Dear Members,
The insightful responses of Dato' Ajit Singh (Disciplinary
Committee Chairman) and Mr Richard Chung
(Dancesport Chairman) to the articles in the recent
edition of Nautilus are indeed pleasant surprises for us
in the Editorial Board. Rather than the deafening silence,
such responses reassure that Nautilus could be the
platform for members to convey their thoughts, ideas
and feelings etc. towards the happenings or what
should happen or should not have happened in PSC.
Please keep the exchanges going at “hon.secretary@
penangswimclub.com”.
While much have been said about what the club lacks,
we should also give time to review the redeeming
features of PSC today. Call it… count our blessings. For
one, the ambience of the club with its scenic shoreline
and beach front facing the open sea is second to none
in the country or even the region. The wide range of
aquatic sports and activities which can be enjoyed at
PSC be it swimming, angling, sailing etc. doesn't leave
much to one's imagination. Rather, we are indulging
in many such activities nonchalantly while thousands
or more can only dream about it. The easy going ways
of PSC are often appreciated only after one has been
subjected to the sticky rules and conventions prevailing
in other clubs or institutions. Some 'daily members' do
come to PSC in their regular (or the same) shorts, t-shirt
and flip-flops day in day out for years on end. Can you
beat it?
I think that's PSC for us today. Do appreciate and cherish
it. As it is often said, we got what we deserve… make
sure we continue to deserve what we got.

My Fellow Members,
By the time you receive this issue, you might be reading the Nautilus fromthe deck of our new and improved swimming pool, thanks to the effortsof our hardworking Maintenance Sub-committee headed by Jon Ooi,together with his ever supportive team including Kenny Koay and themanagement team. The issue of the pool has attracted much controversy, notably some misleading rumours which we have sought to clarify, butmostly, we are confident that with the re-opening of the pool, we canreturn to just enjoying one of the best facilities that the PSC has to offer.
With regards to another property of ours - Lot 417 - we are pleased toannounce the final resolution from our trial in the Court of Appeals; detailsof which can be found in page 6. On a more serious note, an EGM willbe called by the Club, on request by a member who was recently expelledfor assaulting an employee of PSC, to appeal for a reinstatement, whichis provided for under the Club rules.
This one case should not be an indication of how the majority of ourmembers treat our valued staff at PSC. Indeed only recently, our F&BExecutive Keith Abdullah found to his immense relief that our membersalso dig in deep to help his family who was in dire need of medical help. His new born baby Anya was found with two holes in her heart at thetime of birth and urgently needed surgery to survive. Within days of anappeal going out, the staff, Club members and his friends collectivelyraised RM30,000, thus saving a beautiful girl’s life. We can certainly saywith pride and gratitude that the PSC family bond and values has prevailedonce again!
As we say “welcome” to a small but fragile life, we must say good bye toa person who has been a BIG, integral part of PSC for the past 14 months.Rahman will be sorely missed for his enthusiasm and Ever-Ready smile -strong and long-lasting like the battery! Under his expert and watchfuleye, the F&B department flourished tremendously with marked creativityand rising standards at every function. Hidden talents amongst the staffwere unearthed and nurtured, and the level of moral and commitmentgrew in leaps and bounds. As Rahman leaves Penang for greener pasturesin KL, we have no doubt that it will not be the last time we’ll be seeinghim - at least we hope not! In the meantime, Ms Sally Kang, our FinancialManager shall be filling in Rahman’s shoes as Acting GM, so please giveher your warmest support in her endeavours.
And finally, I know some members will be feeling the pressure over thenext few months as the Sections and Groups will be busy closing accountsand submitting new budgets in preparation for the Club’s AGM. But wewill not end the fiscal year without first honouring our beloved Patronthe Governor of Penang at the TYT Patron’s Night on 10 March. I lookforward to seeing many of you then!

