Reliability and The Pathway to
Performance
Raised Expectations
• Increasing customer expectations• Expecting “terrestrial-like” experience over satellite backhaul, Download
throughput performance requirements evolving from a few 100 kb/s-Mb/s
to several 10 Mbps (Fast Broadband Internet Access, LTE).
• Fibre doesn’t break when it rains.
• Blockages? RF sizing? Why is that my problem?
• Users don’t care satellite is different, nor should they have
to, but …
– Blockages are real and need managing.
– Physics, gets in the way.
– Web sites complexity has grown: 4 years ago, average website size
was 750kB and consisted of 20-30 objects. Today, average website in
2MB+ and consist of 200+ objects across dozens of domain/hosts.
Optimisation matters.

Comtech WANOp Solution
Key Benefits & Differentiators
Superior WANOp Performances
• “Pay-as-you-grow” TCP sessions based licensing
– No limitation on bandwidth / throughput
• Superior Turbostreaming© Performance Enhancement Proxy [PEP]
– Faster web browsing and a better user experience
• Intelligent DNS Caching
– More efficient than Client’s PC or smartphone web browser cache,
– Run through tunnelled end-user traffic (MPLS VPN, 4G LTE & 3G GTP)
• “Fill-the-Pipe”: Modem driven real-time dynamic traffic shaping
– always match the available baseband transmit link capacity of the modem
• Operate on ISP, VPN and Mobile (4G) traffic concurrently

Comtech WANOp Solution
Key Benefits & DifferentiatorsSuperior Network Operation
• 100% Layer-2 / Layer 3 Transparency “PEP-on-a-wire”:
– “one-touch” simple configuration,
– customer network & traffic transparency (VLANs, MPLS, IP routing,…)
– support for Jumbo frames
• Multi-Gigabit Scalability that meets new HTS satellite capacity
– Wide range of integrated and standalone appliances,
– HX load balancer scales satellite link speed and PEP capacity up to 5 Gbs
• High Availability Carrier Grade Solution
– Fail to Wire
– System Redundancy
– End-to-end path redundancy
• State of the Art Service Provider NMS (NetVue)
– Integrated management with Comtech’s satcom products (RF, modems)
15Comtech EFData Proprietary and Confidential Information – June 2017
• TCP acceleration (PEP) breaks the long latency end-to-end TCP control loops into
several control loops by intercepting and relaying TCP connections within the network.
• Comtech patented Turbostreaming© solution also adds specific mechanisms (like Fast
Start, larger buffer, and TCP session control bandwidth management) to mitigate the
satellite link long latency and effect of packet loss / retransmissions over satellite.
TCP Acceleration (PEP) [Performance Enhancement Proxy]
With TCP Acceleration – mitigates satellite link latency for TCP applications
Comtech PEP enables TCP acceleration (PEP) across any Layer 2/3 protocol stacks, including MPLS/VPN and 4G/LTE backhaul

About Comtech Turbostreaming©
PEP Solution• Standard PEP
– Most vendors use SCPS-TP* implementation. SCPS-TP is good for single long file
transfers (FTP) but not designed for today’s “busy” web browsing where there are
many objects to download (short file transfers): each object download on a web page
has to go through a 2 or 3-Way Handshake (= 3 x round trip time – nearly 2seconds)
before any bytes start being transferred
– SCPS-TP implementation relies also on over-sized buffer window size (4 MB up to
16MB) to achieve high throughput FTP file transfer, resulting in a huge buffer being
held “in the sky”, which is an issue in case of packet loss (buffer re-transmission)
• Comtech’s patented TurboStreaming PEP– Comtech’s TCP PEP Persistency solution reduces time to first byte object download
by 50% allowing faster web page display.
– Comtech’s TCP PEP Multiplexing solution allows to accelerate FTP file transfer and
object download up to 5 times while keeping buffer size “reasonable” (2 MB).

Note (*): SCPS-TP is an enhanced TCP protocol stack that has been standardized by the US DoD several years ago.
