Peer reviewed GaBi ts LCA model was developed
In line with Worldsteel methodology
Aligned to ISO 14040/14044
Enables the analysis of six flat steel products
Model is parameterized allows calculating the
environmental impact of each product individually
Allocation was avoided by using “system
expansion” for by products (slags, tar, benzene,
etc.) credits/burdens influence the results
directly

EAF route
04.09.2017 New LCA Data for Steel Products ⦁ Lisa Mohr 9
EAF model consists of a two stage aggregation level
GaBi ts model is based on ISO 14040/14044
Consistency with worldsteel methodology
Primary data provided by German secondary steel
producers
In contrast to the BF model, the primary data on
process emissions is less detailed according to
the availability of process related non-CO2
emissions data.

Considered impact assessment categories:
- Global warming potential [kg CO2 -Equ.] - Acidification potential [kg SO2 -Equ.]
- Eutrophication Potential [kg (PO4)3- -Equ.] - Photochemical Ozone creation Potential [kg Ethene-Equ.]
And additionally: Primary energy demand [MJ]

Multiple Recycling Approach (MRA)
04.09.2017 New LCA Data for Steel Products ⦁ Lisa Mohr 12
Products from primary or secondary steel can
be considered of equal qualities
Examination of blast furnace route plus
recycling via electric arc furnace route
necessary
Although steel is theoretically recyclable
infinitely, realistically the number of recirculation
is limited because
• Use phases from steel products vary and
partly last for more than 100 years
• Every cycle has losses in both recycling
(10 %) and due to incomplete collection
(5 %) after lifetime

Conclusion
04.09.2017 New LCA Data for Steel Products ⦁ Lisa Mohr 14
Providing regional specific LCA data for steel
products of German speaking steel industry
Approach according to Worldsteel methodology
Externally verified GaBi ts data sets with average
values from VDEh available for steel customers
High steel recycling rates and its inherent properties
require holistic LCA approach (e.g. MRA)
End-of-life approach is indispensable when
comparing different materials for lightweight design
Steel is the sustainable material for the future
