INTRODUCTION

Pursuant to the Members of Parliament (Register of Interests) Act 1978 (No. 9223), Members are required to register their interests with the Clerk of the Parliaments by providing information under specific classifications. The classifications may be represented conveniently by the following abbreviated headings*:

• Income source • Trusteeship • Office held • Land beneficial interest • Company beneficial interest • Travel contribution • Party, body or association • Gift exceeding $500 • Trust beneficial interest • Other substantial interest

Although each Member is required to submit an Ordinary Return on or within 60 days of 30 June in each year, section 6(4) of the Act also allows for notification of variations to the Register to be submitted at any time.

Since the Cumulative Summary of Returns - 30 September 1996 was prepared, several Members have reported variations to the particulars registered in their names and a summary of variations notified between 1 October and 4 December 1996 was tabled in December 1996. The material which follows summarises under the abbreviated headings given above those notifications which have been received between 5 December 1996 and 21 May 1997.

This summary also includes particulars registered by Ms S.M. Davies, M.P., who was sworn in as a Member of the Legislative Assembly on 18 March 1997 following a By-election for the electoral district of Gippsland West. Those interests are being reported for the first time, no reference being made in the relevant entry to headings under which Ms. Davies had nothing to register.
