    01stDecember 2013

Refugee Hope is a charitable organisation that was set up following students experience of the current

Syrian refugee crises. While in Jordan students raised 4500 through social media to initiate the charities

primary relief project. Now with the support of Jordanian partners, Refugee Hope is initiating a series of

projects to support the day-to-day struggles refugees are facing in Jordan. We now need people to help

    support our initiative.

    Relief4Refugees

    In September 2013 Coventry

    University students launched a

    Facebook appeal in support of

the current refugee crisesunfolding in Jordan. At present

    there are close to 600,000

    Syrian refugees living in

    temporary accommodation on

    the Syrian/Jordan border. After

    visiting and experiencing the

lives of those living under such

    strenuous conditions the

    students raised a remarkable

4500 in under 48 hours to help

    provide basic provisions for the

    refugees.

    Since returning, the students

    have endeavored to continue

the work they started through a

    formal charitable organisation.

    A leading objective of the

charity is to raise money for

    basic, life sustaining relief items.

    With support from partners in

    Jordan and the Majid ALSadi

    Changing Lives Programme

relief aid projects will run under

the Refugee Hope banner allyear round.

We will continue to seek donors

    and raise money through

    fundraising events to ensure a

steady stream of relief items are

    delivered to the communities o

refugees that we have beenworking with. This is especially

crucial in the lead up to winter as

    the temperature is dropping

    By providing a

    platform to allow

    children to expres

    their grief, you are

    taking the first

Our first drawing4disasters workshop ran on the 30thof November

2013. Over 100 Syrian children took part in the Mafraq region

bordering Syria. The workshops aim to provide a platform for

young Syrians to express their grief through art and also offer the

teams who conduct the workshops an opportunity to develop

strong relationships with the mothers and children in the Syrian

    communities.

Creating art after trauma is one way to help children cope with

post-trauma stresses and serves to bring lightness into their lives

    (Karla Leopold)

The pictures below are just a few examples of the art produced

by the Syrians throughout the workshop. These pictures will now

form the basis of a social enterprise scheme to help raise the

much-needed funds for basic relief items we will be providingthrough the Relief4Refugees programme.

All products including; tee shirts, cards, posters, mugs, calendars

and photo books will be available on our website in the near

    future. www.refugeehope.org.uk

Drawing4disasters is the first step for many of the refugees into the

process of reconciliation after a period of complete turbulence.

    Refugees

When leaving Syria many of the

    refugees left their lives behind

them. They now have to adapt to

a set of very challengingcircumstances. To support this

    process our Skills4Life programme

aims at educating Syrians with life

    critical skills by utilising

    departments within the University.

Our primary objective will be to

    develop the camps infrastructure

    so it reflects the guidelines

    recommended in the Sphere

    minimum standards in

    humanitarian response. This will

    include:

    Developing safe and

    secure sanitation through

    the camp

    Lighting areas of the

    camp to ensure safety

    after dark

    Moving toilets to reduce

    the risk of contamination

    Provide triage sieves and

    deliver sick patients to

    UNHCR health care

    centres.

Other projects we are starting to

    develop, in coordination with

    University departments, include:

    Agricultural development

    The food security department is

    researching the possibility of

    growing and harvesting basic

    crops to support the growing

    food needs of the refugee

    populations. The processes will

    be based around using waste

    product to create sustainable

    compost that can then be

used to fertilize the arid desert

    land.

    Temporary School

    Development

    Education was highlighted as

one of the greatest priorities i

    by the needs assessment that

    was carried out in November

    2013. The University is looking

    at temporary structures that

    could be used as classrooms

    and easily constructed in the

    camps. We are also starting

    to research the

    implementation of

    educational training to

    empower Syrians to teach in

    their communities.

    Polio Vaccination Scheme

    We are currently in discussions

    with the UNHCR with regards

to a team coming out to

    administer polio vaccinations in

    light of the recent polio

    outbreak in Syria, Lebanon andJordan.

    Regular Doctors Visit

    Through our partnership with The

    Al-Amman Fund we hope to

    arrange for the refugees to

    receive monthly check-ups from

    There are huge numbers of

    children around the world

    today, living in horrendous

conditions in refugee campsdue to conflict, war and

    disaster. Many have lost their

    mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters

    & friends. They hardly eat,

    sleep, drink and NEVER have

fun, the ultimate right of a child.

    Fun4all aims to provide as

many children as it can with the

    fun they deserve. Imagine a

    sandy refugee camp, full of

    death and despair. A young

boy, who has lost his father, hisbrother and has only his mother

alive to care for him, has lost

    hope and feels nothing but

    sadness. Then a convoy of

    lorries arrives containing huge,

    brightly coloured bouncy

    castles. The childs face lights

up as he runs over to them. He

    spends the next two hours

    jumping and shouting on the

bouncy castle forgetting themisery he felt 2 hours before. He

runs back to his mother withopen arms, full of joy and tells

his story. Whilst he is away

    having fun, the mother has

    been able to organise their

sleeping arrangements andgathered food for their evening

meal. Upon seeing the joy inher sons eyes, she instantlybecomes filled with happiness.

    Thats what Fun4All aims to

    achieve, happiness through

    fun.

There are a number of ways

    Fun4all can provide fun for

    children in refugee camps.

    Bouncy castles are just one

    example and not always

    practical or the best option.

    Therefore Fun4all will continue

    researching, analysing and

    gaining input form the children

    themselves, to find the most

    beneficial and practical ways

to ensure children in these timesof crisis are able to have fun

    Projects

    Setting up child friendly

    play areas: Designatedfor children and

    containing equipment

    to promote play.

    Education through

    entertainment (Through

    fun, UNICEF has

    successfully taught

    children in refugee

    camps about HIV

    prevention, gender

    based violence etc)

    A time of huge

    stress can prevent

    the enjoyment of

    any aspect of life

    Play4All aims to

    redress this
