Why did Jesus insist that John baptize him in the Jordan River? Jesus had no sin to be washed away, no need to repent. But Jesus had a great need to cooperate with God's plan of salvation. And that plan required that he identify totally with the people he had come to save. 1.) Jesus had a bigger plan in mind, and he was asking John to cooperate by laying aside his own way of thinking "for now." Does God ever ask you to "give in" on smaller issues? 2.) What is your response? How do you decide whether to "give in" or not? When it is important to you to be "right" and when can you lay aside your own way of thinking in order to let God's bigger plan unfold? 3.) By our Baptism, we were given a share in Christ's life and ministry. He shares his identity with us. How will you live as another Christ, so that God will say of you,

Jewish people had many rules about purity, which had less to do with cleanliness than with ensuring worthiness to be in contact with sacred things. Social exclusion was the Jewish norm. The elite mixed only with the elite and the pure with the pure. Along comes John the Baptist, who doesn't seem to care much about the rules. He says that all must repent and be baptized--men and women alike--regardless of social status. How shocking! Jesus appears and insists on being baptized like everybody else, even though John knows he is the expected Savior. Jesus goes on to break more rules by healing on the Sabbath, forgiving sins, and sharing meals with tax collectors and prostitutes as well as the elite. Jesus was a scandal! He included everyone without limits or preconditions. Jesus loved everybody and made them feel wanted, cared for, and included. Shouldn't we do the same? Jesus did say to follow him.

It is fitting that on this final feast of the season of Christmas, we celebrate Jesus’ baptism, and with it our own entry into Christ’s life through the waters of baptism. During Christmas, we have reflected on the stunning recognition that God came to be one with us in Jesus Christ. Now, as we make the transition to Ordinary Time, we think about what it means to follow this same Christ, the Anointed One of God. In baptism, we too are anointed. Baptism plunges us into Christ’s death and resurrection; in baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit. Baptism, which is available to all who believe, draws us to the very heart of God. In baptism, we become the servants of the Lord, chosen ones who are called for the victory of justice, a light for the nations. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TTHHIISS IISS MMYY BBEELLOOVVEEDD SSOONN This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).
