A new year brings hope for growth and a more prosperous future for all. This year our Board of Directors identified four key categories for our strategic goals that will help this chapter to grow and be prosperous. They focus on the following: Knowledge, Community, Value and Infrastructure. You will see initiatives rolled into our Premiere Events and City Center Programs focusing on these categories. Knowledge: Enhance the programming of IIDA WI to be the interior design professional development resource in the state by providing growth opportunities for our members. Value: Assist members with the process of transition from one level of membership to the next through awareness, scholarship for continuing education and opportunity to earn a membership as well as to appropriately recognize our Annual Partners for their support. Community: Grow our membership base to enable each City Center to create a strong camaraderie and network base as well as to increase our online community through social media avenues. Infrastructure: Focus on providing convenient programming to underserved markets and adapting our Board structure to accommodate this change. Also, launch a new internet platform that will provide engaging and convenient access to our events and ease of registration with industry information readily available online. Our chapter of IIDA remains strong with great thanks due to the number of volunteers that put their heart, skill and time in making all of our events possible as well as our Annual Partners that provide the funds to execute our programs. I would like to extend a personal thank you to the volunteers and Annual Partners as well as the Board of Directors that dedicate countless hours to defining and implementing our chapter goals and initiatives. It is truly a pleasure working with such a fine organization of professionals. Best Wishes, Rebecca Brown, IIDA

Rebecca Brown, IIDA

The New Year is upon us and though our organization encounters a change in leadership and deep evaluation of our chapter goals in July, a new year always brings the opportunity to reflect upon those goals, think about our accomplishments and face our new initiatives with a fresh perspective.

2011 Year in Review - Premier Event42011 IIDA WI Fifth Annual

SWMF Great Bag Bash

RecapThe Great Bag Bash was a success! It was the 5th annual Bag Bash with 153 people in attendance. IIDA WI had their largest turn-out for the famed annual event. Just over $7,000 was raised for the Susan Wohlitz Memorial Fund. The Susan Wohlitz Memorial Fund, part of the IIDA Foundation, is a scholarship fund used for the advancement of students pursuing interior design degrees in the State of Wisconsin.

This year was the last year live auction participants had an opportunity to win a Knoll Womb Chair. This year the Womb Chair went to Erin Jende, InterfaceFlor, first time attendee of the Great Bag Bash. A good time and good fun was had by all. We decorated bags, played a little “SUSAN” bingo, and auctioned off both donations and the fabulous bag designed off our “bag bashers”.

We hope you’ve been able to join us over this year! Thank you to all our committee members, volunteers, attendees, and donors. IIDA WI is very proud of this event and we hope it continues to grow over the years to come. We also hope you keep coming. Thanks again!

2011 Year in Review - Premier Event2011 Interior Perspectives

RecapOn Thursday, May 5th, IIDA-WI held the 14th annual Interior Perspectives continuing education event in conjunction with the AIA- WI Convention and Building Product Expo at the Monona Terrace in Madison, WI. Interior Perspectives is a premier event offering CEU opportunities to Interior Design professionals.

This year brought a change in schedule consolidating the IIDA sponsored speakers to a one day event. The morning seminar "Revitalize Design Skills by Returning to Basics" presented by Cheryl Duvall, FIIDA, LEED AP brought designers back to their educational roots and provided a familiar framework from which to approach and present design solutions. This seminar was provided as our sponsorship to the AIA Convention and was open to AIA members to attend.

The afternoon seminars featured "Materials Chemistry" presented by Kay Illenden LEED AP of Steelcase. This seminar offered USGBC and CEU credits and delve into the chemistry composition of the products we use in design and evaluated the impact these products may have on human health and the environment. Another afternoon seminar was a workshop on "Introduction to SketchUP" by Matthew Kerr, IIDA, ASAI. This workshop was a one of a kind for Interior Perspectives and gave hands on computer training of the powerful tool of SketchUP, which is used to assist designers create fast and accurate renderings used for communication design solutions.

