Before You Start...

Considerations for Your Future You are an individual, and you have your own needs, interests, and talents. In high school you will discover more about yourself; what you are good at and what you enjoy. It’s a good idea to take some time now to do some thinking about your personal goals. It is also time to, realistically, look at your abilities and your potential. This may help you plan your high school programming. This booklet was created to help you see how you can keep your options open and explore areas that interest you. To begin, you may want to discuss your plans with people who know you well; your parents/guardians, teachers, counsellors, and friends. Consider the following questions:

Why do I want my High School Diploma? What will it do for me? Do I need it as a “stepping stone” to further study or to the job market?

How much time/effort am I willing to invest in the process? My best effort? Remember, the education focus you choose should be considered as your full-time job.

What’s most important to me now - the social life, sports, part-time job, or the courses I choose. How will I do? How does my input and my marks to date reflect the pathway choice I am considering? How do my choices fit into my career plans? My life goals? (Remember high school is only three years out of my

whole life). Make positive choices! Some sacrifices may be necessary depending on what you want to accomplish in the next few years. You have a

limited amount of time available. Efficient time management will be essential!

Be Realistic – so that YOU will be successful!

What About Unassigned Time? There is a possibility, especially for Grade 12 students, that you may have open spaces or unassigned time in your timetable. During these time periods, you will have no assigned classes. This time is provided for study, research or homework. Use this time wisely and to your best advantage! Perhaps the key to your spare time should lie in the concept of “an honest day’s work” - keeping in mind that the school is your place of work. Make sure you use your time in a responsible manner. If students have failed classes in grade 10 and grade 11 the privilege of unassigned times will not be available.

About Choosing Courses There are two (2) types of courses:

Core Courses: courses you must take (Religion, English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education)

Option Courses: courses you choose to take Grade 10 students must take a full 8 blocks; Grade 11 students must take a minimum of 7 1/2 blocks; Grade 12 students must take a minimum 4 blocks each semester. To assist in planning your high school programming, follow these steps: 1. Decide which route you would like to take to complete the requirements for your diploma.

Academic Route or Non-Academic Route (each is based on your historical academic performance) Review the course descriptions on the following pages. Make your decision about the route you want to take based on your past success in these subjects and on your plans for your future.

2. Decide which CORE courses you will take.

Core courses are available at two or three levels of difficulty, depending on the route you wish to follow. NOTE: There is a downside to timetable changes once the school year has started! It may cost you extra time and effort. Therefore, plan CAREFULLY at the beginning and commit to a program for the entire year. Semestering may provide for more flexibility, but there are no guarantees that there will always be openings in the second semester course(s) you want. Changes are best done at the completion of a course. Changing routes may require taking additional courses.

New Grade 10 Students MUST register in:

Religious Studies (3 credits)

English (5 credits)

Social Studies (5 credits)

Mathematics ( 5 credits)

Science (5 credits)

Physical Education (3 or 5 credits) *Information Processing 10 (3 credits), is recommended as a grade 10 option. You must register in sufficient number of option courses to complete 8 blocks (NO SPARES)

3. Decide which OPTION courses you want to take to complete your programming

The courses are grouped into the following specialities. Circle those you would be interested in taking.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

FINE ARTS: Music, Art, Drama

SECOND LANGUAGES: French, Italian, Spanish, Ukrainian

SCIENCE: Forensics in grade 11 or 12

CAREER & TECHNOLOGY STUDIES (C.T.S.): Design Studies, Communication Technology, Career Transitions, Community Health, Management & Marketing, Networking, Financial Management, Information Processing, Computer Science, Legal Studies, Information Technology, Journalism, Sports Medicine, Cosmetology, Fashion Studies, Foods, Construction/Fabrication, and Mechanics. Things to consider when choosing options courses...

Which option courses will help me prepare for my career?

Which option courses seem interesting and would broaden my personal skills?

Which option courses will meet the requirements of the university, college or technical school of my choice?

Course Pathways All programs of study at Archbishop O’Leary High School lead to an Alberta High School Diploma. Course selection and grades determine post-secondary options and need to be considered at even the earliest point of high school entry. Four pathways of study exist at Archbishop O’Leary High School: 1. Non-academic - The 10-3, 20-3, 30-3, and 14 - 24 sequences are considered the non-academic pathway/stream. 2. General Study – leads to entry into a trade, business or work force. The 10-2, 20-2, 30-2 sequence is considered the general pathway/stream. 3. Academic Study – leads to post-secondary study at most post-secondary institutions. The 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 sequence is considered the academic pathway/stream in most courses. 4. Honours / Advanced Placement Study – lead to advanced post-secondary opportunities and provide a comprehensive educational experience with opportunities for post-secondary credit. The 10-1 H/AP, 20-1 H/AP, 30-1 H/AP sequence is considered the advanced academic pathway/stream in most courses.

