We will celebrate Holy Communion at both services, and remember members and friends of St. Mark’s who have joined the Church Triumphant. – Who will you want to remember? CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY, November 23, will bring an end to our current church year. To help celebrate this festive day, we will have a harpist at the 8:00 & 10:15 AM services, providing special music. See the biography of Cheryl Dungan Cunningham, Harpist, which appears in this newsletter issue. HALLOWEEN PARADE, OCTOBER 26 TH - The Outreach Committee of St. Mark’s will be busy in reaching out to the community along the parade route—on our property-- by offering hot beverages if it’s cold (hot chocolate, warm cider); and cold beverages (iced tea, water) if it’s on the warm side. Spice cookies will accompany the drinks. We have a new brochure that we plan on passing out. If you would like to help with this outreach ministry, please speak to Karen Keller, Jill Haldeman or Pastor Chuck HOMETOWN CHRISTMAS PARADE, DECEMBER 7 TH - This is a wonderful way for us to “shine”. Much like the Halloween parade, St. Mark’s is on the route for Santa Claus, who arrives at our gazebo to visit with all the little boys and girls. We usually see hundreds of visitors come through our building to visit “Mrs. Claus’s Café”, and enjoy the cookies and hot chocolate and coffee. This is yet one more opportunity for us to reach out to the community, especially so close to Christmas Eve Services. Volunteers will be needed to serve in many roles. If you would like to volunteer your time in some way, please speak to Bonnie Gillespie. SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE: This brief, but powerful service, will be held on Sunday, November 23 at 3:00 PM. The focus of this service is to remember loved ones who have passed away and how we might cope with the upcoming holidays. The holidays are often very difficult to face for those who have lost a loved one. Through the hearing of scripture, the singing of hymns, prayer, and a brief sermon, the spirits of the bereaved are often uplifted and comforted to face the holiday season. Light refreshments and conversation follow. This service is for members and friends of St. Mark’s. ADVENT FAMILY NIGHT: Sunday, November 30 th – 5:30 pm. Multi- purpose room. Come join us as we make Chrismons, enjoy some pizza and conversation. Look for sign-up flyers in future church bulletins in November. New members: We welcome to our St. Mark’s Family, Craig Shuman. “THANKFULNESS FOR VOLUNTEERS” “I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.” I Timothy 1:3 The thought occurred to me as Kathy and I got ready to tackle our very first two-month issue of our newsletter that I might struggle a little for a topic. Yes, there are many topics that lend themselves to one in October and November: Reformation, All Saints, Thanksgiving, and The First Sunday in Advent (11/30), there are almost too many to choose from. I decided to focus in on volunteerism and all the members who volunteer here at St. Mark’s in so many ways. I want to say “thank you” to all the members who give of their time and talents to the church. I believe it’s certainly the right time to do this as we look towards Thanksgiving and contemplate who we might be thankful for. I thank God for all of you who volunteer your time and talent at St. Mark’s in the following roles or in an organization of the church, in no particular order:

As you can see, the list is quite extensive. The church, our church, depends upon many

children, youth and adults to give of their time and talents to carry out the programs we do. In the words of the Apostle Paul: “I thank God, whom I serve, as forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.” Yes, for all you do, I thank God for your volunteerism, for the giving of your time and talent to the One whom we all faithfully serve, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. – Thank you!

“ST. MARK’S TRIVIA CORNER” Welcome! Hope you’ve been able to answer some of these “nonessential” questions. True, they are small facts

that don’t make or break your day, but I hope they have been somewhat informative in some small way. Have you ever wondered where ‘trivia’ came from? It was derived from Latin “TRI” (three). In Roman times, at the intersection of any 3 streets, there were kiosks (information systems) where information was posted for travelers. However, this was usually totally ignored by the citizens, which is possibly why it means ‘completely insignificant’ in today’s society and has no real-world use. The word ‘trivia’ entered English through the academic world. The ‘trivium’ were the 3 liberal arts (grammar, rhetoric and logic) in 15

th century universities.

