FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT

OF THE

REGISTRAR-GENERAL.

GENERAL REGISTER OFFICE,

MURRAY STREET, BELFAST,

22nd October, 1926.

To the Right Honourable Hugh MacDowell Pollock, Minister of Finance for Northern Ireland.

SIR,

I have the honour to submit the Fourth Annual Report on the Marriages, Births and Deaths registered in Northern Ireland during the year 1925, together with Abstracts of the numbers of such registrations. The Report draws attention to the salient features of the Abstracts; figures relating to other parts of the British Isles and to previous years are included for purposes of comparison, and information is given relating to migration, the weather and vaccination.

The Abstracts of Marriages, Births and Deaths have been prepared for presentation to Parliament pursuant to the provisions of Statutes governing the systems of registration.

In connection with the Report for 1924 two important changes were introduced in the methods of compiling and presenting the statistics relating to births and deaths. First, all these events were allocated to the district of normal residence. Thus, births were assigned to the districts containing the usual residences of the parents, and deaths to the districts containing the usual residences of the deceased persons. Formerly these events had been assigned to the districts in which they occurred. Second, Sanitary Districts—i.e,. County Boroughs, Urban Districts and Rural Districts—were sub-

6 Report—1Q25.

st i tuted for Poor Law Unions as the divisions of the country for which figures were given. The first of these changes enables a more accurate view of the vital statistics of the divisions of the country to be presented, while the second change was called for by reason of the demand for statistics relating to Sanitary Districts, rather than for those of Poor Law Unions. The methods introduced in the Repor t for 1924 have been followed in the jDresent Report .

As regards the first-mentioned change referred to above, the Registrars of the various districts have, by carrying out the instructions as to entering the necessary information in their Registers, facilitated the process of allocation of births and deaths, and thus contributed largely to the value of the statistics contained in this Report .

With regard to marriages, the divisions of the country for which statistics are given are the Counties, as in the Report for 1924.

Reference has been made in previous Reports to the limitations to which comparisons of bir th and death rates are subject in the absence of adjustments for s_ex and age distribution of the population, for which adjustments the results of a recent census would be required. A census of Northern Ireland has been taken in 1926, bu t the necessary adjustments cannot be made until the final Census Reports become available.

For the purposes of previous Reports on the births, deaths and marriages registered in Northern Ireland, estimates have been made of the population as at the middle of each year. These estimates were based upon the population figure as ascertained at the last preceding census and the numbers of births and deaths registered in the meantime, adjustments being made for migration and movements of military. The results of the Census taken on 18th April, 1926, as published in the Preliminary Census Report , show tha t the estimate of population thus arrived at for 1926 was a figure about two per cent, in excess of the Census preliminary figure (1,256,322). When it is remembered tha t fifteen years had elapsed since the date of the previous Census, containing a period in which abnormal changes, due to the Great War, had taken place, it will be recognised tha t some difference was to be expected. On examination it appears t ha t the difference is almost entirely due to deficiencies in the figures representing the loss by excess of outward over inward migration.

In connection Avith this Report revised estimates of the population as at the middle of each of the years 1911 to 1925 have bee* made, using the information contained in the Preliminary Censuf Report of 1926. In framing these estimates it has been assumed tha t the figures representing the net loss due to emigration have been uniformly deficient over the period of fifteen years 1911 to 1926, Vvith the exception of the four years 1915 to 1918, when very little emigration took place. The revised estimates of population for the years 1911 to 1925 appear in Abstract X L , and have been used in calculating the rates contained in the various Tables in this Report relating to the country as a whole.

In Tables relating to local areas the population figures as published in the Prehminary Report on the 1926 Census have been used.

Report—1925.

GENERAL SUMMARY.

The latest enumerated population of Northern Ireland, obtained from the Census of 1926, is 1,256,322. This figure is taken from the Preliminary Census Report, and is, therefore, provisional. The estimated population in the middle of 1925 is 1,257,000, including military.