Registration this year gave a cost savings to those that took advantage of the new early bird registration. This year's attendance was consistently higher for each seminar than in past years. IIDA- WI held a drawing for an IIDA messenger bag for those that attended Interior Perspectives. Congratulations to Megan Schmitt of Ideal Builders for winning the messenger bag! Thank you to all that attended. You helped make this day a success.

2011 IIDA WI Celebrate In Design

RecapWhat a better way to end a hard day's work of learning and rekindling our design education and skills, but then to have a celebration! Immediately following Interior Perspectives on Thursday, May 5th, IIDA-WI hosted the interior design awards event, Celebrate In Design at the Best Western Inn on the Park, Madison, WI.

The room was beautifully decorated with fresh floral arrangements and brightly colored hand-made table runners donated by D.L. Couch. It was a great setting to welcome the 140+ guests there to see some outstanding design submissions, mingle with fellow design professionals, place a bid on some fantastic auction items and be inspired by the amazing members that make up the IIDA-WI chapter.

This year's Celebrate In Design once again featured Cheryl Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP and the Executive Vice President and CEO of IIDA as the Master of Ceremonies, a presentation from the 2010 Best of Competition winner Melissa Destree, IIDA on her design of Bonfyre Grille, the presentation of a new Legacy Sponsor award to

2011 Year in Review - Premier Event9STRUT 2011

RecapWhat an event! Over 250 people came out to see our first annual ASID, IIDA STRUT Fashion Show to support this year’s charity- Habitat for Humanity of Wisconsin -Janesville.

58 Interior Designers from all over the state of Wisconsin participated by creating one of a kind fashions made out of interior design materials to the 2011 Theme- Wisconsin Landscapes. Random pairing of Industry partners with the teams, along with a random color selection from the Benjamin Moore 2012 forecasted colors, made for a real design challenge.

Designers were to create an outfit using their industry partner’s materials, their color and to adhere to the theme. The models were also interior designers who had to strut their stuff down the runway for a great cause.

We definitely did not show our Wisconsin conservative side at this year’s show. Take a look at the great hair, makeup and fashions from the event in the pictures attached. What an incredible show it was.

A special thank you to VICI Beauty School for donated their time for our hair and makeup. Thanks to Neal Kreuser Photography for donating his professional services, to Jennifer Carley, Graphic Designer for donating her professional services, Sound and light by Sound by Design, and to the Intercontinental Hotel – Milwaukee for hosting our event at their fantastic location.

We would also like to thank Carson Cooper, from Mannington Commercial, for being our Emcee for the evening, and special thanks to the Judges: Carol J. Blanchard, Skylight Opera Costume Designer, Catherine Hempfling- Prossen from Bentley Prince Street, and Dr. Kathe Stumpf Julin, UW – Stevens Point Professor.

We cannot forget to thank the first Strut committee for their incredible hard work to create such a successful event- Shannon Cooper, ASID Co-Chair, Tracy Pugh, IIDA Co-Chair, Ann Donkle-Dillett, Bill Beaudreau, Bonnie Toland, Deb Davis, Jamie Carley, Jennifer Drake, Katie Flach, Michelle Haglund, Sara Olm, Stacy Wild-Nelson, and Stephanie Fitch.

This year’s event proceeds went to support the Shanty Town project at the Habitat for Humanity Janesville location. Please see their website to learn more about this great event. Check out our IIDA website under the STRUT tab for more pictures from this year’s event and watch for details for the 2012 STRUT event coming soon at www.iidawi.org.

2011 Year in Review - Madison City Center Events13Epic Tour Recap

IIDA Madison City Center had a tour of Epic's Galactic Headquarters on May 24. We had a great turn out and were broken into two groups to tour the facility. From the start you knew that this was no ordinary company, and recognize that the design professionals involved in Epic's projects were allowed more creative license than usually seen in a corporate environment. Although the tours lasted a couple of hours much more time would be needed to do the facility justice.

