Sensitive Electronic Equipment Can’t Tolerate Power Quality DisturbancesData centers aren’t the only facilities susceptible to power quality problems. Today, more and more sensitive electronic equipment is being used in automated manufacturing plants, continuous process industries, healthcare facilities, and laboratories. Users everywhere are being confronted with a proliferation of loads which cannot tolerate power quality disturbances such as voltage sags and swells, momentary interruptions, and frequency excursions.
To make matters worse, with the decreasing size and increasing capabilities of this equipment, the density of such equipment has grown dramatically in affected facilities, greatly increasing the cost of power. The air conditioning system for this equipment must now be considered part of the critical load.

The scatter plot below illustrates the results of a nationwide EPRI study on distribution-system voltage disturbances. This study showed that 98% of disturbances are attributable to voltage sags and momentary interruptions lasting 16 seconds or less.
The 60 seconds of protection provided by the PureWave UPS System protects sensitive loads from 99% of all power quality disturbances. In many cases, a back-up generator may not be required.

The PureWave UPS System consumes less power, creates less building heat, and presents a smaller carbon footprint than conventional UPSs, resulting in real savings.

Big Savings in Energy CostThe PureWave UPS System offers the highest efficiency of any system available: 98.5%, including air conditioning. It’s the least costly system to operate. Compared to a 92%-efficient conventional UPS system, a PureWave UPS System serving an 1800-kW load will save over $90,000 per year in energy costs, based on a rate of $.08/kWHr.
But conventional UPSs are typically run at lower capacity levels, leading to efficiencies less than 92% . . . so a PureWave UPS System saves even more money in comparison.

Outdoor Installation Is a Big PlusConventional battery-based UPS systems take up a good deal of space because of the large number of wet-cell batteries they use. The battery banks require a separate, dedicated room with special attention to ventilation, the possibility of corrosive effects, and temperature monitoring. A costly addition to the facilities must often be constructed.
Conventional battery-based UPS systems also generate substantial heat, so additional space must be allocated for dedicated, redundant air conditioning units.
The PureWave UPS System, on the other hand, can be installed outdoors on a pad, as shown below. Valuable floor space isn’t needed.

Truly Maintenance-Free BatteriesThe PureWave UPS System utilizes up to eight battery and inverter modules, as determined by the size of the critical load. Additional modules can be added at any time, as the load grows.
Unlike conventional battery-based UPS systems, in the PureWave UPS System the batteries aren’t continuously connected to the dc bus. The batteries thus do not experience dc ripple current, which creates heat that degrades performance. The batteries are automatically recharged, equalize-charged, and continuously monitored to ensure system availability. The unique PureWave battery management system takes energy storage to its highest level of reliability in the industry.
The PureWave UPS System is the only three-phase UPS system designed completely around the performance parameters of the batteries. The factory-sealed batteries don’t require topping off with electrolyte, or any other maintenance.
The PureWave UPS System is also the only UPS system with a five-year/625-megajoule non-prorated battery warranty. In a typical application, that translates to over 1,000 power disturbances in 5 years. Replacement of the battery strings is recommended in the sixth year.

Seamless Generator Connection, Reduced Generator SizingThe PureWave UPS System allows critical-load users to plan for seamless protection from extended power outages. Ride-through time can be tailored to permit start-up of a new or existing back-up generator. Transfers to and from the back-up generator are “covered” by the PureWave UPS System.
In applications using conventional UPSs, the back-up generator must be oversized to accommodate the on-line inefficiencies . . . typically 140% of the protected load. But with its off-line design, the PureWave UPS System presents a very small load profile to the generator. The generator can be sized at only 100% to 105% of the protected load . . . saving on both initial cost and ongoing operating cost.
Lowest Total Cost of OwnershipWhen installed outdoors, the PureWave UPS System eliminates the substantial expenses associated with modification to the building’s interior, including construction of dedicated battery rooms.
And after installation, the higher efficiency and lesser maintenance requirements of the PureWave UPS System reduce ongoing energy usage and provide faster return on investment.

How It WorksShown below is a typical single-line diagram of a PureWave UPS System applied with a back-up generator.
During normal operation, the load is powered by the utility source through the normally closed PureWave Power-Electronic Switch.
Voltage is continuously monitored on all three phases of the source. If the utility disturbance monitor senses a disturbance exceeding 610% of nominal voltage, it sends an “open” signal to the power-electronic switch, coincident with a “run” signal to the inverter module(s). Load is transferred to the stored-energy source—typically in two to four milliseconds . . . fast enough for computers and other sensitive electronic devices to ride through.
Upon detection of an extended power outage, the PureWave UPS System provides “soft” load transfer to the back-up generator. This feature allows users to take advantage of lower interruptible service rates available from most electric utilities.
The PureWave UPS System provides seamless transfer between the utility source and the back-up generator without the need for costly utility paralleling switchgear. And the generator can be sized up to 35% smaller than with conventional UPS systems.
When utility source voltage returns to its normal limits, the PureWave UPS System synchronizes output voltage with that of the utility source, and sends a “close” signal to the power-electronic switch along with a “stop” signal to the inverter module(s). After a few seconds, the battery chargers turn on to restore the batteries to 100% capacity.

Easy-to-Use Monitoring SystemThe Windows®-based PureWave monitoring software is simple to set up and run. At your remote location, the graphical interface gives you real-time system status information, the status of each inverter
module, power outage data, load voltage and current, power factor, and a variety of alarm indicators. Remote alarm monitoring is available too. Real time status information is also available via Modbus/TCP server.
