Church Street and Main Street in Shildon will be closed to traffic from 10.30am on Sunday, November 8th to allow the Remembrance Day Service and Parade to go ahead. The parade will march down Church Street to arrive at the War Memorial for a two minute silence at 11.00am. At noon, a Remembrance Day Parade starts off from the REMEMBRANCE DAY PARADE Village Hall in Middridge for the Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial on South Side. On Saturday, November 7th, a short Remembrance Service will take place at the War Memorial in Redworth Road, Shildon, opposite the Railway Institute. Wreaths must be collected from the Council Offices, Civic Hall Square, Shildon by Friday, November 6th. Shildon Community Safety Group has announced its receipt of Smartwater; a deterrent against burglary. Smartwater is a colourless liquid with unique DNA coding that can be applied to valuables. In independent studies by University of Leicester and various police authorities, it proved more of a deterrent than security guards, burglar alarms, CCTV and access control systems. Criminals know about smart water and fear its power to forensically link them with the scene of a crime, so by coding your valuables and displaying smart SmartWater deterrent signs you are sending out a powerful warning to any thieves and burglars operating in the area. The Shildon Community Safety Group has been successful in receiving funding from the Durham Police Authority Community Initiative Support Scheme in order to purchase SmartWater, and are therefore able to offer these kits at a very subsidised cost. Each household kits retails at almost £60, but is offered to residents in Shildon at £15! SergeantAlex Clarke of Shildon Neighbourhood Policing Team said, “Traditionally, at this time of the year we have seen an increase in dwelling house burglaries across the Durham policing area. SmartWater offers Shildon residents an excellent and affordable opportunity to protect their homes and belongings from local thieves." The Shildon Community Safety Group’s Smart Water scheme coincides with the beginning of the police’s “Winter Nights” campaign, which seeks to address the increased trend in house burglary during the winter months. “The very fact that a home displays the SmartWater logo will deter most opportunist thieves and, in the unlikely event of a resident becoming a victim of burglary, then SmartWater offers the police the ability to act quickly and accurately identify stolen property and lead to the successful prosecution of the offenders”. SmartWater can withstand a range of operating conditions including long term exposure to sunlight and extremes in temperature, making it virtually impossible to remove. It is simply applied to inconspicuous areas of your valuables, making them forensically traceable back to your address. Traceability is something that criminals hate, and because they know that police are checking property for SmartWater, they will give anything protected a wide berth. For further information on purchase, support and guidance on SmartWater, contact Shildon Community Safety Group on 01388 778300. Marking your belongings with SmartWater makes them forensically traceable back to your address. The Stroke Association, which was set up to help people living with the effects of a stroke, is currently recruiting volunteers to support people with communication needs in the area.Volunteers are especially needed to assist with the group or to undertake one-to-one home visits to people who have aphasia, as a result of a stroke.Kay Seymour of The Stroke Association said, “Volunteering for The Stroke Association can be rewarding for both volunteers and the clients they work with. In addition to Communication Support Volunteers, we also have a range of volunteering

activities to support our work in assisting those affected by stroke. I’d like to encourage anyone with just a few hours each week to ring and find out more”.The Stroke Association is the UK’s only charity that is solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages. The charity funds research into prevention, treatment, better methods of rehabilitation and helps stroke patients and their families through it community services. For further information or to volunteer, contact Kay Seymour on 01388 771524 or e-mail [email protected]

This scheme is being rolled out across the town’s other two primary schools in the new year and then hopefully, subject to funding, the scheme will continue year on year."The Community Safety Group are very grateful to the schools

RESIdENTS uRgEd To RECyCLE BATTERIES & ELECTRICALS

Durham County Council’s green teams are urging residents and businesses in the area not to fall foul of new regulations governing the disposal of batteries. The new rules come into force in the UK this year and affect consumers, as well as retailers and producers of batteries. By January 1st, 2010, there will be a complete ban on sending vehicle batteries to landfill, so residents will also have to ensure these are recycled. From February 1st, 2010, the bigger retail outlets who sell batteries to customers will have to allow consumers to return their waste batteries free of charge. All waste batteries will then be treated and recycled properly in accordance with the regulations. Waste Technical Support Officer, Debbie Hibbitts, says batteries can be a real environment hazard, “Many batteries including rechargeable batteries contain toxic chemicals such as zinc, cadmium and lead. If these batteries are thrown in the rubbish bin, they will go to landfill where they can cause harm to the environment and cause health problems.”Environment Portfolio Holder, Councillor Bob Young, is urging everyone to

support the call to recycle, “ By taking your used batteries to one of Durham County Council’s 15 household waste recycling centres you will not only be helping to protect our environment but you will be making sure you don’t break the new regulations too. Members of the public can use

these recycling centres free of charge and all batteries brought to them will be recycled.”The following batteries will be accepted at the collection points – re-chargeable, non-rechargeable, battery packs, button cells, batteries in appliances and automotive batteries from household, not commercial, vehicles. For more information on reducing, re-using or recycling waste, or to find out where your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre is to take your waste batteries or electrical equipment to be recycled, contact a Waste Officer on 0191 383 5674 or visit the website www.durham.gov.uk

Items marked with this symbol should be recycled and not thrown out with household waste.

In the month we call NOVEMBER, there is a special day, When the Nation prays in homage ~ it’s called REMEMBRANCE DAY.They march in celebration, those Veterans of yore,They honour those brave men that died ~ the men who went to war.

They fought so we could all be free ~ to live in liberty,We honour their great sacrifice ~ each year we all agreeTo kneel in prayer ~ say ‘thank you Lord’ ~ to all who went away,Especially those who can’t return, those buried far away.

