics game was different.

So was a walk along Yonge Street the Friday night. A police car had pulled over and one of the officers was telling a fel-low not to do something. Farther down the street, a young fellow was standing on the sidewalk holding out a cup.

Minutes later, well after 9 p.m., I found a bookstore full of many old and some new books. After buying a new one for $10, I asked the Yugoslav immigrant-store operator if the French music from France playing on his CD player was for sale.

Ten dollars, he said, before writing down the name of one particular singer for me to remember, since the music was his own compilation of numerous artists.

The next day I was about to enter, according to Food and Wine magazine, one of the world’s best 25 markets.

As if I didn’t have enough problems keeping my wallet in my pocket, St. Lawrence Market invites one to buy. The succulent smells. Sixteen-grain bread. Thick, thick lamb and pork chops. Cheeses. Wines. Jew-elry. And much, much more among its 120 vendors.

I came away with afford-

able jewelry for my wife and a $3.50 bottle of juice.

Yet, before I even stepped inside, I ran into Uzeir Hus-kic, a former Yugoslavian citizen and retired engineer who was looking after his wife’s stall of scarves near the entrance.

But what I really saw was his book about the prospects for peace in this world. We talked for a while before I paid $12 for In The Name of Peace.

Another way to see the city is to run through it, and stop when you want. Which is what I did in the downtown core the Friday afternoon.

The Saturday morning I was back, running as the city was awakening. There were fewer sounds and peo-ple, but continued evidence of the homeless or others who appeared to be merely surviving.

Running down one street, I saw a haggard, old, long-bearded fellow pushing a wheelchair and reassuring his passenger: “I won’t steer you wrong.”

What a metaphor on life, I thought, smiling and con-tinuing my run. For we all need reassurance, now and then, that we’re headed in the right direction, wher-ever we live.

Bob Boyer of the Renfrew Lions Club talks to Miss Teen Ontario East contestants during Renfrew’s Great Downtown Garage Sale May 2. The three young ladies were spreading the word about the Teddy Bears of Hope campaign. The Eastern Ontario goal is to obtain 2,000 new or gently-used teddy bears or other stuffed animals as part of the Miss Teen International’s total campaign goal of 80,000. Donors are encouraged to submit a toonie with each bear to facilitate shipping costs. Stuffed animals can be dropped off at the Renfrew Recreation Centre before June 1. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Downtown yard sale a great eventTo the editor:

The musical talents of the St. Michaels’ band shone yet again, adding much atmosphere and putting many caring folks in our hospitable com-munity in the mood to buy many items on display on both sides of the main street during the Great Downtown Garage Sale May 2 in Renfrew.

Not only did money change hands for those selling items on tables, but also in many business establishments as well.

A well-deserved thank-you to those who orga-nized the great event, making it the huge success that our yard sale was, with the weather indeed co-operating as well.

Singer Maria Hawkins leads Queen Elizabeth School students in a rousing rendition of Taking Care of Business. The business in question is bullying at the school and Hawkins’ presentation April 24 was part of an anti-bullying campaign. Mercury photos by JOHN CARTER

Students inspired to combat bulliesJOHN CARTER

[email protected] Musician and motivator

Maria Hawkins is helping stu-dents deter bullying in their schools.

The energetic Ottawa-based entertainer returned to Queen Elizabeth Public School April 24 to reinforce an anti-bullying message to students.

Hawkins mixed music and

words of advice in an enthusi-astic presentation in support of the school’s efforts to curb bul-lying.

In the first part of her ‘Blues 4 Kids’ presentation a month earlier, Hawkins had talked to students on such topics as how to stop bullying, how to support each other, what being bullied feels like, where to go for help if you’re bullied, what rights the

bullied have and repercussions for bullies.

“We’re trying to reach both the kids being bullied and the ones doing the bullying,” she said.

Hawkins said she would return and treat the students to a concert and cake if they took her words to heart. Teachers assured her that bullying had decreased at the school, so she returned with a guitarist to treat the stu-dents to a high energy interactive concert in the gymnasium.

Furthermore, Charlie’s Res-taurant, where Hawkins played that weekend, supplied cake for the close to 300 students.

Hawkins knows all about bul-lying as she has children with disabilities who were bullied. She has also worked with children with disabilities and at-risk kids for several years. “So this pro-gram was a natural for me,” she said.