The results of the year's registration show that the marriage, birth and death rates are all below the average for the previous ten years.

Marriages registered during the j'^ear numbered 7,682. The equivalent marriage rate was 6.11 per 1,000 of the estimated population, being 0.14 above the rate for 1924. The marriage rate has shown considerable variation over the past ten years. The highest point (7.99 per 1,000) was reached immediately following the war, in 1919, after which the rate decreased steadily, falling in 1924 to 5.97. With the rate at 6.11 for 1925 a slight upward tendency is shown, although this rate is below the average for the previous ten years.

The number of births registered during the year was 27,686, the birth rate being 22.0 per 1,000. This rate is 0.7 below the rate for 1924 and 0.9 below the average rate for the ten years 1915-24. Since the year 1920, in which the exceptionally high rate of 25,9 was recorded, the trend of the birth rate has been in a downward direction. The rate of 22.0 for 1925 is the lowest recorded in the past ten years, Mdth the exception of the war years of 1917 and 1918, when the rates were slightly lower, and 1919, when the rate was the same.

Deaths registered during the year numbered 19,784, affording a death rate of 15.7 per 1,000. This rate is 0.4 below the rate for 1924 and 1.4 below the average rate for the previous ten years. This relatively low death rate was mainly due to an appreciably lower

8 Report—1925.

number of deaths from tuberculosis and respiratory diseases as compared with the average for the previous ten years, which was only partially offset by the higher numbers of deaths from cancer and whooping cough.

The death rate in Northern Ireland, which in 1915-17 was high, rose to the extremely high point of 20.6 in 1918. This was largely due to the severe epidemic of influenza experienced in that year. Between 1918 and 1923, however, a rapid decline took place, and in 1923 the rate was as low as 14.9. In 1924 an increase in the rate from influenza and respiratory diseases mainly accounted for the upward turn which the death rate took in that year. While the rate for 1925 is 0.4 per 1,000 lower than that for the preceding year, it is 0.8 per 1,000 higher than the rate for the year 1923.

The number of deaths from tuberculous disease registered during the year was 2,100, the equivalent rate being 1.67 per 1,000 as compared with 1.63 in 1924. The rate from this disease declined steadily from the high figure of 2.54 in 1918 to 1.62 in 1923. A slight upward tendency is now indicated.

Deaths from cancer, including malignant disease, numbered 1,441. This is the highest number recorded during the past ten years, being 34 more than the number recorded for 1924 and 172 more than the average number for the ten years 1915-24. The death rate from this disease has shown an increase each year since 1922.

Deaths from bronchitis and pneumonia numbered 2,660. This number is 249 less than that recorded for 1924 and 567 less than the average annual number of deaths from those diseases during the ten years 1915-24.

Migration.—According to returns published by the Board of Trade, London, the total number of emigrants from Northern Ireland to countries outside of Europe during the year 1925 was 8,725, and the immigrants into Northern Ireland from those countries numbered 1,585. The net migration from Northern Ireland during the year thus amounted to 7,140 persons, an increase of 805 compared with 1924.

Tlie Weatlier.—Reports on the weather experienced in Northern Ireland during each quarter of the year 1925, as furnished by the Director of the Meteorological Office, London, are published in the Quarterly Returns of Marriages, Births and Deaths for that year. Table 2 of this report shows the Average Air Temperature, Rainfall and Sunshine for Northern Ireland in 1925, and has been compiled from the tables published in the Quarterly Returns.

There were few outstanding features of the weather of 1925. The air temperature, sunshine and amount of rainfall recorded for the whole year were all slightly in excess of normal, although the number of days (225) on which rain fell is a little under the normal. Much rain fell in February, April and May, particularly in the first and last mentioned months, when the rainfall was nearly twice the normal. Only two fairly extended periods of sunny weather were experienced, namely—the whole of June, which was warm and particularly dry; and nearly all of November, when the weather was cold, dry and often foggy. Short bright periods were, however, enjoyed at intervals throughout the year. Gales were prevalent in January and February, and squally weather, with showers of sleet and snow, in December.