Dear Members,
As many of you already know, 21 February 2012 would
be my last day as General Manager at the Penang
Swimming Club. I will be leaving Penang Island - my
home town where I have worked for the last 26 years,
and even as I feel emotional about leaving the Penang
Swimming Club, I am happy to say that I will be
enhancing my career at an international hotel chain
based in Kuala Lumpur. I am grateful, and at the same
time, proud that I will be taking along the invaluable
experience and knowledge which I have gained during
my time with the Club.
I sincerely wish to thank Dato’ Mahinder Singh Dulku,
PSC’s Trustee, Mr KH Chan, Club President and all the
2010/2011 Committee Members, as well as the present
Committee Members for their endless support and
guidance during my tenure here.
I wish to also acknowledge the staff of PSC for their
hard work and dedication in delivering excellent service
to our members. To the Management Team - you guys
are the heart and soul, the sweat and blood for all the
improvements and developments accomplished for the
last one year. I would like all of you to know that I am
very proud to have had the opportunity to work with
such a dedicated and enthusiastic team. What a great
experience it has been!
And finally, I leave you with the full confidence that the
Club will be in the best of hands with a fine leadership,
a talented team, and with the support of the members,
PSC will continue to grow to become Penang's premier
club.
Thank you very much and my very best wishes to you
all.

PSC’s Lot 417Court of Appeal’s Verdict
It is our pleasure to announce the verdict from the Court of Appeal with regards to the Club property, Lot
417 located across the road from the clubhouse.
Excel Crescent (the proprietor of adjacent Lot 418) was awarded the Right of Way through Lot 417’s land,
by the Land Administrator. The Right of Way being registered officially in the land titles of Lot 417, meant
that the Club stood to lose the 21,732sq feet of land to the neighbouring owner. The Club subsequently
made an appeal to the High Court in protest against the decision made by the Land Administrator. However,
PSC’s appeal was dismissed by the High Court.
Undaunted, PSC took the case to the Court of Appeal. During the period from the end of 2008 to the
beginning of 2012, the hearing had been adjourned on 7 occasions due to discussions held between the
Club and Excel Crescent Sdn. Bhd. with a view of reaching a settlement out of court. These discussions
however, ended in a deadlock.
The case finally went to trial on 5 January 2012 at the Court of Appeal and PSC won the court case on all
counts. The Court of Appeal ordered the setting aside of the Land Administrator’s Order and also removed
the endorsement on the private Right of Way on the land title of Lot 417. We are also pleased that the PSC
was also awarded legal costs amounting to RM30,000.00 to be paid by Excel Crescent Sdn. Bhd.
Excel Crescent Sdn. Bhd. has now appealed to the federal courts, but the hearing date has yet to be fixed.

MAINTENANCE REPORT
09
Major renovation of the swimming pool commenced on 5 November 2011. The Main Committee unanimously agreed to
commission the works as stated above after the toes of a Club member’s son was badly cut while swimming in the pool.
The initial deadline to complete the project was 15 January 2012. However, the contractor discovered that the pool wall
tiles were misaligned when hacking of the wall tiles began. As such, the contractor had to reset and realign the pool tile
finishes in order to minimise the misalignment.Another problem was discovered while the contractor was hacking the bed of the swimming pool. More than five layers
of mortar were found and in some areas the workers detected hollow spots.A decision was made to remove all the layers of cement screens and finishes up to the concrete surface in order to have
the best surface preparation for laying the new tiles. After hacking off all the cement screens and finishes the workers discovered that the pool bed had a crack and was leaking.
In view of the seriousness of the situation, three C&S Consultant Engineers were engaged by the Club to inspect the pool.
After examining photos dating back to 1947, pertaining to repairs carried out on the pool, it was concluded that the pool
was constructed sitting on the ground.A final decision was made to seal the leakage using SIKA grout waterproofing material, and to strengthen it by
inserting a layer of ready mixed cement screen mortar mixed with fibre. Finally waterproofing membranes
were laid before conducting water ponding tests. All these diligent measures were taken to ensure that the swimming pool
would be maintained in the best possible manner for theenjoyment and pride of all PSC members.