So, now you know where it came from – yes, even more trivia! May you and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving (Gobble Gobble!!).

Answers on page 10 COMMUNITY MEAL -

On the evening of September 8th,

St. Mark’s staffed the Community Meal at Pennsburg UCC. Thank you to Linda Ebright, Diane Mohr, Priscilla

Kistler, Carla Hausmann, Bev Kahler, Joan Brunner, Bonnie Gillespie and Sally Wimmer for serving on the committee. They reported feeding 75 people including the helpers. The meal went well, the chicken was delicious – all leftovers were handed out. St. Mark’s looks forward to the next time we staff in 2015.

NEW SIGNAGE: Thanks to Pete Reigner, signage reading “No Loitering” has been placed on the parking lot and along Front Street side of the church. Throughout the summer neighborhood youth have been hanging around on our property leaving trash on the premises and breaking two windows. The police informed us that they were powerless to tell the youth to vacate the premises if there was no signage informing them that they were not permitted to loiter on church property. With the signage now posted, we have given the police the necessary tools to have anyone loitering on church property to “move on.” Again, thanks to Pete for purchasing the signs and posting them.

Dear Prayer Shawl Committee: I wanted to say thank you for the prayer shawl. I have had many compliments

on the multicolored shawl. I use it more than I ever thought I would. Thanks again – Sincerely – Janice Kline

Pectoral Cross Redirectory September 14, 2014

By the Rev. William A. Fluck

Holy Cross Day is always September 14, so this day only occurs on a Sunday about every five to six years. This year was one of those years, and it was more special than usual for me. I hope that through all the 21 years that I was privileged to be your pastor, you have noticed that I have worn a cross around my neck. It is called a pectoral cross because of its position upon the chest. I would like to tell you a little bit about its origin. I was or-dained in and began my ministry in Christ Lutheran Church, Al-lentown, in March of 1958. Pat Clancy and I were married in July of that year. In the opening months of my ministry, Pat suggested that we secure a cross for me to wear, having seen such crosses on a few other pastors in the Allentown Area. About the same time we met a member of Christ Lutheran who was then starting out a career as a silversmith: his name—C. Lester Smith.

He proceeded to sketch a number of designs on a piece of paper. Pat and I chose one, and he proceeded to make a cross in that design out of solid silver. He even etched his mark on the back, so I am sure there is no other cross exactly like it in the world. The cross, of course, is the premier symbol of our faith, repre-senting as it does the crucified and resurrected Christ. It is, inci-dentally, the only piece of jewelry that I wear. When I retired from my post here in 1996, I was already be-ginning to ponder what will happen to this cross when I am gone. Since almost immediately after retiring, I received a call to Augustus Lutheran Church, Trappe, to be their Visitation and Associate Pastor, for a time I stopped thinking about it.

Two years ago, when I retired for the second time, I became serious about the disposition of this pectoral cross. Since the number of my professional appearances has begun to dwindle, some months ago, keeping in mind that this cross for me is priceless, for its sentimental not its mone-tary value, I asked Pastor Chuck this question: If I were to give you this cross, would you wear it? His answer—Yes! Together we looked for an appropriate date for its conveyance. We discovered that Holy Cross Day this year was Holy Cross Sunday. What more appropriate time could there be for the transfer of this cross? And I told Pastor Chuck that as he received this cross, it comes with but one string attached. My request to him is that when the time comes for him to conclude his ministry, be it full-time here or part-time elsewhere, I want him to pass this cross along to a younger pastor that he admires and respects as much as I admire and respect him.