Vaccination.—As returned by the Registrars, the Successful Primary Vaccinations during the year numbered 23,994, the number of births registered during the year being 27,686. The number of Successful Primary Vaccinations is thus about 87 per cent, of the total number of births registered.

MARRIAGES. Marriages registered during the year numbered 7,682, the rate

being 6.11 per 1,000 of the estimated population. This rate is 0.14 above that for the year 1924, and 0.41 below the average rate for the ten years 1915-24.

10 RepoH—1925.

Of the husbands 98.0 per cent, signed the marriage registers by writing their names and the remainder signed by "mark," while 98.3 per cent, of the wives wrote their names and the remainder signed by "mark."

BIRTHS. Births registered during the year numbered 27,686 (14,185 boys

and 13,501 girls), the birth rate being 22.0 per 1,000, which is 0.9 below the average rate for the ten years 1915-24.

Of the 27,686 births registered during the year, 26,539 or 95.9 per cent, were legitimate and 1,147 or 4.1 per cent, were illegitimate, the latter being 0.2 below the percentage for the preceding year.

The 26,539 legitimate births are in the proportion of 105.1 males to every 100 females. The corresponding proportion for the 1,147 illegitimate births is 103.7 males to every 100 females.

Of the births appertaining to Co. Antrim, 5.0 per cent, were illegitimate ; for Armagh the percentage was 4.2 ; for Belfast County Borough, 3.1 ; for Down, 4.3 ; for Fermanagh, 5.3 ; for Londonderry, 5.2 ; and for Tyrone, 4.8. The corresponding percentages for the preceding year are :—Antrim, 5.7 ; Armagh, 3.9 ; Belfast County Borough, 3.4 ; Down, 4.1 ; Fermanagh, 5.4 ; Londonderry, 4.6 ; and Tyrone, 5.3.

The total number of births registered in the first quarter of the year was 6,863 ; in the second, 7,424 ; in the third, 7,148 ; and in the fourth, 6,251.

MULTIPLE BIRTHS.

Of the 27,686 children registered during the year, 27,075 were single children, 602 were twins and 9 were triplets. Thus, of the total children born, 97.79 per cent, were single children, 2.18 per cent, were twins and 0.03 were triplets. The twin births were 1.11 per cent, of the single births and 1.10 per cent, of the total mothers. In this computation of single births, twins and triplets, only live-born children were counted, still-born children not being registered in Northern Ireland.

Report—1925. n For example, a birth of one Uve child and one still-born child would appear in the report as a single birth, and a birth of two hve children and one still-born child would appear as a twin birth.

DEATHS. Deaths registered during the year numbered 19,784, the death rate

being 15.7 per 1,000. Of these deaths, 9,572 were of males and 10,212 were of females, the equivalent annual death rate per 1,000 of the respective male and female estimated populations being in each case 15.7.

NOTE.—The numbers in brackets are those of the Causes of Death in the International List.

The total death rate of 15.7 is 0.4 below the rate for 1924 and 1.4 below the average rate for the ten years 1915-24.

The total number of deaths registered in the first quarter of the year was 6,274 ; in the second, 4,910 ; in the third, 3,870; and in the fourth, 4,730. The equivalent annual death rates are 20.0, 15.6, 12.3 and 15.1 for the four quarters, respectively.

12 Report—1925.

Of the 19,784 deaths registered, 3,509, or 17.7 per cent., took place in Institutions. Of these, 1,088, or 5.5 per cent., took place in Infirmaries and General and Special Hospitals ; 311, or 1.6 per cent., in Public Lunatic Asylums; 1,814, or 9.1 per cent., in Workhouses and Workhouse Hospitals; 296, or 1.5 per cent., in District Hospitals. The remaining 16,275, or 82.3 per cent., were of persons who died "a t their own homes, etc."

