3 rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A) 26 th January, 2020 Reflection: Im a New Zealander living in New Zealand writing an Australia Day reflection. Our two nations are united by generations of friendship through good times and bad. In times of war our families and friends lived and died alongside each other. On the sports field we can bring out the best in each other. Our geographical proximity makes it easy to visit for a long weekend or a relaxing vacation. Together we are growing to appreciate the diversity of the people who make up our nations, immigrants of the last two centuries alongside the first people of our lands who have lived here for many centuries. While Australia Day celebrates this diversity and potential, as Christians we know that left to ourselves our cultural shadows and fears will overwhelm us. Jesus Christ, the source of all human existence and culture, has shone a new light on our lands enabling us to live as citizens not only of an earthy land but of an eternal realm. There are two distinct parts to the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Each is as important as the other, and therefore, each has a ‘table’ from which to take place. The Liturgy of the Word is a dialogue with God in which we listen and respond to God’s Word through the scriptures at the place known as the Ambo (meaning elevated place). It is here that we are nourished by God’s Word with wisdom. Shifting then to the ‘table’ of our sacrifice, the Liturgy of the Eucharist nourishes us with holiness. Reflection: I’m a New Zealander living in New Zealand writing an Australia Day

reflection. Our two nations are united by generations of friendship through good times

and bad. In times of war our families and friends lived and died alongside each other.

On the sports field we can bring out the best in each other. Our geographical

proximity makes it easy to visit for a long weekend or a relaxing vacation. Together we

are growing to appreciate the diversity of the people who make up our nations,

immigrants of the last two centuries alongside the first people of our lands who have

lived here for many centuries. While Australia Day celebrates this diversity and

potential, as Christians we know that left to ourselves our cultural shadows and fears

will overwhelm us. Jesus Christ, the source of all human existence and culture, has

shone a new light on our lands enabling us to live as citizens not only of an earthy land

Prayer for those affected by Bushfire and

Drought

Eternal God,

In wisdom and love you created our earth to sustain us

and give us life.

We turn to you now in faith, hope and love, asking

you to look with favour on our fire-ravaged and

drought-stricken land, on our starving and displaced

animals, on our failing crops and burning farms, towns

and forests.

Strengthen, sustain and give new heart to our farmers

and to all who are affected by drought; be with those

who support them. Strengthen and comfort the victims

of the fires, those who have lost family, friends,

property and stock. Protect our volunteer firefighters

and all members of essential services.

In your loving providence, send abundant rain to

quench the fires and to restore our parched earth.

Father of all compassion, hear our prayer through

Jesus Christ your Son, in whom the promise of new

life has dawned, and through the power of the Holy

Spirit, the Lord the giver of life: Renew your faithful

people; Renew the face of the earth.

Prayers of the Faithful Presider: Sisters and brothers, in a spirit of

reconciliation and thanksgiving we observe Australia Day, and with the Universal Church we celebrate this first Sunday of the Word of God instituted by Pope Francis.

That the people of Australia will experience solidarity as we pray for and support all those whose lives have been changed because of the bushfires and drought, and more recently by floods and fierce storms. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer That in our land a continuous spirit of reconciliation and respect will shape the relationship between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians, so that their culture, spirituality, history and struggles of each are valued by all. Lord, hear us.

Lord, hear our prayer. That as a nation we will draw the message of peace and justice, mercy and compassion from the Word of God, and show a particular care for indigenous Australians, asylum seekers, refugees, and all who struggle with poverty, discrimination and homelessness. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer. That the observance of this first Sunday of the Word of God will enrich the Church in Australia, as we prepare for the start of the Plenary Council this year, and as we await the appointment of new bishops for Adelaide and Port Pirie. Lord, hear us. Lord, hear our prayer.

Priest….. God our Creator, who shaped our

continent as the Great Southern Land of the Holy

Spirit, pour that Holy Spirit into the hearts of all, so

that we will live fully in the mystery of the Word of

God, your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns forever and ever.

Amen

. We ask this Christ our Lord..
