North Myrtle Beach City CouncilBob Cavanaugh, CouncilmanBudget Retreat for 2016 Fiscal Year BudgetThe current budget is expected to be passed in June for fiscalyear 2016. This is great news as it is expected there will be noincrease in city property or business taxes. Water and sewercharges will increase a couple of cents per thousand gallons.

Our debt situation is excellent as most bonds are almost paidoff. The Aquatics & Fitness Center and Sports Park bonds areover half paid and the cost center for each is covering expenses.Tax millage rates applied for these will be stopped when thebonds are paid in full. Business expansion and new develop-ment are all positive.

The 2016 fiscal year budget will also include funds for thedredging of Cherry Grove channels along with many road im-provements and extensions to the Sports Park.

may be events like terrorism, war, insect and vermin infestationand ordinary wear and tear.

Types of Coverage - The two most common types of propertycoverage are replacement cost coverage and actual cash valuecoverage. Replacement cost coverage pays to replace damagedproperty with new property of like kind and quality, with noprovision for depreciation. Actual cash value coverage paysfor the replacement cost of the property, minus depreciationcosts for things like wear and tear and aging.

How is the premium determined? The three biggest factorsin determining the premium for property coverage are: thevalue of the building/contents, the construction of the buildingi.e. frame, joisted masonry, masonry, fire resistive and the lo-cation of the property. Other factors that may affect the pre-mium charged are sprinkler systems, alarm systems, outsidelighting. Once these factors are determined, then an appropri-ate premium will be charged.

How does this apply to Tidewater’s Property insurance? Our current property policy is written through lloyds of lon-don. It covers the following buildings and the contents: BeachCabana, Cassels Building, Amenity Center, Fitness Center, guard house, maintenance building, Bluffs pool andbuilding(s), Owners pool and building(s), Community pool andbuilding(s), South Island pool, building(s) and South Islanddock. The value of all buildings and contents is currently$3,900,000. These values are determined by an independentprofessional property appraiser and were updated prior to therenewal of the policy in November. These values will be up-dated on a 3–5 year basis. Our policy is written on a specialform with replacement cost coverage.

The Insurance Committee is currently comprised of five formerinsurance professionals with a combined 150+ years of expe-rience in the insurance industry. Committee members servethree-year terms that expire on a rotating basis. Property own-ers interested in serving on the committee are encouraged tosend a brief resume (bio), outlining their qualifications, to [email protected].

New 854 Area Code will Impact TidewaterResidents Greg SoloweyIn the spring of 2015, area code 854 will be added to the re-gional area currently served by 843. This is known as an areacode overlay when another area code (854) is added to the samegeographic region as an existing area code (843). An overlaydoes not require customers to change their existing area code.

Design Review Board Dave Chambers, ChairpersonIn early February I became chairman of the Design ReviewBoard. Nancy Hudson had to step down for personal reasons.let me “officially” thank Nancy for her service to the DRB andto the Tidewater community as a whole. Her dedication wasoutstanding and her desire to uphold the standards of our Com-munity was second to none. I can only hope to attain the samelevel of dedication that Nancy had. Thanks, Nancy!

Ask Before You Act!

In my time on the DRB, I have found that most of the situationsthat arise are because we think we know what is right or whatis OK to do and do it without checking first. Almost all of thesesituations could be avoided if you Ask Before You Act. The DRBis here to help and will respond in a timely manner to provideyou with guidance. So if we could all remember to ask beforewe act, I think we will avoid a lot of issues in the future.

As spring approaches (Yes, it is coming!) we all look forward togetting out and doing our spring-cleaning and gardening. It istime to freshen up mulch, clean up dead branches and rake upall the winter leaves, but most of all we want to get our flowersplanted. We all want Tidewater to have a beautiful look. So let’shave each one of us do our small part and then, as a whole, ourcommunity will look AWESOME!

Insurance CommitteePaul Wrobel, SecretaryWhat is Property Insurance? Property insurance is a vehiclefor businesses to protect themselves from unforeseen circum-stances, such as natural disasters, fires, theft and other calami-ties that may damage important properties. It is also the way toprotect a business’ physical goods such as buildings, signs, equipment and other potentially valuable goods. Other optionsthat can be included in a property policy are business interrup-tion and equipment breakdown coverage though specific cov-erage will vary based on policy and the needs of the business.

Types of Property Policies - Insurance regulations vary bystate and coverage offerings vary by company, but broadlyspeaking, there are three types of property insurance policies.Basic form policies cover ordinary things like damage from fire, lightning and wind. Broad form policies cover the same perilsas a basic form policy, but expand their coverage to includethings such as water damage, sprinkler malfunctions, ice andsnow. Special form policies, formally known as “all risk”, covereverything except things the policy specifically excludes, which

New Dialing Procedure - With multiple area codes serving thesame geographic region it becomes necessary to dial 10 digits(area code + telephone number), instead of seven digits, whencompleting a local call. Dates to be aware of are:

● As of March 14th - Consumers could begin using the new dialing procedures whenever a call is placed. If you for-get and dial seven digits, your call will still be completed.● September 19th - Ten digit dialing will be mandatory in

this area. If you do not use 10 digits, your calls will not be completed.● October 19th - New telephone services may be assigned

numbers using 854 area code.

Area Code Overlay Impacts Emergency Services - In additionto changing your dialing procedures, all services with automaticdialing equipment programmed to dial a 7-digit number mustbe reprogrammed to use 10-digit. This includes alarm and se-curity systems as well as life safety systems or medical devices.

Important to note, after September 19th systems will notwork if they have not been updated to dial a 10-digit num-ber. If you use the Gate House to monitor your alarm you musthave your system updated. A list of alarm service companiesthat can perform the necessary changes is available at the GateHouse. These companies also know the correct number for thealarm system to call. If you use a commercial company to mon-itor your alarm, you should contact them to determine if anycharges are required.