She said RCI teacher Bob Bouchard encouraged her to get involved with anti-bullying pro-grams in schools.

She has also been involved with anti-bullying programs at A.J. Charbonneau and St. John XXIII.

As well as the stage presen-tation, Hawkins does follow-up work with students, including class writing, discussions and leadership initiatives.

She is hopeful other area schools will also allow her to share her anti-bullying message with their students.

“I love this area so much,” she said.

Queen Elizabeth principal Margaret Maloney said that her students were “thoroughly enter-tained and engaged” in Hawkins’ performance and activities.

For more information on Blues 4 Kids, call Hawkins at 613-836-0047.

The Downy Yellow Violet starts to grow shortly after the snow melts from the soil. They grow, bloom and produce seed in eight to ten days and then they are gone for another year.

This plant grows in a variety of habi-tats almost contradicting one another: moist to dry, clayey to sandy, upland tolerant hardwood stands and hardwood swamps. In the Ottawa Valley they grow in sandy loam on rocky outcrops usually in clumps.

The bright yellow flowers of this perennial herb are the first to catch our eye. Closer inspection reveals brown-purple veins near the base, five unequal petals, and the two lateral petals are bearded (show dark lines on the petals). The lower lip petal protrudes from the flower centre and is spurred. The spurs are tubular, sac-like, hollow projections just below the flower to help support the petals.

The single flower is located on a short stem, hairy above the stem leaves. The above ground stems are stout, brown and tend to be woody. The plant grows from

coarse, well planted fibrous roots. The flowers may bloom at any time during May or June.

The bright green leaves of the Downy Yellow Violet are spectacular and provide an excellent background for the bright yellow flowers. The leaves at the base of the stem are usually single, and rounded to heart shaped. The stem leaves are near the top of the stem and are broadly egg-shaped to rounded and pointed at the tip. The fruits of the Downy Yellow Violet are egg-shaped, hairless to wooly white capsules: the seeds are pale, have a hard cover and are about an eighth of an inch (2.5mm) long.

Historically the flowers, roots leaves

and seeds were used in medicine. Aborig-inal people used a medicine made from the roots to ease sore throats.

The leaves, flowers and seeds are eaten by wildlife. The eastern cottontail and the white-footed mouse use the plant for food from the time the snow melts until it is too deep for the animals to dig down through the snow cover. Birds, ruffed grouse, wild turkeys, woodcock and dark-eyed juncos feed on the seeds during the months when there is no snow on the ground.

There are about eight violet species grow in Eastern Ontario. They can be found in almost any area where plants get enough moisture and sunshine.

The Hooked Spur Violet has a purple to violet-blue flower with five unequal petals and has numerous spreading stems. The Northern Blue Violet has a deep violet to pale lilac flower with five unequal petals and has a fringe of hairs along the leaf margins.

The Sweet White Violet has a white, fragrant, hairless flower with five unequal petals, the leaf stalks are red-

dish. The Northern White Violet has a white fragrant flower with five unequal petals and with red dots on the leaf stalks and flower stems.

Other species include the Kidney-leafed Violet, Wooly Blue Violet and Can-ada Violet. All have five unequal petals and are found in moist hardwood stands.

Look for violets on any walk you may take through and hardwood stand of trees. The five unequal petals and the blue, white or yellow flowers help iden-tify them as violets.

They arrive early and leave early

By LYNN JONES“There must be a million ways to save

energy, but let’s start with a hundred”. So says a poster for the Second Annual Energy Conservation Week being held in Ontario May 17 to 23.

Ho hum. Haven’t we been hearing about and promoting energy conserva-tion on and off for years now? And while it is true that there are many ways to save energy (and reasons to do so) here in On-tario we seem to have been going in the opposite direction for the last few decades - acquiring new ways to “spend” electrici-ty with electric garage door openers, rice cookers, wine coolers, patio heaters, leaf blowers, paper shredders, pencil sharp-eners, cell phone and iPod chargers, large fl at screen televisions, computers, print-ers and so on.

We’ve been getting better at spending electricity with appliances too. Shop for a new appliance and you will see mostly bigger and fancier refrigerators, wash-ers, dryers and stoves with the occasional smaller, Energy Star model tucked away in the corner. Then there are air condi-tioners - one of the biggest electricity guzzlers of all. In recent years “central air” has been added to many homes, and truckloads of room sized air condition-ers are snapped up at the fi rst onset of hot weather each spring.

