In the past years, there has been an increasing need to understand the risks linked to human activity, use and abuse of drugs, chemical handling and exposure, and/or environmental impact. When we talk about risk assessment and hazard identification, a toxicologist is the right expert to call.
In Spain there were several incidents related to food (altered oil scandal), environment (soil contamina-tion) and poisonings (clinical and forensic). To tackle these challenging situations, Spain has developed excellence and expertise in Toxicology amongst its
scientific centers. There are now several universities which deliver training courses in toxicology, focused either on food or environment. In addition, non-clinical and clinical toxicology are studied as specific modules in schools of Pharmacy or Medicine. In order to increase skills and support scientific innovation, post education courses are organized by toxicology departments from universities, e.g. master in toxicology (www.mastertox.es) and quality and food safety (www.mastercsa.es). Other relevant modules can be considered as part of other existing masters (www.umh.es/contenido/Estudios/:tit_m_113/datos_es.html). In addition, several research centers (private and publicly owned) are focused on toxicology using state of the art technologies.

Today, toxicology is promoted by the Spanish association of Toxicologists (Asociacion Española de TOXicologia). Movement to create a scientific society started in the early 70s and became a reality in 1980. The two first presidents were Guillermo Tena and Manuel Repetto. There are around 400 members at the moment..
Today, amongst the association, all of the aspects of toxicology (Alternatives to animal use, Forensic, Environmental, Occupational, Non-Clinical, Clinical, and soon Industrial) are covered by correspon-ding sections. An event is organized every two years and the last one, in Salamanca, hosted several relevant communications with scientists and speakers from Spain, Europe and America. In addition, annual meetings of each sections is organized and a scientific review (revista de Toxicologia) is released several times a year. AETOX contributes to EUROTOX as full member and has developed fruitful partnership and contacts in Spanish speaking areas (and Brazil), inviting relevant spea-
kers to attend its congresses. AETOX members are involved in several initiatives like RITSQ (Network on toxicology and safety of chemicals http://ritsq.org) or groups in social networks. The Spanish contribution to toxicology started with Mateu Josep Bonaventura Orfila i Rotger (traité des poisons and father of the forensic toxicology) and today AETOX and Spanish toxicologists share their expertise and knowledge within Europe and other continents.

PhD excursion of the Division of Toxicology of Wageningen UniversityD o o r R e i k o K i w a t o m o , M y r t h e v a n d e n D u n g e n , H e q u n L i , a n d J o n a t h a n N i c o l a s
In June 2013, PhD students of the Division of Toxicology from Wageningen University organized for the second time an international study excursion. The places visited included companies, a university and an institute in the UK, all working in the field of toxicology. The excursion started on Sunday afternoon June 23rd, at Schiphol airport. From there, eleven PhD students and Dr. ir. Ans Punt (associate professor from the Division of Toxicology) flew to London. During the one-week excursion, the participants visited Syngenta at Jealott’s Hill, Unilever Colworth in Bedford, the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Simcyp in Sheffield and finally the School of Bioscienses at the University of Birmingham. At each visiting site, we received a warm welcome and a symposium and/or site tour. It was a valuable opportunity for PhD students to promote the research they perform at Wageningen University, to meet highly qualified experts in the field of toxicology and to learn more about the work that is performed at the visiting sites. This excursion brought PhD students a broad range of viewpoints. Hearing how findings from fundamental research can be applied in a more applied framework gave us another view on our own PhD
projects. Also, this excursion broadened our network and we hope that further collaboration with the visited sites will take place in the future. Last but not least, this excursion would not have been possible without the financial support from the SOIT foundation, LEB funding,
P&L drukkerijen, Experimental Toxicology Services Nederland and the research schools VLAG and SENSE. Because this experi-ence was a real success, the next excursion is planned for 2015, although the location still needs to be determined.
