by David WaxmanSeattle Washington:A clinical study on a leading acid re ux pill shows that its key ingredient relieves digestive symp-toms while suppressing the in ammation that con-tributes to premature aging in men and women.

And, if consumer sales are any indication of a product’s e ectiveness, this ‘acid re ux pill turned anti-aging phenomenon’ is nothing short of a miracle.

Sold under the brand name AloeCure, it was already backed by clinical data documenting its ability to provide all day and night relief from heartburn, acid re ux, constipation, irritable bow-el, gas, bloating, and more.

But soon doctors started reporting some incred-ible results…

“With AloeCure, my patients started reporting less joint pain, more energy, better sleep, stronger immune systems… even less stress and better skin, hair, and nails” explains Dr. Liza Leal; a leading integrative health specialist and company spokes-person.

AloeCure contains an active ingredient that helps improve digestion by acting as a natural acid-bu er that improves the pH balance of your stomach.

Scientists now believe that this acid imbal-ance is what contributes to painful in ammation throughout the rest of the body.

The daily allowance of AloeCure has shown to calm this in ammation which is why AloeCure is so e ective.

Relieving other stressful symptoms related to GI health like pain, bloating, fatigue, cramping, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.

Now, backed with new clinical studies, Aloe-Cure is being recommended by doctors every-where to help improve digestion, calm painful in ammation, soothe joint pain, and even reduce the appearance of wrinkles – helping patients to look and feel decades younger.

FIX YOUR GUT & FIGHT INFLAMMATION

Since hitting the market, sales for AloeCure have taken o and there are some very good rea-sons why.

To start, the clinical studies have been impres-sive. Participants taking the active ingredient in AloeCure saw a stunning 100% improvement in digestive symptoms, which includes fast and last-ing relief from re ux.

Users also experienced higher energy levels and endurance, relief from chronic discomfort and better sleep. Some even reported healthier looking skin, hair, and nails.

A healthy gut is the key to a reducing swell-

ing and in ammation that can wreak havoc on the human body. Doctors say this is why AloeCure works on so many aspects of your health.

AloeCure’s active ingredient is made from the healing compound found in Aloe vera. It is both safe and healthy. There are also no known side e ects.

Scientists believe that it helps improve diges-tive and immune health by acting as a natural acid-bu er that improves the pH balance of your stomach.

Research has shown that this acid imbalance contributes to painful in ammation throughout your entire body and is why AloeCure seems to be so e ective.

EXCITING RESULTS FROM PATIENTSTo date over 5 million bottles of AloeCure have

been sold, and the community seeking non-phar-ma therapy for their GI health continues to grow.

According to Dr. Leal, her patients are ab-solutely thrilled with their results and are often shocked by how fast it works.

“For the rst time in years, they are free from concerns about their digestion and almost every other aspect of their health,” says Dr. Leal, “and I recommend it to everyone who wants to improve GI health without resorting to drugs, surgery, or OTC medications.”

“I was always in ‘indigestion hell.’ Doctors put me on all sorts of antacid remedies. Nothing worked. Dr. Leal recommended I try AloeCure. And something remarkable happened… Not only were all the issues I had with my stomach gone - completely gone – but I felt less joint pain and I was able to actually sleep through the night.”

With so much positive feedback, it’s easy to see why the community of believers is growing and sales for the new pill are soaring.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND ALOECUREAloeCure is a pill that’s taken just once daily.

The pill is small. Easy to swallow. There are no harmful side e ects and it does not require a pre-scription.

The active ingredient is a rare Aloe Vera com-ponent known as acemannan.

Made from of 100% organic Aloe Vera, Aloe-Cure uses a proprietary process that results in the highest quality, most bio-available levels of ace-mannan known to exist.

According to Dr. Leal and several of her col-leagues, improving the pH balance of your stomach and restoring gut health is the key to revitalizing your entire body.

When your digestive system isn’t healthy, it causes unwanted stress on your immune system,

which results in in ammation in the rest of the body.

The recommended daily allowance of ace-mannan in AloeCure has been proven to support digestive health, and calm painful in ammation without side e ects or drugs.

This would explain why so many users are ex-periencing impressive results so quickly.

REVITALIZE YOUR ENTIRE BODYWith daily use, AloeCure helps users look and

feel decades younger and defend against some of the painful in ammation that accompanies aging and can make life hard.

By bu ering stomach acid and restoring gut health, AloeCure calms painful in ammation and will help improve digestion… soothe aching joints… reduce the appearance of wrinkles and help restore hair and nails … manage cholester-ol and oxidative stress… and improve sleep and brain function… without side e ects or expense.

