Reflecting on our faith … In this week’s Gospel, Jesus asks the disciples who they think he is. The disciples come up with various responses which all point out that he is certainly someone very important. They mention significant prophets from the Old Testament and also John the Baptist. However, Peter, on behalf of the group, proclaims him as the Messiah and it is because of this, Peter’s faith, that he is declared the leader of the founding Church. There is a time in our lives when we have to declare our faith; when we have to risk everything because we are truly convinced that we too, like Peter, truly believe. This week, can we take some time to consider how proud we truly are of our faith? Will we proudly wear the badge of being a Christian and help to promote a better understanding of what we believe in our social networks, our workplaces, our schools and in our communities? Peter risked his all. But he gained enormously for that risk by being the rock upon which the church of Jesus is built. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Changes to the finishing date for Term 3 and the starting date of Term 4 Today your child will bring home a letter that I am sending to all families in our community regarding important changes to the finishing date for this term and the starting date for next term for students. These changes are necessary to allow the next phase of the ICT project the College is embarking upon, to take place over the Term 3 holidays. During the extended term holidays the entire Administration Building, which includes the General Office, Year level Coordinator offices, teacher work stations and staffroom must be vacated to allow the necessary cabling works to take place. As a consequence the College will close for the term holidays on Thursday, 18 September and students will not return in Term 4 until Tuesday, 7 October to allow staff to pack and then unpack all their teaching resources. Please note the College will provide private study supervision in the Learning Centre on both Friday, 19 September and Monday, 6 October where parents are unable to make the necessary alternative arrangements. I have attached a copy of the letter to this newsletter, for ease of reference. Please note that it contains a reply slip which must be returned to the College via the Homebase Teacher no later than Friday, 29 August. I apologise for any inconvenience that the changed arrangements may cause some families and once again ask for your patience and understanding. Reflecting on our faith …

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus asks the disciples who they think he is. The disciples come up with various

responses which all point out that he is certainly someone very important. They mention significant

prophets from the Old Testament and also John the Baptist. However, Peter, on behalf of the group,

proclaims him as the Messiah and it is because of this, Peter’s faith, that he is declared the leader of the

founding Church.

There is a time in our lives when we have to declare our faith; when we have to risk everything because we

are truly convinced that we too, like Peter, truly believe. This week, can we take some time to consider

how proud we truly are of our faith? Will we proudly wear the badge of being a Christian and help to

promote a better understanding of what we believe in our social networks, our workplaces, our schools and

in our communities?

Peter risked his all. But he gained enormously for that risk by being the rock upon which the church of

Jesus is built.

Re-Enrolment 2015 Planning for next year has commenced which extends to student re-enrolment for 2015. We need to know student numbers by early in Term 4 for the following reasons:

The College has commenced budget preparations for 2015

We have a number of families whose children are on a waiting list for 2015

The Catholic Education Office asks for enrolment numbers in Term 4 each year (for the following year) and factors those numbers into our funding worksheet, so student numbers is therefore vital.

Families will receive re-enrolment forms for 2015 in early September. In preparation for re-enrolment I ask that families ensure that their commitment to Parish Thanksgiving is up to date. The additional support we receive from parish communities helps keep our fee increases to a minimum.

Chess Tournament – 15 August Congratulations the students who represented the College at the SACCSS Chess Tournament last Friday. Their Coach Irena Grbesic reports that although they did not make the finals or take out any of the major prizes, they all competed well and enjoyed the experience. Year 8 Boys AFL – 20 August Well done to the Year 8 Boys AFL Team on a great showing in the Round Robin Tournament in which they played at Werribee on Wednesday, 20 August – they came third.

Please pray for … The Brne Family – Emily’s (7O’R), great grandmother, Lorna Carey, passed away on 13 August.

Mr Greg Wade, Principal

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL, STUDENT WELLBEING

Nitor Information Evening held on 14 August Last Thursday evening, 14 August, the Learning Centre was buzzing with excited parents and about 34 boys from Year 9. Mr Brian Horan and Mr David Magris outlined the background to the Nitor program and the potential for the students wanting to be involved next year. We were fortunate to have Sean McManus (parent of Ben) and Bea Wood (parent of Alexander) who provided a reflection of their boys’ journey in the Nitor Class and their experience as a Nitor parent. They spoke highly of the Nitor program and the positive impact it has had on their sons. We also had Adrian Mauro, Ben McManus, Joseph Caglioti and Alexander Wood, who are current Nitorians talk about the growth they have experienced personally and academically, their field trips and their learning about becoming good men.

During the evening the application process for 2015 was also outlined for the prospective students. Mr Horan and Mr Magris will be conducting interviews with students and their parents on Tuesday, 9 September.

Hillside Bus concerns Whilst the majority of our bus travellers are respectful and compliant on their journey to and from school, unfortunately there are some that are letting themselves and the school down due to their behavior and lack of common courtesy. Yesterday we had a bus driver lodge a formal complaint about the distracting level of noise from students at the back of the bus and the amount of rubbish that is being left behind. It was disappointing to hear this as I had spoken to students about this very issue late last term. By the time you receive this newsletter I will have again met with the students and reiterated our expectations and provided them with a letter outlining the expectations and the consequences for students who choose not to comply with them. I ask you to read and sign the reply slip on the bottom of the letter and ask for your support in addressing our concerns. Please feel free to contact me at the College if you or your child has concerns about the behaviour of other students that travel on the bus.

