    FUEL ANALYSIS

    FUEL ANALYSIS06 FUEL ANALYSIS 07

Fuels analysis is a very important aspect of ma-chinery maintenance. Testing fuel for suitabilitybefore use is essential. Even though fuel relatedmachinery problems are caused by only a smallpercentage of all the fuels which are supplied, the importance of regular fuel testing should notbe underestimated.

Fuel analysis can identify potential causes for fuelfilter plugging, smoke, loss of power, poor injectionperformance, malfunctioning throttle positionsensors and sticking valves.

    Residue and Heavy Fuel Oil

Marine diesel engines are categorized as low-speed,medium-speed and high-speed. These three enginetypes require different fuels. Low-speed engines canbe fuelled with residual fuels containing high Sulphur

tests to check the fuel for chemical contaminantsand impurities.

We are committed to providing accurate results, always within 48 hours and at reasonable cost.

levels whereas medium-speed engine fuel require-ments vary according to the engine design. High-speed engines are sensitive to the fuel quality andrun on clear distillate fuel with low Sulphur content.

The application of diesel with less than 500 ppmSulphur can cause wear to the pump in engines ofearlier generations due to the reduced lubricationproperties of low and ultra-low Sulphur fuels. TheISO 8217 standard specifies a lubricity limit for distillate fuels with less than 500 ppm Sulphur.TRIBOCARE’s laboratory is fully equipped for testinglow and ultra-low Sulphur gasoil.

    Low and Ultra-low Sulphur Gasoil

    Marine Fuel Analysis

  • TRIBOCARE’s laboratory is not limited to aviationand marine fuel analyses; we also analyse thequality of fuels for automotive and stationary engines of power generation plants in accordancewith the latest industrial standards.

    FUEL ANALYSIS

    08 FUEL ANALYSIS 09

Safety is the most important aspect of any flight. Therefore, the analysis and quality assurance measuresfor aviation fuels are stricter than the ones for non-aviation fuels. The basis for aviation turbine fuels ismainly straight-run kerosene. In the past, illuminatingkerosene was sufficient as aircraft fuel. But modernflight engines demand high quality fuels of similarquality in every aspect although there are differentsuppliers at different airports. Jet fuel quality is subjectto specifications by the International Air TransportAssociation, Engine manufacturers and test methodstandardisation bodies such as IP and ASTM.

In many airports around the world jet fuel is suppliedfrom a joint fuelling system which contains fuels fromvarious suppliers. The aviation fuel mix in these systemshas to meet the quality requirements according tothe parameters, methods and limits stated by theAFQRJOS checklist, which covers the critical require-ments suggested in the major aviation fuel standards.

    Aviation Gasoline

    Aviation Fuel Analysis

    Aviation Kerosene

Aviation Gasoline is a highly purified form of gasolineused in small piston engine aircrafts. Its propertiesdiffer from those of aviation kerosene. Critical prop-erties for AVGAS quality are volatility, calorific value, antiknock ratings and gum values. Careful handlingis required not only during the manufacturing processbut also during storage and distribution in order toprotect AVGAS from contamination.

    FUEL ANALYSIS

    We analyse Your Fuel

TRIBOCARE’s fuel testing laboratory is not limited tomarine fuels; we have testing facilities for aviationkerosene, aviation gasoline, motor gasoline, diesel, biofuels etc. We also offer to testcrude oil, naphta, base oil and petro-leum solvents in accordance with theinternationally accepted standard testmethods.

We never grow tired of emphasiz-ing that all the services we offerare of reproducible quality andat reasonable cost.

  • TRIBOCARE is an independent laboratory providingall analysis services required by our customers accord-ing to industry standards. We provide our servicesto major oil companies as well as global and localcompanies worldwide.

The oil condition is determined by many parametersand its impact on equipment varies over a period oftime. Therefore comprehensive testing and trendingof the results is important.

Standard – analyses the condition of the lubricatingoils, focusing on large systems such as main enginesand hydraulic systems to ensure that the oils are fitfor continued service.

Enhanced – monitors the condition of the equip-ment in addition to analyzing the condition of theused oils. Analyzing the oil which is in contact with

the machinery enables you to monitor the perfor-mance of this machinery. The oil of a small systemcan be easily replaced but for a critical system itmight still be a useful service to prevent machinerybreakdown.

In general, the service describes the key oil charac-teristics such as kinematic viscosity, base and acidnumbers. It evaluates the external contaminants, thetrends of different wear elements, the size of particles,

the ISO cleanliness index as well as the water content. The analysis reports also show new oil characteristics and OEM limits, which serve as a reference and form the basis for interpreting theUsed Oil Analysis results in accordance with industrystandards.

With the help of a colour system for quick and easyorientation the analysis reports provide an immediateoverview of oil condition and trends.

We offer two Levels of Service:

TRIBOCARE’s Used Oil Analysis (UOA) reports arebased on the hands-on experience of our analystsand associated engineers and their in-depth knowl-edge of the manufacturing process and applicationof lubricating oil, especially in the marine sector.