THE THIRTEEN RETURNS: St. Mark’s is pleased to welcome back for another concert The Thirteen, the New York-based choral ensemble on Sunday, December 21

st, at 6:00 PM. We had the

pleasure of hosting them last November, when they honored St. Cecilia with a wonderful concert. Their voices are magnificent! This December the choir will perform well-loved Christmas Choral Music, as well as music from the Renaissance Franco-Flemish tradition. “We love performing these Christmas concerts. Over the course of an evening, the audience goes from worrying about everything they have to do to get ready for the holiday, to letting the music move them to relaxation and contentment,” notes The Thirteen’s Artistic Director, Matthew Robertson. The Thirteen is comprised of thirteen musicians from around the country specializing in early music. Robertson describes The Thirteen as “committed to a non-hierarchal music making process where every member plays a part in the artistic choices of the Choir, bringing about a unity and depth of voice.” The Thirteen concert is free- there is no admission charge nor will any tickets be sold. However, a free-will offering will be taken. A reception, with light refreshments, will follow the concert. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and join us on December 21

st, six o’clock in the evening for what promises

to be a terrific concert. FORGET ME NOT MINISTRY: This group of volunteers helps the homebound or semi-homebound members of St. Mark’s stay connected in a small, but vital way.

Perhaps it’s by an occasional phone call, a note or card in the mail- especially on their birthday, or even a personal visit that reminds the member that they’re not forgotten here at St. Mark’s. If you would like to be part of this wonderful ministry, a meeting is plan for Sunday, October 12

th, 11:30 AM, downstairs in the Social

Room. Any question should be directed to Pastor Chuck.

DID YOU KNOW? Our children and youth will be involved in two upcoming service projects this fall. Some of our Sunday School children and their families will be

preparing, cooking and serving a hot meal to the residents of Upper Perkiomen Manor on Saturday, October 25

th, 12 noon. They expect to

serve up to 75 – 80 residents. On Saturday, November 25

th, Cat. Class youth will be

preparing, cooking and serving a hot meal, up to 50 residents of a shelter in Delaware County, where Pastor Chuck’s friend, Jim Shelton works. Our children and youth do a wonderful job in remembering our neighbors and those who are less fortunate.

“ M A C O B Y R U N - R U N ” : Saturday, November 8

th, 9:00

AM (at the MACOBY Run Golf Course). This is a wonderful opportunity to run or walk to raise money for The Open Link,

The Library of the UPV and the Upper Perkiomen Police Officer’s Association. While the funds raised for The Open Link and the Library go to programs that are well known, the police are hoping to raise $5,000 to outfit the full complement of officers including the Chief of Police. “Race applications” are available in the church narthex or by stopping by the church office during the week. There is a $20 entry fee. For your participation, you will receive a long sleeve shirt. (You may also register the day of the race; however, the costs are then $25; and, you’re not guaranteed a shirt.) There is even a 1 mile run for children under the age of ten. Why not get family or friends to sponsor you and raise some extra cash for these three fine groups. Light refreshments will be served following the race. For serious runners, there will two professional timers present so you can get your “official time.” Any questions should be directed to Pastor Chuck.

PAGE 8 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS OCT/NOV 2014

SAME GENDER MARRIAGES: Conversations with Pastor Chuck concerning this topic continue in October in the Library Lounge. Six

conversations have taken place so far, six remain. The remaining schedule looks like this: Wednesday, October 1, 7 PM; Thursday, October 2, 11 AM; Monday, October 13, 11 AM & 7 PM; Monday, October 20, 7 PM; and, Wednesday, October 29, 7 PM.

GOD’S WORK * OUR HANDS- The three Lutheran churches in the valley: St. John’s, St. Mark’s and St. Paul’s collected breakfast items to help supplement the two meals

provided through the Meals on Wheels program to neighbors in the valley. Hundreds of breakfast items are to be delivered to the Senior Center (where the meals come from) in early October. In addition, on September 19

th, St. Mark’s

collected other food items to help supplement lunch and dinner for friends in need. Thanks to all who contributed to this cooperative endeavor between our sister churches. NEW EXTERIOR DOORS were installed by Alderfer Glass in the Nursery (these doors exit to the courtyard) and the exterior doors outside the social room (these doors also exit to the courtyard). These were the original doors when the educational wing was built, in 1960. This project was made possible by a generous gift from a member back in May. We’re very grateful for the member’s generosity and thoughtfulness- the doors were in very poor condition.