Please Note: For grade ten and eleven students, a specific grade is required for the student to be eligible to register in the subsequent level if the student is registered in the academic pathway/stream. This requirement exists for English, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science. Statistics show that students with less than 60% in the prerequisite course are unsuccessful in obtaining credit in the subsequent course. Special entry guidelines have been established for registration in some courses at O’Leary. For example, students registered in English 10-1 should be in Social Studies 10-1 and those registered in English 10-2 should be in Social Studies 10-2, and those registered in Math 14 should be in Science 14. These situations are explained in more detail on the following page.

Retroactive Credits Students achieving between 40% and 49% in English, Social Studies, Mathematics, or the Sciences may choose to 1) repeat the course or, 2) choose to continue in a lower alternative course pathway. Students who successfully complete this lower level course shall be granted credit in the prerequisite course of the lower pathway. The awarding of retroactive credits is automatically done by Alberta Education when the next level course in an alternative pathway is successfully passed. The following chart demonstrates this aspect:

Example:

A student receives a final mark in Social Studies 10-1 between 40 – 49% (no credit earned for Social Studies 10-1).

The student enrols in the lower alternative pathway of Social Studies 20-2 and receives a final mark over 50% (5 credit earned for Social Studies 20-2).

The student automatically receives 5 retroactive credits for Social Studies 10-2.

Honours & Advanced Placement Programs At Archbishop O’Leary High School our Honours and Advanced Placement (AP) programs are designed to encourage and support students with academic gifts. It is expected that students applying to take these courses will have an 80% average or higher in any prerequisite class.

Honours Program Honours courses are organized to prepare students, not only for diploma exams but also for postsecondary institutions.

These classes are made up of students who wish to excel in their high school careers, and wish to be surrounded by like-

minded students. Honours classes are available in many of the core academic classes at O'Leary. Please see the specific

subject areas for descriptions of the honours courses they offer.

Some students are worried that honours courses will require more work, or will lower their marks and jeopardize their

chances of being admitted to post-secondary programs or obtaining scholarships. At O'Leary the teachers are aware of

these student concerns regarding marks. In order to facilitate fairness in marking, those students are not "marked

harder" and complete the same assignments as the regular classes. If any additional work is done to expand beyond the

regular course work, it is most often marked as bonus work (at the teacher's discretion). As well, honours students write

the same final exams as students taking the regular course.

Students thinking of taking an honours course should realize that it is not all about marks. The student should be capable

of working on their own and with other students. They should also be self-motivated, have strong work habits and be

self-disciplined.

Because the teachers have an expectation that honours students will be able to understand concepts more quickly, the

pace of these classes is usually faster. The benefit to this is that it allows for extra time in order to have more in-depth

discussions or do additional bonus activities for fun.

Advanced Placement Program

Archbishop O'Leary is proud to offer College Board Advanced Placement (AP) courses. At the completion of these

courses (typically in Grade 12) students write a College Board exam in the month of May. At O'Leary there is no cost to

the students for writing AP exams.

Students at O'Leary can complete AP courses in:

Biology

Calculus

Computer Science

English

Environmental Science*

European History*

Psychology

Spanish Language & Culture

Statistics

Studio Art * Online instruction through Revelation Online with in school support

Page 13: Registration Booklet - ecsd.net...Your Choices, Your Career and Your Future. At Archbishop O ’Le ary High School, We ’re Here To Make YOU The Best! Archbishop O’Leary High School

Archbishop O’Leary High School Page 13 Registration Booklet 2016-2017

Students may also challenge certain AP exams in other subject areas to earn credit. One popular choice is AP Spanish

Language and Culture. Please speak to the AP coordinator about this early in the school year (before November) to

make certain that you qualify to challenge the exam, and make arrangements for an exam to be available.

Registration in AP courses requires the students to start the AP pathway in Grade 10 and follow through in Grades 11

and 12. Students are expected to maintain a mark of 80% or higher to remain in the AP courses. Please see the

individual course listings for complete details in each subject area, or contact the school to speak to the AP Coordinator.