Air conditioners use an enormous

amount of electricity, so much that they have shifted the occurrence of peak elec-tricity demand from winter to summer in Ontario. When I was a kid, nobody’s home or car was air conditioned. We used fans, or rolled down the windows. Now we ar-tifi cially cool our indoor environments and create large quantities of greenhouse gases and other pollutants in the process. Per capita electricity consumption has been steadily rising all over the world in recent decades. Here in Canada, we are among the largest per capita electricity consumers in the world.

Swimming against this tide is pos-sible. There are brave pioneers who have shown that it is possible to survive quite nicely on far less electricity than most households now use. But for the time be-ing, serious energy conservation is prac-ticed by a very small minority of Ontario households.

For anyone new to energy conserva-tion, there are countless ways to do it. Just type “top 10 ways to save energy” into Google and you will come up with 15 million results (really). Or you can check out the Energy Conservation Week web-site (www.energyconservationweek.ca) for 100 suggestions. This list includes a wide range of possible actions from the no-cost items like “hang my clothes out-side to dry” and “turn off lights when not in use” all the way up to “Install a

solar hot water heater”, a big ticket item requiring a lot of effort and expense.

Solar hot water heaters are a good thing! Widespread use of solar domes-tic hot water heaters could save a lot of electricity in Ontario. Water heating ac-counts for one-fi fth of the electricity bill in many households. Traditional hot wa-ter tank systems are wasteful and ineffi -cent. Solar systems are readily available and can save about half of the energy used to heat water for a typical family of four each year.

Homeowners interested in fi nding out about solar hot water heating are invited to attend a free information session co-sponsored by the Ottawa River Institute in Renfrew on May 25 at 7 p.m. The venue is the Renfrew Public Library. Financial incentives for installing a solar hot water heater will be covered in the workshop and are also clearly explained on the web-site GoSolarOntario.ca.

So yes, there are lots of ways to save energy. And solar domestic hot water heating is worth a serious look for those with the time and fi nancial resources to consider it. But the truth is, most people don’t really get interested in energy con-servation until electricity starts to cost a lot of money. That’s what we observed in 2002 when electricity prices in On-tario spiked as a result of the short-lived deregulation experiment. Ottawa River

Institute was just starting out back then and our fi rst few energy conservation workshops were full to capacity. When price caps were brought back in, atten-dance rapidly dwindled.

Experience in the State of Califor-nia also bears this out. According to the Washington Post (February 17, 2007), California has held its per capita energy consumption essentially constant since 1974, while energy use per person for the United States overall has jumped 50 percent. A combination of aggressive en-ergy conservation measures and sound government policies are responsible. The high price of electricity in California is one of the main drivers for the wide-spread adoption of conservation mea-sures there. The per kilowat hour price in California is more than double the price in wasteful states such as Alabama that consume much more electricity per capita. The per kilowatt hour price in Ontario is comparable to that in the most wasteful states. It is too bad that despite some really urgent reasons to consume less energy, most of us in Ontario don’t take it very seriously. Higher prices for electricity in the future will make us all a lot more interested in conservation. Until then it’s a hard sell.Lynn Jones is a member of the Ottawa River Institute, www.ottawariverinstitute.ca.

There are a million ways to conserve energy, so why don’t we?

Greater Madawaska council has decided against ordering a site inspection of the Calabogie MotorSports Park (CMP) until it hears whether staff feels it is warranted.

Coun. John Pratt urged coun-cil April 16 to authorize the inspection before the track opens for another season to ensure the

it is compliant with site plan regulations. “It’s just good busi-ness practice,” he said.

Reeve Peter Emon argued council should wait until com-mittee meetings in May to ask staff if they feel an inspection is needed. “I hear complaints too, but I also get people complaining we’re harassing CMP,” he said.

Need for track inspection debated

NewsNewsNewsNewsSeniors medical centre,housing options explored

JOHN [email protected] Madawaska council

has formed a committee to exam-ine the seniors’ housing options in the township.

Council also agreed April 16 to strike a committee to review the future of the township’s medical centre.

The two committees will be made up of five members each, two from council and three from the community. Anyone inter-ested in joining the committees should contact the township office by May 29.

Reeve Peter Emon said the housing committee will be tasked with looking into the feasibility of seniors’ accommodations in the township.

“Fairfields (in Eganville) has been reasonably successful,” he said. “We should explore that model.”

