Dear Parishioners:
Jesus teaches us in today's Holy Gospel the truth that we live forever, "those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age... no longer die, for they are like angels." Overcoming our natural fear of death is an act of faith in eternal life. Every autumn, we see nature surrender to the Will of God. That's why we as faithful Catholics dedicate November to remembering those who have died. In Christ Jesus, they are alive!
Heaven is perfect, but we are not. We are saints in the making. Thankfully, purgatory is an extension of God's mercy. Let us pray for the souls in purga-tory: O Lord, who art ever merciful and bounteous with Thy gifts, look down upon the suffering souls in purgatory. Remember not their offenses, but be mindful of Thy loving mercy, which is from all eternity. Cleanse them of their sins and fulfill their ardent desires that they may be made worthy to behold Thee face to face in Thy glory. May they soon be united with Thee and hear those blessed words which will call them to their heavenly home: "Come, blessed of My Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."
Blessings upon you, Fr. Gabriel

During November, from the Feast of All Saints through the Feast of Christ the King, we are especially mindful of those who have died during the past year. +At the 5:00 PM Mass on Saturday, November 5 we celebrated with a spe-cial memorial for our parishioners who have died during the past year. Din-ner followed for their families and those who serve in funeral ministries. These parishioners will also be remembered during the Sunday Masses to-day, November 6, when families, friends, and fellow parishioners of the de-ceased process with the candles at the beginning of the Liturgy. +The Book of Remembrance will be available near the baptismal font for all parishioners to inscribe the names of loved ones who have died since last November. + Candles representing our deceased parishioners of the past year and the
Book of Remembrance will remain in church through Sunday, November 20.

GRACE 2.0 These last weeks of the Church year remind us of our ultimate calling as followers of Jesus: we have faith in the Resurrection! As we travel toward home, our Paschal mystery living means we live this life in a way that infuses it with the Life that is to come. Everything has a purpose, leading us to forever. Our Grace 2.0 year has been a blessing, a challenge, a risk, and a grace. It has invited us into greater participation and under-standing of our responsibility for building and enlivening this faith community. As Paul reminds us: “God (through others) has given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through grace6”

I'm so young...how can I help? For children who are looking to get involved in the Mass, our Children's Liturgy of the Word at St. Joseph the Worker has several opportunities! During Children's Liturgy of the Word, on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sundays of the month, we need youth volunteers to read the Scripture, carry the banner, and even assist with presenting the reflection for the day. If your child is interested in volunteering to read or carry the banner, you can sign them up for the specific date and Mass time that works for your schedule. Contact Julie Hill to receive those sign-up opportunities via email. (588-1433; [email protected])

What’s this STO all about? It’s about supporting Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Dubuque and making the most out of your charitable contribution. If you file an Iowa Income Tax Return, your contributions to the Our Faith School Tuition Organization (STO) qualify for a 65% tax credit. That means for every $100 you donate, you receive an Iowa income tax credit $65, which reduces your Iowa tax liability by $65. Thus, a $1000 contribution reduces your Iowa tax liability by a whopping $650 AND the entire amount of your gift qualifies for federal deductibility. • Many people have been asking if our sister parish, St. Therese
of the Child Jesus, was hit by Hurricane Matthew. The answer is NO. They were not touched by it at all. However, their normal poverty is still in full effect.
• If you are interested in visiting our Sister Parish in Haiti, come to an informational meeting on Sunday, November 13 at 9:30 am in Martin Hall. We are making plans for a possible visit in February or March of 2017.
• We will again be giving away Thanksgiving baskets to
those in the Dubuque community who request a Thanksgiving meal for their fami-ly. The KC’s at St. Columbkille have generously offered to provide 100 turkeys and bags of potatoes to accompany the baskets. So we are asking for parish fam-ilies between St. Joseph the Worker and St. Columbkille to provide the other items in the gift boxes. They include the following: stuffing, turkey gravy, yams, cranberry sauce, cream of mushroom soup, canned green beans corn or other vegetable, jello, canned fruit, and a $10 Hy-Vee gift card (for the recipient’s pur-chase of a pie and/or dinner rolls). If you would like to provide the entire dinner menu listed above for a family or any items listed above, please put it in a sturdy box and return it to either church by Monday, November 14. Thanks for your an-ticipated generosity.

This is a cultural tradition that we take for granted, per-haps until we have experienced the holiday in a developing country. Dia de Muertos is celebrated by our Hispanic friends and has a different feel to it. I am always re-minded that 150 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 are involved in child labor around the world (Fair Trade Fact). Their celebration is more subdued than in our country. Your support of Fair Trade items directly improves many of their lives.
Former parishioners and others who are interested are invited to an Open House on Sunday, November 13 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm, at the former St. Mary’s Church, now known as the Steeple Square Event Center. There will a short program at 3:00 pm to provide an update on the changes that have
taken place on the former St. Mary’s Campus and the Vision that is being devel-oped. Refreshments will be provided. St. Mary’s had a profound impact on the Ger-man Catholic immigrants that settled in this area in the 1840’s and beyond and on their descendants. The New Vision will continue to impact the Washington Neigh-borhood and the wider community. Parking will be available in the lots on the west side of White Street between 14th and 15th Streets.