When the student writes an AP exam in May, they will receive a mark from the College Board between 1 and 5. If the

exam is taken in a course that corresponds to a 30 level Diploma course, the AP mark might be able to be used for

University applications. For example, at the U of A the marks are equivalent based on the following table...

AP Exam Mark Description U of A Admission % Equivalent

5 Extremely Well Qualified 96

4 Well Qualified 86

3 Qualified 76

2 Possibly Qualified 65

1 No Recommendation not accepted

If a student is successful in an AP course (usually with a mark of 4 or 5) it is possible to earn:

transfer credits: the post-secondary institution will grant credit for a junior level course as though it had been completed at that institution.

advanced placement: although credit is not awarded for the junior level course, the student may register for a more senior level course as though the prerequisite was completed.

credit by special assessment (CSA): the student will be allowed to write a special exam to earn credit in a class. Exposure to university course material has benefits beyond these three options. Many students who complete the AP courses will actually decline to take the transfer credit offered and still enroll to take the introductory courses. This is because they have already been exposed to the material through the AP courses and therefore excel in the university classes. Although the AP courses do include additional material beyond the Alberta curriculum, all the courses offered at O'Leary

are arranged so that students will not have their regular class marks penalized. Instead, these students can expect to do

better because of the AP material. This is because the evaluation of the AP material is usually considered to be used for

bonus marks or to replace lower marks students have in regular course work (at the teacher's discretion). The additional

exposure to advanced topics will also improve their preparation for regular finals, such as the Alberta Diploma exams.

The AP exams themselves do not have any factor in calculating the students' Alberta final course marks.

English Language Arts

NOTE: English AP courses are intended for students who have achieved 80% or have received a teacher recommendation. THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS The senior high school English language arts program highlights six language arts—listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing. Senior high school students engage all six language arts as they study texts and as they create their own texts in relevant situations for a variety of purposes and audiences. All of the language arts are interrelated and interdependent; facility in one strengthens and supports facility in the others. SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS COURSE PATHWAYS Two course sequences have been developed in order to accommodate a diverse range of student needs, interests, and aspirations — English Language Arts 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 and English Language Arts 10-2, 20-2, 30-2. Both course sequences are organized according to the Program of Studies Outcomes and have been designed to meet graduation requirements. ENGLISH 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 COURSE PATHWAY The focus of the English 10-1, 20-1, and 30-1 course sequence is to develop the writing and analytical skills of students. It aims to help students prepare for future post-secondary university studies. In the 10-1, 20-1, and 30-1 course sequence, the program provides a more in-depth study of the literary text. Students in the ELA 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 course sequence are expected to understand the subtle nuances and symbolic language found in increasingly sophisticated literary texts. To do this successfully, these students are expected to develop close reading skills in order to understand contextual elements and subtext. In addition to developing reading comprehension skills, students in the ELA 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 course sequence may need to develop or improve critical and analytical reading skill. Within the increased emphasis on textual analysis, the students’ responses focus on the study of essays and critical/analytical responses to challenging texts as the central focus. Through thematic and literary genre studies, students are encouraged to develop an appreciation for literature, to become confident and competent in various forms of written expression, and to listen and speak with understanding. Through exposure to various forms of literature and other texts in the various genres and media, students are encouraged to improve their ability to think clearly, both orally and in non-written form, and to listen, view and read with discrimination. ENGLISH 10-2, 20-2, 30-2 COURSE PATHWAY The focus of the English 10-2, 20-2, and 30-2 course sequence is to help prepare students in the practical applications of English. It aims to help students prepare for future post-secondary college studies. The 10-2, 20-2, and 30-2 course sequence has a greater degree of emphasis on responses to print and non-print texts other than literary texts. Emphasis is given to the study of popular nonfiction (news stories, feature articles, reviews, interviews and other forms of informative and persuasive text, including technical writing) and feature films.

Page 20: Registration Booklet - ecsd.net...Your Choices, Your Career and Your Future. At Archbishop O ’Le ary High School, We ’re Here To Make YOU The Best! Archbishop O’Leary High School