Readers can now reclaim their energy, vitali-ty, and youth regardless of age or current level of health.

very spring people start planningtheir vegetable garden. The timingmust be perfect. You can’t plant too

early, because a late frost could wipe outseedlings. You can’t plant too late since thebuds may not have time to take root andproduce a crop. Without the protection ofwater and a strong grassroots system, mostvegetables can’t survive a hot summer.

Oddly enough, great ideas are the same. Ifyou share an idea too early without acommunity’s support, it gets lost in theshuffle. If you lobby for an idea no one knowsabout—even something that would helpeveryone—lack of interest may cause theidea to wilt and die.

How do great ideas thrive? They needgrassroots support.

Nebraska’s public power districts andelectric cooperatives are looking out for you, making sure you have affordable, reliable, and safe electricity. Sometimes state orfederal laws and regulations threaten this, sowe lobby hard on your behalf. But withoutyour support, our ideas often don’t reach theright ears.

No matter how loudly we speak out on howlegislation or an agency rule may impactelectric bills, our voice dims in comparison toone of the most untapped resources in ourcommunity—YOU. We’re a statewideassociation—YOU are a voter. We’re workinghard on your behalf, but your support helpsideas take root and survive.

Nebraska’s public power districts andelectric cooperatives are facing growinguncertainty over the future of America'senergy policy. As we focus our efforts toensure Nebraska continues to provideaffordable, reliable, and safe electric power,we are turning to the member-owners forhelp.

No one understands your electric billbetter than you; and the NREA GrassrootsInitiative provides direct communicationbetween elected officials and those they areelected to represent.

All member-owners are encouraged to takean active role in the Grassroots Initiativeand to take advantage of the opportunitiespresented. Rather than a single voice, the

Grassroots Initiative will mobilize amovement of Nebraskans concerned aboutenergy issues and affordable electric rates. With your active involvement, we can be apowerful voice in Lincoln and Washington.

As Congress and the State Legislaturecontinue to debate energy issues, we all havea responsibility to ensure the concerns ofelectric providers and consumers are heardby our representatives. Now is a historicaltime for Nebraska's electrical industry, andwe must work together to ensure electedofficials understand our issues and abalanced debate occurs. By increasing thedialog between representatives andconstituents, the Grassroots Initiative willbuild strong relationships with policymakers, increase education of the issues, andraise awareness of the concerns of ruralAmerica.

Electric utilities can’t go it alone. CEOsand utility boards are doing everything theycan to keep electric costs affordable, and theydo a great job of it. But there are thingsoutside their control, like regulations thataffect prices and electric service. By havinga strong political action plan and an engagedmembership, each utility can help drivethese concerns home. And when lawmakershear from the folks—voters—back home, they listen.

nly three ingredients arenecessary: flour, water andsalt. That’s all it takes to

craft a food that’s been around for asmany as 30,000 years. Whether it’smixed into flat cakes, spread out ona flat rock and baked over an openfire; or mixed with foam skimmedfrom beer to make a lighter bread; orleavened with a sourdough starter, bread is one of the oldest types ofman-made food.

If you ask anyone who’s smelled itbaking, has cut off a slice when it’shot from the oven and slathered itwith butter, bread is not only theoldest food but one of the best. Justask Caleb Nihira.

North Fork Bread CompanyNihira operates North Fork BreadCompany in Norfolk, Nebraska. When Norfolk was founded in 1868,a misspelling by postal officialschanged the name of the city ForkCity or Nor’fork—named for theNorth Fork of the river—to Norfolk.Nihira has capitalized on this error, naming his bread company, theNorth Fork Bread Company, afterthis earlier spelling. His newbusiness hearkens back to the daysof Norfolk’s early history when breadwas baked over a hearth fire byevery pioneer family around.

Unlike large bread companieswhich rely on assembly-lineprocesses, Nihira shapes every loafhe bakes by hand, in the style ofartisans utilizing centuries oldtechniques. Using only flour, water, salt and a sourdough starter, Nihira’snaturally-leavened bread goesthrough a three-day process as heprepares the mix and mixes thedough. The dough is then stretchedand folded every half hour, six timesover, and set to rise overnight in acold fermentation process. After that,it’s cut, shaped and baked in a brickoven.

This cold fermentation processresults in a product with more flavorand nutritional properties, Nihirasaid.

Nihira began North Fork BreadCompany as a home bakery, selling

his loaves at farmers’ markets. Theflavor in his breads is instantlyrecognizable as being authentic.Soon his customers were searchingout Nihira’s rich tasting,preservative-free breads, leading thebaker to open a commercial kitchenand place his breads at areasupermarkets.

