Performance NotesI, The Lord, written for the funeral of a close relative, is a reminder of the compassion found inJesus alone, alive in the midst of the community. There are critics who would question theappropriateness of singing Christ’s words in the first person. To these I would answer that it is thebaptized Christian’s right and responsibility to comfort, challenge, and nourish each other withChrist’s words. This is not about play-acting, but about witnessing.
The recording features piano, organ, bass, flute, and oboe, with trumpet added on the final refrain. In addition to these instrumental parts, this octavo also includes a trumpet part for verse 2,especially effective at the words “Turn your sorrow into joy, for life has just begun.” SoloInstruments I & II (flute and oboe on the recording) are optional. Indeed, the piece may beperformed simply with guitar and/or organ. Whether or not multiple instruments are used, be surenot to abandon the tension-creating F pedal points.
The soprano part of the refrain is actually a descant to be reserved for the final repeat. At othertimes, the sopranos double the alto (melody) line. If your resources do not include SATB choir, this descant line can still work well with the melody.
This piece may be used at funerals, weddings, and ordinations. It is also appropriate during HolyWeek and the Easter season and for the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ.
