Redefining Learning and Teaching for the 21st Century:
September 1st PD Day
Thank you very much for the great PD day. Both guest speakers were wonderful and provided a much
needed infusion of thought provoking information for all of us. -Principal
Thanks for a great day! Perfect way to start the year...kudos! –Secondary Teacher
Wow! That was such a great day! Those 2 speakers were amazing! So thought provoking! –Elementary Teacher I thought it appropriate to commend you on the choice of keynote speakers today. They were both very engaging. Easily the most riveting PD of my career. Thanks for day! –Elementary Teacher Awesome day! Bravo on challenging us in thinking today! Great Start! –Twitter You can’t learn until you make mistakes! Growth mindset is powerful –Twitter Where is the emotion in learning? We need to use technology to solve pedagogical problems. Such a provoking keynote! –Twitter The workshops were awesome. 3 Act Math has changed how I will teach Math-Elementary Teacher After I learned about 3 Act Math, I want to teacher grade 9 applied math again. –Secondary Teacher The questions are more important than the answers. –Twitter Teaching coding in schools is not good enough. We should be moving to a model of trilingualism …French, English, and Code. –Twitter
On Thursday, September 1, 2016 we hosted 700+ educators at THVS for a day of inspiration, and learning. The above quotes are from educators who attended the full day event focused on why we need to change teaching and learning for our students, based on how the world is rapidly changing, and how we can change using technology as a tool to enhance students’ abilities. We think the voices of educators demonstrate the positive response to the day. The first keynote speaker, Leonard Brody, a successful business leader, kick-started the day by sharing his thoughts on how the world is being rewritten by rapid changes in technology, and social drivers. Mr. Brody set the foundation for why education needs to change to help our students be successful in an unknown future. The second keynote speaker, Dr. Shawn Lennie, an Apple Development Executive, provided an entertaining keynote that showed us a possible model for how we could change education for students by using challenge based learning (CBL). Challenge based learning is a model where students tackle a local issue, challenge, or problem that matters to them. To understand the challenge, students have to go beyond the walls of their classroom, to learn from the broader community. As a class, they come up with solutions to the challenge and implement those solutions back in the community. Educators were then able to choose from 80+ workshops that showed them innovative ways they could leverage
technology, and good teaching, to support student learning. The amazing thing about the workshops was that 68 of
the presenters were from our own board, and only 12 external presenters were used. We are so proud of our local
teachers who were willing to share the great things they were doing in their classrooms.

AGENDA REF. NO. 2016 09 06 TO THE CHAIR AND TRUSTEES OF DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD ONTARIO NORTH EAST RE: REVISED: Policy 1.2.34 Growing Success Our Policy has been revised to align with both the Ministry Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting in Ontario’s Schools, Kindergarten to Grade 12 and Growing Success – The Kindergarten Addendum: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting in Ontario Schools, 2016. DSB Ontario North East is committed to providing all students with the curriculum, programming, and opportunities to enable them to reach their full potential. Further support documents enhancing our Policy include the Administrator School Attendance Tool Kit (2016-2017) and the Student Success Teacher and Team Manual 2016-2017. The following extract from the Rationale of our policy summarizes the Board’s commitment to improve student learning: District School Board Ontario North East approves a student assessment, evaluation, and reporting policy that is applied consistently to the Kindergarten Program and throughout Grades 1-12. This policy meets the provincial policy for assessment, evaluation, and reporting required in Growing Success and provincial curriculum expectations and achievement levels outlined in the elementary and secondary curriculum. … In District School Board Ontario North East, it is expected that assessment, evaluation, and reporting practice is based on evidence of student achievement of the provincial curriculum expectations and alternative curriculum expectations, where appropriate, and student demonstration of learning skills and work habits.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board approve the revisions to Policy 1.2.34, Growing Success.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda L. Knight Director of Education

RECOMMENDATION: That the Board approve the second and third (final) reading of the new Policy 1.1.7, Selection of the Director of Education.