“Everyone says they lovehomemade bread and the reason isbecause of the flavor,” Nihira said.“It’s primal. It’s one of—if not theoldest—form of food. Human beingshave a natural desire for bread.”

In addition, breads made throughthe sourdough process result in aproduct with less gluten, according toNihira. Those with an intolerance towheat may want to give Nihira’sbread a try, he said.

In the future, Nihira plans to buildrelationships with area farmers toestablish a supply of bakingingredients. In that way, customerswould not only be purchasingNihira’s bread, but also supportingarea farmers by buying the wheat, eggs, milk and butter utilized by theNorth Fork Bread Company.

White Mulberry Bakery“People used to go to the grocerystore, to the butcher and the bakerfor real food. They were willing tomake the effort,” said ElizabethGeary. She has found the same thinghappening today. Just as shopperssearch out Caleb Nihira’s hand-crafted breads, they also stop by theWhite Mulberry Bakery.

Elizabeth Geary has been themastermind behind the bakery, alsolocated in Norfolk, Nebraska.Opening a bakery was alwaysGeary’s dream. In fact, it was postedon her bucket list for “sometime” inher future. When that “sometime”came near, she approached her sister,Chelsea Hall, and asked if she’d liketo join Geary in the endeavor. Halldidn’t have to think about it. Theyopened for business in June of 2017.

Geary had spent a number of yearsin restaurant management, whilebaking out of her home after hours, perfecting her recipes. Once Hall andGeary both moved back to theirhometown, Geary’s husbandpurchased a retail businessdowntown. One side of the buildingdidn’t have a tenant. It was a perfectspot for a bakery, with a little counterand a small kitchen. But thebusiness hasn’t stayed small for long.

The sisters began by baking cakes, muffins and cookies.

“Smells are free,” they said tovisitors. “No calories.”

It’s little wonder then that throughword of mouth and therecommendations of satisfiedcustomers, interest in their bakedgoods grew as quickly as their list oforders. As their business expanded,so has their menu. As a result, thesisters are looking ahead to alocation with a bigger kitchen. In themeantime, they are busy.

“We’re sticklers that all our food isfrom scratch,” Geary said. “We makeour own caramel, raspberry sauceand ice cream. It’s real food. We’rereally picky about brands ofingredients; we’re conscientiousabout that.”

If you want a cake to tasteamazing, with real butter, realvanilla and real chocolate, the sisterssaid, White Mulberry Bakery is theplace to shop.

“We have lots of regulars,” Gearysaid. “If you like to make peoplehappy, this is the right business.”

The bakery holds limited seating.Even so, customers stop by for adrink, such as hot chocolate or coffee,to enjoy with a sweet treat. They aretempted to buy a dozen more to takehome: sweet rolls, pastries, muffins, cookies, bars, cupcakes, dinner rollsand a small bread line, all made fromscratch.

Specialty baked items includedecorated birthday and weddingcakes, desserts and such tasty treatsas cherry streusel rolls; Babka, aCzech yeast cake; egg and butter richbrioches; or savory sesame and chiveChallah, a braided bread.

Customers from both CornhuskerPublic Power District based inColumbus, Nebraska, and ElkhornRural Public Power District based inBattle Creek, Nebraska, are able totake advantage of the tasty breadsand sweets available at the twoNorfolk bakeries. Elkhorn consumersresiding in Madison, Antelope,Pierce, Boone, Stanton and Plattecounties live near the Norfolkbakeries, while Cornhuskerconsumers residing in Colfax andPlatte counties could be especiallydrawn to the Clarkson Bakery.

While the youngsters—North ForkBakery and White MulberryBakery—are working to build areputation, the Clarkson Bakery, inits adulthood, relies on years oftradition to retain its consumer base.

Clarkson BakeryKim and Russell Scott purchased thewell-known Clarkson Bakery eightyears ago from her aunt and uncleSharon and Bob Cerv. They wereliving in a suburb of Kansas City,Kansas, at the time. Kim wasattracted to the area where she grewup because she wanted to live closerto her niece.

Russell was at first astounded hiswife would want to buy a bakery in atown of only 600. A travelingbusinessman, he soon learned it wasa wise choice. As he made stops onhis routes, he sometimes mentionedthat he and his wife were the newowners of the Clarkson Bakery. Theresponse was always the same: “The

Clarkson Bakery! Did you bring mesome kolaches?”

Now Russell understands thatwhen they purchased the ClarksonBakery they purchased its name andreputation, Kim said. Customersknow that the breads they buy thereare made at the bakery and containno preservatives.

“That sets us apart,” Kim Scottsaid. “There are hardly any breadsthat are homemade,” especially notin supermarkets.