CAUSES OF DEATH. It will be seen from Table 5 that of all the single defined diseases

heart disease contributes most to the destruction of human life. The toll exacted by this disease is, however, mainly from persons of fairly

advanced ages. Other diseases from which the proportion of deaths is high are tuberculosis, diseases of the respiratory system, cancer, influenza and cerebral haemorrhage. Deaths from cancer and cerebral haemorrhage, like those from heart disease, mainly occur among persons past the prime of life.

At the early adult period of life the highest proportion of deaths is caused by tuberculosis. In the case of respiratory diseases the

proportion of deaths is high, both in the early years of life and at advanced ages.

Apart from developmental and wasting diseases, pneumonia, bronchitis and diarrhoea show the largest proportions of deaths at ages under one year. Thereafter the proportion of deaths from diarrhoea decreases considerably, while in the age group 1-5 years the proportion for pneumonia, measles, whooping-cough, tuberculosis, scarlet fever and diphtheria are very much higher.

Enteric Fever.—Deaths from enteric fever numbered 50, 27 being of males and 23 of females. This number is 25 more than that for 1924 and 2 less than the average for the ten years 1915-24,

14 Report—1925.

Typhus.—One dea th from this cause was reported, as against 3 for the previous year and an average of 6 for the previous ten years.

Small-pox.—No deaths from small-pox were registered during the year.

MoasleS.—Deaths from measles numbered 227, 116 being of males and 111 of females. This number is 14 above t ha t for 1924 and 46 above the average number for the ten years 1915-24. Of the 227 deaths from this cause, 210 were of children under 5 years of age.

Scarlet Fever.—Deaths from scarlet fever numbered 118, 62 being of males and 56 of females. This number is 28 more than t h a t for 1924 and 17 more than the average for the ten years 1915-24. 71 per cent, of the deaths from this cause occurred a t ages between 1 and 10 years.

WhOOping-COUgh.—Deaths from whooping-cough numbered 838, 156 being of males and 182 of females. This number is 62 more than t h a t for 1924 and 52 more than the average for the ten years 1915-24. Of the 838 deaths from this cause, 324 were of children under 5 years of age.

Diphtheria.—Deaths from diphtheria, including those certified as due to membranous laryngitis, numbered 101, 36 being of males and 65 of females. This number is 13 more than t h a t for 1924 and 1 more than the average for the ten years 1915-24. Of the 101 deaths from this cause, 85 were of children under 10 years of age.

Diarrhoeal Diseases.—Of the 463 deaths from diarrhoea and enteritis, 333 were of children under 2 years of age, 205 of these children being males and 128 females. The number of children who died from these diseases is 59 more than t h a t for 1924 and 10 more t h a n the average for the ten years 1915-24.

Encephalitlfi Lethargica.—Deaths from this disease numbered 26,14 being of males and 12 of females. This number is 54 less than t h a t for 1924 and 10 more than the average for the ten years 1915-24.

Other Epidemic Diseases.—Deaths from epidemic diseases, apar t from those already named and exclusive of influenza, included, among others, 16 from erysipelas, 6 from acute poliomyelitis, 4 from meningococcal meningitis, 4 from mumps and 2 from malaria.

Influenza.—Deaths from influenza numbered 701, 309 being of males and 392 of females. This number comprised 286 registered as from influenza with pulmonary complications, and 415 registered with influenza as the sole cause or with other complications. The 701 deaths for the year are 325 less t han the number recorded for 1924, and 822 less t h a n the average for the ten years 1915-24. In making comparisons with years prior to 1921, the change in classification, noted under the heading "Bronchi t i s , " should be borne in mind.

Tuberculosis.—Deaths from all forms of tuberculous disease numbered 2,100, 961 being of males and 1,139 of females. These numbers are equivalent to the rates of 1.67 per 1,000 of the estimated population, 1.58 of the male population and 1.76 of the female population, respectively. The 2,100 deaths from this disease represent 10.6 per cent, of the deaths from all causes.

