course highlights This course is designed specifically to address many of the challenges the experienced practitioner encounters in caring for this special patient population. This course highlights an interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation of the head and neck cancer patient. Cutting edge conservation surgical and nonsurgical treatments along with their corresponding functional outcomes and evidence-based interventions will be discussed. This course emphasizes the contributions of ancillary services in overall patient outcomes. Particular attention will be paid to the latest advances in evidence based practice as it relates to organ preservation protocols and their subsequent speech and swallowing outcomes. Chronic problems related to tracheoesophageal puncture will be explored in light of new techniques and procedural advancements. To integrate course concepts, attendees will participate in panel discussions and case presentations.
course objectivesAfter completion, participants will be able to:• Identify modern radiation therapy protocols and their subsequent
functional outcomes• Identify the considerations and outcomes of a tracheoesophageal
puncture (TEP) in the salvage total laryngectomy(TL)• Identify two surgical considerations for total glossectomy• Identify two ways to introduce pulmonary rehabilitation to the TL
immediately post operatively• Identify two risk factors that may increase risk of readmission
following TL• Explain two considerations for early feeding following TL• Explain candidacy for myofascial release intervention in the H &
N population• Explain three considerations for swallowing following total
glossectomy• Describe two possible changes to tissue following exposure to
XRT• Describe how to identify, prevent and treat possible speech and
swallowing deficits associated with organ preservation protocols• Explain the clinical application of transoral robotic surgery
(TORS) and translaser management (TLM) and their subsequent outcomes
• Describe the potential etiologies for an enlarged TE tract and the various prosthetic, surgical and medical treatments as outlined in the literature
• Describe the causes, impact and treatment approaches of lymphedema
• Explain the need for a prophylactic swallowing exercise program for head and neck cancer patients undergoing organ preservation treatments
• Explain the rationale for immediate post-laryngectomy pulmonary rehabilitation
• Describe the various challenges for the complicated head and neck patient
• Describe surgical and nonsurgical interventions for dysphagia in the head and neck cancer patient