What also sets the ClarksonBakery apart are its ethnic bakedgoods: kolaches (rounds of sweetdough with fruit-filled centers), hornrolls (similar to crescent rolls),rolicky (crescent-shaped sweets),koblihy (filled and fried doughnuts),and houska (a braided Christmasbread).

The bakers at Clarkson Bakeryalso make lots of rye bread, alongwith mountains of white bread, dinner rolls, muffins, coffee cakesand frosted sweet rolls: regular

doughnuts, long johns, bismarcksand apple fritters.

To get all this baking done, bakersarrive in shifts. Some work overnight, arriving at 7 p.m. or midnightand work until the sun comes up.During the Thanksgiving holiday, employees will work 16 to 18 hoursstraight to get the orders filled. Someof the bakery’s 20 employees aredescribed by Scott as “older gals.”

“They like coming to work,” shesaid. “They’re troopers. They’re myrocks.”

They’re all well aware of the sloganwritten on the wall in Czech behindthe front counter: Without workthere is no kolache.

The bakery opens for business at 6a.m., attracting the regular “coffeeguys.” In former days, the workers inthe kitchen washed 80 coffee cupseach day; today that number is closerto 25 as those who work out of towngrab a cup of coffee and a sweet rollto go. The largest percentage of salesgo out of town.

After the baked goods are mixed, formed, left to rise, baked, cooled, frosted, packaged, labeled andinvoiced, drivers deliver them tomore than 20 locations within a 50-mile radius of Clarkson, fillingstanding orders.

Among the deliveries are trays ofrolls or cookies for monthly meetings, open houses, and parties, along withcustomer appreciation gifts andother gifts for all occasions.

Marketing is primarily word ofmouth as the bakery’s reputation hasalready been built.

It doesn’t take long for customersof North Fork Bread Company, WhiteMulberry Bakery or ClarksonBakery to learn of their reputationsfor fine, baked good. All originatingwith the basic ingredients: flour, water and salt, and ending up with awhole lot of flavor.

oe wants to save money. Hehas been approached by asalesman to buy a solar panel

or a wind turbine. The salesmanassures Joe he will “save money onhis electric bill” and “make moneyselling extra electricity to thecooperative or public power district.”Should Joe invest?

The answer depends on howdedicated Joe is to the idea ofrenewable energy. There are severalfactors including: costs, energy prices, and how long it would take to pay-back Joe’s investment. Before Joeinvests, he should talk to hiselectricity provider about his options.

Nebraska law provides amechanism to allow customers togenerate their own electricity and sellexcess generation back to the utility. It is called net metering.Unfortunately, net metering is muchmore complicated than just buyingand selling electricity.

Imagine an electric meter that rollsforward when Joe is buying electricityfrom the utility and then reverses

when Joe’s wind turbine producesmore than he uses. So, if Joe uses1,000-kilowatt hours (kW) ofelectricity and generates 1,000 kWh’sof electricity in a month, his netenergy use at the end of the monthwould be zero. The energy charge onJoe’s bill would be zero for thatmonth.

For Joe’s electric utility thisexchange is far more complicated. Inreality, Joe’s renewable generationunit will not generate at a constantrate throughout the month. It is notlikely to generate electricity to matchactual electric usage needs, butrather, it will be generating when thesun is shining or the wind is blowing.Without a battery for storage, electricity needs to be usedsimultaneously from its moment ofgeneration. The wind tends to blowmore over the evening hours, and thesun shines during the daytime hoursonly, yet we all require someelectricity around the clock.Conversely, it may be very windy at3:00 a.m. and the generator may be

JOne of the mostcontroversial andleast understoodenergy issuestoday is netmetering.

producing maximum electricity, butmost people probably do not have ahigh energy demand at this time.

As Joe produces electricity, themeter theoretically runs in reverse. While this is occurring, the utility iscompensating Joe at the retail valueof that electricity when the utilitycould buy those kilowatts atwholesale rates. If Joe generates morethan he uses in any given month, theutility will then compensate him at awholesale rate for that excess energy.

This leads to a discussion of thesubsidization of net meteringcustomers by customers that do notnet meter. At the end of the month, anet metering customer may not havean energy bill to pay, but they did usethe utility infrastructure to bothreceive and deliver electricity. Theygenerated electricity, and thatelectricity flowed over electric linesand power poles, the utility provideda continuous supply of electricity tothe home when Joe was not able togenerate electricity, and utility staffaccounted for this transaction and

kept the lights on throughout themonth. This all has a cost, and if theutility is not fully capturing thesecosts in their fixed customer chargeson the utility bill, then a net meteringcustomer may be avoiding their “fairshare” of those fixed costs. Since yourpublic power utility is not-for-profit,those costs have to be recoveredthrough the rates paid by every othercustomer.

