Neighborly Cottage Meetings will be held during the month of November for all members of OSL. See page 4 for details and in mid-October, watch the mail for a postcard with details of dates & times. Meetings were well-received last year and groups have been shuffled so we can all get to know each other a little better!
Dear Friends,
The Bible is filled with sto-ries of people who cared so deeply about their fellow human beings that the sharing of their experiences of God’s activities could not be stopped. This is seen over and over again in the Old and New Testaments. One example is found in II Kings 5: 1-19, Naaman’s slave girl.
Naaman’s slave girl took a huge risk in speaking to her mas-ter. It was an unsolicited word of hope for a cure for his disease. She was bold. Her courage was not rooted in her own abilities, place in society, acknowledged wisdom, nor wealth. Her cour-age grew from her firm belief in God’s will for the well-being of all human life. We see that trust in God, or faith, can lead anyone in any circumstance of life to boldly reach out to others with a word of hope or help.
Like Naaman’s slave girl, we also believe in God’s will for the well-being of all human life. This has been demonstrated in
so many ways in our midst. Over the past months we have cele-brated: “God’s Work, Our Hands”. Thank you for reaching out to those in need.
Our congregations have touched many in our communi-ties through: VBS, gifts to the Ronald McDonald House, school supplies collection, items for sin-gle moms, the Fair service, and much more.
Let us continue to have courage to risk reaching out to our neighbors with a word of hope and help. There are many places where hope and help are needed in communities.
Do not let fear or doubt silence you and stop you from serving your neighbors in God’s name. We may not always know it, but God turns our best efforts into bountiful accomplishments beyond our expectations!
Your Friend and Pastor,
Pastor Janet Warnes
PASTORAL ACTS: Funeral of Robert Lindblad—September 10, 2015.
On the Lighter Side...
In the spirit of the Scandina-vian heritage of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Glen Head, New York, a choir member said “takk” to the Korean-American choir direc-tor after each rehearsal. After 10 years, he assumed the man knew what the word meant. Recently the director asked what it meant, and he was told “thanks”. “Oh, good”, he replied, “in Korean ‘tak’ means ‘chicken’.”

Yes, we are back to quilting in the Lower Level of Our Savior’s. We have had a wonder-ful turn-out and it was so nice to get together again. We were graced with the presence of Pas-tor Janet at coffee time as well, which we enjoyed. We also had some very nice surprises. We received a whole lot of yarn; many skeins of several colors. We sorted it and it is all ready for the great ladies who make the prayer shawls. Many thanks to Betty Evin who left two beautiful completed quilts for us. There was fabric from Fern Dahlman and two large bags of flannel sheets that someone left. Pat Williams came with 10 large spools of sewing thread, and she stayed and worked with us! A huge Thank You to these generous people who remember us and what we do. We would like you to write your name somewhere on your gift so we can thank you personally. Our Fall has been so wonderful; many of us want to be outside doing late garden, flower or yard work. But if you feel a need for something different, please come visit us. Coffee time is around 2:45 pm and we have wonderful treats to go with it! Mission Action

Worship & Evangelism
Reformation Sunday is October 25th
. Thoughts of being a Christian Lutheran
continue to echo in my head. Here are core Biblical Lutheran Themes:
Justification by grace through faith: “For there is not distinction, since
all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified
by his grace a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Je-
sus…” (Romans 3:22-24)
Law and gospel: Luther said, “The law says, ‘do this’ and it is never done.
Grace says, ‘believe in this’ and everything is already done.” (Law con-
victs; grace frees.)
Means of grace: Grace happens when the good news of Jesus is preached;
when someone is baptized; and when one receives the Lord’s Supper.
Theology of the cross: God died on the cross rather than leave us in our
brokenness.
Saint and sinner: A saint is a forgiven sinner. We are both saint and
sinner. Our righteousness depends on God’s grace.
Vocation: We are all part of the priesthood of all believers in that we
teach and pray for one another, and our work/profession is a calling
from God if one in faith and for the service of neighbor.
Faith in context: “A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to
none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all”.

Simply Giving Consider this greener approach to giving. No paper, convenient and easy!
Simply Giving is a program endorsed by the church where the offering is given automatically at the time you designate. You no longer need to write checks or prepare envelopes every week.
Advantages: Electronic giving is all about convenience for you.
Is electronic giving safe? It is certainly less risky than writing checks or carrying cash.
Do I receive a receipt? Yes, you will continue to receive a contribution statement semi-annually.
How does it work? The gift electronically transfers from the bank account you designate to the church’s bank account using the ACH network.
How do I sign up or increase my gift? To sign up or to make changes, please see Wanda in the church office for a form. Sign-up can be done online or with a paper authorization.
Leaving a legacy through life insurance
Within the hearts of many people is a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of others. But how can people en-sure that this desire takes root? How can people make sure that those organizations and causes most important to them are supported in a tax-wise manner through their financial gifts?
One great tool for leaving a financial legacy is life insurance. Assuming one no longer needs the life insurance, it can offer a practical, affordable and flexible means of passing money to charitable organizations and causes. Life insurance donors can leave a significant financial legacy while receiving either considerable tax benefits or the ability to retain a high level of control over the gift.
The simplest and most common way is by naming a charity as the beneficiary of a life insurance contract. Contract own-ers simply name the charity as their primary beneficiary. The charity then receives the death benefit. If the owner names the nonprofit organization as its secondary beneficiary, the charity receives the death benefit only if the primary benefici-ary predeceases the contract owner. If the charity is named as a partial beneficiary, the charity receives a specific dollar amount or a specific percentage of the death benefit.
Retaining ownership of the life insurance contract means maintaining full legal control over the contract. This allows the owner to change the beneficiary at any time for any reason. However, changing the beneficiary designation to that of a favorite institution, cause or charity does not necessarily provide additional tax advantages.
Another option is to name the charitable organization as owner and 100 percent beneficiary of the contract. Upon trans-fer of ownership, the donor continues to pay all premiums. The donor may receive a current income tax deduction equal to the lesser of his or her cost basis (generally, the premiums paid) or the fair market value of the contract (which with many life insurance contracts is roughly equal to the contract’s cash surrender value). Many donors would like to make a significant contribution to a charity but simply don’t have the funds. By assigning a life insurance contract to a charity and then paying the charity the premiums necessary to keep the contract in force, donors limit their current outlay and may receive a tax deduction on the premiums that they pay.
Under the right circumstances, both existing life insurance contracts and new ones can be used as charitable gifts. Through life insurance, a relatively modest annual payment may result in a sizable charitable gift allowing a legacy to be passed on.
Thrivent Financial is represented in the local area by Chad M. Erickson & Karen Grainger.

THANK YOU FOR THIS BOUNTY, GOD
Thank you for this bounty, God, that you give to me,
for grain that grows within the field and fruit upon the tree.
Thank you for the little seeds that in the Spring are sown,
and with your gifts of sun and rain have through the Summer grown.
Thank you for the farmers, Lord, and bless them for their toil,
as now they gather in the Fall this bounty from your soil.