“There is money out there,” he added, noting that on March 26 the province announced sig-nificant new expenditures for affordable and supportive hous-ing for seniors as part of infra-structure and poverty reduction measures. “If it (funding pro-gram criteria) fits in this area, we should be aggressive in seek-ing it,” he said.

“You have to have the num-bers to make it viable,” said Coun. Karin Lehnhardt. She said there has been talk about a seniors’ housing complex in the Griffith-Matawatchan area, but there aren’t enough seniors in the area.

“Maybe they (committee) will come back and tell us we’re 10 years too soon,” said Emon. “Maybe not.”

He said he envisioned the township’s role as providing land or services and help in access-ing funding as ways to encour-age non-profit groups or private developers to develop affordable housing.

Emon said seniors’ housing is an important issue in the town-ship as its population is almost one quarter seniors and the

over-45 age group is the fastest growing. When seniors in the area decide they can no longer maintain their homes, there is little for them to rent or buy in the township, he added.

“We need to determine if we can keep our seniors living in our community longer.”

MEDICAL CENTREEmon said the township needs

advice on the future of the medi-cal centre, because it has been a “significant plus” for the com-munity since it was built in 1975. Having a doctor available there is a factor when people decide to move to the Calabogie area, he noted.

However, Dr. Max Buxton has had trouble recruiting a second doctor for the centre, even though the demand is there, he said. Therefore, the Greater Mada-waska health committee should look into attracting a nurse prac-titioner to operate out of the cen-tre as well as investigate doctor recruitment, he said.

Emon suggested the commit-tee meet with Whitewater-Brom-ley Community Health Centre officials to determine if their model is feasible in Calabogie.

The committee should also meet with Champlain Local Health Integration Network offi-cials to discuss health care ser-vice delivery options and oppor-tunities for the centre, he added.

Emon said the committee should review funding opportu-nities to upgrade the centre’s information system and make recommendations about gover-nance of the centre. The town-ship might be able to receive funding if it forms a not-for-profit group to run the centre, but rumours that Greater Mada-waska would receive a million dollars in funding if the prov-ince took it over are not true, he stressed.

He also cautioned that the medical centre is not likely to be a money maker for the munici-pality, but keeping it operating is a plus for the community.

attended the banquet, and informed everyone this year’s OPP Special Olympics Torch Run will make its way through Renfrew on Thursday, May 21.

Proceeds from the Renfrew portion of this event will go toward Special Olympics locally. The day also features an OPP versus Special Olympians bas-ketball game.

A fundraising breakfast is sched-uled at the Royal Canadian Legion Renfrew Branch 148 hall Tuesday, May

19. You may also support the Special Olympics cause by purchasing an OPP Special Olympics Torch Run t-shirt

The t-shirts cost $25 and are avail-able from the OPP.

Also saluted for their efforts at last week’s banquet were the local Special Olympics volunteers.

“There are over 14,000 volunteers registered in Ontario alone,” coach Frank Belanger said. They play a huge roll in the success of Special Olym-pics, he added.

Torch Run will make its annual trip through Renfrew Thursday, May 21

Well over 50 ladies were out to enjoy an evening of fashions and desserts at the Renfrew Golf Club.

The April 28 event was spon-sored by Rick J. Desilets Finan-cial Solutions.

Twelve models took to the run-way to show their casual attire.

Representing Douglas Moore Fashions was Carol Sulpher, Cathy Malcolm and Sue O’Neill, while Lee Sharpe, Arlene Smith and Anne MacNeil showed off the smart-casual wear of Ella’s Boutique.

Scott’s harem consisted of Kate Anderson, Katie Eady, Les-ley Murray, Kim Vandewouw and Anne Windle who modeled out-fits from the RGC golf shop.

All the participants agreed, it is wonderful to be on this side of the summer, with all the golf ahead.

The night got everyone in the mood to get out on the links. Carol Sulpher, above, models an outfit from

Mark Yandt, left, stands with GearHeads of Petawawa owner Damien McCarthy. Yandt’s bike is ready for the cross-Canada trip.

PETER [email protected]

Mark Yandt will be spending much of the summer of 2009 on the roads of Canada. He’ll know the quickest ocean-to-ocean route when he’s done.

The native of Petawawa starts a 7,500-kilometre biking journey from Victoria, B.C. June 16 with plans to arrive in St. John’s NFLD on an estimated date of Aug. 20.