Nebraska’s law requires electricutilities to offer net metering to theircustomers. Enjoying the benefits ofproducing your own electricity whilesimultaneously calling on yourelectric utility to be prepared toimmediately fill in the gaps, howeverhas costs. As more customers look togenerate their own electricity, theimpact of the subsidization of netmetering customers by those who donot participate will grow. Customerswill be buying less kilowatt hours butstill require reliable electricity aroundthe clock. As this occurs, utilities mayneed to take a close look at their ratesand will have to adjust the fixed

charges within their billing methodsto ensure everyone pays their fairshare and that customers who cannotafford, or chose not to install theirown personal generation, are notfooting the bill of net meteredcustomers.

We encourage all those thinkingabout a renewable energy system towork with their local electric providerto make sure that the system theychoose meets their expectations.

Rural Electric Nebraskan12

hen has being in “hotwater” ever been a goodthing? If you have a heat

pump water heater, it is a greatthing!

According to the 2015 CustomerAppliance Saturation Survey ofNebraska’s residential customers, more than half of Nebraska homesuse electricity to heat domestic hotwater. When it comes to energy usein homes, after space conditioning, water heating is the second biggestconsumer of energy and accounts forabout 13 to 18 percent of total energyused in homes. By using heat pumptechnology, energy for water heatingcan be cut by 50 to 80 percent. Thatis because heat pump water heatersuse electricity to move heat into theirstorage tank instead of generatingheat directly.

Heat pump water heaters come ina variety of configurations. Mostoften, they are a stand-alone unitthat resides in a home’s utility room. However, other designs employ theirown outdoor compressor/evaporatorcoil, integrate with an air-source orgeothermal heat pump system orhave their own geothermal system.

How do they work? The commonstand-alone type operates like arefrigerator in reverse. While arefrigerator pulls heat from insideitself and dumps it into thesurrounding room, a stand-alone air-source heat pump water heater pullsheat from the surrounding air andmoves it into a storage tank to heatwater.

Stand-alone heat pump waterheaters require installation inlocations that remain between 40 to90 degrees Fahrenheit and provide atleast 1,000 cubic feet of air spacearound the unit. Cool exhaust air canbe exhausted to the room oroutdoors. Installation in spaces withexcess heat, such as furnace rooms, works best. Heat pump waterheaters will not operate efficiently ina cold space, as they tend to coolareas they are in.

Heat pump water heater systemstypically have higher initial coststhan conventional storage waterheaters. A stand-alone, 50-gallonheat pump water heater sells formore than $1,000, with otherconfigurations costing even more. Bycomparison, conventional electric hotwater heaters start closer to $400.However, according to the EnergyStar website, a heat pump waterheater can save a household of fourpeople around $330 a year on theirelectric bill. That adds up to a netsavings of more than $3,300 over the13-year life of a typical heat pumpwater heater.

Keep in mind that a stand-aloneheat pump water heater is going toremove heat and lower thetemperature of the room where it isinstalled. While it may seem counter-intuitive to locate it in a space youalready pay to heat, there are manyother sources of heat in the home toinclude solar gain through windowsas well as heat from cooking

equipment and other appliances.Often, a room with a clothes dryer ora utility room with a furnace is anideal location. During the coolingseason, heat pump water heatershelp remove excess heat andhumidity that an air-conditioningsystem would remove anyway. Thecumulative effect is energy savingswhile heating and cooling your home,as well as creating hot water.

Another consideration is that heatpump water heaters have a slowrecovery rate. This is why largerunits and/or backup electric heatingelements often make sense for homeswith higher hot water consumption.

Finally, check with your localelectric utility to see if you areeligible for an EnergyWise heatpump water heater incentivestarting at $200 per qualifying unitor a low-interest loan by upgrading. They also have additional ideas onother energy-saving improvementsthat make getting into hot water agreat thing!

By Patrick Pope NPPD PRESIDENT & CEO

The R-Project is an NPPD initiative which seeks to construct a 345,000-volt transmission line from Gerald Gentleman Station near Sutherland to an existing substation east of Thedford. This new line will proceed east and connect to a substation to be sited in Holt County. The project will bene t Nebraskans by:

NEEDED TO SERVE NEBRASKA

Enhancing reliability of Nebraska’s electric transmission system

Relieving congestion on existing lines within the transmission system

Supporting renewable energy projects — if approved at the local level

R-PROJECT = RELIABLE SERVICE

NEEDED TO ENSURE REGIONAL RELIABILITYNPPD is a member of the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), a non-pro t regional transmission organization located in the central part of the United States. SPP is regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and is charged with ensuring customers in the region receive reliable power, adequate transmission infrastructure and competitively priced electricity. Together with their members, like NPPD, SPP coordinates the ow of electricity across more than 65,000 miles of high-voltage lines spanning 14 states. The R-Project will complement and strengthen this system, while adding to the dependable delivery of power throughout Nebraska.

