THE ACTING PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Here we are mid year driving our cars on tours, to car shows, cruises, and picnics. The weather has been iffy at times but we have had fun. Check the upcoming region chapter activities for further fun with your hobby. I am going to discuss two characteristics of our Region. The 69th Annual Illinois Region Car Show at Cantigny Park is coming up on July 23rd. This is a great opportunity in a beautiful setting to converse with Region members as you show off your vehicle. You renew relationships with mem-bers or begin a new one with anther member. If you are a recent member this is a golden opportu-nity to meet fellow members. There is no looking or selling car parts or no touring the countryside with points of interest. Bring the family and friends as the park provides museum, gardens, and air conditioned snack bar and restaurant. Presently members sign up at a lower price than previous years. There is a need for members to assist in making this show successful. Members are needed for publishing, ob-taining sponsors, judging cars, attending club tab-lets and related areas. Contact me or your chap-ter President for details.

Second point: The Illinois Region Board of Directors election will be in the late fall. Now is the time to consider being a candidate. New can-didates with different ideas are needed. Many of the present Directors have been serving for many years and would like to step down. This is your opportunity to help direct the region with your wants and needs. For more de-tails about the director positions and what it in-volves, contact your Chapter President and/or Region Board members as listed in Sidelights and the Region Roster. Hope to see you on the 2018 Board.

Bob

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK. . .

Hi All, Well, we have successfully finished an-other tour for the club - the Illinois Region’s Spring Tour to the Rockford area. It was good to see members that I had not seen for some time. It got me to wondering why more people don’t participate in the car tours.

It seems to me that tours are exactly why one would join a car club - to get out in our an-tique babies and drive up and down scenic roads and enjoy feeling of pride and freedom these mo-ments evoke.

So how come we have 30 members attend-ing instead of 130? Why is it that some members never have joined a Region multiple day tour? Good question.

Who has the answer? YOU DO.

So I am asking those of you who have never attended a tour or those of you who rarely attend, what is keeping you home?

This year the Region decided to try reduc-ing the Spring tour to an overnight jaunt. We had several thoughts on this. We thought that an overnight tour would make it easier for those members who still work to attend. We thought it would reduce the cost of the tour since it would only be one night in a hotel. Still, only about 35 people came.

So now I am just plain asking flat out. Tell me what keeps you away from the Spring and Fall tours?

You can email me at [email protected] or send me a snail mail to 4600 Stonewall Ave., Downers Grove, IL 60515.

Thank you for all your help. I really enjoy hearing from you.

Pat

SPRING TOUR ROCKS AROUND ROCKFORD BY Dan Helgren/pictures by Ed Armatys, Bob Markert & Dan Sobczyk The Illinois Region Spring Toyr on June 3 and 4 was to the Rockford area. This was another great tour planned by the team of Dan Sobczyk and Cheris Schurrer which in-cluded a stop at John Sanders res-toration shop. The car I found most inter-esting was a 1930s Fiat Topolin, which is Italian for little mouse and was re-ceiving a total restoration. Everything on that car was tiny, looking more like a model than a real car. An original Mini would dwarf this car.

Warren Lauridsen enjoyed the tour accaomanied by his daughter Cheryl.

Despite the 95° temperatures, the Japanese Gardens were peaceful and lovely. L to R: Jim Wiltse, Mar Robinson, Harold & Carroll Flood, Dick & Joan Murray and Bev Armatys.

These gar-dens are considered among the best Japa-nese gar-dens in en-tire coun-try.

Even though the Angel Mu-seum is normally not open on Sunday, they did open for us. The docent told wonderful tales about how the collection came to be.

Some of the 20,000 angels in the collection. Pat Markert was hoping the gift shop would have an angel holding a kitty to add to her collection of 3. Among all these angels, not one was holding a cat.

The second stop on the way home was another car collection. This gentleman is a member of the Studebaker’s Drivers Club and some of the mem-bers brought their cars to show us.

More of the cars at this second stop. It was a lovely tour.

Trip to Grand National By Jerry Bodden Several Illinois Region members: Ed & Bev Armatys, Dan & Darlene Sobczyk, Bob & Sue Wenderski, Jerry & Joan Bodden attended the AACA Annual Grand National Meet, held June 14-17th at the Silverstein Arena in Independence, MO, a suburb of Kansas City. The meet was hosted by the Kansas City Region, who did a great job of organizing the various tours and other ac-tivities: a Friday evening BBQ, the awards ban-quet, trailer parking, and the car show location. This event also hosted the inaugural of the AACA Zenith Award, 20 magnificently restored vehicles se-lected in 2016 by a team of AACA and other distin-guished judges. The “Restoration of the Year” was a 1928 Auburn 8 Speedster. All twenty Zenith vehicles were on display in the Silverstein Arena.