From 1918 to 1923 the t rend of the tuberculosis mortal i ty ra te was markedly in a downward direction. The lowest ra te in the past ten years (1.62 per 1,000) was recorded in 1923, since when, however, a slight increase has been experienced, the ra te rising in 1924 to 1.63

Report—1925. 15

and in 1925 to 1.67, The rate for 1925 is, nevertheless, still much below the average ra te for the ten years 1915-24.

Of the 2,100 deaths from tuberculosis, l,57i, or 75.0 per cent., were due to tuberculosis of the respiratory system.

In England and Wales the death ra te for tuberculosis in 1925 was 1.04 per 1,000, in Scotland 1.10 per 1,000 and in the Irish Free S ta te 1.57 per 1,000.

Including Carcinoma, Sarcoma and Cancer, Malignant Disease.

The death rate in this group for males and females together is 0.03 above the rate for 1924, and is 0.13 above the average rate for the ten years 1915-24.

RepoH—1925. 17

The most frequent sites of fatal cancer among males during the year were stomach, 190 ; liver and gall bladder, 63 ; intestines, 62 ; rectum, 58; jaw, 30; tongue, 26; and prostate, 24. The most frequent sites among females were stomach, 162 ; breast, 121 ; uterus, 104 ; liver and gall bladder, 74; intestines, 72; rectum, 39: and oesophagus, 22.

Particulars regarding age, sex and parts affected among the persons whose deaths were registered during the year as from carcinoma, sarcoma, cancer and malignant disease are given in Table 10.

Of the 1,441 deaths from cancer, 844 were ascribed to carcinoma, 67 to sarcoma and 530 to other or unspecified forms of malignant disease.

In England and Wales the death rate for cancer in 1925 was 1.34 per 1,000, in Scotland 1.36 per 1,000 and in the Irish Free State 0.94 per 1,000.

Tumours, not returned as Malignant.—This heading includes all non-malignant tumours, except those of the brain and of the female genital organs. 6 deaths have been ascribed to this cause, 1 being of a male and 5 of females.

Deaths from ovarian tumours numbered 16, and from uterine tumours, 19.

Other General Diseases.—Among these were 9 deaths from tetanus, 31 from purulent infection and septicaemia, 58 from rheumatic fever, 88 from chronic rheumatism, osteo-arthritis and gout, 23 from rickets, 104 from diabetes, 131 from pernicious ansemia, 27 from exophthalmic goitre (25 of which were of females) and 8 from alcoholism. The deaths from alcoholism were all of males [see also "cirrhosis of the liver"].

Diseases of the Nervous System.—Among these were 17 deaths from encephalitis (not returned as encephalitis lethargica), 134 from meningitis (not returned as tuberculous or Cerebro-spinal), 986 from cerebral haemorrhage and apoplexy, 115 from cerebral thrombosis and embolism, 174 from hemiplegia, 57 from other forms of paralysis, 22 from general paralysis of the insane, 56 from other forms of insanity, 68 from epilepsy and 179 from convulsions. Of the 179 deaths from convulsions, 114 were of males and 65 of females. The deaths of children under one year of age from convulsions numbered 131, this number being equivalent to 73.2 per cent, of the total deaths from this cause, and 5.5 per cent, of the total deaths of infants under one year of age.

Heart Diseases.—Deaths from the various forms of heart disease amounted to 2,533, 1,175 being of males and 1,358 of females. This number is equivalent to a rate of 2.02 per 1,000 of the population, or 12.8 per cent, of the total number of deaths from all causes. Of the 2,533 deaths, 6 were caused by pericarditis, 97 by acute endocarditis and myocarditis, 52 by angina pectoris and 2,378 by other diseases of the heart. The 2,533 deaths are 203 less than those for 1924 and 60 less than the average number for the ten years 1915-24.