Yandt is raising funds for Friends of Camp Connections (FOCC), a trip he calls XCountry 2009.

FOCC is the primary sponsor of Camp Connections, a summer camp for youth age 12-18 that is focused on giving young people a safe environment to grow and learn.

While biking through the Ottawa Val-ley, Yandt’s trek will include a stop-over in the Town of Lanark, site of Providence Point Retreat Centre which is home to Camp Connections.

Yandt has been instructors and coun-sellor at Camp Connections, and has

helped run the water ski program at the camp for the past three years.

CAMP CONNECTIONS“We are trying to raise a significant

amount of money,” Martin says, to help with tuition costs for several youth. About 90 per cent of FOCC’s total budget annu-ally ($20,000 in 2008) goes toward tuition fees for campers.

Campers have the opportunity to push themselves physically through athlet-ics and morally through dozens of team games, to overcome challenges with their peers and counsellors, and to learn how to live life to its fullest at Camp Connec-tions, Yandt noted.

Campers are taught to trust and rely on one another and for one week, are immersed in an environment that shows them how to incorporate Christian mor-als into day-to-day life.

Yandt will be flying out to Victoria from Ottawa June 15.

Each week we feature animals from the Arnprior and District Humane Society that are up for adoption.

#3247 NessaNessa was found in September on Bell Street. The one-year-old spayed female was just a kitten when brought to the shelter. She is a very pretty girl, with gorgeous markings. Nessa has grown up at the shelter, she is shy when meeting new people and will need sometime to adjust to a new home. She loves the company of other cats. She is curious and playful with them. A quiet home without small children would suit Nessa best. Once Nessa knows you she likes to be petted and will sit on your lap. If you have room in your home and heart for Nessa, please consider adopting her.

#3364 JOEYSix-month-old Joey, a grey tabby, was found with his sister living in someone’s garage. Joey is an extremely sweet little guy, loves attention, is very affectionate and friendly. He is a well socialized kitten that is easy to handle; he loves to snuggle and be held. Joey is very vocal, he likes to coo and meow and talks up a storm. Joey is playful and curious, he can be cautious in new situations but warms up quickly. He loves children, especially if they will play with him. Please consider adopting this happy-go-lucky little boy.

Supplies the shelter needs: Non clumping cat litter; Whiskas meaty selections dry cat food; liquid laundry soap; canned dog and cat food.

Pet Valu in Arnprior and Renfrew are holding a cat litter drive for the humane society on May 22, 23 and 24, all donations are appreciated.

Consider becoming a member of the Arnprior and District Humane Society for $10 single or $25 family.

AgricultureAgricultureAgricultureAgricultureA remarkable agriculture teacher impacted the lives of many

Former principal Don Whillans would give a fail-ing mark to Ontario Agriculture Minister Leona Dom-browsky on letter writing.

The same week Don Whillans passed away last month, Dombrowsky had a letter to the editor in the weekly On-tario Farmer.

She starts the letter with, “I am writing in response to the April 14, 2009 ...”

Had Dombrowsky been a student of Don Whillans and had written those words he would have emphati-cally told her not to tell the recipient of her letter that she was writing the letter ‘because they can see that’. “They can see you are writing the letter! You don’t have to point that out,” he’d tell her.

Don Whillans was my Grade 10 agriculture teacher at Eganville and District High School in 1964. He was a very good teacher. He was also the principal. I liked him. You didn’t forget things he said.

I remember more from the agriculture class than I do from the other subjects I took in high school. Of course, agriculture was a topic I knew and it interested me. Chemistry, Latin, French and algebra were like foreign subjects.

Whillans was a farm boy from Cyrville (near Ottawa) and graduated from Guelph Agricultural College with a Bachelor of Science in agriculture. For several sum-mers he worked in the Arctic as an entomologist. Ento-mology is a branch of Zoology that deals with insects and butterfl ies.

One cold afternoon in October of 1964 he took the EDHS agriculture class on a fi eld trip to show us the fi ne arts of plowing a fi eld.

We were bussed barely a mile to a fi eld outside of

Eganville where Mills Warren was driving a grey Ford-son tractor and pulling a two-furrow plow.

Warren would drive very slowly so the class could walk behind and see the furrows turned over. Every now and then Whillans would have him stop and we would examine the texture of the soil to fi nd organic matter such as decayed grasses or straw stubble.

