(NC)—Federal funding for rebates on home energy audits that were not booked before March 31, 2010, was cut over eight months ago. However, there are still provincial rebates available for Canadians who have not yet had a home energy audit performed.

For instance, in order to qualify for an Ontario rebate, a home owner can follow three simple steps: Book a home energy audit with a certifi ed energy auditor, such as Direct Energy; implement the energy recommendations or improvements and book your post-retrofi t audit; and fi nally, submit the documentation required to receive the rebate. Ontarians are currently eligible for up to $5,000 in provincial rebates.

Albertans can consult Climate Change Central for information on rebates for home energy audits, and can rely on a certifi ed energy auditor from Direct Energy to perform the audit. Home owners interested in upgrading their home to a more energy effi cient standard can research the rebates available within their specifi c province.

The benefi ts of making the recommended improvements based on a home energy audit are:

• Energy savings: Use less energy year round.

• Dollar savings: Less energy used = lower energy bills.

• Greater home value: Energy renovations can increase the resale value of a home and the offi cial EnerGuide label proves the work’s been done.

• Simpler home maintenance: Sealing up leaks means less mold, and airborne dust and allergens stay outdoors where they belong.

A Direct Energy home energy assessment provides a tailored list of suggested energy effi ciency upgrades for each home audited. A home energy audit is the fi rst step towards increasing energy effi ciency and reducing energy bills.

(NC)—Did you know that driving with tires underinfl ated by eight pounds per square inch can reduce the life of your tires by 15,000 kilometres and increase your fuel consumption by four per cent?

For improved fuel efficiency and enhanced safety this winter, Natural Resources Canada offers these tips to give your tires the attention they need:

• Measure your tire pressure once a month using a high quality pressure gauge (a visual inspection is not suffi cient), especially after a sharp drop in temperature which decreases tire pressure;

• Have your tires aligned and balanced according to the schedule in your vehicle manual;

• Monitor wear and tear on your treads and replace tires when the treads are worn out;

• Check for stones, glass and other foreign objects that could work their way into the tire and cause a leak;

Under-infl ated tires are estimated to cost Canadian vehicle owners almost 643 million litres of fuel a year. At $1.00 a litre or more for regular unleaded gasoline, that amounts to more than $600 million a year in wasted fuel.

With proper tire maintenance, the average Canadian driver could save up to the equivalent of two weeks’ worth of free gas every year. As well, because tires will last longer, you could save the cost of one or two sets of tires over the life of a vehicle.

Heating and ventilation: the key to your comfort

Comfort inside your home is largelydependent on air quality. When discussing a house’s indoor air quality, heating andventilation enter into the equation. These two elements are systems that can sometimes appear complex to the uninitiated. Indeed, some maintenance jobs should always be done by professionals. Whatever your level of competence, here are few useful things to know.

First off, the heat generating system: The furnace. Air fi lters should be cleaned and replaced when necessary. If your home is heated with oil, check the tank for any rust or cracks. If you have a fi replace, ensure the doors are relatively airtight to prevent cold air from entering the house.

Your air exchanger also requires minimum upkeep. Clean out the dust that may have accumulated inside it. Then check the motor, the heating elements and the fan to ensure they are in good working order. To do this, simply switch the fan on manually. Make sure the ventilation traps are not obstructed.

Obviously, once winter arrives, it is altogether normal that every type of heating system operates frequently — risk of fi re and intoxication are much higher. Now would be a good time to install a carbon monoxide detector if your home doesn’t already have one. This odourless gas can be fatal if inhaled.