Homebase Groups for 2015 In the weeks ahead the College will be commencing its planning process for the construction of Homebase groups for 2015. The Year Level Coordinators and Homebase Teachers play a significant role in organising these lists and many factors come into consideration when making decisions about the class a student will be placed in next year. All requests for 2015 will need to be put in writing to your son or daughter’s current Year Level Coordinator (see list below) by 12 September and must contain substantial reasons for your request. Year 7: Mr Justin Botha [email protected] Year 8: Ms Pat Monteleone [email protected] Year 9: Miss Kiera McNally [email protected] Year 10: Mrs Pam Pearce [email protected] Please note that whilst all requests will be considered, it is not always possible to accommodate them.

Father’s Day Breakfast – 8 September A reminder about the invitation to fathers/significant male figures in students’ lives to breakfast on Monday, 8 September from 7.30 – 8.30am. Mr Brendan Podbury from St Vincent’s will be speaking about his fatherhood role and his family, the importance of building positive relationships with your teenager and his work with St Vinnies. Raffle tickets at 50 cents per ticket will also be available that morning with funds raised to be put towards homelessness projects.

Year 9 Reflection Days Yesterday the Year 9 students attended their Reflection Day, with the last of the three days scheduled for 18 September. These days are facilitated by the NET (National Evangelisation Team) and will have a Social Justice theme focusing on how each individual can make a difference. This ties in with the theme of the work that the Year 9 students are pursuing as part of the Audeamus Program this term. The days are taking place at Brimbank Anglican Church Centre and students will be required to bring their own lunch and morning tea on the day as there are no canteen facilities available. Students should wear PE uniform on the day.

Homebase Masses On 28 August 10G and 10L will have their Homebase Mass. Msgr Franco Cavarra will be the celebrant at both of these Masses. The final Homebase Mass for Term 3 will be 10N on 11 September.

Infrastructure Upgrade Progress The major infrastructure project being undertaken by the College is over 50% complete. The new wireless access points are working in almost all areas with cabling being completed most student areas as well. This will mean students will have a much stronger wireless connection in all classrooms and many open areas. There is still a lot of backend work to be completed with our servers before staff and students start to see any real performance gains but so far everything is proceeding according to schedule.

Year 8 and 9 Windows 8.1 Upgrade The upgrade to Windows 8.1 has gone relatively smoothly over the last few weeks. The update has allowed for many security and usability upgrades. If any student has not had their machine updated they must bring their signed form (copies available from ICT Helpdesk) and laptop to the ICT Helpdesk before next Friday, 29 August. Any students who have not had their machine updated by this date will have their computer account disabled as they now pose a security risk to the rest of the College.

Year 9 Batteries and Case Repairs As the Year 9 laptops are nearing the three year mark we have arranged for some repairs to be made by ACER (manufacturer) to the casings of these machines. We have asked each student to indicate if their machine is exhibiting certain issues and ACER, through Trident (our supplier), will be coming before term end to repair these issues.

Page 7: Reflecting on our faith - crcnk.com.au · Reflecting on our faith ... Yesterday we had a bus driver lodge a formal complaint about the distracting level of noise ... there are no

CRCNK Newsletter No. 13: 22August 2014 7

We also have batteries at the discounted price of $65 (normally $100) still available for these machines. It is strongly advised that students purchase a new battery as we are seeing runtimes for some students dropping quickly as batteries start deteriorating. Please remember that students are not permitted to use power adapters in classes as these pose both a health and safety risk and a risk to our electrical circuits.

Large Files on Laptops We are starting to see large files, including illegal movies, television and game files coming back onto our network. Regardless of the legality of files, please remember that large, non-school related files should always be stored on the D:\ drive. A common source of legal but inappropriate files are videos taken from cameras such as GoPro or videos of game play. These files often are in high definition and use a large amount of space. Unfortunately if students continue to store these files in the wrong locations we will have to consider introducing disk space limits to protect the overall availability of storage to all students.

Reporting Laptop and iPad Damage We are seeing a worrying trend of students not reporting damage to their laptop or iPad. It is important that any damage is reported immediately. In many cases early reporting may allow us to have damage repaired under warranty. Damage that is left unchecked will eventually become more serious and potentially more costly. In some cases, especially with broken iPad screens, there is a real safety issue as students are walking around and using broken glass. If students or parents have any concerns or questions about these issues or any other College-related ICT please feel free to contact ICT Services on 9361 5911.

CAMs comes to CRC On Friday afternoon (15 August) we were lucky enough to have Ewan Cole from Confederation of Australian Motor Sports (CAMS) come to the College and speak to the Year 9 “Engineering Your World” elective group. Ewan is a Scrutineer who is responsible for checking that all F1 cars stick to the rules when it comes to designing and running their cars. Some of the students involved in the F1 in Schools program also took part in this class. Ewan spoke to the group on how design of F1 cars has changed over the years in particular about how the wing design assisted the car in staying on the track. The students doing this elective will be studying how design has impacted on the way we have changed the world we live in.

After his presentation the students had a go at designing their own F1 car. The students were also lucky enough to get a CAMS promotional showbag. We hope that this presentation has given our students some insight into the complex rules that govern the F1 cars that race at the grand prix.