The Chinese can probably lay claim to perhaps one of the most
elaborate New Year’s Celebrations in the world, with many
customs and ceremonies to ensure that the upcoming year will
be healthy, wealthy and prosperous for us all.
With the Chinese making up over 1/5 of the world’s population,
the Chinese New Year is certainly one of the most celebrated
ethnic New Year in the world. While many kick off the new year
only with a big do on the day, the Chinese New Year officially
lasts 15 days, with the end of the New Year celebrated with as
much gusto as the beginning as the final family gathering.
Known as ‘Chap Goh Meh’ in Hokkien, meaning the ‘15th Night’,
Penang has the distinction of having originated a unique custom
now celebrated by the millions - the Mandarin Orange throwing
- a.k.a the Chinese Valentine’s Day.

It was lucky none of the 8 couples who opted for the
ultra-cosy tables were afraid of heights, because at this
year’s Valentine Day celebrations they were treated to
a breath of fresh air from their tables set up in the
balcony of the Captain’s Restaurant. For those who
took romance (quite literally!) to new heights, the view
was spectacular, and although the cool breeze worried
some diners, the skies were kind to the lovers, blessing
them with a perfect atmosphere to share moments
with their loved ones. The 100+ diners were pleasantly
surprised by the elaborately prepared dinner of salmon
or chicken dishes, with salad and house wine, capping
off with a beautiful strawberry panna cotta dessert -
all for an incredible value of RM88 per couple! No
wonder we’re all in love with the PSC!

Lee Chye Seng has been making quite a splash asthe Chairman of the Swimming Section despite beingin the position for less than a year. As we sat downand started chatting with this rather soft-spokengentleman, we were pleasantly surprised by thepassion he had for this challenging role and hisdetermination to make a positive difference.
Chye Seng who joined the Club some ten years agorealises the immensity of the role he is carrying, ashe is the first to admit that the Swimming Section isone of the most important sections of the Club. TheSwimming Section is not only renowned for itsactivities among other clubs, but its excellentperformance in competitions also brings honour andprestige to the Club.
According to Chye Seng, one of the important factorsthat contribute to the success of the SwimmingSection is their team of high-calibre coaches whoare dedicated, committed and very experienced. They are the driving force to inspire the Club’sswimmers to continuously raise the bar of excellenceand outperform the competition.
Chye Seng, who used to be a casual swimmer inthe past has today learned the fine nuances andtechniques of swimming. This is partly due to thefact that his 10-year-old son is an avid swimmer whois actively involved in the Swimming Section. His 13-year-old daughter on the other hand prefers art-related interests and is growing to be quite a pianist.Chye Seng and his wife take pride in encouragingtheir children to participate in wholesome extra-curricular activities as they feel such activities will
nurture their character and instill good values suchas teamwork, competitive spirit, discipline, responsibility etc.
While acknowledging that helming the SwimmingSection is quite a challenge as there are many areasthat requires his attention and time, Chye Sengbelieves that at the end of the day it is fulfilling tosee the efforts that he and his committee membersput in bear fruit and yield results. In fact, one of thereasons he assumed the role of Chairman was afterhe had received assurances from the committeemembers who have followed through with theirsupport and encouragement.
On top of that Chye Seng is also very impressed withthe excellent management of the Club and the wayit continues to grow as a family-oriented club withcomprehensive facilities and activities that meet thevarious needs and interests of the members.
When asked what he envisions for the Club in thefuture, Chye Seng hopes that more aquatic facilitieswill be included such as Platform Diving, Water Polo,Synchronised Swimming etc. He also hopes that adedicated pool could be built for swimmers to trainin.
On a personal level, Chye Seng enjoys hanging outat the Club as it enables him to pursue all his favouriteactivities - playing tennis, swimming, meeting withhis committee members for impromptu meetings orjust relaxing at the Library with a good book. ChyeSeng and his wife who observe a meatless diet arealso actively involved in Tzu Chi-related activities.