Arterial Sclerosis.—Deaths from arterial sclerosis numbered 198, 138 being of males and 65 of females. This number is 15 more than that for 1924 and 85 above the average number for the ten years 1915-24.

Bronchitis.—Deaths from bronchitis numbered 1,394, 625 being of males and 769 of females. This number is equivalent to a rate of 1.11 per 1,000 of the population, or 7.0 per cent, of the total number of deaths from all causes. The number of deaths assigned to bronchitis in 1924 was 1,522, and the average number for the ten years 1915-24

18 Report—1925.

was 1,759. When making comparisons with the figures for the years preceding 1921, it should be borne in mind that deaths from capillary bronchitis, which were then assigned to bronchitis, are, according to the revised International Classification of Causes of Death, now included with deaths from broncho-pneumonia. Also, prior to 1921, deaths from diseases of the respiratory system, including bronchopneumonia, pneumonia and bronchitis, when associated with influenza, were classed as deaths from diseases of the respiratory system, while, according to the new classification, such deaths fall to be treated as deaths from influenza.

Pneumonia.—Deaths from all forms of pneumonia, including capillary bronchitis (see remarks under the heading "Bronchitis"), numbered 1,266, 674 being of males and 592 of females. This number is equivalent to a rate of 1.01 per 1,000 of the population, or 6,4 per cent, of the total number of deaths from all causes. Of the 1,266 deaths, 609 were classed to broncho-pneumonia, 134 to lobar pneumonia and 523 to pneumonia, not otherwise defined. The number of deaths assigned to pneumonia in 1924 was 1,387, and the average number for the ten years 1915-24 was 1,468.

From Table 12 it will be seen that the decrease in the number of deaths and in the death rate per 1,000 births from puerperal diseases and accidents of pregnancy and childbirth which was recorded for 1924 has continued for 1925, although in a less degree. Both number and rate are the lowest recorded for the past ten years. The deaths of women from non-puerperal diseases or causes combined with pregnancy and childbirth numbered 28, as against 25 for 1924 and the average number of 27 for the previous ten years.

Violence.—Deaths from violence registered during the year numbered 468, as against 476 in 1924. Of these 468 deaths, 10 were assigned to homicide, 75 to suicide and 383 to accidental causes.

The 10 deaths assigned to homicide include 8 of males, 2 of these being infants under one year old, and 2 of females, of whom 1 M'as an infant under one year. Of these 10 deaths, 7 were cases of murder.

Of the 75 deaths definitely attributed to suicide, 47 were of males and 28 of females. There were, in addition, cases in which coroners' juries returned "open verdicts." These cases were classed as accidents, but it is possible that a number of them were due to suicide. Among the 49 deaths from drowning, there were 4 cases of males and 2

20 Report—1925.

of females in which coroners' juries returned a verdict of "found drowned."

The deaths from external causes, other than those classed as homicide and suicide, include 15 caused by poisons or poisonous gases, 81 by burns and scalds (51 of these were of children under 5 years of age), 6 by accidental mechanical suffocation, 49 by drowning, 7 by firearms, 92 by fall, and 92 by vehicles, of which 61 were caused by motor-driven vehicles.

Of the 15 deaths (8 of males and 7 of females) caused by poisons or poisonous gases, 10 were due to coal gas, 2 to alcohol and 1 each to ammonia and lysol; while of the 6 deaths caused by mechanical suffocation, 4 were due to overlying.

Ill-Defined Causes of Death.—194 deaths have been allocated to this heading, 38 of these deaths being described as "sudden deaths" and 156 being of " unstated or ill-defined causes."

Enquiries were sent to medical practitioners and coroners requesting further information as to 434 indefinitely certified deaths, and 375 replies were received, 350 containing such useful additional particulars as enabled those cases to be classified under definite causes of death.