Our UOA reports present the results in such a waythat all end users – with or without technical back-ground – can easily understand even highly technicalaspects and implement the necessary preventive andpredictive maintenance measures in order to protecttheir machinery and avoid expensive breakdowns.

For quick and easy orientation and assessment whetherthe oil is fit for continued service, the oil conditionis rated in three color coded categories: Normal(green), Warning (yellow) and Critical (red).

In addition to the oil rating, our test reports containa unit rating, which provides insight into wear andtear as well as any abnormalities that might occur inthe machinery, which can be diagnosed from the oilsample from the relevant piece of machinery.

On the basis of the latest sample test data and thetrending results, we include a recommendation ofcorrective action in our test reports if necessary.

    LUBRICANT ANALYSIS

    Used Oil Trend Analysis

The trend analysis is a tool to monitor how the oilquality in various applications changes over a periodof time compared to the levels which are consideredcritical for this particular application. A consistent rateof change leads to the conclusion that the machineryand the lubricating oil is functioning normally. Inorder to derive sound data it is very important towork with representative samples, always taken fromthe same sampling points. It is equally important to provide correct sample data, e.g. service hours of unitand oil, sampling date, oil grade and brand, oil volumeand information on environmental conditions such

as humidity and temperature. Warning and criticallevels are specified for each individual parameter butbeyond that wear and contamination patterns canbe established by evaluating a combination of thedata of different parameters. One example of thisapproach is the evaluation of saline water ingress, which is deduced from parameters such as Sodium,Magnesium and Chloride in combination.

The trending feature isalso incorporated in ourUOA application, whichenables our customersto choose and comparevarious parameters witha single click.

    Cylinders

Example of stuffing box performance by system oil leak rate per unit

Close attention needs to be given to the cylinder lu-brication of low-speed two-stroke engines in orderto ensure engine lubrication and prevent corrosivewear of the cylinder liner.

The Sulphur content in the fuel composition in usemay be as high as 4%. Burning high Sulphur fuelsleads to the formation of highly acidic components, which cause severe corrosion when making contactwith the metal surface of the cylinder liner. Wear oncylinder liners and piston rings is mainly attributedto these acid attacks and is called corrosive wear.Under slow steaming conditions the risk of corrosivewear is even higher. The need for correct cylinder oillubrication is evident, which is the need to choose a

lubricant with an alkalinity reserve that matches theSulphur content of the fuel.

A different form of wear generally occurs from rub-bing surfaces of moving metallic components, whichcan lead to adhesive and, finally, abrasive wear andscuffing. Possible causes of liner polishing and scuffingare inadequate oil film formation, water ingress oroil film disturbance by either poor injection or com-bustion quality or excessive deposits on the top landof the piston.

In addition to choosing suitable lubricants, optimizingthe feed rate is another critical factor of wear control.Excessive feed rates and the resulting over-lubrica-

tion are equally harmful as a lack of neutralizationcapacity and inadequate oil film distribution causedby insufficient feed rates or inadequate lubricants.Feed rate optimization is done by a set of tests during a procedure which is called the Sweep Test.

During this test the engine is run at different feedrates while all other operational conditions remainunchanged. Ideally, the test is carried out while run-ning on high Sulphur fuel (around 3.5%) and athigh load to make sure the established feed rate covers the entire load and fuel range.

Considering the complex chemical properties of modern lubricants, major engine manufacturers

recommend to assess the individual feed rate foreach oil brand, viscosity class and BN level.

    Benefits of CSA

    • Optimized engine operation though oil condition monitoring

    • Improved operational safety with reduced risk of machinery breakdown

    • Savings on cylinder oil and system oil costs

    • Extended time between overhauls• Savings on spare parts and maintenance• Reduced risk of off-hire

Optimizing the cylinder oil feed ratemeans optimizing the engine’s opera-tional safety and efficiency.

Regular visual inspection is essential inorder to ensure safe engine operation.

  • Air pollution can be defined as the presence of pol-luting constituents in concentrations above averageand high enough to have harmful impacts on human, plant or animal life. These constituents are generatedby natural processes or by human activity. Soil andwater pollution occurs in similar ways.

Environmental pollution can be counteracted by theenvironmental protection rules and requirements(tolerable limits, monitoring frequency) for certaincontaminants identified by environmental controlbodies. Well-equipped and experienced third partylaboratories play an important part in pollution moni-toring studies.

ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY ANALYSIS FIRE FIGHTING FOAM TESTS

Ambient air consists of 21% Oxygen, 78% Nitrogenand the remaining 1% is Argon, Carbon dioxide,Neon, Helium, Methane and others. In addition tothese components, there are trace amounts of pol-lutants in the air.

The fact that we can survive about five weeks with-out food, five days without water but struggle to survive even five minutes without air underlines itssignificance. Air is essential for smelling and hearingand it is of such vital importance that air pollutionhas come to everyone’s attention.