Archbishop O’Leary High School Page 20 Registration Booklet 2016-2017

The 10-2, 20-2, 30-2 course sequence places a greater degree of emphasis on the creation of personal responses to contexts. Through thematic and literary genre studies, students are encouraged to develop an appreciation for literature, to become confident in various forms of written expression, and to listen and speak with understanding and confidence. Through exposure to various forms of literature and other texts in the various genres and media, students are encouraged to improve their ability to think clearly, both orally and in non-written form, and to listen, view and read with discrimination. Students who are interested in the study, creation and analysis of literary texts may prefer to take the 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 course sequence. Students who are interested in the study of popular culture and in real-world contexts may prefer to take the 10-2, 20-2,30-2 course sequence. Not all post-secondary institutions, however, accept ELA 30-2 for entry. In general, students who plan to attend a post-secondary institution, regardless of their specific career aspirations, need to familiarize themselves with the entry requirements of the institution and program they plan to enter. For students who require ELA 30-1 to enter a post-secondary program and are registered in the ELA 10-2, 20-2, 30-2 course sequence, the preferred transfer point to the other course sequence is at the 20-level, depending on the student’s ability. Students who meet the requirements may decide to take ELA 20-2, transfer to the other course sequence and take ELA 20-1, and then take ELA 30-1. Students generally experience more success following this pathway. ENGLISH ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) Within the framework of the Alberta Curriculum expectations, the AP program provides students with a wide variety of forms and genres in literature. Students examine forms that include reviews, formal and informal essays, reader response pieces and transactional writing focused on a specific purpose and audience. In the study of these genres, students both analyze and create examples of these types of literature. Students will also undertake more traditional literary analysis, continuing to study sophisticated and complex works from a variety of genres, including fiction, poetry, and drama, in addition to critical approaches in responding to these texts. Students continue to explore the elements of style, through both analysis and creative exercises. Students are encouraged to evaluate as well as describe texts and to develop critical and personal responses to the material. The writing program of AP emphasizes the development of the scholarly argument with an assertive, reasonable, and defensible thesis. Essays are analytical and/or issue-oriented. Students are required to form arguments by researching critical positions, by using secondary sources to complement the primary text, and by documenting those sources in an appropriate manner. They are asked to apply to their own writing their skills at evaluating the effectiveness of various forms and literary devices. Creative writing, journal writing, and the response essay are also used as means of exploring the texts. Students develop the technique of writing short focused essays (300-500 words) that are typically required as responses on external examinations such as Advanced Placement Examinations. In addition, attention is paid to the technique of answering multiple choice questions used in the Advancement Placement Examination and the Alberta Diploma Exams. ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (E.L.L.) 10 TRANSITION COURSE (5 credits) The purpose of “English Language Learner” programming at O’Leary is to prepare students, whose first language is not English, for the demands of high school. The ELL program will provide a small group environment where beginner through advanced students will be given the opportunity to become involved with and further practice the English language. Students will be provided with the linguistic resources to both support and master grade level learning in all subject areas.

Social Studies

NOTE: Students may move from one social studies course pathway to another in the following manner: if a student has over 75% in Social Studies 10-2, 20-2 or 30-2, they may then enrol in Social Studies 10-1, 20-1 or 30-1 as indicated above. FAST-TRACK SOCIAL STUDIES 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 (15 credits)

Students with an average of over 85% in Grade 9 Social Studies will now have an opportunity to take SS10-1, SS20-1 and SS30-1 all in ONE YEAR. Each course will be scheduled for a trimester. The abbreviated time for each course would mean that only top academic students would be considered for this unique venture. With 3 courses completed in basically 2 semesters, there would be much more flexibility in a students' high school program. With all their Social Studies requirements completed in Grade 10, it would give students the opportunity to focus on their other subjects. As an example, it would be much easier for a student to fit in 2 or 3 Science courses in Grade 11 and/or Grade 12. O'Leary Social Studies teachers will work collaboratively to ensure students are successful in this opportunity that is only open to students at O'Leary due to the school involvement in the High School Flexibility Enhancement Pilot Project with Alberta Education. SOCIAL STUDIES 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 SOCIAL STUDIES 10-1H, 20-1H, 30-1H (5 credits each) These courses are aimed at students who are in the academic route wish to meet university entrance requirements. Prerequisite for registration into this stream is a mark of 60% or better in Grade 9 Social Studies. It is also requires that students maintain a mark of at least 60% in order to advance to the subsequent course in the stream. It is also assumed that students in this stream are also in a 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 program in English, as there is a substantial written component in the academic route. (If your grade nine Social Studies was 80% or better you should consider the Social Studies 10 H, 20 H, 30 H stream)