Uncertified Causes of Death.—Of the 19,784 deaths registered, 2,350 were not certified, there having been neither a medical attendant during the last illness nor an inquest held by a coroner. Of this number, 1,637 were deaths of persons aged 65 years and upwards and 261 were of infants under one year of age. The proportion of uncertified deaths is 11.9 per cent, of the total deaths, as compared with 12.0 per cent, for 1924 and an average of 11.7 per cent, for the ten years 1915-24.

Inquests.—The number of inquests held by coroners during the year was 465, or one inquest for every 43 deaths registered. Of the cases referred to the coroner by Registrars, there were 239 in which the coroner decided that inquests were unnecessary. These cases comprised 91 deaths certified by medical practitioners and 148 uncertified deaths.

Report—1925. 21

Ages at Death.—Deaths of children under 5 years of age numbered 3,735, or 18.9 per cent, of the total deaths registered, the deaths of male children numbering 2,077, or 21.7 per cent, of the total deaths of males, and the deaths of female children 1,658, or 16.2 per cent, of the total deaths of females.

Deaths of persons aged 65 years and upwards numbered 8,079, or 40.8 per cent, of the total deaths registered.

Deaths of persons aged 70 years and upwards numbered 6,485, or 32.8 per cent, of the total deaths.

Deaths of persons aged 95 years and upwards numbered 94, 41 being of males and 53 of females.

Among the deaths registered were 11 of persons whose ages at death were returned as 100 years or upwards. 3 of these deaths were of males and 8 of females. In the absence of complete public records for remote periods, verification of the ages of all very old persons is not possible and no verification has been attempted.

The ages in detail of the persons whose deaths were registered during the year are given by sexes and counties in Abstract VI.

Infant Mortality.—Deaths of infants under one year of age numbered 2,391, or 86 per 1,000 births registered, as compared with 85 per 1,000 in 1924, and an average of 90 per 1,000 for the ten years 1915-24.

The deaths of infants under one year of age include 1,386 of males and 1,005 of females, the former number being equivalent to 98 per 1,000 births of males and the latter to 74 per 1,000 births of females. The corresponding rates for 1924 were 94 and 74, respectively.

In 1925 and 1924 the rates for deaths of infants under one year of age were 75 and 75 per 1,000 births, respectively, for England and Wales, 91 and 98 for Scotland and 68 and 69 for the Irish Free State.

The infant mortality rate for the aggregate of the Urban Districts of Northern Ireland in 1925 was 101 per 1,000 births registered, and the rate for the aggregate of the Rural Districts was 68 per 1,000, the corresponding rates for 1921 being 102 and 63 respectively.

Table 14 gives the infant mortality rates for Northern Ireland as a whole for each of the eleven years 1915-25, by causes of death, and, in the case of the last of these years, by sexes and age-periods. I t will be noticed that the "all causes" infant mortality rate for Northern Ireland has, on the whole, shown a decline over the past ten years, which is largely due to the fall in the rates from atrophy, debility and marasmus, and from bronchitis.

Table 15 affords comparison between infant mortality rates for the aggregates of the urban and of the rural areas in Northern Ireland. The differences usually found between urban and rural rates and between male and female rates are marked. With very few exceptions the urban rates are appreciably in excess of the corresponding rural rates. Also, in nearly all cases, the male rates are higher than the corresponding female rates.

Deaths of illegitimate children under one year of age numbered 235 in 1925, which is equivalent to a rate of 204.9 per 1,000 of the illegitimate births registered, as compared with 187.8 in 1924. The corresponding rate for legitimate children in 1925 is 81.2 per 1,000. Table 16 shows the deaths of illegitimate children by the principal causes, together with the equivalent mortality rates. Most of these rates are considerably in excess of the corresponding rates for all

children; particularly, the rates for diarrhoea and enteritis, atrophy, debility and marasmus, lack of care, and violence and syphilis are very high. It may, however, be noted that the rates for some of the causes are based on very small numbers of deaths.

The deaths of illegitimate children under one year of age in the Irish Free State represent a rate of 286 per 1,000 illegitimate births registered.