MEMBER'S VIEWPOINT

The world we live in is full of awe-inspiring naturalwonders, created through monumental changes inthe earth over millions of years. The New 7 Wondersof Nature initiative was formed in 2007 to create alist of “Seven Natural Wonders of the World” selectedthrough a global poll. In the first count of the globalpoll announced on 11 November 2011 by BernardWeber, founder-President of the initiative, the TableMountain of South Africa was provisionally voted asone of the new “Seven Natural Wonders of theWorld”. The results of the global poll were still underrigid validation (including at the time of writing thisarticle), so my wife and I decided to visit TableMountain to see it for ourselves. We left for SouthAfrica on 22 January 2012, arriving in the early hoursthe following day at Cape Town, the home of TableMountain.
Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain overlookingthe city of Cape Town, and one of the most prominentlandmarks of South Africa. The mammoth structuresits at the northern end of a scenic sandstonemountain range that forms the spine of the CapePeninsula stretching to Cape Point and the Cape ofGood Hope. Table Mountain has come to symbolisethe heart of the city of Cape Town and its people, towering over the metropolitan nucleus of the cityand forming the centre-point by which everyone(locals and visitors alike) navigates the city’s roads, highways and avenues.
The flat top of Table Mountain is often covered byorographic clouds, forming what locals call a “tablecloth” of cloud, adding to its mysterious beauty. Onthe first day of our arrival, cloud and strong windconditions prevented us from visiting the mountain.
However, on the third day of our visit, Table Mountainloomed clear and bright in the Cape Town sunshine, and we were able to make our journey to the topof the mountain. The cable car that we took to thetop of the plateau was a relatively new “gondola”that carries up to 65 people each time and with arevolving floor inside to allow visitors a 360-degreeview on the way up the mountain. The views fromhigh up on the mountain plateau were simplybreathtaking, with splendid views of Table Bay, theAtlantic seaboard and Cape Town city, includingCape Town stadium, the site of the 2010 FIFA WorldCup hosted by South Africa.
Table Mountain has not only been described as a“geologist’s dream”, but also a “botanist’s dream”with its unusually rich biodiversity and indigenousvegetation. The mountain is part of the “Cape FloralRegion Protected Areas” designated a World HeritageSite in 2004, and many of its vegetation types areendangered. Table Mountain is part of the uniqueCape Floral Kingdom, one the world’s six floralkingdoms. An estimated 2,200 species of plants arefound on Table Mountain alone (more than existedin the whole of the United Kingdom), many of whichare endemic to the mountain and cannot be foundanywhere else.
My wife and I went on one of the many walkingtrails on the top of Table Mountain, and took manypictures of the unique landscape and the diverseflora and small wildlife on the mountain. We spenta good many hours enjoying the magnificence ofthe mountain, and when we had to leave, we badefarewell to what was in our view, indeed one of theNatural Wonders of the World.

Thisyear, we added an incentive of a RM10 Club coupon for the first 20participants who landed a fish, followed by the next 20 participantsreceiving RM5 Club coupons each for their first catch. This may soundpretty easy, but at the end of the day, quite a number of participantsended up empty-handed. The Sand Sculpture Competition had everyoneon hands and knees but the victorious team won the prize for theircreative design.

PRE CNY GET-TOGETHERThis year’s celebration was held on 14 January 2012 together with the membersof the Tai Chi Group. It provided a perfect platform for the members to get tomake new friends and renew acquaintances in the run up to the Chinese NewYear. Mandarin oranges and packets of groundnuts got the festive moodgoing, while members belted out Chinese karaoke favourites, much to everyone’sdelight. Of course, the party would have been a tad subdued if not for thefree-flowing beer sponsored by the Angling Section and the wine, which wassponsored by the Main Committee. Many thanks to the President, Vice President,Honorary Treasurer and the Club Captain who came with their spouses to joinin the festivities. Gong Hei Fatt Choy!

On Sunday, 8 January 2012, the last leg of the monthly competitions was held at the Snake Templeseafront, with 42 participating members witnessing the rather nailbiting ‘fish-off’ between Danny Leeand Ung Seang Guan for the men’s championship. Both being tied on points coming into this finalcompetition, it was Danny’s catch that beat Ung’s by a mere 40grams, making it one of the narrowestof margins for a championship win. Congratulations Danny!
Not to be outdone, it was a lady who hauled in the highlight of the event - a Stingray weighing840gm, which won Cecilia 1st prize in the ladies category. Well done everyone!