More than 1,000 residents in the Shildon area have signed a petition expressing concerns about how public bodies such as Police and local authorities deal with a range of dog-related issues. The major issues concerned ‘dangerous dogs’ and ‘responsible dog ownership’.Councillor Brian Stephens, Shildon Town Councillor and Durham County Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Local Partnerships, received the petition on Wednesday, October 28th, on behalf of the residents.Councillor Stephens welcomed

the petition and advised the residents presenting it that in his view, such direct action was as an excellent means of highlighting significant areas of public concern. He said the petition would now be considered by Durham County Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee, which would investigate and report back on its findings. Also present was Alan Boddy, Chair of the Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership.Mr Boddy said he would work with Durham County Council to ensure that the residents’ concerns were appropriately

considered. He also advised residents that recently-appointed Area Action Partnership coordinators were an excellent point of contact to ensure that residents’ views are fed into the democratic process. The coordinators and their contact details are detailed below. Anyone can contact them to give their views on this matter or on any other local issue of which they feel strongly.- Bishop Auckland and Shildon, Angelina Maddison 01388 816166 Ext 7788- Greatt Aycliffe and Middridge - Brian Riley 07818 510362.

A game of contrasting halves saw Grey Horse Over 40's emerge with a 4 - 3 victory against Houghton Swifts. Starting the game brightly, with good possession play and movement, Horse opened the scoring after fifteen minutes when Ian Bainbridge hit a crisp shot past the away ‘keeper from the edge of the box. After more good play in the Swifts’ half, Darren Foster broke on the left side to blast a shot into the net, beating the ‘keeper at his near post. Playing really well and looking comfortable, Foster scored his second just before half time with a run that beat the offside trap allowing him to once again blast past the stranded ‘keeper. “Flying

Pig” Bainbridge then failed to convert a diving header, leaving the Horse 3 nil up at half time. The second half saw a distinct change to the pattern of play. Swifts got a greater hold on the game, mainly due to Horse inadequacies with passing the football and giving it away too easily. On fifty minutes Swifts scored their first goal before the game was then halted by referee Mr Tommy Lye after a defensive challenge resulted in a Swift player being treated for a serious leg injury. The setback did not deter the away team from creating chances and a second was scored soon after. Horse began to lose concentration during this period, and were grateful

when Neil Bannister scored to put Horse 4 - 2 up with fifteen minutes to play. Sub, Kevin Hallimond had a good one on one chance that hit a post then rebounded to safety before Swifts scored a third to keep the pressure on a nervous looking home team. Horse held on for a valuable win and three points, but they must show better consistency over the duration of the game and not take games for granted against willing opposition. The Grey Horse management, players and supporters wish the unfortunate Swifts player a speedy recovery from the injury.Next game: Houghton Swifts away meet at Horse for 9.15am.

Shildon long-distance runner, Kate Avery, began the winter in style with a great performance at Birmingham’s Senneleys Park. Although, aged 18, she could have competed in the under-20 event, she decided to take part in the senior race, where she proceeded to win against her more experienced rivals in spite of a fall into a stream on the second of two laps. Kate said her win came as quite a surprise as she did not really know what to expect.“I took four weeks off after

winning the Darlington 10k in August so I’ve only been back into serous training for a few weeks.”“Naturally, I’m pleased to have won but I felt a bit silly when I went flat on my face into the stream giving those gathered around plenty to smile about.“Luckily, I had quite a lead at that stage so I just picked myself up and carried on.”Kate is aiming to gain a place in the GB team that will compete in the European Championships in Dublin next month.

AVERy STARTS IN STyLE

Shildon took on Unibond Premier Division team Durham City on Tuesday, November 3rd, in the 2nd Round of the Durham Challenge Cup. They could not have wished for a better start, taking the lead after only 3 minutes. The goal came from a brilliant passing move down the right, which involved Sam Garvie, Chris Hughes and Danny Richmond, who cut inside before beating three defenders and driving the ball firmly home. The first half finished with Shildon 1 – 0 up. They had controlled the play, but, once again, had been unable to finish off their moves. The start of the 2nd half saw

Stuart Niven come on for Danny Richmond. On the hour, Man-of-the-Match Jonathan Agbatar put Andy Johnson through, but his shot was well-saved by Riches. As the match wore on, Shildon's defence became a little sloppy. At the other end, Marc Riches, in goal, was coping with everything that Shildon could throw at him. With less than 5 minutes. remaining, Durham were awarded a free kick, right on the edge of the box, for an off-the-ball offence by John Hutton. They took a short free kick and the ball was squared to Gareth

Ayers who converted, to make the score 1 – 1. The equaliser ensured that the sides would play 30 minutes extra time to decide the tie.Shildon were unlucky in the lst minute of extra time when Warren Byrne's shot hit the bar. They were finally rewarded for their persistent pressure when a header from Byrne was pushed out by the keeper, only for Sam Garvie to bundle it in.In the final minute, Warren Byrne picked up a loose ball and rounded the Durham keeper to score the final goal in a 3 – 1 win to the Railwaymen.Shildon's next two league games are both at home. On Saturday, November 7th, they entertain Horden C.W. and on Wednesday, November 11th, (7.30pm kick off) they play Bedlington Terriers. The Railwaymen then travel to Congleton Town, on Saturday, November 14th, for the F.A. Vase 2nd Round Tie, which incidentally will be Shildon's 17th away tie in a row in this competition, possibly a record. The supporters bus will be leaving Dean Street at 9.30am.