Some of the things that make Epic's buildings unique are fireplaces and clocks located in every conference room. The buildings all have themes that are carried out to an amazing level of detail. A unique feature of their design concept is that every employee has a private office. The campus is so large that there are visitor offices, so employees can stay in a building if they have several meetings scheduled during a day, rather than take the time to return to their own office building. There are elaborately decorated tunnels connecting the buildings, so weather will not affect your travel from one building to another. The majority of the parking is underground, to keep the campus' footprint smaller. The land owned by Epic, but not in use for their facilities, is farmed by a local farmer. There is even a full size tree house for conferences or just a break from the busy office environment. IIDA members even enjoyed the slide from one floor to another in one of the newer buildings with a Heaven and Hell theme.

The Epic staff also highlighted their commitment to green building as demonstrated by their solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling, and planned windmill. They are always in a construction phase, and always planning the next building. They mentioned that 40% of people in North America have their health records on Epic Systems software, and judging by their growth, that number will increase. Everyone who went on the tour will agree that Epic's facility is indescribable, so we encourage you to take advantage of the next event IIDA schedules at Epic. Thank you Epic for the wonderful tour!

2011 Year in Review - Madison City Center Events14

On December 6 the Madison City Center toured the House of the Future designed by Robin Pharo. The CEU tour was hosted by Robin, and representatives from American TV and Appliance who acted as consultants on the project. The house is located in Mount Horeb. The home is beautiful and features many unique design features and a natural setting taking advantage of the impressive stone wall outside. The house can be run from an I Pad at any location. All energy consumption can be controlled and directed, maximizing savings in costs and energy usage. Although the house is spacious, it is energy efficient and has many luxury features. The tour was well attended with 20+ taking advantage of this great opportunity.

Fox Valley City Center Event

Recap

2011 Year in Review - Fox Valley City Center Events16

Kroc Center TourIn November, The Fox Valley City Center toured the Kroc Center in Green Bay. John Manser, Director of Operations, shared with us the vision of the Kroc Foundation and what these projects mean to communities they are a part of on both the local and national level. We learned about the LEED aspects of the building and were impressed with the details in the design. Here are some of the comments that we received in our survey.

• ”A lot of thought went into the design and construction of this facility…”

• “It was interesting to hear how they

coordinated the funding for the building.” • “I learned a lot about the Salvation Army

and what it is all about...I have a new and better appreciation for the Salvation Army as a whole.”

• “It’s great that the center is for all levels of

people...creates community and that the neighbors donated the land...very cool!”

Wicked/PAC Tour RecapIn February 2011 IIDA-WI members were treated to a facility tour of the Fox Cities Performing Art Center. The design of the facility was done by Zeidler Roberts Partnership, Inc. (ZRP) of Toronto, Canada, who began their extraordinary design work in January of 2000.

ZRP conceived of a structure as impressive as it is functional. The Center offers the area not only a spectacular addition to the architecture of the area, but a truly superior venue for accommodating local arts groups and those from around the world. Artec, Inc., of New York, was selected to provide acoustical and theatrical consulting for the Center. The $45 million facility opened its doors on November 25, 2002, only 31 months after breaking ground. Not only was the facility built in a record amount of time, but it also was able to accomplish its goal of raising the $45 million through the private contributions of over 2,700 local residents and businesses. Boldt Construction Company worked closely with Zeidler Grinnell Partnership Architects and Artec Consultants to assure that this facility was world-class in both the amenities and the acoustics it has to offer its audiences. After the tour, many members were able to stay and see the PAC in action for a performance of WICKED.

Lighting the Community Mount Mary College

RecapOn March 5, 2011, Mount Mary College Student IIDA/ ASID Chapter visited the homes of several Milwaukee County residents to help make their homes more energy efficient by changing the way in which they light their homes. Mount Mary's mission for this event was to offer residents the chance to exchange incandescent bulbs for more efficient CFL's, free of cost. In addition to replacing the incandescent bulbs, the students educated residents on the financial and environmental benefits of using CFL's as well as how to properly dispose of them. Mount Mary’s goal to replace 250 incandescent bulbs with CFL’s will save the residents a combined total of over $8,000.00 in energy costs, the equivalent of 160,000 pounds of energy producing coal, and over 73,000 pounds of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
