1.3 LITURGY OF THE WORD

Religion 2

TODAY’S UNDERSTANDINGS By the end of this class, the students will...

Recognize the general parts of the Mass: Liturgy of the Word.

WHAT IS THE MASS? A good way to describe the Mass is to say that it is

Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday made present today in ritual.

Jesus instituted this sacrament to “perpetuate the sacrifice of the Cross throughout the centuries until he should come again and in this way to entrust to his beloved Bride, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet ‘in which Christ is eaten, the heart is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us” ” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, #42).

WHAT IS THE MASS? The basic shape of the

ritual of the mass can be described as a meal.

We… Gather (the Gathering) Tell stories (story telling) Share a meal (meal

sharing) Are commissioned

(commissioning)

PART 1: GATHERING RITES Purpose: The purpose of the

gathering is to bring us together into one body—ready to listen and to break bread together.

Water: Dipping one’s hand in the water and making the sign of the cross as one enters reminds us of our Baptism.

PART 1: GATHERING RITES Genuflection: This act shows reverence and

respect to the altar and the presence of Christ in the tabernacle.

The tabernacle is where the Blessed Sacrament (the consecrated bread) is kept.

PART 1: GATHERING RITES Greeting

The procession is the beginning of the Mass in which the altar cross, the candles, the Book of Gospels, and the priest walk towards the altar.

The priest then begins with the greeting “the Lord be with you.”

PART 1: GATHERING RITES Penitential Rite

The penitential rite is the moment in which we “pause and recall our common need for salvation (Richstatter).”