SouthwestPower Pool

I am often asked why the Nebraska Public Power District needs to build a high-voltage transmission line through the center of the state. I hope the information on these pages helps answer that question.

PROVIDING POWER WHEN AND WHERE IT’S NEEDED MOST

The American Burying Beetle is a federally listed endangered species that lives in the Nebraska Sandhills. R-Project construction and maintenance will affect the beetle; therefore, in order to comply with the Endangered Species Act, NPPD applied for an Incidental Take Permit (Permit) from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

As part of the application process, NPPD prepared a Habitat Conservation Plan (Plan) outlining actions that would be taken to avoid, minimize and mitigate impacts on the beetle, as well as several other endangered or threatened species that the project may affect. Another species of high interest in Nebraska is the whooping crane. Included in the Plan is analysis that shows the likelihood of taking of a crane falls below the threshold that would merit applying for a take permit. However, since the possibility of a take is not zero, NPPD agreed to implement measures to protect the cranes. For example, NPPD will spend more than $1 million on whooping crane conservation by installing bird ight diverters on portions of the R-Project line and NPPD’s existing transmission system. The diverters help to make the line more visible to birds.

PROTECTING SANDHILLS’ SPECIES AND HABITATS

PROTECTING THEENVIRONMENT

Nebraska’s weather is often unpredictable. The R-Project aims to provide power path redundancy that helps mitigate the effects of extreme conditions. For example, during the 2012 drought, electric loads caused by increased irrigation grew to the point where the transmission system was at full capacity and nearing failure. In order to protect the state’s grid, NPPD was forced to take immediate action by interrupting some customers’ service. Previously, an ice storm affecting some of the same areas destroyed or damaged nearly 1,400 transmission structures and left more than 42,000 Nebraskans without power for weeks. Although this occurred between Christmas 2006 and New Year’s Day, the grid was not fully operational until May of 2007. It is these types of devasting weather events that call for a solution which will ensure greater reliability when and where it is needed most.

R-Project Study Area

Region where electric service was impacted in 2012 due to high irrigation load and extreme heat.

Region impacted during the 2006-2007 ice storm.

Existing Transmission Lines

The landscape of the Sandhills is truly unique. Over the years, NPPD has built and continues to operate approximately 500 miles of transmission lines in this region. Just as they’ve partnered with landowners, local agencies and restoration experts in the past, our engineering and environmental teams have identi ed low-impact methods to use as the R-Project is constructed. They’ve made it a goal to minimize impact and restore property to as close to the original state as possible. NPPD Environmental Restoration Specialist Emma Barnett explains why:

Q. Why is restoration important? A. Promptly stabilizing a site ultimately returns much of the ecological, social and economic function, whether that be for ranching, wildlife habitat or agriculture. Restoration is about doing the right thing for the communities – those of plants and wildlife and, most importantly, people.

Q. What is NPPD’s restoration process? A. First, NPPD undertakes a thorough public planning process for line routing and access selection that attempts to avoid negative effects to sensitive sites. However, it must be recognized that not all potential impacts can be avoided. Thus, we employ construction techniques that help minimize ground disturbance and the need for site restoration. When restoration needs are identi ed, NPPD works closely with landowners and other agencies to create a plan which includes potential restoration techniques that may be employed across the diverse landscape. We continue to work with each landowner to address site-speci c plant communities, soils and other needs until our efforts are successful.

he approach of spring hasmany gardeners turning theirattention to planting plans,

but if your goal is energy efficiency, landscaping is an approach that canbeautify your home and help youcontrol future energy costs for yearsto come.

According to researchers at theDepartment of Energy’s NationalRenewable Energy Laboratory, carefully positioned trees placedaround a home can save as much as25 percent of household energyconsumption for heating and cooling. That’s because research has shownthat summer air temperatures intree-shaded neighborhoods can bethree to six degrees cooler thantreeless areas.

Meet Your MicroclimateFor years, gardeners have used theU.S. Department of Agriculture’sHardiness Zones as guidelines forplant stock selection, seasonalcultivation and projected harvesting.Understanding the impact of nearbyvegetation, topography and soilscience will help you know your yardbetter, providing more flexibility forlandscape planning and potentiallymore options for using plants tocontrol energy costs.

