DR. GARY HASEY Dr. Hasey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences and a member of the School of Biomedical Engineering at McMaster University. His medical and psychiatric training began at the University of Alberta. Further studies into the neuropathology and treatment of mood disorders continued at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Toronto. He is currently the Director of the ECT program at McMaster University where he also established Canada’s first therapeutic transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) Laboratory. Dr. Hasey’s current research studies focus upon optimizing the efficacy of various treatments for mood disorder through collaborative work with the engineering department. With his engineering colleagues he is developing an automated digital psychiatric expert system capable of analyzing EEG and clinical data to determine psychiatric diagnosis and predict response to TMS, antidepressant medication, antipsychotic medica-

tion and cognitive behaviour therapy.

DR. PAULA RAVITZDr. Ravitz is an Associate Professor, Head of the Psychotherapy Program and Head of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) Program for the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. She is director of the Mount Sinai Psychotherapy Institute. Her academic focus is on the practice, teaching, program development and research of psychotherapy. One of her priorities as a clinical educator has been to disseminate evidence-based psychotherapies, teaching workshops in IPT internationally and working with the Ontario Psychiatric Outreach Programme on an educational outreach project for

front-line mental health workers in Canadian Mental Health Association northern branches.

DR. MICHAEL RACHLISDr. Michael Rachlis was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1951 and graduated from the University of Manitoba medical school in 1975. He interned at McMaster University and then practiced family medicine at the South Riverdale Community Health Centre in Toronto for eight years. He completed training in Community Medicine at McMaster and was made a fellow of the Canadian Royal College of Physicians in 1988.Dr. Rachlis practices as a private consultant in health policy analysis. He has consulted to the federal government, all ten provincial governments, and two royal commissions. He also holds an adjunct as-sociate professor appointment with the University of Toronto Department of Health, Policy, Manage-ment and Evaluation and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. In 2010, the University of Manitoba conferred upon Dr. Rachlis a doctor of laws (honoris causa) in recognition of his service to Canadian health policy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES1) Participants will be able to grasp the basic concept of machine learning.2) Participants will be able to understand how machine learning can assist with diagnostic formulation.3) Participants will be able to understand how machine learning can assist with treatment planning.4) Participants will know the background and rationale of IPT including the basics of attachment theory.5) Participants will use IPT therapeutic guidelines to help patients with interpersonal problems of loss, change and conflict.6) Participants will apply communication analysis as a means to identify problematic patterns of inter actions and to engage patients in a process of interpersonal change.7) Participants will understand the historical development of Canadian public health insurance.8) Participants will appreciate the weaknesses and strengths of Canada’s health system.9) Participants will understand how the reform of Ontario’s mental health system is tied to evolution of the province’s health policy .