The furrow depth of the sandy loam soil would be measured with a ruler.

Whillans showed us that if the plow went any deeper, it would bring up subsoil.

He pointed out certain parts of the plowed fi eld where bits of subsoil were showing.

We learned not to bring up subsoil –plants will grow in topsoil but not in subsoil.

Subsoil is usually a lighter shade of brown or yellow. It’s the part of soil below the depth of plowing. Farmers with clay soil refer to it as hardpan. It can be rock hard when it’s dry.

Subsoil or hardpan contains little or no humus.Keeping subsoil undisturbed is something that stuck

with me all these years—45 to be exact. Just plow the topsoil. No deeper. And that might just be fi ve inches.

I recall Whillans teaching the class how to write a let-ter correctly. It must have been part of the agriculture curriculum.

We were taught about the different parts of a letter. The date, the inside address of the person you are writ-ing, the salutation or the greeting, the body of the letter, the complementary close and the signature line.

The salutation begins with the word “Dear” and always includes the person’s last name. We were told “Dear Sir” is okay but you never write “To Whom it May Concern”.

And you never start a letter with “I am writing to you about…”. “They can see that,” he’d say.

Whenever I see a letter that starts with “I am writing this letter to you …” or, “I am writing in response..” I think of Don Whillans.

How should our provincial agriculture minister have started her letter? She could say “I take exception to the April 14…..” “There are a few mistakes in..” “The ar-ticle on…. needs a correction..”

It’s so much better, wouldn’t you say?

Have you eaten today? If you have, take a moment

and thank a farmer

Senator and retired cardiologist Wilbert Keon of the Ottawa Heart Institute receives a much-appreciated gift of appreciation from Dr. Max Buxton, chairman of the Ma-Te-Way Aquatic Centre committee. The clay-relief wall plaque, by Burnstown artist Richard Gill, depicts a healthy heart and a map of the Ottawa Valley. “We thought we would send our hearts out to you, as you have looked after our hearts,” said Buxton to the Sheenboro, Que., native. “Engineers have projected 15 or 16 years, but we’re hoping for 20,” said McLaren.

After that, it’s anyone’s guess where garbage will be headed. As McLaren puts it, the town-ship could be facing a crisis, with no place to put garbage, or embracing technology’s new answers to waste management.

Either way, the present expan-sion is of major importance to the township.

“Expansion is the only alter-native,” said McLaren.

“We looked at other alter-natives, like shipping garbage away, but the cost of tipping fees far outweighed the cost of expan-

sion ourselves.“We’re on the existing foot-

print that’s already licensed,” added McLaren, meaning there’s no need to purchase additional property.

The township’s 55 acres fea-tures 10 acres for landfill, with the remainder used as a control perimeter for any leachate.

Meanwhile, Horton has applied to the federal-provincial Infrastructure Stimulus Fund for $200,000 to recompact its cur-rent landfill.

If successful, Horton might gain three or four more years of space. Otherwise, it’s expected the landfill will be full by the summer of 2010.

Have a safe and healthyVictoria Day weekend

EnvironmentEnvironmentEnvironmentEnvironmentCatch the Green Wave: Be an Art of Being Green volunteer

The Art of Being Green Executive Planning Committee is looking for ener-getic and enthusiastic volunteers to help make the 6th annual Art of Being Green Festival a success. The Art of Being Green Festival will take place on July 10-12, 2009 at the Middleville Fairgrounds in Lanark Highlands.

Art of Being Green showcases local, provincial and national efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, engages the public on renewable energy issues and explores the significance of adaptation in our everyday lives. The Art of Being Green Festival features include a large exhibit area, vendor trade show, work-shops, interactive displays, children’s programs, entertainment and local food.

Volunteering for the Art of Being

Green Festival is a great way to build your volunteer experience, get involved in your community, meet new people, and showcase Lanark Highlands. It is also a great way for high school students to complete their Community Involvement hours that are necessary to obtain their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Over 100 volunteers are needed for various positions in the following areas: Information and/or Souvenir Booth, Greeters, Stagehands, Runners, Festival Office, “Waste Watchers”, Children’s Pro-gram Area, Parking Attendants and Traf-fic Control. Volunteers can sign-up to work the weekend of the festival and/or the week leading up to the festival. Each volunteer will receive a free Art of Being Green t-shirt and meal coupon for the

Friday night BBQ. All volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and volunteers aged 14 to 17 years must have a parent or guardian’s permission to participate. All volunteers will be required to participate in an orientation Saturday, May 23 at 2 p.m. or Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the Art of Being Green, please contact Megan Sargeant at 613-259-2398, ext. 242 or 1-800-239-4695. A volunteer information and registration package is also available online at www.artofbeing-green.com.