Other factors influencingmicroclimate are the duration andintensity of sunlight over areasconsidered for planting, proximity totopographic or vegetative windbreaks or nearby wooded areas, which might regulate localtemperatures by several degrees.

Trees at the TopNo matter how much you love trees,

you will want to plant them at adistance. Too close to foundations, pavement, plumbing and rootsystems or maturing branches candamage foundations or roofs.

Planted in the right place, withinfive to 10 years, a fast-growing shadetree can reduce outside airtemperatures near walls and roofs byas much as six degrees Fahrenheiton sunny days. Surface temperaturesimmediately under the canopy of amature shade tree can be up to 25degrees cooler than surroundingshingles or siding exposed to directsunlight.

According to the Department ofEnergy, deciduous trees—those thatlose their leaves in autumn—aregreat options for seasonal summershade. Tall varieties planted to thesouth of a home can help diffusesunlight, providing roof shading.

trees can be planted near exposedwest-facing windows to help shadehomes on sultry summer afternoons.Mass plantings of evergreensselected for their adaptability toregional growing conditions can beplanted further away on a north ornorthwestern section of a yard toform a windbreak, shielding thehome from frigid winter winds.

Deciduous trees with high, spreading crowns (i.e., leaves andbranches) can be planted to thesouth of your home to providemaximum summertime roof shading.Trees with crowns lower to theground are more appropriate to thewest, where shade is needed fromlower afternoon sun angles. Treesshould not be planted on thesouthern sides of solar-heated homesin cold climates, because thebranches of these deciduous treeswill block some winter sun.

Using shade effectively requiresyou to know the size, shape andlocation of the moving shadow thatyour shading device casts. Also, homes in cool regions may neveroverheat and may not requireshading. Therefore, you need to knowwhat landscape shade strategies willwork best in your regional climate

and your microclimate.Trees are available in the

appropriate sizes, densities andshapes for almost any shadeapplication. To block solar heat in thesummer but let much of it in duringthe winter, use deciduous trees. Toprovide continuous shade or to blockheavy winds, use dense evergreentrees or shrubs.

Although a slow-growing tree mayrequire many years of growth beforeit shades your roof, it will generallylive longer than a fast-growing tree. Also, because slow-growing treesoften have deeper roots and stronger

branches, they are less prone tobreakage by windstorms or heavysnow.

Trees, shrubs and groundcoverplants can also shade the ground andpavement around the home. Thisreduces heat radiation and cools theair before it reaches your home'swalls and windows. Use a large bushor row of shrubs to shade a patio ordriveway. Plant a hedge to shade asidewalk. Build a trellis for climbingvines to shade a patio area.

To ensure lasting performance ofenergy-saving landscaping, use plantspecies that are adapted to the localclimate. Native species are best, asthey require little maintenance onceestablished and avoid the dangers ofinvasive species.

Properly selected, placed andmaintained landscaping can provideexcellent wind protection, orwindbreaks, which will reduceheating costs considerably.Furthermore, the benefits from thesewindbreaks will increase as the treesand shrubs mature.

n the past, the ability to easilycontrol lights within the homehas been fairly rudimentary. You

flipped a switch on or off. Perhapsyou had a dimmer switch. To turnlights on when you were on vacation, you plugged a lamp into a gadgetwith a dial and it turned the lamp onand off. But today, consumers havemore options than ever before.

The growing use of LED bulbs andthe proliferation of smartphones andWi-Fi have brought lighting optionsto a new level. In addition to usingless energy, many LEDs can becontrolled from a smartphone app, making the LED more of a consumerelectronic than a light bulb.

When shopping for new LEDs, youessentially have two options.

A less expensive LED still offerslonger life, lower energy use and willwork for most fixtures. However, consumers with older dimmerswitches often find that they mustreplace switches to work with newerLEDs.

The second and more expensive

option is a “connected” LED. TheseLEDs offer features like controllinglights remotely from a smartphoneapp or via voice control through anin-home speaker. They can also beconnected to a home security systemor dimmed to enhance entertaining. Connected LEDs require a centralcontroller or hub, like Amazon’sAlexa or Apple HomeKit. The hubcan control other smart devices andbecome the center of a smart homesystem.

Consumers can choose from avariety of manufacturers whenpurchasing connected LEDs. Some

bulbs are compatible with differenthubs or systems, but if you’replanning a major overhaul to yourhome lighting, it’s best to buy onebrand and stick with it.

Smart lighting options aren’tnecessarily about saving energy, butif they can help you remember toturn the light off when you are not ina room, then a small amount ofenergy savings can be achieved.

