Reflection April 1, 2018 — Easter Sunday/The

Resurrection of the Lord (the Mass of Easter Day)

ACTS 10: 34A, 37-43; PS 118: 1-2, 16-17, 22-23;

COL 3: 1-4, JN 20: 1-9

One of the recommended Responsorial Psalms

on this glorious Easter Sunday is Psalm 118,

including this from verse 24: “This is the day the

Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.” In

truth Easter is all about rejoicing. It is the day of

Resurrection which provides hope to all of us.

Throughout our diocese thousands of people are

at Mass today who may not normally attend.

Recent studies have shown that as many as 40

percent of those who do not regularly attend may

not have been at Mass since Christmas.

That is another reason for us to rejoice and say

“Welcome home.” We miss you and we love you.

Christ’s love for us is at the foundation of our

celebration today. St. Augustine once wrote, “God

loves each of us as if there were only one of us.”

We ask God’s blessings on all those who have

passed our amazing religion to you. Clearly you do

remember your devotion and are here to honor it.

Our Catholic Church considers today to be the

holiest day of the year. For us as Catholics this

celebrates one of the greatest days in history —

when Jesus, the Son of God, defeated death and

rose from the grave giving us all hope for eternal

life. St. Pope John Paul II may have put it best

several years ago when he proclaimed, “Do not

abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter

people and hallelujah is our song.”

***reflection from the Office of Stewardship and

Development

St. Thomas Aquinas serves as the Catholic Center at Purdue University. Our parish engages the youthful energy

of all its members to nurture their faith journey across all generations through liturgy, spiritual and intellectual formatio n,

stewardship, and justice with peace. We joyfully welcome all who wish to meet life's challenges through lived faith in Jesus Christ.

“Noli Me Tangere” Franciabigio, 1525

Page 2: Reflection...“Noli Me Tangere” Franciabigio, 1525 What has “STONE” got to do with the Resurrection? In the gospel of Mark, we are told, as Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother

What has “STONE” got to do with the

Resurrection? In the gospel of Mark, we are

told, as Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of

James, and Salome began to walk to Jesus’

tomb, they kept asking the question: "Who will

roll back the stone for us from the entrance to

the tomb?" Remember, this was a huge and

heavy stone. This stone was the only obstacle

blocking their entry into Jesus’ tomb to anoint

His body. They could have easily given up and

returned home. Yet, their love for Jesus

pressed them on towards the stone.

Their question, “Who will roll back the stone?” has been humanity’s

mournful cry right from the beginning when our first parents (Adam and

Eve) fell from grace. Because they had fractured their relationship with

God through disobedience, a huge rock was placed between their

offspring and God. In fact, who on earth amongst God’s creatures was

capable of removing this barrier blocking humanity’s path to eternal life

with God? Who even in the heavens, apart from God Himself, could give

back hope to fallen mankind?

“Who?” The answer was given to the three women (Mary Magdalene,

Mary, the mother of James, and Salome) searching for the corpse of their

Master beyond the grave. It was at the tomb we found the answer! When

the women arrived, they found the stone rolled away and was empty.

Fear must have taken hold of their hearts, prompting them to ask who

had been there- the Roman soldiers, the high priests' guards, or thieves?

Who rolled away the stone? As quickly as the fear seized them, it was

replaced by anxiety, sadness and probably anger. What has happened to

the sacred body of Jesus? They must have been helpless and confused.

Just then, their sorrow quickly turns into joy. An angel of the Lord was

waiting for them with this good news, “You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the

crucified. He has been raised; he is not here.” Jesus had risen! Here is

the answer to the world’s inquiry—there is another life! Jesus is the

Resurrection and the Life: “Behold the place where they laid him.” He is

no longer dead. As the God-Man, only Him alone through His own death

was capable of entering into the realm of death and conquering it with

His divine power. Now, humanity is free from the tyranny of Satan. By

rising from the dead, Jesus is making all things new for those who love

Him. He is restoring us from death to life, from sickness to health, from

poverty to riches, from despair to hope, from sadness to joy, from

restlessness to peace, and most importantly from sin to righteousness.

This is the day of liberation. This is the new day when the new Adam rose

and saved the old Adam. In short, Easter Sunday is day the Son of God

rolled away the stone of death, setting captives free and granting pardon

to sinners. Resurrection day is our own victory won for us by the God-

Man, Jesus Christ.

Do you find yourself crying out, “Who will remove the stones?” Many of

us have stones way too large and heavy for us to roll away by ourselves.

These stones weigh us down, blocking the entrance of our hearts so that

Jesus’ life cannot enter. They keep us from living our lives fully for Him.

Easter Sunday is a reminder that Jesus wants to roll away the stones

from our hearts. The heart is His work. He does not need our help. He did

not need the disciples’ help; the stone was rolled away before the

disciples even arrived. Therefore, let us run towards Jesus like Peter and

John did after receiving the good news from the three faithful women. Let

Him empty the tomb of our heart of sin and death and resurrect it with

His own Life.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Baptisms

Are normally scheduled during or after the 5:30PM Mass on

Saturday, or during or after the 11:00AM Mass on Sunday.

The next baptism preparation sessions will be:

All Classes are 6:00-7:30PM

Please contact Eileen Strater in the Parish Office at 765-743-

4652 or [email protected] to register for the baptism

class and/or place your child’s baptism on the parish calendar.

Through the Sacrament of Baptism, God’s children are

welcomed into the Catholic faith family, which most commonly

takes place at a very young age. In this case, it is extremely

important for parents to know what they are asking when they

ask to have their children baptized. St. Tom’s baptismal

preparation program is for first time parents and

godparents. Sessions are offered every other month. Please

see the parish calendar or call the parish office for upcoming

dates and times.

Marriage

Just got engaged? Want to have your wedding here at St.

Thomas Aquinas? Please contact Matthew Andrzejewski in the

parish office at 765-743-4652 or [email protected]

to start the marriage process and to reserve your date on the

parish calendar. Our wedding ceremony guidelines can be

found on our website under the Faith Life tab.

Welcome New Parishioners!

We welcome all who wish to join our parish family. You may

register by visiting the parish office or by clicking on the link on

our homepage at www.boilercatholics.org. We’re glad you are

here!

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Are you or someone you know interested in becoming

Catholic? The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

process is designed for those who wish to become full

members of the Roman Catholic Church. These sessions are

also a great way to learn more about the Church. The

individuals in the process are involved in a journey of faith and

conversion which includes learning about the beliefs, life,

liturgy and apostolic work of the Catholic community. The RCIA

process at St. Tom’s has two distinctly different tracks, and is

geared around the Purdue calendar, with weekly sessions

beginning in September. Participants can expect to receive

Sacraments of Initiation during the Easter Vigil Mass. To

determine which track of the RCIA process will best suit your

needs, or for more information, contact Eileen Strater in the

parish office at 765-743-4652 or [email protected].

may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you

close wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spir-