ST. MARK’S NEWSLETTER PUBLICATION: Our newsletter will now be published six times a year: O c t o b e r / N o v e m b e r ,

December/January, February/March, April/May, June/July and August/September. This decision was made to give Kathy and Pastor more time in the office to concentrate their focus and energies elsewhere. To keep informed about upcoming activities and events in a timely manner, check out our weekly church bulletin and/or our web page, www.stmarkspennsburg.com.

ST MARK’S CAFÉ: Is now “open” most Sundays through the middle of June next year. Staffed by volunteers during the Sunday School Hour (9:00 – 10:00 am),

you will find a continental breakfast-coffee, juice and something delicious to munch on. Many parents stop by to talk and wait for classes to end and then pick up their child. It’s free---and you’re invited to stop by the multi-purpose room to join the conversation in the cafe. By the way, if you would like to volunteer to host, see Carol May, the Café Coordinator.

OC/-NOV 2014 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 9

The annual Altar Guild Friend-ship dinner will be held on Octo-ber 29, 2014 at the Valley Café beginning at 6:30 pm. ALL members of St. Mark’s are invit-

ed to this evening of fellowship. The buffet style meal will include meatballs ,chicken mar-sala, roast beef in gravy and rigatoni. Sides will include garden salad, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and rolls. The cost will include a selection of des-serts and beverages. The cost for the evening will be $18.00. Please make your reservations with Lucy Kern by October 19th. Checks should be made payable to St. Mark’s Altar Guild.

Cemetery Committee Update: Opening Available – Do you have an interest in serving on St. Mark’s Cemetery Committee? We currently meet every two

months on the last Monday of the month. Our next meeting will be held November 24

th.

Please join us to learn what we’re all about. Feel free to ask questions. See Leroy Kline or Narona Gebert. She can be reached at 215 679-2438. In order to help keep up the good reputa-tion of our cemetery’s appearance, we ask for your cooperation. Our weed-wacker removes flowers placed at the base of a tombstone when weed-wacking. Time does not allow for him to replace artificial flowers that are stuck into the ground individually. Please place flowers in a container or that are potted. Sprays are permit-ted. Dead, dried up flowers on a grave are re-moved from the grave site before the regular dates of removing flowers. Depressions on the cemetery and the sunken areas around monuments are being filled in with ground. We continue to strive to keep our cemetery looking neat and clean. In recent weeks, Robert Kern and Narona Gebert have gone from one veteran’s grave to another, replacing missing and broken flag hold-ers and flags. We respect our veterans and try to show our appreciation for their service by

keeping their flags flying. Thank you. – Your Cemetery Committee Please remove all summer arrangements from the cemetery by November 1

st and all fall

arrangements by December 1st. Any arrange-

ments not removed by these dates will be re-moved by the caretaker. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. To the Endowment Fund Committee: Thank you very much for the scholarship this year. I’m going into my junior year at Lycoming College and it’s a pretty exciting year for me. I’m still on the swim team. Our team is travelling to Barba-dos in December to do some training over Christmas break then, in January I am venturing to Spain to study in Madrid for the entire Spring Semester. I greatly appreciate your financial support as you’re helping make all this possible! Thank you very much! – Felicia Sloyer Endowment Fund Committee: Thank you so much for awarding me as a scholarship recipi-ent. This money will be a great help in paying my tuition this semester and I am so thankful that St. Mark’s has acknowledged the work I am putting in to further my education. Thank you again – Sierra J. Kahler St. Mark’s Endowment Fund Committee: Thank you very much for selecting me as a recipient of the St. Mark’s Scholarship to aid me in pursuing my education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Insti-tute. The generous scholarship will be extreme-ly beneficial in helping me to afford my educa-tion, and I appreciate it very much. As I have attended St. Mark’s for my entire life, I can easily say that it has been a place where I have been able to grow as an individual and a student, and the impact of the leaders of the church and the congregation in my life cannot go overlooked. I would not be the person I am today without all of this support and this scholarship is just another example of the church willingly providing needed aid. Again, I thank you for selecting me and ap-preciate it very much. - Adam Ney