NIGHTBBQ
On 23 December 2011, Swimming Section organised a BBQ
Night as the last social event for the year 2011. It was in fact a
half-day event which started with a yoga session for all the
swimmers and the section members at 2.00pm. This programme
was sponsored by the Yoga Group and conducted by one of
their yoga teachers. We would like to express our gratitude to
the Yoga Group for their kindness and generosity.
After the yoga session, all the swimmers and members headed
to the beach to take part in the second program of the day -
Fun Beach. They truly enjoyed themselves by rowing kayaks,
paddling the boat and having a banana boat ride, while some
young swimmers just played sand castles or just lazying around
on the beach. All of them just had a lot of fun.
After two energy-sapping programmes, our BBQ Night started
at 7.00pm at the sailing area. We were honoured to have the
presence of the Club Hon. Treasurer, Mr Ooi Theng Chee and
also Mr Walvin, the Club Captain. At the dinner, we invited the
Club Captain, Mr Walvin to present the performance awards
under our Reward Scheme to the swimmers who secured gold
and point in the President Cup Competition in Kuala Lumpur.
Finally, we also gave away goodies packs to all the swimmers
to celebrate Christmas and also New Year 2012.

On 4 February 2012, the Chinese New Year Dinner cum
Birthday Party Celebration was organised exclusively for the Karaoke
members, with some members of the Main Committee and their
spouses attending as our guests of honour. The atmosphere was
jovial and many members took to the stage long before the buffet
dinner was served. While everyone had a great time with
sentimental songs, the mood changed and members cheered
when Stanley Chew started to rock the night with a few popular
Elvis Presley songs. Of course we didn’t forget to sing PSC’s best
rendition of “Happy Birthday” to all our celebrants for the night.
If you’re looking to enjoy an evening of great singing and wonderful
atmosphere, come join us at our Annual Karaoke Dinner on
31 March 2012 at the Multi-Purpose Hall. Bookings can be made
through Mr Oh Teik Chuan or register at the Pacific Lounge. See

By Mr Tan Tian Heng
When the Penang Swimming Club Tennis Group accepted the invitation to play the TB Cougars from
Singapore, we did not realise the strengths of our opponents. When these players from the land of the
Merlion arrived at the Club, we were busy sizing up these players. Most looked athletic and fit. After a quick
breakfast, we ushered the players for a warm-up session on the court and the match soon began, on a bright
sunny Sunday morning.
I quickly realised I was paired with Heng, our tennis captain, to kick off the tournament with the first mixed
doubles. We played Marcus, their tennis captain and Faridah, and boy, was it a nerve-wrecking experience!
All other players were lining along the side of the court to watch how the first critical match unfold. We got
on to a slow start and were soon trailing love-2. Once we got warmed up as the match wore on, we were
soon able to read their shots better and Heng's smashes were effective against their defensive lobs. When
the tight match came to 5 all, it was time for the tie-breaker and we started the decider strong and was
leading throughout the game, eventually overcoming our competitive opponent with 7 - 2 in the tie-breaker.
It was a closely contested match which ended in our favour. The score was coincidentally similar to our other
mixed doubles pair played by Su Hee and Charles, who deployed good tactical play to bring the overall
score at this stage to 2 - 0 in favour of the home team.
As the Singaporean team was short of female players, we generously 'loaned' them two of our promising
players - Li Siok and Lisa. These strong female players helped our opponents secure two points in their favour
defeating Slyvine/Bertil & Joyce/Ramesh. The men’s double soon started with Bertil/Paul and Choon Choon/Peter.
The former pair won whereas the latter pair lost, bringing the overall score to 3 all.
Our next pair was Heng and Alvin, our top seeds, playing opposite the top pair of TB Cougars. After many
deuces, winners and smashes in this neck to neck match, our pair edged over their opponents to gain
victory. It was an exciting match that kept all of the spectators entertained as we cheered for our respective
team. It was obvious the players too enjoyed this great match as some high level of tennis was displayed
by both sides.
Charles and Sunny fended off their hard-hitting opponents to finally emerge victorious, putting PSC ahead
with the overall score of 5-3. The next two matches were played by Bertil and Jeff who secured their win
convincingly whereas Wei Kah and Ramesh fought hard to gain a point but eventually succumbed to
their worthy opponents who showed great skills and winning strategy.
The last match was played in the noon day sun by Alvin and Sanjeev who eventually lost the match to
the visiting team who was determined to close the gap in the scores, bringing the overall score to 6-5
with PSC having a slight edge over the TB Cougars on the score board.
The friendly matches might have been over at this point; the party had just begun with a sumptuous
buffet staged on the marina deck for all the players. The tension from the match was over and we were
happy to rest our rackets for a good chat with the visiting team. The visitors took in the beautiful sea
view surrounding the club and marvelled at such breath-taking sight that we get to enjoy.
Last but not least, captains from both sides, Heng and Marcus, exchanged souvenirs and our captain of
the day, Wei Kah was thanked for the arrangement of the matches. All in all, it was a fantastic day filled
with a lot of fun both on and off the court and the captain of TB Cougars from Singapore thanked our
team for the wonderful hospitality and promised to host a reciprocal event in Singapore.
The Tennis Group Membership is now open for registration at the Club reception.