IL Region members were honored to re-ceive the following AGNM awards: Ed Armatys, 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air conv. First Grand Na-tional; Sue Wenderski, 1957 Jaguar XK 140, Sen-ior Grand National; Jerry Bodden, 1941 Buick Su-per conv. Repeat Sen-ior Grand National. Bev Ar-matys & Darlene Sobczyk worked in Judges Ad-ministration on Satur-day; Dan Sobczyk & Jerry Bodden were class judges at the meet. Jerry reached Fifty judging credits at the AACA National meet in Auburn, IN this past May.

GRAND NATIONAL - Two stories

Trip to Grand National By Ed and Beverly Armatys Having achieved the First place ‘Junior’ and ‘Senior’ awards levels of the AACA with our white 1957 Chevy Bel Air convertible, we decided to make an attempt to obtain an award at an AACA Grand National event. The nearest a Grand National show would be, was in the Kansas City area, held June 15, 16, and 17, 2017. Because of the distance, and peculiar stormy weather lately, we chose to trailer our 57 Chevy. We arrived at the Hilton Garden Inn in Independence MO. on Friday and pulled the car out early on Saturday morning for the event, there were around 200 vehicles to be judged. As in most AACA events, there were numerous judging groups, each comprised of a chief judge and four other judges. The judges were each as-signed a 100 point work sheet for each car. The work sheets included the categories; Exterior, Interior, Engine area, and Chassis, all totaling 400 points. There were six Chevys in our class #33. It was a beautifully warm day for this well attended show. A beautiful black 57 Chevy con-vertible shown next to us was owed and restored by the technical adviser of the Classic Chevy Club and Magazine, Dave Fletcher. He has shown this car at several events in various stages of restora-tion. We met him in 2007, at Warren, Michigan for the 50th anniversary event at the GM Engi-neering Design Center. There were 375 1957 Chevys at this celebration. There has not been a celebration sponsored by GM since this date. The Grand National Awards Banquet, at the end of the day, was held at the Hilton, and was a very well attended and an excit-ing event. Both Dave and we re-ceived a First Place Grand National Award for Continued page 6

JUST FOR LAUGHS FOR SALE, 36-24-36 CANTERBURY, England (UPI) Ken Shaw is advertising his wife for sale. His wife Marie found her-self in the “for sale” columns of a local newspaper because she complained his be-loved sports car was cramped and drafty. “Car or wife must go,” the advertisement read. “Car - 1963 MGB, red, all extras. $1,200. Wife - 1944, blonde, 5 ft., 36-24-36, $60,000 or nearest offer.” Said Shaw; “For the sake of peace in the home, one of them has got to go.” THE ATLANTA JOURNAL—JUNE 4, 1969

36-24-36 WIFE GETS OFFERS —CAR DOESN’T CANTERBURY, England (UPI) Ken Shaw, who re-cently advertised in a newspaper “car or wife must go” and put a price tag on each, said he had three offers for his wife but no inquiries about the car. Shaw said he thought no one would take him seriously when he placed his ad, which said: “Car or wife must go. Car - 1963 MGB, red, all extras. $1,200. Wife - 1944, blonde, 5 ft., 36-24-36, $60,000 or nearest offer.” Shaw now says: “So far no one has inquired about my car but I’ve had three offers for my wife. One man wrote asking what condition she was in and did I think she was worth $60,000. Another man even tried to lower the price. He said she was too old to be worth that amount of money.” THE ATLANTA JOURNAL - June 12, 1969

His work experience was varied ending with his retirement from Ford Motor Assembly Plant in Chicago in 1990, after 37 years of service. Bill was known as “Mr. Fit-it” and could fix almost anything. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Muriel Baker whom he married on October 5, 1952; his 4 children, his 7 grandchildren, his 9 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild. Bill and Muriel are long time members of the Momence Chapter.

Our condolences to his family. His gen-tle manner and sense of humor will be missed.

GRAND NATIONAL Ccontinued each of our cars! (Since both of our restorations, our car has over 10,000 miles on it, Dave’s has 36 miles.) In addition, we also received a large plaque as an AACA Preservation Award. It was wonderful to be honored this way for our restoration project that took about 19 years. This meet also held the new ‘First Annual AACA Zenith Award’ presentation with twenty selected cars chosen from over 3300 from all of the last years meets. A 1928 Auburn 8-88 Boat Tail Speedster received the choice Zenith Award. The cars shown on the field were amazingly beau-tiful, everyone should try to attend an AACA Na-tional Meet.

