RELOAD! December 2013 Celebrating Our 26th Year ISLANDERS VS. MAINLANDERS Jeff Hunter Our caravan for the annual “Islanders vs. Mainlanders” left Fairfield Country at 06:30AM in anticipation of a trip to hostile enemy territory. As we passed outpost Greenwich, there was no turning back. We were off to the land of the Pine Barrens, Sandy Beaches, and funny accents. One hour and forty-five minutes later, we were welcomed with open arms and warm bagels! This is our fifth trip to Suffolk County Trap & Skeet to see who would claim the coveted “Islanders vs. Mainlanders” crown. Forty Travelers and their guests shot the very tricky Suffolk course. Since Suffolk County is a 12 station course, most of the stands were four pair presentations. Having eight targets meant you had to concentrate and consistently execute your plan to come away with a good score. For example, station eight was a true pair of straight away trap type targets thrown down a clearing. One target stayed low and the other went high. The shooter was perched atop a seven foot platform looking down on the traps. Both targets were straight forward, but if you weren’t focusing on the task at hand it was easy to come out with a 6 instead of an 8. Station 12 was five pairs of a trap teal followed by a left to right quartering target on report. Both traps were about 20 yards away and the trap teal went straight away. It was kind of like shooting trap from the 20 yard line. The other trap was also about twenty yards away in front of the shooter, but launched a quartering target going left to right. Again, easy to hit, but also easy to miss. The best presentation on the course, in my opinion, was station nine. This stand had a left to right high chandelle followed by a quartering in target from

RELOAD!December 2013

Celebrating Our 26th Year

ISLANDERS VS. MAINLANDERSJeff Hunter

Our caravan for the annual “Islanders vs.

This stand had a left to right high chandelle followed by a quartering in target from

left to right. The quartering in target rose from the ground to about 30 feet in the air as it sailed left to right. If you shot the chandelle on the drop, it put you in really good position for the quartering target. Ed Davies and I agreed (after we shot, of course) that the chandelle would have been easier of it was taken on the way up. It was a great example of luring a shooter into doing the comfortable thing without truly looking at all angles.

Shoot Manager, John Hachmann, had the event catered on site. We had a very good lunch as the scores were tallied in anticipation of another Mainlander win. The scoring gods were not with us this time as the Islanders won by a score of 10 to 7. Guest Vinnie Flauto took the top spot with Gus Georgatos as high Traveler.

YEAR END WRAP-UPJeff Hunter

As we wrap-up 2013 and look forward to 2014, I would like to take this time to thank some people that make things run smoother, easier, and better this year.

First, I would like to thank my guest writers for Reload this year. I always appreciate when Lans Christensen volunteers to cover the shoot as he did this year when I couldn’t attend. Ed Davies’ report on the NSCA Super School was a welcome addition to the normal Reload articles. John Hachmann, Bob Schrager, Nile Pullin, Jim Adams, Ira Conklin III, and Dean Anglace have made it easier on me by contributing some of the normal Reload stuff.

When we added the FITASC event this year, Dom Uliano and Howard Berman helped guide me through the registration, squadding, and general workings of a FITASC shoot. I am very grateful for their assistance.

There are many people behind the scenes that make our shoots run smoothly. Dean’s wife, Danielle, has been a staple at the registration table for most of this year and assists John Hachmann with the inevitable walk-ins. Ron Leonardi has provided calming counsel on more than one occasion when we know we’re getting 120 guns. There are others still who stuff awards into envelopes, purchase gift cards for awards, address award envelopes after the recipient skipped lunch, and run to the bank to deposit checks from the shoot.

Thank you.

TOYS FOR TOTSOnce again we will be supporting the Dutchess County “Toys For Tots” at our annual Dick Losee Memorial Shoot and Christmas Party. Toys For Tots is a program run by the Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys to families in need. We will be collecting toy donations at the shoot on December 15th. If you would rather support the charity with a monetary donation, that would be appreciated as well.

MEMBERSHIP/GUIDEBOOK UPDATEJohn Hachmann

Your CTSCA membership renewal forms were sent out in early November. If you have NOT received your renewal form yet, please contact John Hachmann ([email protected]).

Your membership renewals are due by December 31st and any member not in good standing by the Annual Meeting will not be included in the Guidebook. This year’s Guidebook will be going to print shortly after the Annual Meeting.

We are also looking for advertisers to offset the cost of printing the Guidebook. Each ad is $100 and is a full page in the book. All ads will be printed in the Guidebook and at least one issue of Reload! Please see the last page of Reload! for the the flyer.

Lastly, if you have shooting buddies that are interested in joining the Connecticut Travelers, we have included a Membership Application in this edition. Share the best value in sporting clays with your friends!

SHOOT LOGISTICSOver the next several months, you will notice the entry forms will be sent to different addresses. John is going to be unavailable for a couple shoots and the entry forms will be going to Jeff until February. We realize this deviates from our regular plan, but we will be confirming registrations on the website as we get them in.

HOLIDAY SHOOTTom Fiumarello

You are invited to the “1st Annual Holiday Shoot” at St. Hubert’s Club at Guarino Farms on Sunday, December 1st. The 100 target shoot is over 10 stations and will include a gift at every station (for the person who can break the exploding target)! Prizes and Surprises all evening and a wonderful dinner at Cibo’s in Marlboro after the shoot. Best of all, we are asking everyone that comes to the shoot to bring a new unwrapped toy for a needy child at Christmas. Whatever is brought by you will be matched in kind by Judy and Tom Fiumarello. This shoot is all about Fun, Family, Friends, and all that is good about our sport. To register for the shoot or for more details, please contact Tom at (845) 625-3151 or [email protected].