ZUMBAVALENTINE’S
WORKSHOPPILATES
What a party! What an amazing time we all had! The Aerobics Group held its Valentine’s Zumba
on Sunday, 12 February at the MPH. Open to all members of the Club free of charge, more
than 50 people turned up with their best dance gear and boogied their socks off. The atmosphere
was electric and everyone was in the mood for a great party. Up on stage, Lisa, our Zumba
instructor led the way and showed us how it is done. We danced the Salsa, Mambo, Samba
and Hip-Hop (Don’t Stop) to the rhythms of the Caribbean and songs of JLo’s “On The Floor”
and Adam Levine’s “Moves Like Jagger”. It was an awesome 2 hour session of heart pumping
and thumping, non stop dancing. Screams of laugher and joy could be heard down the
corridor which had some of the other PSC members and staff scrambling to the hall to find
out what the merriment was all about. The PSC members certainly know how to have a
good time and we, the Aerobics Group certainly know how to throw a party! We
are planning an Easter Zumba party in April, look out for it on the notice boards.
Don’t miss out on this one!
Pilates is the hottest trend in fitness today. Ever since we, the Aerobics Group introduced it to the
Club, it has proven to be a hit with our members - probably because everyone knows that Pilates is
famous for developing strength, flexibility, coordination and flat abs. With that in mind, we enlisted
another instructor who is an expert, to help us get a grip on the concept of Pilates. Ms Kitty Ng
who teaches at Fitness First Studio has 20 years experience in teaching Pilates. She holds an NSCA-
CPT certificate and also an internationally recognised certificate from the American Council on
Exercise (ACE).
She is very professional, methodical and systematic in her instruction. For the 1st workshop which
was conducted at Level 14, she taught us proper Pilates breathing techniques and the basic
movement principles upon which Pilates exercises build. This may sound very technical to the
layman but basically what it really means is that Pilates helps give you a better posture and
graceful, efficient movement in everyday life and this will inevitably translate directly into an
improved sense of well being. The 2nd in the series of Pilates workshops was held recently
on Monday, 13 February to give the members a deeper understanding, in depth knowledge and
technical skills of Pilates. More emphasis was given on efficient flowing movement between exercises,
range of motion and energy level. In the months ahead we will be conducting more of this kind of
workshops, so do keep a lookout for dates and times of the classes which will be posted at various
strategic points. Kitty has also come on board as one of our regular instructors. Come and
knowledge and experience every Thursday 6.30pm - 7.30pm at Level B1.