DRAMA The overall goal of drama is to foster a positive self-concept in students by encouraging them to explore life by the assumption of roles and by the acquisition of dramatic skills. The environment is comfortable and will challenge your imagination. As students progress through the dramatic forms of expression at the secondary level, greater emphasis is placed upon the development of the individual as a creator, performer, historian, critic, and patron. The Drama 10 courses are prerequisites for the Drama 20 courses, and Drama 20 courses are prerequisites for Drama 30. DRAMA 10, 20, 30 (3 & 5 credits) The rationale in the Drama 10, 20, and 30 is an overall goal to foster a positive self-concept in students by en- couraging them to explore life by the assumption of roles and by the acquisition of dramatic skills. The imaginative exploration involves setting up a dramatic situation, “acting out” that situation, communicating within that situation and reflecting on the consequences. It is this reflection that provides the knowledge for self-development. As students progress through the dramatic forms of expression at the secondary level, greater emphasis is placed upon the development of the individual as a creator, performer, historian, critic and patron. Here, the self- development and socialization processes of the student are extended by developing an appreciation of theatre as a traditional art form. PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE ACADEMY 15, 25, 35 (15 credits) Production/Performance academy was developed to introduce students to all forms of theatre production ranging from Technical theatre to advanced acting. Students will acquire knowledge and skills beyond the regular Drama classroom through the production and development of a school musical. Students will workshop various aspects of the theatre to build skills that will enable them to produce a spring musical. Participants in the academy will receive credit in Drama, Technical Theatre, advanced acting, Musical theatre, and dance performance.

PAID CAREER TRAINING BEFORE YOU LEAVE SCHOOL... POST-SECONDARY WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL R.A.P…

IT’S LIKE HAVING IT ALL! What is R.A.P.? The Registered Apprenticeship Program (R.A.P.) is a program where you, as a registered high school student, can become an apprentice and earn credits toward your apprenticeship and your high school diploma at the same time. Talk about having it all! What’s an apprentice? An apprentice is someone learning a trade while he or she is employed in that trade. Usually, apprenticeship is post- secondary training. But the Registered Apprenticeship Program (R.A.P.) is a special program that allows you to start your apprenticeship during high school. What’s apprenticeship? Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training, work experience and technical training in a trade. Apprentices spend about 80% of the time learning on the job from a qualified tradesperson. The remaining 20% of their time is spent at a college or technical institute learning the theory, technologies and skills behind their trade. This is called the technical training component of the program. The entire program lasts from 1 to 4 years, depending on the trade. From the start, apprentices earn a pay cheque for their time on-the-job. As a R.A.P. apprentice you would earn at least minimum wage, with the pay increasing as the training progresses. Once your apprenticeship is complete, you will

receive an “Alberta Journeyman Certificate” which proves you meet Alberta’s high industry standards. There are more than 50 apprenticeship trades and crafts in Alberta. How can I do work and school at the same time? R.A.P. is an agreement between you, your employer and your school. The idea is for all parties to be flexible. Your hours of work depend on the agreement, but they could involve:

working as a R.A.P. apprentice for one semester, and going to school the next

working half-a-day and going to school the other half

working during the summer, on holidays and weekends, and attending school during the regular term

working one or two days a week and going to school on other days Everyone has responsibilities R.A.P. is a “real-world” program. You become a regular employee and be expected to attend on time, and complete your work safely and efficiently. You’ll be expected to focus on learning the required skills from your journeyman supervisor. In return, your employer will pay you as a R.A.P. apprentice, give you the agreed flexibility in work hours, provide you with the training you require, update your apprenticeship record book, and stay in touch with your school. “OK, I’m interested. What next?” See Mr. Fausto Filice or Mr. Jon Gagliardi in Student Services.

Cosmetology Apprenticeship

The Cosmetology Department at Archbishop O'Leary High School is proud to announce the completion of our first cohort of students participating in the Career Hairstyling Apprenticeship program. This program was created with the vision of equipping students to transition into the work world as qualified professionals without the stress of post-secondary tuition costs. By building on their previous knowledge acquired in Cosmetology 10, 20, and 30, the program allows students to complete their training with in their high school setting, thus providing personalized learning opportunities. Like a traditional post-secondary institution for hairstyling, Archbishop O'Leary High School allows students to complete the first and second period of their Alberta Apprenticeship training, while working toward achieving an Alberta Hairstyling Journeyman ticket. The next step for our new stylists is to begin their Apprenticeships in a salon environment where they will then complete the required hours to gain their accreditation. We at O'Leary couldn't be more proud of these ladies! The quality of work they are providing and their enthusiasm for the industry is truly exceptional. We look forward to seeing our students move forward in their careers and represent the Spartan Hair Academy while exuding their passion, drive, and talent.