CommunityCommunityCommunityCommunityChartwell’s Senior Star attracts over a thousand competitors

Chartwell Seniors Housing has announced that, in celebra-tion of Chartwell’s National Appreciation of Seniors initia-tive June 16 to 18, it is encour-aging seniors to participate in the third annual Senior Star singing and musical instrument competition.

“Over 10,000 enthusiastic fans cheered on more than 1,000 participants in 71 competitions from St. John’s to Vancouver Island. Chartwell’s Senior Star contest has grown to be the larg-est celebration of seniors’ talent in Canada,” announced Brent Binions, President of Chartwell Seniors Housing REIT.

The competition is held across Canada in Seniors Cen-tre’s, theatres and Chartwell residences. It is open to anyone who is 65 and over and a Canadi-an resident. Contestants do not have to be living in a Chartwell residence.

“If people have the percep-tion that somehow talent is lost over time, the competitors in Senior Star refute that notion in the most convincing manner. Go to your local Chartwell resi-dence and ask them for a copy of the DVD from the 2008 finale, and you’ll be convinced,” said Binions.

Those wishing to compete can pick up a registration form at their local Chartwell Seniors Housing residence today, or they can visit www.chartwellreit.ca to find out more information.

At the regional competitions, contestants are given a maxi-mum of five minutes to sing a song, play an instrument, or do both, and their performance is videotaped. Musical accompani-ment is provided to singing con-testants, if required. A panel of three judges, made up of musi-cal experts, local government officials, and media representa-tives, choose the top three local contestants, each of whom will be recognized with a Senior Star trophy. The first place winners then have a chance to be one of the ten competitors in the National Final. The ten finalists are chosen from the first-place winners of the 71 Regional Com-petitions by a celebrity panel of judges, and will compete in the National Final, held at the famed Fairmont Royal York Hotel, in Toronto, Oct. 19, 2009.

Dinah Christie, Canadian entertainment icon, was the host of the National Final in 2008. “Canada applauds the courage of those talented Seniors, over

one thousand of them, who audi-tioned and vied for the honours in both the Regional Competi-tions and the Finals. They all

so heartily deserve the exuber-ant celebration they received through the Senior Star experi-ence.”

Enjoy your

town. Take a walk

today.

On April 5, our 7 year old son Connor had a stroke. Throughout this very diffi cult time we still feel truly blessed to have the support of such wonderful people and organizations within Renfrew and surrounding areas. We would like to thank all of our family, friends and neighbours for their words of encourage-ment, prayers and donations. We would like to thank the Lions Club of Renfrew, the Rotary Club of Renfrew, Renfrew County Bus Lines, Reina DeVries and the staff and customers of The Renfrew Mercury, Elaine Young and the staff of OPG Pickering Hydro and Black & Mc-Donald Contractors of Pickering for their gen-erous donations and support. A special thank you to Steve and Julie McKay who in their time of grief with the tragic death of their son Chris reached out and donated a Wii to Con-nor. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. To my colleagues and friends at St. Joseph’s High School, as well as Connor’s school, Our Lady of Fatima, I am always amazed with how gen-erous and supportive you all are. We appreci-ate everything, the gift cards, donations, and especially the heart-felt letters from the staff and the beautiful cards from the students. We would like to thank Father MacNamara and the parishioners of Our Lady of Fatima, Pas-tor Lorne Andrews and Calvary Pentecostal Church and the Calabogie Bible Church for their continued prayers for Connor. I believe medicine will make Connor better, but prayers and medicine will make miracles happen. We would like to thank the Renfrew Victoria Hos-pital Emergency staff and the Renfrew County Ambulance service for the care they gave Con-nor. We will be forever grateful to CHEO for saving Connor’s life and everything they are still doing to assist Connor in his recovery. We appreciate all you have done for us and continue to do to help us through this diffi cult time. We are very fortunate. There is a saying that I think of when I think of all the love and support we have received. ”When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show it that you have a thousand reasons to smile.”

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
