Course Description Withovertwobillionadherentsaroundtheglobe,Christianityisthemostpopulousreligionintheworld.Ithasalsobecomehighlydiversethroughitsintersectionswithdifferentsocietiesandcultures.Thiscoursewillexplorethesecomplexitiesthroughaninvestigationofthefaithfromthesixteenthcenturytothepresent.Specialattentionwillbegiventoexaminingthesocial,historical,andtheologicaldevelopmentswithinWesternChristianityanditsemergenceasaglobalfaith.

Course Objectives Uponsuccessfulcompletionofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:1.evaluatethemajorsocial,historical,andtheologicalissuesinmodernChristianity2.demonstrateknowledgeofthehistoryandcharacterofglobalChristianities3.developanalyticalarguments,bothorallyandinwriting,thatcriticallyengagemodern Christianhistoryandliterature

Blog Posts Throughouttheterm,studentswillberesponsibleforpostinganalyticalreflectionsonthedailyreadingstotheclasswebsite.Thesepostswillformthefoundationforclassdiscussionandmustbesubmittedatleast12hoursbeforeclasssothatthestudent’sTeamcanpreparethoughtfulreflectionsforclass.

Subject Quizzes Therewillbethreequizzesthroughoutthetermcoveringmaterialfromthereadingsandclassdiscussions.Quizzeswillcontainbothobjectiveandshortresponsequestions.

Final Exam ThefinalexamwilltakeplaceonJune10.Oneweekbeforetheexam,theinstructorwilldistributeastudyguidelistingobjectivetopicsandtwoessayquestions.Studentsshouldpreparethoughtfulresponsestothesequestionsbasedonthereadingsandclassdiscussions.Eachexamwillconsistofoneoftheessaysandaseriesofobjectivequestions.Make-upexamswillbegivenonlyinextraordinarycircumstances.

Research Project Eachstudentwillcompletearesearchproject(approximately2,000words)thatexamineseitheraseminaltextorinfluentialfilmrelatedtomodernChristianity.Theinstructorwillprovidealistoftopics,academicresources,andinstructionsforcompletingtheproject.StudentsmustsignupforaprojectonCanvasbyApril7.

Attendance BecausetheTeam-BasedLearningmodelwillshapetheclasslearningenvironment,attendanceisessential.

Participation ThistermwewillorganizeclasssessionsaccordingtotheTeam-BasedLearningmodel.EachstudentwillbepartofacollaborativeteamthatwillworktogethertoexplorequestionsandproblemsinthestudyofmodernChristianity.Participationconsistsofactiveengagementinandpositivecontributionstoallclassactivities.Effortandpersistencewillberewardedaccordingly.