TAI CHI NEWS
With the Lunar year of the Rabbit coming to a close, the Tai Chi Group and
Angling Section jointly held a pre-CNY get-together on 14 January 2012
at the MPH to welcome the year of the Dragon. In Chinese mythology, the
Dragon is a much revered divine animal from the gods, symbolising wisdom,
wealth and power.
In setting the spirit of the Dragon year, the MC, Dr Lim Chee Khiong, led
everyone in a sing-along with a series of CNY songs in English. This was
accompanied with the distributing of mandarins or “kam” (symbolically
gold) to everyone present as golden blessings for a prosperous, healthy
and an auspicious year ahead. The festive and joyous atmosphere was
further heightened by the predominantly red attire because red also
symbolises good luck, happiness and prosperity.
Helping to liven up the get-together was the rented karaoke set
which was fully utilised by those who wished to sing.
Joining us in this joint get-together were the Club President
Mr Chan Kean Hin, Vice-President Dr Hardev Singh, Treasurer
Mr Ooi Theng Chee and wife and Club Captain Mr Walvin
Labrooy and wife.

Penang Swimming Club played host to Royal Ipoh Club (RIC) in a Darts ChallengeTrophy Match. The Trophy Match was initiated by RIC with both Clubs contributingto the cost of the trophy, with the two Clubs hosting alternate matches.
RIC’s reputation preceded them, so the PSC darters realised that a strong team wasrequired. The PSC team for the evening was:• Siong • Choo Lip Hoe • KC Kong • Patrick Foo • Sin Chee Hong
The match was played under the Darts Tournament Rules and Format. In anoutstanding performance by our darts team, PSC scored with a convincing 11 -1 victory.
Although this result may surprise some, especially at RIC, it comes as no great shockto certain members of our Darts Group, who have long maintained that when wefield a team containing some of our best darters together for a “one off“ contest,we can compete with any club.
Congratulations therefore to darters on the evening for a great result, and manythanks to those who attended for their support and assistance on the organisationof the evening. The result moved PSC Darts Group to 4 Wins 0 Losses against otherclubs in the 2011-12 season.
We are due to visit RIC for a return match in the near future, but will await aproposed date from RIC!!!

BoomerangThe Meltdown Tour
By Michael Lewis
Boomerang is a tragi-comicromp across Europe, in whichLewis gives full vent to hisstorytelling genius. The cheapcredit that rolled across the planetbetween 2002 and 2008 wasmore than a simple financial
phenomenon: it was temptation, offering entire societiesthe chance to reveal aspects of their characters theycould not normally afford to indulge. Icelanders wantedto stop fishing and become investment bankers. TheGreeks wanted to turn their country into a pinata stuffedwith cash and allow as many citizens as possible to takea whack. The Irish wanted to stop being Irish. TheGermans wanted to be even more German. MichaelLewis' investigation of bubbles across Europe is brilliantly, sadly hilarious. He also turns a merciless eye on America:on California, the epicentre of world consumption, where we see that a final reckoning awaits the mostavaricious of nations too. This is the ultimate book ofour times. It's time to brace ourselves for impact. And,with Michael Lewis, to laugh out loud while we're doingit.
The NextDecadeWhere we've been - andwhere we're going
By George Friedman
From Publ i shers WeeklyWhereas Friedman's last book,The Next 100 Years, focused on"the impersonal forces that shape
history in the long run," now the geopolitical intelligenceexpert examines the impact of current decision making, especially of the United States government, on theworld. Friedman suggests that problems currentlyaffecting us significantly may not actually matter in thelong run. He compares the position of the United Statestoday to that of Britain in 1910, and argues that theU.S. is an "unintended empire" and that its president isa "global emperor," in part due to the size of the country'seconomy...

The WeirdSistersBy Eleanor Brown
This is the "delightful" (People)New York Times bestseller that'searned raves from Sarah Blake,Helen Simonson, and reviewerseverywhere-the story of threesisters who love each other, butjust don't happen to like each
other very much... Three sisters have returned to theirchildhood home, reuniting the eccentric Andreas family. Here, books are a passion (there is no problem a librarycard can't solve) and TV is something other peoplewatch. Their father-a professor of Shakespeare whospeaks almost exclusively in verse-named them after theBard's heroines. It's a lot to live up to. The sisters havea hard time communicating with their parents and theirlovers, but especially with one another. What can theshy homebody eldest sister, the fast-living middle child, and the bohemian youngest sibling have in common?Only that none has found life to be what was expected;and now, faced with their parents' frailty and their ownpersonal disappointments, not even a book can solvewhat ails them...