As technology continues toadvance, more smart home productswill become available. Many of theseproducts will include features thatfocus on home security and quality oflife.

If you’re interested in smarttechnologies for your home, the keywill be to research your options andunderstand how the system workswith the other devices within yourhome.

SAFETY BRIEFS

Don’t overload your electric circuitsount how many things inyour living room need power. It likely includes a TV, DVR,

cable and/or satellite box, a gamesystem, lamps, maybe a computer, speakers…so many things that thereis probably at least one power stripbeing used to get power to everything.Older homes were not designed tohandle all of the electrical needs thatexist today, and overloaded outlets andpower strips can result in fires, costlydamage, and the loss of life.

Molly Hall, executive director of theSafe Electricity program explains,“Many older homes were just not builtfor all of the electrical needs that wehave today. That is why it is soimportant to make sure electricoutlets are not overloaded.”

According to the U.S. FireAdministration, electrical fires inhomes claim 280 lives every year, injure 1,000 more, and cause over onebillion dollars in damage.

That is why the Safe Electricityprogram is reminding consumers to becareful not to overload their outlets. Tohelp ensure the safety of your homeand family, make sure that you:

• Do not plug more than one major

appliance into an outlet at a time.• If an outlet is not working, have

an electrician check it out. It may bean indicator of unsafe wiring.

• Have a professional install moreoutlets on the proper circuits wherethey are needed.

• Check for loose-fitting plugs.Replace missing or broken wall platesso wiring and components are notexposed.

• Make sure there is an escape planand that all members of thehousehold practice it often.

It can be very tempting to addanother plug to an outlet or powerstrip, but fight the urge to find waysto plug additional devices into anoutlet. As an alternative, unplug adevice—or two—before plugging in anew one.Source: Safe Electricty.org.

: I’m seeing a lot of ads lately forelectric lawn mowers. I want to

save money and help theenvironment, but from what I’veheard, a lot of electric mowers can beunderpowered, and the cordless oneslose their battery charge too quickly. Is it worth making the switch from agas mower to an electric mower?

: Until recently, corded andcordless electric mowers tended

to be underpowered. For cordlessmowers, this fact was made worse bytheir sub-par battery life.

But today, with those problemslargely solved, the best electricmowers have the power and batterylife to keep pace with a gas mower, depending on the size of your lawn.

A cordless, electric mower with alarge 56-volt battery can run for about

one hour. Plug-in electric mowersdon’t have this limitation, but using along electrical cord can be challenging.

Quality electric mowers, especiallythe cordless, rechargeable ones, tendto cost twice as much as a newequivalent gas model. But you canrecoup some of the expense withcheaper operating costs, sinceelectricity is a less expensive fuel thangas, and electric engines generallyrequire less maintenance than gasengines.

Another important costconsideration is that rechargeablebatteries typically need to be replacedafter three to five years. The costsavings also depend on the size of yourlot. A small lot uses less gas, so fuelcost savings are less significant.

You can save a significant amountof money on purchase price with a

corded mower, if you don’t mind thehassle of navigating around the cord.

There are additional benefits ofelectric mowers besides lower fuel andmaintenance costs. Electric mowersare much quieter than gas mowers, and they start instantly. Electricmowers produce less tailpipeemissions, but the overallenvironmental impact depends onhow the electricity you’re using (tocharge the mower) is generated. Theenvironmental benefits will be greaterif the electricity is generated fromrenewable energy sources.

Given all these considerations, myadvice is to weigh your priorities. Ifyou are looking to buy new, have asmall- to mid-size lot, prioritizeenvironmental concerns and don’tmind navigating a cord or rechargingbatteries, an electric mower could bethe right choice for you.

If you don’t mind the noise, maintenance and other hassles of agas mower, have a large lot and prefernot to invest in the upfront purchaseprice, a gas mower may be a betteroption.

There’s also a third choice. If yourgoals are to save money and hasslewhile protecting the environment, youcan minimize your need for a mower,or get rid of the need completely.

If you’re willing to keep your lawnmowed regularly and don’t mindbreaking a sweat, consider a manualreel mower. Some models are moreeffective than you might think, andthey’re far less expensive and requirelittle maintenance or storage space.

The most dramatic step you couldtake is replacing your lawncompletely, perhaps with water-efficient landscaping, a rock garden, avegetable garden or even an artificiallawn. This could dramatically cut yourwater bill and the environmentalimpact of a lawn.

Any change you make, whether inmowing or landscaping, will require alittle research. But it’s great to knowthe option of an electric mower ismore viable than ever!