REGION MAKES 22nd TRIP TO UNION EXTRAVAGANZA By Chris Schurrer

August 6th, the first Sunday in August, marks the day for the Vintage Transportation Extravaganza at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, ILL. This one of a kind show brings not only all makes together is one location, but dif-ferent types of vehicles. Cars, Buses, Emergency & Military Vehicles, and trucks of all kinds. That is just one aspect of this show, as the railway mu-seum's equipment is out in full force. Ride the streetcars around to different areas of the sprawling car show, as well as larger trains on the main line. Participants get UNLIM-ITED rides at the show just for the price of en-try. Not only that, but one can stroll through the numerous train display buildings on site. Food is also available on site. This is a great venue for adults and kids alike! Bring the whole family for the same price to enter (1 driver and up to 3 passengers). This is the 27th year this show has taken place, and we have been attending the show for 22 consecutive years. Our parking area is in a tree lined area of the show field, which is a great place for shade on those sunny days. For those same 22 years, we have been touring to the show. We will be rerunning the tour from 20 years ago. The tour starts in Island Lake, meeting at the Mc Donald's at 8:00 A.M. and departing at 8:30 A.M. Sharp. We will have a pickup point available in Crystal Lake for people who are traveling in from the south at 9:00 A.M.. We should be at the show around 9:30 A.M. The tour itself is free. Hope to see everyone there! See pages 15-16

Last month I published pictures from the Silver Springs Car Show. One of the pictures of a red and white truck, I commented that I didn’t know what it was, but that I loved the color. That gen-erated the following email. The red and white Studebaker truck has quite a his-tory. Dave and I found it in Sharon WI in pieces and Dave bought it from Tim Kehoe. Dave is very handy and restored it to like new, bolts, nuts and the works. At Union I ran across a guy named Tim Kehoe and I told him that we had a Tim Kehoe in our club that passed away. Found out that this was his son and told him Dave had bought the truck. He told me that this truck was his grand-fathers and he used drive it and went into its his-tory. I invited Tim to our Drive Your Studebaker Day and had Dave drive the red and white truck so that Tim, the son, could see it and a deal was made for Tim to own it. It got 399 points out of 400 at South Bend this year. Tim is at most Blackhawk Chapter events. Jack Willis Editor’s Note: Thanks for the information Jack. Enjoyed hearing from you.

Don Henry asked me to mention that all IL Region and Waukegan /NS members are invited to his August 13, 2017 antique auto show on the grounds of his new residence Windsor Park, , 120 Windsor Park Drive, Carol Stream IL 60188 . It is a nice grassy area with a Gazebo and Pond. If there are no conflicts would you be kind enough to include this in the Klaxon and Side-lights. If you want more details feel free to call Don at 224-392-1644 Thank You James Rubenstein,

Momence: Ernie Hart reported their dust off tour was cancelled and no tours are currently planned due to illnesses. Silver Springs: Chris Schurrer reported on their tour to White Pines and other sites. They had weather problems due to the rainy days prior. The Sandwich Show had 260 cars and the swap area was bigger than ever. Waukegan/North Shore: Chris Schurrer re-ported May 21st dust off tour went well – they started with a presentation of a Stanley Steamer, then to a fish boil – in attendance were 30-35 cars. In July they have an airport tour on the 15th, a visit to Arlington Race Track on the 29th, In August – the 6th Union – he reported to use the application that will be a part of the Klaxon, 20th Car show at the Grand Dominion’s Lakeside Lodge in Mundelein. Old Business: Item (Term Limits for Executive Board) tabled. New Business: 1) A new membership form com-bining renewals and new members on one form has been designed by Carla Baxter. 2) One Chap-ter/Region event per date – It was suggested that Chapters follow rules and try not to host an event on the same day another Chapter is having an event. 3) Swap Meet Guidelines – need a com-mittee to revise guidelines since swap meet dates has been moved to April. Momence will be running the 2018 swap meet. Committee: Bob Market, Chris Schurrer and Dan Sobczyk. 34 The need for new individuals on Board – Current Board Members are serving double duties. It was sug-gested that the Chapter Presidents not run for a Director position. 5) A motion was made to have the board vote for the change of Membership chair – Andy Voss replacing Carla Baxter. All were in favor of change.

Next meeting to be held in September hosted by

Waukegan/North Shore, who will determine the

date. Chris Schurrer moved to adjourn. Rick

Shaw seconded.

Adjourned at 12:34 pm for lunch.
